Made my heart pound By Jennifer Bardsley I finished Nameless by Jennifer Jenkins at around 10 p.m. and then spent the next hour paralyzed on the couch trying to calm down. The first half of the book was really good, but the second half was so phenomenal that I actually had a physiological response. My heart pounded, I became sweaty, and I had to remind myself to breathe. Nameless has Suspense with a capital “S.”The story revolves around two main characters. Ko is from the Wolf clan and infiltrates the Ram clan with the purpose of spying on them and saving her people from possible genocide. To do this she must become a Nameless slave, slather on mud to make herself ugly, and hopefully keep herself safe from rape. Ko’s mission becomes ten times more complicated when her little sister Tess shows up as a tag-along.Gryphon is a Ram soldier whose biggest weakness is his empathetic nature. To be a Ram, Gryphon must be a cold-blooded killer. But no way can he kill innocent children or cause harm to his young apprentice, Joshua. When Joshua becomes friends with Ko and vice versa, Gryphon and Ko must question everything they have been trained to hate.Nameless is not only suspenseful, it’s unique. It has a fresh concept mixed with just enough history (remember Sparta, anyone) to make it seem believable, even though it’s Fantasy. But I do think this book should come with a warning label: Don’t read too close to bedtime or you’ll freak out!
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely Amazing! By Becca Rose ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!There is so much to love about this book! It’s heart wrenching, heart racing, page turning, and just so epically awesome. It’s a hard book to put down. Zo is an incredible protagonist that decides from the beginning of the book to risk her life in order to save the clans outside of the wall. Little does she realize her sister follows her to Ram’s Gate and is taken inside the wall along with her. Both her and her sister are immediately enslaved into the services of the Rams and are forevermore called Nameless, a slave with no name. The Rams find out that Zo is a healer and puts her skill to work, telling her that if one soldier should die then her sister will die. The problem with this is that Zo’s abilities to heal come with a price, she can only heal someone she cares about. And how do you care for someone you hate?The story also follows Gryphon, a Ram soldier with a conscience. Gryphon fights for the cause, sure, but he also is honorable and doesn’t kill unnecessary. Gryphon’s friend Joshua is the first wounded soldier Zo has to heal. Joshua befriends Zo, and Zo has a hard time pushing him away even though she tries. Zo is never a nameless to Joshua. Gryphon at first forces himself to see Zo as a nameless, but as time goes on he begins to see much, much more.I really enjoyed Joshua. He’s such a sweet boy, and despite him being a Ram, anyone would have their heart warmed from that kid. The other character I found myself surprised to like was Gabe. At first I was thinking there would be some sort of love triangle going on, but honestly it wasn’t like that at all (I’m not a fan of love triangles). So at first when I thought this was going to be just another one of those love triangles, I didn’t really like him. But over time as I got to know Gabe, and realized he was part of Zo’s past, a past she never thought she would see again, it all came together really well. And despite how he might feel for her, and how she might not feel for him, Gabe says and does some pretty note worthy things that definitely wins him a few points. He’s incredibly observant. And he risks his life for her by staying close to the wall and waiting for her. And despite how horrible that situation ends up for him, he’s still just a great person that is definitely willing to do anything for her. There’s even a part in the book, which I won’t give away, that had to do with him and Gryphon fighting and oh my goodness, I thought my heart would pop out of my chest. The author really knows how to put these characters in impossible situations where you really think something absolutely horrible is going to happen to everyone involved, and then you have to keep reading because you need to find out what happened to them. Because the characters are just that lovable despite them being enemies. Honestly the true enemies in this story are the Gate Master and the Chief. They are truly villainous. They are the kind of villains that make your skin crawl.Both of the main characters have their own inner journey as they realize more and more about the Rams, the Nameless, and the other clans. Zo’s inner journey deals with her hatred for what the Rams have done to her family and learning that not all Rams are evil, some just haven’t been taught any better. Some just have never befriended a Nameless. Gryphon’s inner journey is in discovery that there’s more than a brutal world and in realizing there’s a line one simply cannot cross when it comes to the innocent. Though both points of view are exceptional, I really enjoyed Gryphon’s journey. Of the two, I feel like he had the biggest growth to make. He is her enemy and she is his. He grew up in a brutal world. Participated and accepted the violence around him, telling himself that it was just the way of the world despite how he truly felt. But getting to know Zo completely changes him and he becomes such a strong, trustworthy character that tries to do the right thing despite the horrible situations he ends up in. His story really takes off and it’s hard to not be invested in his story. Zo is a lovable character too, and you really sympathize with her. Her parents were brutally killed by the Rams. She has every reason to despise them. And yet, as the story progresses, Joshua finds a way into her heart.Jennifer Jenkins has created such an astounding world. The characters are wonderful. It’s a gripping read from beginning to end with an incredible, intense ending that leaves the story open for more. I read the entire book in one day, that’s how incredible it is. It’s simply a must read! I cannot wait for the sequel!

If you are a YA fantasy lover you need to pick this one up!Opening Sentence: Zo couldn’t remember a time when she didn’t fear the Ram.The Review:The Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf, and the Ram are four clans that have been at war with each other for hundreds of years! The Ram have proven themselves to be the dominating race by teaching their clan members to be brutal warriors. The other three clans have decided to finally join together to try to take down the Rams!Zo is a member of the Wolf clan and she has volunteered to infiltrate the Ram city by becoming a slave. She knows that her chances of survival are slim to none, but she had to do something to revenge her parents who were murdered during a Ram raid. She has come to terms with the fact that she will most likely not ever leave the Ram city alive, but circumstances change when her eight year old sister follows her into the city. Zo has to change her plans and help comes from those she least expect. Zo never suspected she would meet a Ram that would have an actual soul. One that is honorable and helps her even though she is the enemy! Maybe there is hope for this suicidal mission after all.Gryphon is one of the best soldiers in the Ram army. He has had to work extremely hard to prove himself after the disgrace of his father. Growing up in the Ram clan is brutal but it has made them a superior race or at least that is what they are taught to believe. But the more Tristan immerses into the ways if the Ram the more he is torn between staying loyal to his people and following his own heart! Things really start to change when he meets Zo, a nameless healer that is more then she seems. Will Gryphon have the courage to do the right thing even if it deems him a traitor?Zo is an amazing heroine that I instantly loved. She is smart, brave, loyal, caring, and witty. Volunteering for her mission is extremely dangerous, but the information she will be collecting is priceless to her people. She gladly risks her life to help others and that made me really respect her. She isn't afraid to take chances and do whatever it takes to fulfill her mission. She makes mistakes along her journey, but she owns them and tries to make amends if she can. I found her very easy to connect with and I can't wait to read more of her story.I am madly in love with Gryphon. He is loyal, kind, intelligent, and gorgeous!!! He is an amazing solider and he cares deeply for his clan. His loyalty runs very deep, but he doesn't hesitate to do the right thing, even if it means he is betraying his people. He's not one of those people that makes rash decisions, he thinks things through and does what he thinks is best no matter what the consequences are. His relationship with Zo is sweet and slow burning. Even though they are enemies they learn to trust each other and they bring out the best in each other! Gryphon has quickly climbed the charts as one of my favorite book boys!Nameless destroyed me in the best way possible. Do you ever get that nervous feeling where it seems like butterflies are fluttering around inside of your stomach? I felt like that the entire time I was reading this book!! I almost had an anxiety attack because I was so attached to the characters and I was worried some of my favorites were going to meet their untimely demise! I loved that the book was told from a dual POV. Both Gryphon and Zo had a unique story to tell and it added great depth to the story. The romance was subtle, but written beautifully. The plot was very intriguing and the pacing was spot on. I loved the entire cast of characters, every single one of them added to the story. Then there is the killer ending that left me dying to see what happens next. If you can’t tell from all my flailing, I LOVED this book and it has definitely been one of the best books I have read this year! Trust me when I say you should pre-order it, add it to your TBR, request it from your library, do whatever you have to do to get this book in your hands because if you are a YA fantasy fan like me you need this book in your life!Notable Scene:Gryphon kept his eye trained on the prisoner as he took the length of rope. The pain from his shoulder streaked through his whole body, pulsing and terrible, but he didn’t show his enemy weakness.Blood dripped from the Wolf’s nose onto his lips and chin. He didn’t seem to be any older than Gryphon. One eye was swollen shut. A deep gash ran from cheek to chin. He stood tall, looking Gryphon in the eyes.Gryphon couldn’t help but be impressed.It was a shame the Wolf had to die.FTC Advisory: Month9Books provided me with a copy of Nameless.
