My name is Amber Alessandra Leola Kimiko Miyamoto. I have no idea why my parents gave me all those hideous names but they must have wanted to ruin my life, and you know what? They did an amazing job.

As a half-Japanese, half-Italian girl with a ridiculous name, Amber's not feeling molto bene (very good) about making friends at her new school.

But the hardest thing about being Amber is that a part of her is missing. Her dad. He left when she was little and he isn't coming back. Not for her first day of middle school and not for her little sister's birthday. So Amber will have to dream up a way for the Miyamoto sisters to make it on their own...

"[A] beautifully written story."-The Independent"One of those books that you simply won't want to put down...five out of five stars!"-The Guardian

Dream on, Amber, by Emma Shevah

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Eleven-year-old Ambra Alessandra Leola Kimiko Miyamoto (please, just call her Amber) navigates middle school embarrassments, awkward friendships, a first crush, an intimidating bully, and the realities of being a biracial tween in this smart and funny middle grade debut, first published in the UK. Half Italian and half Japanese, Amber has always felt a bit different than her peers in South London. Her loving and free-spirited mum; maternal grandmother, Nonna; and boisterous little sister, Bella, keep Amber on her toes. But she longs to know more about her Japanese ancestry. Unfortunately, Amber's father left the family when she was six, and it's a loss that feels like a "black hole" in her very center. Determined to protect her younger sister from the pain she feels, she begins forging letters from her father to Bella. Things quickly spiral, and what seemed like a white lie intended to help may wind up causing more harm than good. Amber comforts herself and works through her insecurities through her artwork and by creating an imaginary "Dream Dad" with whom she shares her deepest fears. Amber's authentic voice (including snort-worthy hyperbole and preteen melodrama balanced with tender moments of self-reflection) will resonate with kids. Shevah breathes life into this middle schooler, her lively family members, and her classmates and teachers. Amber confronts racial insensitivities (for example, students comment on her "exotic" appearance and ask her to "say something in Japanese") with frankness and realistic annoyance. The conversational first-person narration is enhanced by black-and-white doodles throughout. VERDICT By turns playful and poignant, in both style and substance, this coming-of-age novel will hook readers from the first page to the last.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

Review ""[This] novel is a charmer...While its humor and illustrations lend it Wimpy Kid appeal, its emotional depth makes it stand out from the pack. Molto bene!"" - Booklist, starred review"Shevah tenderly captures the void of growing up without a father yet manages to create a feisty, funny heroine. Crawford-White's whimsical pen-and-ink illustrations line the margins, as if Amber herself has added the doodles. Chapters are numbered in English, Italian, and Japanese, reflecting Amber's multicultural identity, but refreshingly, that identity does not drive the plot. A gutsy girl in a laugh-out-loud book that navigates tough issues with finesse." - Kirkus, starred review"Amber's effervescent and opinionated narration captivates from the start, making it easy to root for her as she strives to conquer the "beast" of her worries and thrive at home and at school." - Publishers Weekly, starred review"Amber's authentic voice (including snort-worthy hyperbole and preteen melodrama balanced with tender moments of self-reflection) will resonate with kids, Shevah breathes life into this middle schooler, her lively family members, and her classmates and teachers. Amber confronts racial insensitivities (for example, students comment on her "exotic" appearance and ask her to "say something in Japanese") with frankness and realistic annoyance. The conversational, first-person narration is enhanced by black-and-white doodles throughout... By turns playful and poignant, in both style and substance, this coming-of-age novel will hook readers from the first page to the last." - School Library Journal, starred review"Funny, poignant...In pages that Helen Crawford-White has ornamented with preteen-style drawings (our heroine is a talented artist), Amber recounts her cockamamie scheme to hearten Bella, how it all goes awry, and how it yet deepens her small family's bonds of love in this wise and accessible read for 9- to 12-year-olds" - The Wall Street Journal"Emma Shevah's "Dream On, Amber" is narrated in a spunky, endearing voice by Amber Miyamoto...Though "Dream On, Amber" is ripe with opportunities for didacticism, Amber's appealingly oddball voice makes the lessons go down easy. "Dream On, Amber" also does something unusual for a children's book that grapples with race: It does not solve Amber's biracial identity crisis. Though Amber struggles with the questions of her missing father and Japanese identity, the biggest lesson of this book is that sometimes there are no answers." - The New York Times"An entertaining, largely unsentimental look at a girl who, as best she can, makes peace with both the family members she has around and the ones who sadly aren't...Amber Miyamoto and her younger sister navigate his absence with a little hope and a lot of panache." - Shelf Awareness"Amber makes an approachable and admirable guide through questions of identity encountered by many tween readers...the final product, with its message of love, self-acceptance, and forgiveness (with an inviting layout of big print sprinkled with lots of margin art) is like one of those cakes with beets snuck in: sweet, tasty, and surprisingly nourishing" - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books"Amber tackles some tough questions and issues that middle graders face, and she does it with Judy Blume-esque humor, with a touch of Dork Diaries/Diary of a Wimpy Kid slapstick...I loved this book and how it uses humor to take the sting out stressful situations facing kids these days." - Mom Read It"DREAM ON, AMBER is a strong example of contemporary realistic fiction. It addresses modern topics, such as fitting in, bullying and growing up, that many readers will be able to relate to. Amber is a unique and relatable voice for what it means to have a multicultural background. The novel also provides insight into single parent households and the impact this may have on the children in the family. " - KidsReads

A Wonderful Voice; an Overlooked Gem By Pop Bop There are lots of books out there that are supposed to read and feel like the first person narratives of 11/12 year old girls contemplating their step up into middle school. Some are heavily plotted or in some way fantastical, and some focus on the slightly exaggerated problems of everyday life. The tone can be wistful, or snarky, or angsty, or precocious or played mostly for laughs. The "problems" they address can be over-the-top, gritty in an after-school special sort of way, humorous, or romantic and boy-centric.This book is a bit more emotionally grounded than that, and is one of the few books I've read that scores consistently high marks for the characters that have been created, authenticity, plotting, the honesty of the problems addressed, deadpan humor, and, for want of a better word, wholesome decency. Each character is reasonably complex; each has a reasonable balance of good and bad traits, and each is revealed, at some level, to be basically sound. The result is that the book feels earnest and real, addresses common problems and issues with honesty, and somehow comes out on top with a feel good resolution that doesn't at all seem phony. Our heroine Amber isn't perfect, but she's as good as she needs to be and better than most. Her Mom, grandmother and sister feel like real family members. The adults in her life are adults, with all of the pros and cons that go with that. Amber's sister, Bella, is a classic annoying little sister, but she has surprising depth and is allowed to be more than a cliche. The affection that binds Amber's family seems real. And this is balanced by the sadness that weighs down everyone as a consequence of Amber's father's absence. The author has taken a real chance - the family was simply abandoned by the father, and Amber's yearning to have a Dad or at least to know why her Dad left is heartbreaking. But of course this is the central event that gives power, energy and meaning to everything else that happens in the book. The author has a delicate touch and pulls off the whole exercise without ever drifting into the maudlin or precious. As you might expect, Amber often narrates with a wisdom and eye for detail that's way above what you'd expect from an eleven year old, but I'm happy to suspend disbelief on that point in order to allow the author to slip in some sly, edgy, deadpan or vinegary comments, through Amber, that liven up the narrative. Almost every author has to do that sort of thing with adolescent narrators, and here it's done almost seamlessly. So, all in all this turned out to be a touching, funny, upbeat and insightful work that had numerous rewards, big and small, on almost every page. A very nice find. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

I found that it was fast paced and interesting. I always seemed to be pulling ridiculously large smiles and very loud laughs as i read the book. Amber was definitely the funniest character in a story i have read and always seemed to come up with an imaginative way to get through her life. I am looking forward to reading more books by Emmah Shevah.

Fun, Appealing Character But Ending is Too Pat and Easy By KarenRachel Dream On Amber is the story of an 11 year old biracial girl who is spunky and clever who lives with her single mother and younger sister and has a big hole in her heart. Her parents are divorced and she does not see her father. She has just started in a new school and she is lonely, sad and scapegoated by the school bully. In many ways this is a typical middle grade story of a young girl growing up yet I really appreciated the how genuine the characters felt and how it was easy to relate to Amber's struggles. I liked her and rooted for her. I especially appreciated the story line about Amber's efforts to understand her biracial identity and what it means for her. However, for me, there is a confusing split in the book. Amber's father is absent and that is hard. She is biracial and that is a challenge but the two story lines don't really connect. I think the book would be stronger and deeper if it did. I imagine her father's absence is painful for many reasons, one of them being that her Japanese identity is not reflected in her family and her community. Finally, I thought that the story ends too pat and easy. Most times children begin to fit in new schools/situations little by little but Amber becomes the BEST at the art show, becomes instantly popular and she has revelations about her family and identity that most children at that age can't really have (though they can start to). So, all in all, I liked the book but didn't love it. I would recommend it to girls and boys of that age if they want to read an enjoyable and funny, sometimes poignant story with a happy and easy ending.Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book for an honest opinion.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Still worthy of perusal, a hundred years later! By Hakuyu [...] Over several runs, all I got - after keying it in, were references to a recent study of Legge's career as a Christian missionary. That is a pity, because Legge gave us our first, full length translation of the Yi-Ching - directly into English, as part of Max Muller's 'Sacred Books of the East' series. As such, we are still indebtted to Legge. Inevitably, Legge's translation was followed by others - not least, the Wilhelm/Baynes Yi-Ching, now regarded by many as the definitive version. Others have followed - and, understandably, many would now regard Legge's rendering as somewhat passe. Two things have worked against Legge's favour here - the rather unhelpful layout of his material (complicated by an obscure transcription of Chinese names/terms) - and, Legge's occasionally pedantic manner, evident in foot-notes etc., reflecting the stiffer side of his Victorian Christian background. Still, these faults notwithstanding, Legge's translation per se was in fact quite good. As Raymond Van Over has remarked in his introduction to this revamped edition of Legge's Yi-Ching: "Some criticize Legge for his strict scholarship and point to Wilhelm's identification with the Yi-Ching . . .as evidence for preferring the Wilhelm/Baynes translation. This merely indicates a lack of familiarity with Legge's material. Although Legge was more of a sceptic and less of a mystic than Wilhelm, he was nevertheless an inspired translator - one who recognised the need for a creative identification with the original author that went beyond syntax and grammatical knowledge. As Legge explained, 'the written characters of the Chinese are not representations of words, but symbols of ideas, and not representation of what the writer would say, but of what he thinks.' Thus, the translator supplies not just equivalents, as in translating from one Western language to another, but the syntax itself - the thought of the writer. This is a difficult task and takes scholarship, empathy and humility. As Raymond Van Over goes on to say - " To make his translation readable and at the same time indicate what he had supplied himself, Legge enclosed in parentheses his own connective words and phrases. This convention is at first glance disturbing to the reader, but one soon becomes accustomed to it and has the satisfaction of knowing what is in the original and what is merely the translator's reading of the source. In his description of the translator's mood, Legge describes the attitude not only of the wise translator, but also of the questioner of the Yi- Ching. "When the symbolic characters have brought his mind en rapport with that of his author - there is not so much an interpretation of the characters employed by the writer as a participation of his thoughts - there is a SEEING OF MIND TO MIND " (reviewer's capitals). To say the least, this is a far cry from some of our latter-day Yi-Ching translator/interpreters, who seem to be working with the motto 'obscurem per obscuris' - that the more ill formed and chaotic a translation of Yi-Ching text happens to be, the closer it must be to the original. Happily, not all contemporary Yi-Ching scholarship is conducted in this manner. Scholars the calibre of Richard Rutt impart a genuine sense of continuity to Western Yi-Ching studies. But we might divest ourselves of the thought that everything new is better. For all his Victorian traits, Legge was an astute and gifted translator, his version of the Yi-Ching having life in it yet. Convinced of its merits as a translation, but aware of its drawbacks, vis-a-vis layout, transcription etc., Raymond Van Over has effectively re-arranged the order of Legge's Yi Ching material, modified the transcription etc.- to make it more amenable to contemporary readers. He has provided the text with a fresh introduction (Legge's original Preface and Introduction appears at the back), notes about divination etc. The text comes complete with Legge's appendixes, the Ta-Chuan etc., and extensive references to the Chinese classics cited in the Yi-Ching, which Legge had translated as independent works. Facsimiles of Legge's manuscript published under 'Sacred Books of the East' are fairly easy to get. But for sheer handiness, Raymond Van Over's revamped p/back edition, put out by Mentor Books, is highly recommended.

Exposing the strategies of that impostor'self', how to put an end to those strategies, how to bring the impostor "self" to a final end, thus ending all suffering and sorrowand remaining in the true Self whose nature isinfinite-eternal-awareness-love-bliss,are the primary purposes of this book."The demands of the ego or the impostor self are insatiable. When the ego's demands are not met, it becomes frustrated, disappointed, angry, bitter, jealous and complaining....on the other hand when the ego's demands are met, after experiencing brief happiness it becomes bored, greedy, spoiled, perverted and self-destructive. The ego's idea of utopia is an unattainable dream and it'll find a way to make itself miserable regardless of external circumstances. Thus one is caught in a vicious cycle of of birth, old-age, sickness and death, leading a life of slavery and suffering. The only solution to free oneself is to turn inward towards the true Self, the source of true happiness and bring the ego (the impostor) to a final end. This book is unique contribution. It is an Instruction manual for Enlightenment! It contains extremely practical step by step instruction to the 'direct experience of reality'. The first three chapters are devoted to understanding the Impostor (ego) and tricks of the Impostor and how it keeps one from waking up. These chapters are extremely insightful and I personally found it very useful. One of the several ego's tricks which I Identified in myself after reading the book was a preference to engage in endless reading and discussion instead of devoting time for actual practice. Then there is a chapter on the importance of ' The desire for freedom' and how it can dissolve all obstacles to enlightenment. There is a chapter devoted to 'How to awaken the desire for freedom' which is also very insightful. There are three meditation practices offered for daily practise as the 'most rapid and direct means to direct experience of reality'. The first one is the 'Awareness Watching Awareness'(AWA) method, and the second one is the 'Abandon Release Method' (ARM), and the third one is the 'Loving Consciousness Method' (LCM). According to the author AWA is the most rapid and ARM is the second most rapid method followed by LCM. These three methods alone are worth the value of the book.In Chapter 6, the author reports how he discovered the Awareness Watching Awareness method after finding the common thread among various spiritual teachings and filtering out the unessential parts. He also reports how he brought his ego to a final end. The following quote's from chapter 6:"The results were Instant! From the very first moment one tries this practice, one is abiding as awareness! There is no waiting! It is easy. This is not meant to implythat from the beginning the ego ends.It takes years of continuous practicebefore the ego meets its final end. However, from the moment one tries this easy tounderstand practice, one is abiding as awareness!"In 'Chapter 8: Further Clarification of The Awareness Watching Awareness Method', The author gives extremely practical tips and pointers to address any questions which might cloud the meditator's mind during practice. There are also several supplementary methods which are not meant for daily use but can be practiced once or twice to get a deeper understanding of the primary method. There is also a chapter titled 'Reminder' which is meant to be read everyday to motivate one to practice the methods every day. There's a chapter called "Loving all Method" which is meant for daily use during normal activities when one isn't meditating in silence. It's a great method to help you stay in equanimity, joy and love regardless of external circumstances. There chapter titled "Experiences, the Journey and the Final Goal" is the biggest chapter in the book. This is an extremely valuable chapter for any person on the spiritual path. Many practitioners fall prey to "Spiritual experiences" and it's not too uncommon for unwary practitioners to mistake such experiences as final liberation. The chapter offers valuable guidance and tips on how to deal with various kinds of spiritual experiences. The chapter also highlights the importance of Spiritual Practice in bringing the ego to a final end and exposes the trap of "Intellectual Spirituality"."Because the true Self is eternally perfectawareness-love-bliss and eternally free of all suffering, some people think there is no need for spiritual practice.Such a notion is an ego preservation strategy. The purpose of practice is not to gain the true Self. The purpose of practice is to remove the illusionof a body, a world, suffering, etc. so that what remainsis only the eternal experience of the True Self.In other words, those who have let the ego trick them intothinking there is no need for spiritual practice, because the True Self is eternally free of suffering, etc.,are still having the experience of suffering, a body, a world, etc. Thus their experience is not consistent with the factthat the True Self is eternally free of suffering and perfectly blissful. This is an example of 'Intellectual Spirituality'."In the movie matrix, the character Neo is a seeker of Truth. He meet Morpheus who offers him a choice:"You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes."This book "The Direct Means to Eternal Bliss" is the red pill of spirituality. If you read the book and sincerely apply the teachings in the book, you'll start seeing through the matrix, the ego illusion. Your life will never be the same again. Awakening to your true Self will become the number one priority and this book will be your best ally."Suppose someone begins the study and practiceof a spiritual or religious teaching.Thought says 'I am sincere; I really intend to attain thegoal of this teaching.' However, there is another deeperlayer of thought that knows it has no intention ofever attaining the goal of spiritual teaching. Thus the aspirants imagine they are sincerewhen in fact they are not sincere. That is an example of self-deception.Self-honesty is the cure.Self-honesty begins by actually becoming awareof the layers upon layers of self-deception.Devote your life to truth and freedom."The speed of results is directly proportional to you intensity of desire for Freedom, and the intensity of self-honesty. In my case, in the first few years of practising at least 2 hours, I experienced a lot of peace and bliss. I developed full faith in the direct path teachings outlined in the book. In later years, when I tried to increase practice time, I ran into deeper layers of Self-deception within myself. I discovered that my ego did not really want to end. The enlightenment sought by the ego was a state of enlightenment it could come back and tell its friends about! Another ego preservation strategy. when deeper layers of ego became aware that Freedom is not FOR the ego, but FROM the ego, it tried to put resistance against direct path meditation practices. But I had consumed the RED PILL, and there was no going back to a normal life seeking meaningless ego goals or follow some psuedo spiritual teaching that allowed the ego illusion to continue. Everytime I tried, the suffering of perpetuating the ego illusion just asserted itself. It became clear to the ego that it had to end in order to experience permanent happiness. When I became honest with myself and tried to awaken the extremely intense desire for freedom, the practice became far more effective. Peace and perfect clarity returned, and I was able to see through the matrix again. I still have ways to go, and haven't reached the final end of the ego yet, but I have seen the light at the end of the tunnel. If you seek direct experience of Truth, this is probably the only book you need. All other books can be given away. From personal experience, I have absolute faith in the words of this book and highly recommend it to all sincere seekers of Truth!

I have studied directly with two Teachers whom I consider Enlightened. This is by far the most useful Teaching I have come across. There are so many key insights that are extremely helpful. The book offers unparalleled clarity on discerning the difference between the True Self and the imposter ego. It offers an experiential way to see directly that one's thoughts are leading one away from Truth while pretending to lead you toward the Truth. It reveals that awakening the Extremely Intense Desire for Liberation will solve every problem an aspirant could ever encounter and then guides one in awakening that desire. It then clarifies the practice of diving into the Heart as recommended by Ramana Maharshi and other Great Sages and gives clear instructions on how to do that. This alone makes this book extraordinarily valuable. The instructions on how to practice Self-Abidance from other Great Teachers have always been vague to me. Describing this practice as Awareness watching Awareness makes Self-Abidance immediately accessible. I truly believe this is one of the greatest Spiritual books ever written. In short, it provides everything a Truth Seeker needs and nothing that is not needed. The more I practice the teachings in this book, the more I realize how fortunate I am to have come into contact with such a rare Jewel in a world full of false teachings.Read this book many times very slowly. Contemplating each line. Put it into practice and dedicate yourself to the Truth that you discover. The author has compiled several books of quotes that support this book and help to increase one's clarity and devotion. However, I would read this one first, as it provides a much greater context for studying the other material.

It cuts to the chase and gives an amazing practice that puts you in Truth so that the false can more easily melt away in day to to day life. I have done a ton of meditation in my life and this book is meditation itself. I have already bought several copies for family members/friends. It is truly divine! I will be reading it over and over again for many years to come. Get it, you won't be disappointed!

Best Ebook The Divine Conspiracy Continued: Fulfilling God's Kingdom on Earth, by Dallas Willard, Gary, Jr. Black

Dallas Willard, the author of the bestselling spiritual classic, The Divine Conspiracy, now fulfills his revolutionary vision of how the kingdom of God is made real on earth in this sequel, the last book he was working on before his recent death.

In The Divine Conspiracy, revered Christian philosopher and scholar Dallas Willard critiqued the church's obsession with "sin management" and revolutionized our understanding of true Christian discipleship. Jesus is not a remote savior, waiting to welcome us into heaven after we die, Willard argued. He is a dynamic living force, a leader and teacher to whom we apprentice ourselves to learn the sacred skills God wants us to embrace, and to fulfill His son's vision when Christ declared that the "kingdom of God has come."

In The Divine Conspiracy Continued, co-written with theologian Gary Black, Willard lays out the next stage in God's plan as this generation of disciples, including ordained and lay leaders, step into positions of authority across our culture and begin to transform the world from the inside out. To fulfill the Christian calling is not to remove oneself from the outside world and take shelter from its shortcomings, Willard reminds us, but to step into the world to lead and serve as agents of change.

The Divine Conspiracy Continued: Fulfilling God's Kingdom on Earth, by Dallas Willard, Gary, Jr. Black

Review “I know of no more important voice on spiritual truth in our day than that of Dallas Willard. To be able to receive fresh words from him along with Gary Black on the reality of the kingdom in our midst is a priceless gift to every follower of Jesus.” (John Ortberg, author of Who Is This Man?)“I consider The Divine Conspiracy to be the most important book in the field of Christian spirituality written in my lifetime. In The Divine Conspiracy Continued Dallas Willard and Gary Black Jr. expand and enrich the themes that moved us so deeply.” (Richard J. Foster, author of Celebration of Discipline)“The name ‘Dallas Willard’ is one you hear a lot in our house. He’s somewhere between a family member and a saint to us, as we’ve been so deeply, totally shaped by his words and ideas. I’m so thankful for this beautiful book.” (Shauna Niequist, author of Bread & Wine)“I will return to [this book’s] teachings again and again. May the Kingdom come!” (Joseph Maciariello, The Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management, Claremont Graduate University)“For those of us who desire to influence the culture in a distinctively Christian way, this is must reading.” (JP Moreland, author of The Kingdom Triangle)“The Divine Conspiracy shaped an entire generation. Now Willard and Black have turned their attention to leaders becoming Christ-like disciples instead of institutionalized church members . . . reshaping our thinking at an even wider and deeper level.” (Scot McKnight, Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary)“For every follower of Christ who seeks to be a light in and through every vocational and professional arena of contemporary life. Willard and Black tell us all how we can live truly significant lives in God’s Kingdom—now.” (Bob Buford, author of Halftime and Drucker & Me)“Willard and Black offer leaders a hopeful vision that steers the wobbly structures of this world onto the road of love, justice, and truth.” (Richard Swenson, M.D., author of Margin)“Willard and Black have given us a prophetic writing, so bold that if embraced and embodied might just produce a Christian community that actually is ‘salt and light’ to a world in desperate need of it!” (Keith J. Matthews, Azusa Pacific University)“Good, new, surprising, and challenging ideas at every turn.” (Robert F. Cochran, Jr., Pepperdine University School of Law)“A fantastic book … a grand masterpiece for how to pursue and embrace personal transformation in order to be God’s transforming agents in the world. These pages are filled with the great themes that call us to pursue and embrace the with-God life that is life indeed.” (Gayle Beebe, President, Westmont College)“Helps us know better how leaders can mobilize as disciples of Christ to renew truth and justice within the modern world. Don’t miss this book.” (Greg Forster, author of Joy for the World)“Dallas once said ‘True social activists are those who live as apprentices of Jesus in their ordinary relationships.’ While many try to change society by laws, Willard and Black illustrate that changing society requires leaders, in every area of life, to live a Christ-like life.” (Ihab Beblawi, M.D.)“An invaluable resource that can help pastors enter more fully into their congregation’s world and discover together the wisdom of Jesus and the way to real life.” (Mike Lueken, coauthor of Renovation of the Church)“Divine Conspiracy, [Willard’s] most famous study, showed how a kingdom theology oriented Christians toward such a spiritual formation process of transformation into Christlikeness. . . . The Divine Conspiracy Continued takes his divine conspiracy theory into the public realm, [specifically] into the realm of leadership and influence.” (--Scot McKnight, Jesus Creed)

God's Plan for Leaders

Dallas Willard's bestselling book The Divine Conspiracy revolutionized how we understand Christian discipleship. Jesus is not a remote savior, waiting for us in heaven after we die, Willard taught, but a leader and teacher to whom we apprentice ourselves to fulfill what Jesus had in mind when he declared that the "kingdom of God has come." In The Divine Conspiracy Continued, Willard and theologian Gary Black Jr. lay out the next stage in God's plan as this generation's disciples enter into positions of leadership and transform the world from the inside out. Christians are not called to protect themselves from the world but to step into the world to lead and serve, and in doing so, bring the kingdom of God to earth.

As one who has read and re-read Willard’s previous books for years, I always found myself fascinated with the summary implications he tended to sketch toward the end of his books. Particularly in the final chapter of The Spirit of the Disciplines, titled “The Disciplines and the Power Structures of This World,” Willard intriguingly used broadly descriptive language to portray how disciples of Jesus in all walks of life would affect the entire world for good. Whereas that chapter was the brief, general description of how that would happen, this book is the detail that I and many readers of Willard’s previous work have been longing for. Some readers who expect another “spiritual formation” book similar to Willard’s previous work may find themselves initially disappointed. Even though it is thoroughly consistent with Dallas’ previous writings, it is also very different. However, the book should be very appropriately be found on the shelves of readers of spiritual formation classics, because it is the most thorough, inspiring, and thought-provoking explanation yet available on how true Christian spiritual formation is always, inevitably for the sake of others. “If there is to be a next stage to the so-called spiritual formation movement, this must be it.” (Kindle loc. 711)Following Willard’s death, when I first heard that this book was to be released and had been co-authored with Gary Black, Jr., I was initially skeptical. I’m not alone in saying that The Divine Conspiracy transformed my understanding and practice of Christianity, so to have a follow-up to such a masterful book to be co-authored by someone I didn’t know of and released after Dallas’ death made me expect a letdown. However, Black proves himself to be up to the task of coauthoring a book whose title will invite such high expectations. Having been a close friend of Willard, as well as having focused on Willard’s theology for the subject of his PhD studies and first book, The Theology of Dallas Willard, there is no one better qualified. As anyone familiar with Willard would hope and expect, this book will make the reader think and requires willingness to do mental work and be challenged. It is well worth the effort, though, for it is a gift for all of us who long and hope for the day when the kingdoms of this world will conform to the kingdom of our God and Christ.

I am a layperson who's life trajectory was seriously altered by Dallas Willard's epic book, "The Divine Conspiracy". If that book was the "Hallelujah Chorus"....what I would have loved to see next was something extremely accessible ...the "Jesus Loves Me" or even the "Happy Birthday" version of his work. This book assumes the top-down model. (Leaders, Pastors, Professionals...etc) are going to be agent to lead the rest of us to the preferred future. I'm not confident that model is going to prevail. It is the model that has got us where we are now, and keeps us from advancing, or takes us in the wrong direction. This book co-opts the radical message of Dallas Willard, (and Jesus for that matter) back into the institutional model. The realm of changing the grass roots through the trickle down of the elite. I think when Jesus talked about servant leadership....he meant that the janitor might be the leader...not that the elite were going to (as is commonly seen) pretend to be a servant. I think it's going to happen through the grass roots and the individual. There is a lot of good content in the book...but I'm pretty sure it's playing to the wrong audience.... the professional clergy.

I have read virtually all of Dallas' books and always thought he had a very important ministry, this book drives that point home in no uncertain terms. This is the ball hit out of the park.I think that Dallas, and many other important Christian scholars, would agree that the Christian gospels consists of Gods 3 step plan for human transformation.Step 1 - a person believes - a person comes to believe in God, that God is good, that God sent Jesus to help us and finds faith in their heart. They are saved, possibly baptized, and are re-born. Step 1 =s the gospel preached in many churches today - you profess faith, you are saved, you're going to heaven when you die - not hell. In the meantime you should read the bible and watch a lot of TBN. (we've learned about it and decided to play )Step 2 - a person loves - because of the power of Gods love in us we begin to trust in Jesus more and more and eventually choose to become his disciples. As his students we learn to live within that constant interaction with God/Jesus/ the Holy Spirit - and as a result our spiritual formation, our reliance on the Zoe ,the disciplines and the "with God life", we become vessels that can more accurately reflect Gods grace, light. love and care for others, - we are being transformed into Christ-likeness. The call to, and instructions for this type of interactive discipleship was the subject of most of Dallas previous work. (Hearing from God, Spirit of the Disciplines, Divine Conspiracy, Renovation of the Heart ) God is forming our character with our consent and by our request. It's the second step that makes us ready to be team playersStep 3 - servants lead - The graduates of step 2 who have been tamed and shaped by the spirit are to take their place in Gods grand divine conspiracy, and lead humanity out of the darkness and into eternal life. That's what this book is about - the hope for humanity's future! Could a bunch of spirit filled God lovers, love a people back to life with Gods help? Willard and Black think they can certainly put some effort into it! The good thing about God being in charge - the outcome's his.If every Christian did what is described in this book, and in Dallas other works on spiritual formation, both their lives, and the lives of many would be dramatically changed! The whole world could be saved. That's going to take a lot of home runsThat's the hope throughout this book. Dallas is summing up the vision he has, the joy that we will experience as we submit our lives, character, and kingdoms to God's! It's basically an instruction manual how to overcome the fallen world system, peacefully, and with Gods support. What more noble pursuit could you possibly be involved in?This book is much more in your face, straight to the point reading. (If you're afraid of being convicted of your lifestyle/character failures you might want to go back and read some of Dallas' other works first.:) In this Divine Conspiracy there are not many really long sentences that you have to read multiple times over to make sure you've extracted all the information. I like that. I think it's also that in this book Dallas and Gary are pulling out all the stops. If some areas were a little fuzzy before, here they're in sharp focus and you see their application. This is the gospel applied - and if we apply the gospel the way it is prescribed (this book being the prescription) we will most likely become, in very short order, the happiest people on the planet. I say Let's Do This! I'm on it and all in! Be part of the solution and get with the program! Read It. Do It. Live each moment the way it was meant to be lived - with God! I'm pretty certain that I will read this book repeatedly and that like Dallas other works, I will ask God write it on my heart so I can live it.

In No Strange Land illuminates the richness of mysticism--in the life of Philip Neri--as an "experience of the activity of God." The life of the Apostle of Rome demonstrates that it is primarily people, not arguments, that reveal the mysteries of God. Philip's experience of God, his mysticism, was given him for the sake of others. Furthermore, that experience itself was embodied; that is to say awakened, nourished, and brought to fruition within the religious tradition into which he was born, and from which he lived--in particular the Church of Renaissance Florence and Rome, with its own particular appropriation of Christianity. It is this sacramental life that places mysticism beyond the merely private and esoteric, and allows for the mystic, in Newman's phrase, "to use this world well." With great deftness, Fr. Robinson traverses biographical, historical, and theological domains as he examines the nature of experience, the roles of knowledge and love in prayer, and the primacy of grace in the accomplishment of salvation. Informative and engaging, In No Strange Land is an outstanding contribution to Renaissance biography, historical theology, and the study of mysticism.

In No Strange Land: The Embodied Mysticism of Saint Philip Neri, by Jonathan Robinson

From the Back Cover "Anyone interested in St. Philip Neri will surely find something of great value here. In a way, it is a study of 'mysticism' in which Philip is the case-study. A wide-ranging and wise book."--JOHN RIST, author of Real Ethics and Plato's Moral Realism"In this lucidly argued and very readable book, Fr. Jonathan Robinson interweaves an attractive portrait of the great sixteenth-century reformer St. Philip Neri with an equally persuasive reworking of themes in classical Catholic doctrine of the spiritual life, thus inviting readers to reflect on our own hopes for sanctity in the midst of an indifferent and even deeply hostile cultural environment."--FERGUS KERR, O.P., author of Twentieth-Century Catholic Theologians and After Aquinas"A resident of Rome cannot avoid walking streets where even after more than four centuries the memory of St. Philip Neri remains alive. Turning a corner on some narrow Roman lane, as it were, in Jonathan Robinson's new book we encounter this remarkable saint--one of the great mystics of the Church, a living witness to us, as much as to his contemporaries, of the reality and mercy of God. Father Robinson breaks new ground in this highly original study of St. Philip Neri, presenting a new perspective on the character and mission of the saint."--ARCHBISHOP J. AUGUSTINE DI NOIA, O.P., Assistant Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; author of The Diversity of Religions: A Christian Perspective"Jonathan Robinson offers an intensely thoughtful and impressively well-informed investigation of Filippo Neri and his age--subtly nuanced but clearly and cogently expressed, imbued with deft humor and wry understatement. An intriguing account of a remarkable individual's life and faith, this book also figures as a major achievement in the field of contextual history--illuminating the human realities of sixteenth-century Florence and Rome."--EDWARD GOLDBERG, author of After Vasari and Jews and Magic in Medici Florence

A biographical portrait of the mystic Philip Neri also showing how ordinary Christians can walk the mystical path By MDLION An interesting book that blends a biographical portrait of St. Philip Neri with a study of mysticism in Philip's life with a discussion of how mysticism is possible in the life of the ordinary Christian. Don't be intimidated, Father Robinson has a writing style that flows easily and draws the reader in. During my first reading session, I read the Preface and into the Introduction where I came across a couple of interesting quotes:"[T]he glory of God breaks through the carapace of unbelief and indifference by means of the holiness of the saints." (P. 6)"[T]he Christian mystic is driven by his contact with the hidden God to share with others what he has learned in the darkness. The summit of Christian mysticism is not an experience of the self but a participation in the love of God that led to the redemption of the world through the life and death of Christ." (P.10)Next, I couldn't help going to the chapter whose title interested me the most, chapter 8, "The Catacombs and the Apostolate" (PP. 175-189)."Darkness and quiet obscure the visible world, freeing the spirit to reach out to the invisible. ... The ascetical life and his studies led Philip to St. Catherine of Siena's 'continual humble prayer,' and he was drawn to the catacombs where, without distractions, he could 'pursue the truth and clothe (himself) in it." (PP.175,178)From the catacombs chapter I learned something I didn't know:"It should be noticed that the catacombs were not hiding places in times of persecution: 'The catacombs were never a place for the living to take refuge but they were a place where the living could gather in union with their dead in prayer and ritual meals. But above all, in an age when the Christians had few or no buildings of their own on the surface, they were an eloquent statement of the Christian understanding of death, encircling the vast, noisy, dangerous, filthy and glorious city of Rome.'" (P. 180)With darkness a theme in the book, there are numerous mentions of the Carmelites saints, particularly St. Teresa of Avila, along with St. John of the Cross and St. Edith Stein (Teresa Benedicta of the Cross).Though St. Philip lived and died a virgin, chapter 2, "Chastity and Charity" (PP. 71-86), discusses how temptations against chastity led Philip to be a compassionate confessor to those struggling with unchastity:"Even people seriously trying to be faithful Christians are sometimes caught up for years with sins they seem to be able to do nothing about. ... The Christian's work is to struggle against the soul's sinful tendencies and so enter in a personal way into the Lord's passion and death. ... The dominant note of Philip's dealing with those harassed by sexual difficulties was always patience and compassion, a patience and a compassion he had learned through his own struggles. ... Philip was called 'good Philip' because he had learned to live a chaste life in a difficult environment. Later on, as a priest in Rome, he brought the mercy of God to those who found chastity difficult. He had learned, first hand, what this meant in the Florence of his boyhood." (PP. 85, 80, 86)But the chapter also contains a sentence that needs to be shouted from the rooftops today:"[T]he use of the word 'love' is not a kind of permission that justifies any sort of sexual behavior." (P.80)The words "love" and "freedom" oughta sue, these days, for when many people mention them, they are really talking about "lust" and "license". True love is sacrificial and faithful.Anyone interested in Renaissance Florence will probably also enjoy this book as it is a frequent topic.

A concrete example of mysticism with St. Philip Neri as our example By Stuart Dunn Strangely enough, I first learned of St. Philip Neri from a children's book entitled Philip Neri: The Laughing Saint. In this book I learned about his joker personality when he was a child, but I also learned about what a great mystic he was. After reading this book, I was inspired to learn more about this great saint. Therefore. I knew I had to read the book In No Strange Land when Angelico Press published it.The book begins with a lengthy introduction on the subject of mysticism and how it can be a misunderstood and intimidating term. It continues by describing the mystical states of consciousness. Other topics broached in the introduction were Thomas Aquinas and "The Weight of God." The book then gives us a background on St. Philip Neri and the world he grew up in. Both time and place were great influences on his life and his spirituality. We also learn of the great influence the Dominicans had oh his education. In fact the whole first part of the book is about how Florence shaped Philip and what effect this had on his spirituality and mysticism. Part Two focuses on his time with his uncle in San Germano and Part Three focuses on his time in Rome after his ordination. The central theme of this book focuses on the three stages of spiritual growth. Different saints through the ages have different viewpoints for what these three stages are, but essentially they deal with beginning the journey, making progress on the journey, and arriving at the journey (or perfection). The three divisions of this book and the three divisions of St. Philip Neri's life reflect the central theme of this book. With this purposeful division of his book, the author (Fr. Jonathan Robinson) masterfully weaves biography, history, and Catholic spirituality into readable chunks. Reading through this book, I feel like I have a better understanding and appreciation for Philip Neri the man and Philip Neri the saint. Fr. Robinson also managed to make mysticism more approachable by using a concrete example of one man. Instead of presenting an overall abstract definition of mysticism, he presented Philip's life to us and showed us that mysticism is attainable. If you would like to learn more about this saint, his life, and Catholic spirituality, you will want a copy of this book.

God has a plan to make you stronger--and it's not what you think. When we think of success, we think of words like bigger, more, and better. Bigger paycheck, more security, better reputation. But what if God's perspective on success was radically different than our own? What if the things we seek to avoid--pain, suffering, weakness, insecurity--were the very things he used to mold us into his image? With insights born from his own difficult journey, Clayton King offers a truly liberating understanding of weakness and suffering--not as God's punishment, but as his pruning. Revealing the God who is a companion in our most difficult seasons, King shows us that when we are in Christ, our deepest pain becomes the source of our greatest power, and our times of testing become our strongest testimony. If you struggle to make sense of this broken world or your own seemingly hopeless situation, you'll find in this book not only hope for a brighter future but purpose in the imperfect present."This book is more than a page-turner. It's a game-changer. It's courageous. It's bold. It's vulnerable and funny and redemptive. Oelger Clayton King recently spoke at our church in Kansas City and I bought this book from him after the service. I paid full price for the book and I am reviewing this book with no promise other than a fair review. Before hearing him speak, I did not know Clayton personally or by reputation, but I was familiar with many of his fellow pastor-friends and contemporaries, such as Johnnie Moore, David Nasser and Perry Noble, following them through social media and/or keep up with their teachings through podcasts. On staff at South Carolina’s NewSpring Church and Anderson University, and Clayton King Ministries, King's in-person delivery and message did not disappoint. My sole disagreement with him was his personal description of himself as a "country boy." While he was dressed in jeans and a casual shirt, I noticed his rather spiffy-looking loafers as he left the stage. In my experience, most country boys would wear jeans and boots versus loafers, but this is likely an inconsequential observation. What a great book! As humans, we live in a fallen condition on an imperfect planet. As such, we will experience times of trouble, loss, disappointment, abandonment and discord. These times can and will test believers and non-believers alike. Contrary to "prosperity gospel" messaging, Christians will deal with the same challenges in life as non-believers. It is how we deal with these times that can point the way to Christ. If we're going to get through these challenging times, we need to be equipped with the tools to respond effectively and obediently. Stronger was written to help each of us deal with these challenges. The unique approach of this book is in the actual story itself, because Clayton uses his unique account of personal loss to give hope to every reader. We all have a story, a unique narrative of failure, success and just life that relates the actions we have taken motivated by the thoughts in our heads. And Clayton’s story of loss is both challenging and inspiring. After praying for God to use him, Clayton experienced a succession of family losses over a twelve-year period. This is not to suggest God was punishing, or even testing Clayton. Rather, God used this unique story of loss to prepare him to minister to others. His story is unique to him, but his story and what he learned in coping with loss can benefit every reader.Walking through chapters like Humility, Vulnerability and Worship, Clayton lays out specific approaches to help anyone deal with loss. Combining thoughts and quotes from a disparate group of history's thinkers (GK Chesterton, Maya Angelou, the Apostle Paul, CS Lewis, Brene Brown, Tim Keller and Cormac McCarthy, for example) Clayton encourages us to embrace our challenges to learn more of God and his grace, in other to point others to Him. While introducing him, our pastor said he had laughed and cried as he read Stronger. He was right, and I think you will agree as well. God has his hand on Clayton and can use his story to help you deal with tough times through the message of Stronger.

When it comes to the chorus, there is a sense of deep comfort to sing: "And now, let the weak say I am strong; let the poor say I am rich; because of what the Lord has done... Give thanks."When the tough times comes, the tough gets going. Hard times can beat us down, but they can also reveal God's strength in us. This is the essence of this book, written by founder and president of Clayton King Ministries. Also a teaching pastor at NewSpring Church, King lives through really difficult times. One such time is having to deal with nine deaths in his family, and him giving a eulogy for every one of them. He believes in what Tozer said that it takes one who had been deeply wounded to be able to be used by God in demonstrating the deep love of God and the wide extent of grace. For King, hard times may make him unhappy, but in God's grace, they can make him holy. If there is no death, there is no resurrection. If there is no cross, there is no empty tomb. If there is no crisis, there is a lack of opportunity to demonstrate God's power over all. This is not to say that crisis is a tool for God's ends. It is to say that regardless of what happens to us, it is the Lord who always holds up his end of the bargain, even when we feel down and out. Things that break him are the very things that God uses to draw the suffering closer to himself. Ten chapters demonstrate what strength in God means for the author.First, King starts with what it means to be at the throes of brokenness. All kinds of things from bones to hearts; from relationships to spirits; from physical to spiritual; we are all susceptible to being broken in a broken world. King writes about how he finds strength as he searches for the light amid the cracks in a dark moment of his life. Weaknesses and problems are not to be avoided but embraced. For brokenness often precedes blessings. Second, the things that hurt us can very well humble us and teach us the essence of humility. With humility comes honesty. With honesty comes an open invitation to follow after the ways of Christ, who himself was humble and honest. In Christ, we see the full revelation of how power is made perfect in weakness. He ties in the presence of weaknesses as a way in which we can grow intimacy with God. King says it well: "Hard times make us humble, and humility makes us stronger." Third, we need not be ashamed to share our testimony of our hard times. The scars are real and keep us truthful. With the scars, we are reconnected back to the times of lowliness and learns all over again to be grateful and to be humble. It also tells us what it means to be human. Fourth, when troubles and persecutions come, when tough times and panic situations approach, we become more attuned to the presence of God. Suppose we are exempted from the tough situations of life, will we then fail to appreciate God more? In other words, when there is no going gets tough moments, how is a tough person able to get going? Fifth, we look at strength and learn that the true source of strength and power comes not from within us but from the Word of God in us. It was at the cross where God's power was made manifest in full. Sixth, we need to learn to live a life without regret. It is like crying over spilled milk. Our attitude should be like Paul who leaves all these things behind and to press onward toward the prize that God has called him to attain. For our biggest messes can become our biggest messages from God to us. Seventh, we learn vulnerability need not shut us down but opens us up for courage, for strength, and for truth bearing witness. It is also an invitation toward intimacy with God. Eighth, as we take the bull of hard times by the hands of faith and courage, we grow in understanding. We are able to pray the most difficult prayers, say the most difficult truths, and testify in the most daunting circumstances. Above all, we see God's purposes in all things, even in our suffering. Ninth, we are lifted up above our lives of mediocrity into a life of worship. We want to lift up the Name of Jesus. We move from human positioning toward a heartfelt posture of letting God take control. Worship, weakness, suffering, and submission are all on the same side of intimacy with God. Tenth, at the end of it all, we will find it all worth it because God's glory will be revealed. This eternal glory, just like 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 says, will make all of our endeavours, our sufferings, our pains, our trials, all worth it.This is a powerful book based on the sheer strength weaknesses, sufferings, pains, and trials. The waves of difficulties may try to wash over us and to drown us. The tsunamis of challenges may not seem to end. Just when it is dark and bleak, the gospel comes like a knight in shining armour to lift us out of the difficult times. This book at times looks like a modern rendition of 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 where Paul himself survives on the basis of Christ's Word, that God's power is made perfect in weakness. If you are discouraged, read this book and recognize that you are not alone in your struggles. If you are in despair because of the circumstances you are facing, there are stories in this book that reminds you that God strength is made perfect in our weaknesses. If you are depressed, disillusioned, or in some sort of distress, work through the specific chapters according to where you are, and let the testimonies of the author and the stories told within bring some comfort and assurance. Above all, may the content of the book draw you closer to Christ, and to remind you in a special manner that God cares for you, and desires greater intimacy with you.One does not need to feel depressed or disenchanted before picking up this book. You can start preparing it for yourself or the people or community you love. For troubles and challenges of life will come. It is simply a matter of when. Just like Paul urges the Ephesians to put on the armour of God, we can put on the armour of God's Word and presence as we prepare ourselves to battle the onslaught and deceptions of the devil. Be strong and courageous in the power of God's might.Rating: 5 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me courtesy of Baker Books and Graf-Martin Communications in exchange for an honest review.
