As a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I have been trying, with lukewarm success, to get him interested in the books. We read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone together, and while he enjoyed it, it didn't knock his socks off, as I was hoping. Enter Steve Potter into the picture, and the kid is eating it up, drawing all sorts of comparisons to the HP book and now we hope to have the Cave of Secrets available by the time we finish HP and the Chamber of Secrets so he can do the same. In his case, I'm just thrilled that he was able to find a book that keeps his interest and keeps him reading, and hopefully opens up the possibility to explore other, more traditional books.

What happens between book 9 of the Young Wizards series, "A Wizard of Mars," and the forthcoming book 10, "Games Wizards Play"? Diane Duane answers the question in this volume, collecting together the three canonical works that constitute a "transitional trilogy" between books 9 and 10 -- a 150,000-word extravaganza of untold tales to help keep you going until the tenth book comes out in February 2016. "Interim Errantry" contains: The novella "Not On My Patch", the tale of an unusual Halloween in the Young Wizards' neighborhood, featuring overage Trick Or Treating, suburban zombies, and the Attack of the Killer Pumpkins. The novelette "How Lovely Are Thy Branches", a holiday-themed Young Wizards story in which an alien wizard who looks a lot like a Christmas tree gets the gift he wants most -- decorations -- and a memorable party and sleepover party are disrupted by a superblizzard and an incursion of alien ghosts. And finally, the new original Young Wizards novel "Lifeboats", the tale of a distant world threatened by unavoidable doom, an intervention that takes thousands of Earth's wizards, young and old, into harm's way, and a Valentine's Day that absolutely doesn't go as planned...

It's a fun holiday for the wizards, because it's one of the few occasions on which they can be relatively open with their magic--and this year, it's Tom and Carl's turn to host the "haunted house" that rotates among the local senior wizards. At the start of the story, Nita is reluctant to cut into the pumpkin that is supposed to be the Callahan family's jack o'lantern, but she finally does what any wizard would do: asks it. Jackie has an entirely different perspective on life and death than animal life, and is happy to be a jack o'lantern. Nita's wizard friends are a little amused when they realize she's named it, slightly concerned when she refers to Jackie as "he," and of course it's inevitable that Jackie will become a key factor in resisting a sneak attack by the Lone Power, who tries to make Halloween really scary again. This was a lot of fun.How Lovely Are Thy Branches is a novelette featuring the young wizards' old friend Filif, the tree-like alien wizard who was a houseguest of the Callahans in a previous adventure. Thanksgiving is coming, and Nita is having a very hard time with this first Thanksgiving without her mother. She wishes they could skip right to Christmas--and Kit's sister Carmella pulls Nita into planning a holiday party and sleepover for a few days before Christmas. The guest list will include their offworld wizard friends, including Filif--who has been excited about Christmas ever since he learned Earth people had a holiday involving bringing trees inside and decorating them. This one, unfortunately, is a nice enough story, but very slight.Lifeboats is a short novel, and the real meat of this collection. The planet of Teveral is about to become uninhabitable; its moon, Thesba, is starting to break up and will rain its fragments down on the planet. There's very little time to move the inhabitants and enough of their biosphere elsewhere to save them, and the job is complicated by the fact that not all the Teveralites are willing to go. It's a huge undertaking, and Nita, Kit, and Ronan are among the wizards drafted to help manage the worldgates that will transfer those willing to evacuate to their new homes. Nita and Kit are assigned to different areas, and Kit spends his off-shift time getting to know colleagues of species he hasn't encountered before, and the Teveralites' octopus-like pets, called sibiks. One of those sibiks gets lost from its owners, who are among the natives refusing to leave, and begs crackers from Kit. And as Kit gets to know this particular sibik, and realizes how much he wants to get back to his family, he also finds an important clue to why so many are refusing to leave. This might be the key to making this intervention more successful than anyone had hoped. This is the strongest of the three stories, and it's funny, heartbreaking, and moving by turns. And while I'm not sure about the other two, this one is published in this collection for the first time, and is Hugo-eligible for the 2016 awards at MidAmericonII.The is is a very satisfying collection for fans of the Young Wizards. Recommended.I bought this book.

Unlike the other books , were the wizards go into the clinch with the Lone Power , these tales are different of feel , they are more about friendship and not so much about the never ending conflict with entropy . They are just as good , just as exiting and interesting as usual but it's more about working in a group . The first is about Halloween - of course things go wrong and there is lively action - spoiler alert ! ( zombies ) . The second is about Christmas - with a live tree and a lot of laughter and jokes - the third about Valentine's day - will Kit get his nerve up and tell Nita how he feels or not ? In between they have to save an alien race ,explain Earth movies to aliens and firmly put two hooligans on the right path . No job is too small or big for the wizards . So they are all about holidays , they all include a group of friends - old ones , new ones - on how to party with aliens and family alike and about good times . They are great tales , all three of them . The last one was very technical about gates , I learned a lot , it's like the technology is really out there . I definitely will reread that one and take notes , it was very interesting . And this from someone who has sometimes trouble with getting on internet . All in all , I would recommend these tales as a good addition to your library if you are already familiar with the universe of the young wizards . I would not recommend that you start with these , you might drown in the many names and references . Start with the first book , still one of the best .

Harry Potter taught me how to read. Young wizards taught me that other books were worthy of the same attention as Harry Potter, if not more. The first time I read one was forced on my by my 6th grade teacher, and it was Wizards Abroad. And when I realized there was more, no one could keep me away from the books.I have been an avid follower of the series ever since and when new books come out, it's like Christmas. And this one especially. Ha.Two wonderful short stories that have little or really no conflict in them, and instead are just the overworked Heroes getting some much needed relaxing and bonding time. One novel length story that deals with issues even our heroes haven't yet faced. This books everything. And as the series growers, so the characters and the author grow, and the content. Parts of this read much more of a true young adult book ( meant for young 20 somethings) then a teen reading material. And there is not one thing wrong with that at all.Since that first book all those years ago I've expanded my lain ready so much that the top 5 spots of my favorite, absolutely best loved books ever, have been very coveted and fought over constantly by books and characters. And this books just barged in and earned itself one of those a 5 spots, sitting unabashed among giants such as Thud from The Discworld series and the Wolves of the Calla from The Gunslinger series.

Leonard Stringfield was born in 1920. He was director of CRIFO (Civilian Research, Interplanetary Flying Objects) - one of the world's largest research groups during the mid-5Os, and publisher of its newsletter, ORBIT (1953-1957). He also worked in cooperation with the United States Air Force (1953-1957), investigating and reporting UFO activity, having been assigned a special code number for reporting to the Air Defense Command in Columbus, Ohio. For over 30 years, Stringfield served in several of the major UFO organizations in a public relations capacity. From 1957 to 1970, he was public relations adviser with the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). Later on, he was Director of Public Relations and a board member of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He was also a regional investigator for the Center for UFO Studies, directed by Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Stringfield was an executive with DuBois Chemicals, an international manufacturer. Stringfield retired in 1981 as Director of Public Relations and Marketing Services for DuBois Chemicals, a division of Chemed Corp., after 31 years service with the company. From 1967-1968 he served as Early Warning Coordinator for the University of Colarado UFO Project, screening UFO reports for possible scientific study. Stringfield was also an advisor to Sir Eric Gairy, former Prime Minister of Grenada, 1977-78, during his efforts to establish a UFO research agency within the framework of the United Nations. Stringfield passed away in 1994, leaving a string of fascinating publications behind, one of which is "UFO Crash Retrievals: Status Report II: The UFO Crash Retrieval Syndrome - New Sources, New Data," based on a talk Stringfield gave at a MUFON convention in 1978. This is the second volume in Stringfield's influential 7-part "UFO Crash Retrieval Status Report" series, in which he lays the groundwork for the theories that made him famous. In looking at various UFO crashes throughout the U.S. in previous decades, Stringfield, the first researcher to exclusively focus on UFO crashes, shares many intriguing details about a number of major UFO cases. This extremely rare volume has been lovingly reproduced exactly as it was first published 35 years ago. The material inside, which was shocking to many observers in those days, is finally gaining acceptance. Today, Stringfield's sober, objective research on crashes like Roswell and Kecksburg seems increasingly relevant. In a field filled with pretenders, Stringfield shines as the "real deal."

Mr. Stringfield, in his long and distinguished career in the area of UFO Research was an amazing guy. He is deceased now but what research, what investigations, what truths he did find in those many years. Absolutely amazing. Mr. Stringfield was a nuts and bolts person, one of the best. He did not delve into the occult side of UFO Research, though the enigma is so bizarre that there is an definitely an occult side to the phenomenon. Crashes, forced landings, retrievals, dead bodies, live creatures, and back engineering, this is what Mr. Stringfield worked on and exposed. Proof, there is no proof when those agents in charge of the greatest cover up since the birth of Jesus Christ, work overtime to hide, deceive, distort, misinform, ridicule, disinform, and threaten. Those early crashes of one race's devices, was the responsibility of another race acting as an extortionist. The human race today is being both deceived by our small, very select and very secretive group of humans. And we are being deceived by the extraterrestrials themselves.

Present and past residents of a countryside English vicarage search for love Marin Ellis is in search of a new start after her father and his second wife die in a car accident leaving her the guardian of her fifteen-year-old half-sister, Rebecca. They choose the picturesque village of Goswell on the Cumbrian coast and settle into Bower House, the former vicarage, on the edge of the church property. When a door to a walled garden captures Rebecca’s interest, Marin becomes determined to open it and discover what is hidden beneath the bramble inside. She enlists the help of local gardener Joss Fowler, and together the three of them begin to uncover the garden’s secrets. In 1919, nineteen-year-old Eleanor Sanderson, daughter of Goswell’s vicar, is grieving the loss of her beloved brother Walter, who was killed just days before the Armistice was signed. Eleanor retreats into herself and her father starts to notice how unhappy she is. As spring arrives, he decides to hire someone to make a garden for Eleanor, and draw her out of―or at least distract her from―her grief and sorrow. Jack Taylor is in his early twenties, a Yorkshire man who has been doing odd jobs in the village, and when Eleanor’s father hires him to work on the vicarage gardens, a surprising―and unsuitable―friendship unfolds. Deftly weaving the dual narratives, Katharine Swartz explores themes of loyalty and love through her memorable characters and strong sense of place.

The Lost Garden (Tales from Goswell), by Katharine Swartz

Review "Katharine Swartz can do no wrong. The Lost Garden navigates loss and hope with Swartz's deft hand and unflinching ability to tell a quiet story so well it resonates in the heart for a long, long while after the final page." (Megan Crane, USA Today Bestselling author of Once More With Feeling 2015-03-25)"Katharine Swartz always delivers a beautifully written, deeply emotional read. The Lost Garden is a touching and tagic novel, and yet ultimately it is a story of both hope and redemption." (Maisey Yates, USA Today Bestselling author of Part Time Cowboy 2015-03-25)

About the Author

After spending three years as a diehard New Yorker, Katharine Swartz now lives in the Lake District with her husband, an Anglican minister, their five children, and a Golden Retriever. She enjoys such novel things as long country walks and chatting with people in the street, and her children love the freedom of village life―although she often has to ring four or five people to figure out where they’ve gone off to!

She writes women’s fiction as well as contemporary romance for Mills & Boon Modern under the name Kate Hewitt, and whatever the genre she enjoys delivering a compelling and intensely emotional story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Intertwined Stories in a Lost Garden By Amazon Customer The Lost GardenBy Katharine SwartzLion Fiction, 2015Two stories set a century apart intertwine in Katharine Swatrz's "The Lost Garden," the second book in her Tales from Goswell series. In the present, Marin Ellis assumes guardianship of her younger half-sister, Rebecca after the death of their father and Rebecca's mother. Unsure what direction to take in her own life, Marin yields to Rebecca's plea to give them a fresh start by purchasing Bower House, a former vicarage in England's West Cumberland. A locked door to an apparent lost garden intrigues the sisters and they are enveloped by its history.Meanwhile, the garden's origins and the post-World-War-I lives of the home's previous inhabitants, Eleanor Sanderson, the vicar's daughter and her sister, Katherine unfold as men return from battle and people try to resume their lives. The two tales skillfully are shared intermittently with every other chapter so that the stories unfold simultaneously, but without the jarring that sometimes can occur when the timeline shifts in novels. We also don't get a chance to forget what is happening in one story before moving on to the second.Similarities surface in the stories as we see how the sisters learn to relate to each other and to the other people in their lives. Marin and Eleanor also have father/daughter issues to work through as well as how to work through grief. And of course there is some romance. The stories are fairly predictable, but in a pleasant way. I hadn't read the first book -- this sequel stands on its own -- but I had been drawn to the book because of its "secret garden" plot. I wasn't disappointed. The book impressed me with its well written dialogue, often using vernacular, and Swartz's strong descriptive style with metaphor that puts us in the setting and gives clear understanding of what the characters are experiencing.A nice example:"Carefully she lifted her skirt and moved through the garden. She had never walked the full length of the place, and now she studied the old slate path that had been buried under the soil and which Jack had scraped clean. He'd shown her the path when he'd first cleared it . . . and Elanor had studied them scrupulously, simply to have a moment alone with Jack."Touches of faith add to the characters, but are not overbearing. Makes me want to go read the first novel, The Vicar's Wife, also dual stories separated by decades.A free copy of this book was provided by the publisher at my request.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful book By Mrs. Kimberly S. Napier I admit, there were things about this book that made me choose to read it. First, the title reminded me of The Secret Garden, second the setting in England and finally, the time post WWII and today. I know I could have set myself up for disappointment, but this book filled me with satisfaction. This book, The Lost Garden, in 1919 show us Eleanor Sanderson who has lost her brother. To help her through this time, her father hires a gardener to bring the garden to its previous glory. Eleanor gets to like Jack, the gardener. The garden is the central theme throughout this story line. Then in the current time, a big sister, Marin has guardianship of her younger half-sister, Rebecca. They move to the house that the Sandersons lived in. The goal is to overcome the sudden death of their parents. Rebecca becomes interested in the garden, so Marin hires someone to help them bring the garden back to life. They find out the history of the garden and the story becomes woven around the garden.I think you can tell that I fell in love with this book. The characters are so believable, the story is a steady, easy read, or at least it was for me.I was given this book by NetGalley and Lion Hudson Fiction in review for my honest review and I want to express my thanks to them.

Review: 'The Lost Garden' by Katharine Swartz By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" The life of thirty-seven-year-old Marin Ellis is turned upside down when her father and his second wife unexpectedly die in a car crash and Marin becomes the new guardian for her fifteen-year-old half sister Rebecca. In order to give them both a fresh start, Marin decides to move to a small village on the Cumbrian coast, to an old property named Bower House. Soon after their arrival, Rebecca discovers a door that leads to a walled garden. Marin can't help but be intrigued by the garden and together with the help of local gardener Joss Fowler she tries to discover its story, which eventually brings them back approximately 100 years to the life of vicar's daughter Eleanor Sanderson, and bring the garden back to life.I thoroughly enjoyed this book; what a great read! 'The Lost Garden' has everything I look for in a novel: a captivating storyline (in this case even two fascinating plotlines that were linked to one another), an interesting and in-depth group of characters, a well-paced and comfortable writing style, and a lovely setting. I was already taken in by the book as soon as I had read the first few pages and didn't grow tired of it, not at all. I especially loved the two storylines featuring leading characters Marin and Eleanor and the historical jump of 100 years back in time (I love books with both a modern-day storyline and one set in a different time period), and how the characters' stories were connected.Marin and Eleanor were great protagonists who each had their own individual story to tell, while at the same time there were numerous parallels between the two characters and the things happening to them. The aspect of the mysterious and beautiful gated garden was something I particularly loved and I really enjoyed the author's descriptions, making it easy to see it all in my mind. I really don't have anything negative to say about this read; I already can't wait to pick up Katharine Swartz's next work! 'The Lost Garden' is a beautifully written, moving and engaging piece of historical fiction with a good touch of romance; a wonderful read which I couldn't get enough of!

Being an East L.A. native myself, I found that when I dove into this book, my heart and soul became one with the stories that were told. I recommend this read to all that are interested in the Paranormal as well as east L.A. history and lore.

By Lourdes Briseno As a native of Boyle Heights I grew up hearing various stories of paranormal activity, but never really wanted to believe. It was always easier to accept those tales as folklore, than real occurrences. The author put together a compilation of stories involving places and moments in time that have haunted our dreams through the years. He did a wonderful job of documenting first hand accounts of the people who experienced visitors from another realm. A bone chilling read!

I have been to some of this sites myself and they just confirmed my suspicion and gut feeling about these places that I felt in person. Stories all very well told and definitely draw you in.

The Amish lifestyle may be simple but when it comes to love and romance, nothing stays simple for long. Great series that was an easy read, clean and kept my interest in the challenges the various characters faced. Also can't go wrong with this series priced at .99.

It is always interesting reading about the lifestyle of the Amish. The challenges and how they were resolved of characters in the stories of the book were very interesting. It is certainly understandable how the Amish are skeptical of dealing with Englishers. The flare taken in these stories are refreshing and interestingly written. I highly recommend reading this book of short stories.

Joseph Smith taught that the origins of modern temple ordinances go back beyond the foundation of the world.1 Even for believers, the claim that rites known anciently have been restored through revelation raises complex questions because we know that revelation almost never occurs in a vacuum. Rather, it comes most often through reflection on the impressions of immediate experience, confirmed and elaborated through subsequent study and prayer.2 Because Joseph Smith became a Mason not long before he began to introduce others to the Nauvoo endowment, some suppose that Masonry must have been the starting point for his inspiration on temple matters. The real story, however, is not so simple. Though the introduction of Freemasonry in Nauvoo helped prepare the Saints for the endowment — both familiarizing them with elements they would later encounter in the Nauvoo temple and providing a blessing to them in its own right — an analysis of the historical record provides evidence that significant components of priesthood and temple doctrines, authority, and ordinances were revealed to the Prophet during the course of his early ministry, long before he got to Nauvoo. Further, many aspects of Latter-day Saint temple worship are well attested in the Bible and elsewhere in antiquity. In the minds of early Mormons, what seems to have distinguished authentic temple worship from the many scattered remnants that could be found elsewhere was the divine authority of the priesthood through which these ordinances had been restored and could now be administered in their fulness. Coupled with the restoration of the ordinances themselves is the rich flow of modern revelation that clothes them with glorious meanings. Of course, temple ordinances — like all divine communication — must be adapted to different times, cultures, and practical circumstances. Happily, since the time of Joseph Smith, necessary alterations of the ordinances have been directed by the same authority that first restored them in our day.

It writes of Jewish women of great distinction in short yet clear autobiographical sketches. It however diminishes its own value but including a too large number of present- day celebrities and lightweight figures. It too displays a certain political bias and there are a number of very left- wing politicians here whose contribution to Jewish life is extremely questionable. I also would have like to have seen many more of the great Jewish women intellectual figures, and heroines like Avital Sharansky , Ida Nudel and others who risked their lives for the Jewish people. A very large share of the entries are of people who have no real positive connection with Jewish communal life, and who just happen to be born Jewish something a few of them are not so happy about. There is much good stuff here. But a work of this kind could have been done with far greater emphasis on real Jewish values.

Kingan While there are some genuinely great Jewish women in this book, there are too many whose claim to greatness rests solely on fame and left-leaning politics. How is Barbara Streisand a "Great Jewish Woman"? Is it because she is a great Democtratic fundraiser? And How does Shulamit Aloni get to be great? By being an anti-Israeli Israeli? Diane Arbus (eeww) hated being Jewish and would be uncomfortable to see her name in this book if she hadn't killed herself, and Estee Lauder became a Roman Catholic........not exactly a "Great Jewish Woman".If your idea of greatness is actresses and singers or anybody Jewish who managed to get her name in the paper than this is your book. Rosalind Franklyn and Judy Resnick constitute real greatness, while Goldie Hawn is merely famous. I would never put them in the same category.

Recently, 5 middle aged plus women in my congregation shared in a B'not Mitzvah Service. They were just as excited as the young ladies to get this book. It's fun watching them scan the contents and remark, "I didn't know xxx was Jewish?!" Perfect for any age. PG

The Reverend Howard Finster (1916–2001) was called the “backwoods William Blake” and the “Andy Warhol of the South,” and he is considered the godfather of contemporary American folk and visionary art. This book is the first interpretive analysis of the intertwined artistic and religious significance of Finster’s work within the context of the American “outsider art” tradition. Finster began preaching as a teenager in the South in the 1930s. But it was not until he received a revelation from God at the age of sixty that he began to make sacred art. A modern-day Noah who saw his art as a religious crusade to save the world before it was too late, Finster worked around the clock, often subsisting on a diet of peanut butter and instant coffee. He spent the last years of his life feverishly creating his environmental artwork called Paradise Garden and what would ultimately number almost fifty thousand works of “bad and nasty art.” This was visionary work that obsessively combined images and text and featured apocalyptic biblical imagery, flying saucers from outer space, and popular cultural icons such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Henry Ford, Mona Lisa, and George Washington. In the 1980s and 90s, he developed cult celebrity status, and he appeared in the Venice Biennale and on the Tonight Show. His work graced the album covers of bands such as R.E.M. and Talking Heads. This book explores the life and religious-artistic significance of Finster and his work from the personal perspective of religion scholar Norman Girardot, friend to Finster and his family during the later years of the artist’s life.

Envisioning Howard Finster: The Religion and Art of a Stranger from Another World, by Norman J. Girardot

Review "Entertaining and insightful . . . a thoroughly researched and illuminating book."--John Foster"Raw Vision" (10/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap “Utilizing an original religious-studies perspective, Girardot opens up the scholarship on the visionary image maker who thrust the imagination into uncomfortable spiritual acrobatics and countercultural mythological intuition.”—David Morgan, Professor of Religious Studies, Duke University, and author of The Embodied Eye: Religious Visual Culture and the Social Life of Feeling

“Envisioning Howard Finster is a mythological tale rooted in serious and extensive scholarship that greatly enriches our knowledge of Finster and his context in late twentieth-century American culture.”—Colin Rhodes, author of Outsider Art: Spontaneous Alternatives

“Introducing astute comparisons between Finster and other artists, spiritual leaders, and historical figures, Girardot raises timely, provocative questions regarding Finster’s place in the art world, Southern evangelical Protestantism, popular culture, and American history.”—Tom Patterson, freelance writer, independent curator, author of Howard Finster: Stranger from Another World and St. EOM in the Land of Pasaquan

About the Author Norman Girardot is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of religion at Lehigh University.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Creative, Mind-Altering Work By Donald P. St. John When in 1981 I joined the faculty at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA—across the river from Lehigh U., Norman and I were about the only full-time History of Religions people in the six colleges and universities that make up the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges. I was thrilled to meet Norman, already known for his work in early Daoism and his training under the great Mircea Eliade. Little did I know that this whole other side would explode with its creative genius and crazy wisdom drawn from “outsider art” and finally focusing on Howard Finster, a “self proclaimed Stranger from Another World.” But Norman is blessed with his own wise strangeness, something like the characters in the work of my favorite Daoist writer, Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu). I shared Norman’s appreciation for shamans, mystics, visionaries, artists, storytellers and super-weird people but he was infinitely more versed in the scope and depth of these individuals (and others). One cannot imagine that anyone not himself or herself full of visions and “out-of-this-world” insights could have written this book. That is Norman—or a part of him. This book is not an academic tome meant to analyze some “interesting” person but an act of tremendous imagination and artistic expression in itself. Norm calls Howard Finster “an extra-terrestial evangelical preacher-prophet-artist from northwest Georgia” but in reading even parts of this work one is led brilliantly and poetically by Girardot into so many incredibly rich and varied sides to this artist that we conclude he escapes any categories, no matter how suggestive. And Norman shows how he is connected to so many other figures in religion and art that one would not at first blush imagine possible. But that is due in part to Girardot’s own holistic vision and his creative juggling of so many different “odd-balls” from varied cultures and times who turn out to be windows on the many levels of the cosmic-earth-human process (to allude to the vision of my mentor, Thomas Berry). Do yourself a favor and read this book. Take your time. Savor its bits and pieces (for it is the varied strewn jigsaw pieces of the lost Whole that through imaginative, mystical tasting, seeing, hearing we recapture something of our identity as humans and the paradise world once lost but always inviting us to reenter through the arts, myths, rituals, visions…) Thank you Norman through your own creative pen and Finster’s brush for reviving wonder and faith in deeper powers within us and the world.

Major Howard Finster was an itinerant Baptist preacher and jack-of-all-trades handyman in a backwater town of northern Georgia when he suddenly received a vision (embodied in a smudge of paint on his finger) that commanded him to create sacred art. Over time, teaching himself the techniques of painting and sculpture, he produced a voluminous body of work, including the Paradise Garden, a sculptural environment made of concrete and found objects, and thousands of paintings and prints (all carefully numbered and dated) featuring written messages and a private vocabulary of images that included angels, Coke bottles, Elvis, and space ships. Discovered by dealers in “outsider art,” he became something of a celebrity during his most productive years in the 1980s and early 90s. During that time Norman Girardot, a professor of religion studies at Lehigh University, made frequent trips to visit Finster, and came to know him well. In this remarkable book, Girardot reflects on his long association with Finster and on the meaning of his work. Girardot is an excellent writer, and his rich, hypnotic, and almost incantatory prose is the perfect vehicle to get to the essence of Howard Finster in the context of an extended meditation on the intersection of art and religion. This is a deeply thoughtful book, and a fascinating read.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Read this book, if you like to think about art. By Jimothi DiFonzo This book was just released last week, but I have already read it several times. If you have ever been tempted to dismiss Finster, you won't after reading this book. Girardot makes a convincing arguement that by the time Finster was at his peak, in the 1980's, he was using skills that he had perfected over a lifetime as a preacher and tinkerer. Skills of media and message, myth and meaning. Skills that made his craft appear deceptively easy -- like the work of a child, or a fool, or even a stranger from another planet.Although this is in many ways an academic text, Girardot's writing is delightful, at times bordering on poetic. In this sense the book is much like his previous books. But because of Girardot's many years of friendship with Finster, and his family, the book is filled with personal memories and reflections. It is clear that Girardot has thought and wrote about Finster for decades.
