0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Scripture in Simple Terms By Joshua Olds Ages: 2-6Themes: Christmas, EasterPurchase Price: $3.54Two stories in one book! The Little Bible Heroes flip-over book series is an easy to read and fun to look at retelling of biblical stories in a way that even the youngest of children can understand.Easter/Christmas covers the two major stories of the Gospel: the Incarnation and the Resurrection. It’s a perfect pairing that will go a long way in teaching your child the message of Christianity. Each story is 14 pages long, with text on 7 pages and 1-4 sentences on each of those pages. Author Victoria Kovacs uses simple words, allowing new readers to work through this story on their own, sounding out the words as they go. Because the story contains “Bible words” like disciples and resurrected, you may want to read through with your child to explain those terms. The Easter story focuses on Mary Magdalene at her experience at the tomb. I thought this was a nice, personal touch because it personalizes what can sometimes be an overwhelming story filled with detail. This makes the story focused on one person’s response to the resurrection. The Christmas story is just as fun, although it does commit the cardinal sin of having the Magi at the manger. That’s a pet peeve of mine. It’s a common—almost universal—portrayal, but does not fit the historical account. The illustrations by Mike Krome are vibrantly colored and makes good use of shadow and shapes to draw young readers in.Overall, I love the idea and the execution of this series and this specific title. It’s often difficult to simplify the grand stories of Scripture in terms our littlest ones can understand and B&H Kids has done a great job with that.

PDF Ebook The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ: An Interpretation, by Rev. Alban Goddier

The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by bishop Goodier, takes the subject of Christ's life from the coming of John the Baptist until his last day before Palm Sunday and the beginning of His passion.

In this work Goodier sets out not merely to write another life of Christ or follow the mold of a devotional work or a scientific analysis but to transcend both to apply logic and reason combined with Catholic faith to understand who Jesus was, and what was the impact of his public life, what was it like for those there, what did his disciples and enemies think?

Goodier's text is descriptive, lucid, and original, not being loaded up with quotes from other authors. Moreover, it is entirely faithful to the text of the Gospels and harmonizes the four narratives into one account spanning the three years of Christ's public life before His passion.

In this text you will find Bishop Goodier faithful to the Gospel narrative unlike many writers in his time who applied the historical critical method to such lengths that they had rejected the gospels themselves as witnesses. Goodier notes in his introduction: "Hence in a work of this kind it has not seemed necessary to introduce any discussion concerning the four Evangelists, the authenticity of their work, or the special characteristics of each. These have been examined and proved by writers far more skilled and learned than the author and he is content to accept their decision referring readers who would examine these sources to them. On the other hand, when accepting the Gospels, he accepts them wholly and entirely. It seems to him a futile attitude of mind to take a source as authentic, and then, almost entirely from internal evidence, to proceed to whittle it away. For instance, let us take the miracles. Not only do the four Evangelists record them, but they record them as an essential part of their evidence; so essential, in every case, that if they are eliminated their whole concept of Jesus tumbles to ruins. There is scarcely any miracle which may be canceled without involving in its fall many other portions of the Gospel; eliminate them all and there is virtually nothing left. Far more fair to the facts, even from the point of view of the rationalist historian, does it seem to the author to take the evidence as he finds it, make of it the best he can, put faith in those whom he professes to acknowledge as his only safe guides, build up his picture of Jesus as they have built it up and with the same material. If he accepts some evidence and rejects the rest, this at least he must confess: that the conclusion he draws, whether true or not, cannot possibly be the picture drawn by the four Evangelists. In the present work the four Gospels have been taken simply as they are given to us; the question has been simply asked: What is the Jesus of the four Evangelists like?" (From the Introduction)

This reprint from the 1944 edition has been made faithful to the original in every detail, retaining UK spelling standards found in the original. The only changes made are the correction of errata in the original text.

Additionally, artwork from the Renaissance and Baroque periods has been added which is not in the original to aid the reader. This is not a facsimile copy.

Prehistoric Actual Size, by Steve Jenkins

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 5–The exciting artistic presentation that worked so well in Actual Size (Houghton, 2004) is equally successful when applied to prehistoric creatures. Progressing chronologically from a dot-sized protozoan of 550 million years ago, Jenkins has chosen the animals and the portions of them to depict to great effect. Cut- and torn-paper figures reveal texture and delicate details, from the long wings of an early dragonfly to the feathered tuft of an eight-foot terror bird. A three-inch spiny shark stands out distinctly against a page of white space, while less than half of a giant millipede barely fits across two pages. A series of foldout pages reveals one complete small dinosaur (Saltopus), the impressive beak and head of a flying reptile (Dsungaripterus), and the thick claw of a fish-eating dinosaur (Baryonyx). Besides the sheer visual impact, the illustrations often highlight features mentioned in the brief text, such as the sharp beak of Protoceratops. Closing pages offer more information about each species, along with spot illustrations that provide the full-body view necessarily lacking from many of the actual-size renderings. Only 5 of the 17 animals are actual dinosaurs, and the inclusion of mammals, insects, and other groups emphasizes the diversity of life forms over this vast prehistoric span. The largest animal shown is also the most dramatic: the top and bottom teeth of Giganotosaurus fill an entire spread. Sure to elicit plenty of Wows from the 560's aisle.–Steven Engelfried, Beaverton City Library, OR Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist *Starred Review* Gr. 1-3. Children fascinated by Jenkins' vibrant cut-paper artwork in Actual Size (2004) won't want to miss this oversize album of prehistoric creatures that range from tiny to enormous. Not limited to dinosaurs, the animals pictured here include the minuscule protozoa, one millimeter in diameter; the eight-foot-tall "terror bird"; and the Giganotosaurus, which "may have been the largest predator that ever lived on land." The most arresting spreads are those in which the animal is too large to picture in its entirety. Only the Giganotosaurus' huge teeth are pictured (a few of those take up nearly a page), and the head and neck of the large flying reptile Dsungaripterus requires a four-page foldout. The dramatic effect of showing creatures at their actual size is even greater this time than in the first book, which featured contemporary animals. It's certainly hard to imagine that a three-inch shark, a dragonfly with a two-foot wingspan, and a six-foot millipede once actually lived on Earth. Information about and an illustration of the entire creature (not to scale) completes this colorful volume. Diane FooteCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Size matters By E. R. Bird In this crazed topsy-turvey world, it's always nice to have something to hold on to. Like the fact that small children are obsessed with dinosaurs, for example. Year after year, babies are born, mature, and grow into bright-eyed preschoolers who shriek continually for just one thing: DINOSAUR BOOKS!!!!! There are worse things in the world. As a children's librarian I see new dino books all the time and usually they're so dull and rote that it's all I can do to keep from falling asleep as I process them. Now about a year ago I had the good fortune to stumble across Steven Jenkins' brilliant, "Actual Size". Cunningly playing on a child's need to interact with a non-fiction title, Jenkins created gorgeous pictures of large and small animals from around the globe at their actual size. Sometimes only a single eye of a critter would fill a page. Other times, you could fit a tiny monkey within the palm of the smallest hand. "Prehistoric Actual Size" takes the already grand idea of giving us life-sized cut-out illustrations and mixes in the already existing need for dinosaurs, ancient gigantic millipedes, terror birds, and other animals that no longer exist today. And how the children now wish that they did.The book knows who its audience it. It gently shows a tiny morgan's tooth that's a mere 4-inches-long on the title page. From this tiny mammal (an ancestor, one might wonder) we turn the page and find ourselves staring at a particularly malevolent Velociraptor (with feathers, no less). Serving the kiddies exactly what they want right from the start allows Jenkins to insert little-known prehistoric goodies alongside the better known. A tiny protozoan the size of a period in this sentence stands beside a sea scorpion of 2 meters or so. Kids will meet creatures they've never even heard of, like the flightless and eight foot tall terror bird that ran as fast as a modern horse. Or the rabbit-like Epigaulus with horns and long claws to match. By the end they'll have gone close to a baryonyx's foot and counted the sharp teeth in a dinocephalosaurus' mouth. It makes, I can tell you, for riveting reading. It occurs to me now that if you had a kid that was mighty slow in learning his or her measurements, "Prehistoric Actual Size" (and its predecessor, for that matter) might fall into the category of "godsend". Think about it. Each illustration of a creature in this book comes with a small bit of text underneath the image explaining how large the creature was. Let's say you want to teach kids their inches. Just open the book up to the picture of the Saltopus and point out that this smallest of dinosaurs was a mere 24 inches long. In the case of the Velociraptor, a measuring stick could be laid out on top of the book on the ground and an adult could show a kid just how long 6 feet really are. Kids can imagine the dinosaur reposing on the ground, only its maliciously toothy face visible from the book's pages. Math teachers should sit up and take notice. Measuring prehistoric animals and insects might make boring old inches to centimeter discussions into riveting experiments.Jenkins' illustrations are, as always, remarkable. And for the first time I noticed a real attention to details that most cut-paper artists would never even think of in the first place. Sometimes an animal's eye will contain just the right circle of white felt, giving the eyeballs a shiny glint that would otherwise be lacking. Stare at the pictures long enough and you begin to get a feel for what Jenkins has been able to accomplish.Just in case you pick up this book, flip through it, and give a cry of rage that the critter on the cover is never defined, merely turn the book over and note that on the back cover we are told that this is the beaky maw of an adult Protoceratops. A baby Protoceratops crawls out of its shell to show yet another difference in size. Comparisons between this book and the original "Actual Size" are inevitable. "Actual Size", it occurs to me, did a better job with pure scale. You'd find yourself face-to-eyeball with a giant squid on one page, and then trace the long loopy two-foot tongue of an anteater on another. Here that kind of whimsy is lacking. Jenkins eschews the idea of cramming a creature's extremities (or whatever a tongue constitutes) onto a single page. Though the giant millipede does give the viewer a good visceral shock, the pure pleasure of "Actual Size" feels a bit diluted. A bit strained. Still, none of this is to say that the book won't appeal to the kiddies. I suspect that due to its subject matter, "Prehistoric Actual Size" will be garnering a whole new fan base for itself, all thanks to the dinos within. The idea that something educational can also be fun has been done to death, and usually with deeply un-fun results. "Preshistoric Actual Size" is an exception to that rule. Incredibly informative, beautiful to the eye, and accurate within an inch of its life, Steve Jenkins makes an almost wholly wonderful addition to his already fabulous cut-paper picture books. A title to put Ezra Jack Keats to shame.

But if you're used to his classics like "Actual Size" and "What Do You Do with a Tail Like This?" then you'll probably be disappointed with this book. The quality of the paper illustrations are still pretty good, though not exceptional. Jenkin's other work sets the bar very high. But my main disappointment with this book was that--after getting my hopes up that I'd finally get to see the actual size of all the different dinosaurs we learn about as children (and realize how wrong my concepts were)--I opened the book to find that there's almost no dinosaur whose name I even recognize. Morganucodon? Diplocaulus? Dinocephalosaurus? Saltopus? Dsungaripterus? Leptictidium? Epigalus? To be fair, there are some animals/organisms whose names we recognize (millipede, cockroach, dragonfly, protozoa, velociraptor), but not at all what I would have expected or hoped for.I feel that this book could have been a lot better. Please take my review with a grain of salt. I'm a huge fan of Steve Jenkin's work, and collect almost everything he publishes. I love his work. The illustrations are spectacular, unique, creative, engaging--wonderful! And I love the way he educates and inspires in a fun, creative way. I just don't feel that this is his best book.

Howell Reading this book to my daughter, I found myself placing my hands on the page very carefully, lest I snag my finger on a Baryonyx claw or accidentally touch the Very Large Cockroach. It's not that the illustrations are so terribly life-like. They are clearly pictures. It's just that the effect of seeing these creatures, or in most cases, bits of these creatures, at actual size is so startling. As I type this, I am cringing away from a millipede larger than my computer.Sure, the view from within a Giganotosaurus mouth is striking, but it's the pictures of the creepy crawlies that get to me the most. Dinosaurs are supposed to be huge. Dragonflies have no business being larger than my cat.And once you start thinking about the actual sizes of these things, it's hard to stop. We have a private airport in our town, which means we often see small planes flying just overhead. A few days after reading this book, I spotted a biplane through the moon roof of my car, and for a moment, imagined it was a Quetzalcoatlus, a flying pterosaur with a wingspan of some 35 feet. Unsettling. But if you (or your preschooler) are fascinated with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, an awful lot of fun.(Review originally posted at my blog-- Caterpickles: Scientific & Linguistic Engagement with a 4 Year Old Mind @ [...])

But Alex stopped following conventional plans and decided to spend a whole month focusing on just one book of the Bible. By concentrating on such small passages every day the joy of rediscovering God’s eternal truths returned. He now wants you to do the same and has provided a simple 28 day plan that leads you through short daily readings, thoughts and prayers that will help you come back to the joy of the Bible. Stop worrying about missing a day. Stop worrying about not having time Stop feeling like a “sinner” for having not read the Bible in a couple of days. Try this plan. If you miss a day, or two, a week or even a month and just pick up right where you left off.

Take the next 28 days and allow God’s transforming truth to completely revolutionise your day-to-day.

The author writes as though he were talking to you from across the table and not with a bunch of Bible 'jargon' one should know if he/she went to Bible school.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Book On The Hidden Bible: Genesis By Tom Cooper Of all the books of the Jewish Bible, Genesis is the best known. The most obvious reason for this is simply that it comes first, so that few well-intentioned readers will have given up quite so early. Genesis is the title given to the first book of Moses by its Greek translators. The word Genesis means "origin" or "beginning"; and Genesis truly is a book of origins, or beginnings. Genesis describes the beginning of man and the universe which he lives in and has been given dominion over, the beginning of sin, the beginning of God's plan of redemption, and the beginning of the Hebrew nation through whom God's redemption through the Messiah was to come.In Genesis, mankind’s relationship with the ground is often a measure of the quality and fullness of human life. The first eleven chapters of Genesis tell an authoritative story about the beginnings of the world that contains many contradictions. The central purpose of these introductory chapters is to construct a detailed etiology, or explanation of the origins of the world. Overall, it embraces all of mankind in every nation as it speaks of God as the Lord of all men in the whole human race.

Review

“ Easy-to-read slice-of-life action . . . . Maggie is a likable main character . . . and her anxiety about school is well portrayed, while Hicks's black and white art is sharp and comically expressive.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Friends With Boys started as a daily web comic, still available online, but was designed to work as a book and is a pleasurable read in both formats. The art is easy to follow, lively, and engaging, with plenty of effective silent moments. For all the expected family and high school angst, the book is rife with humor. Maggie is a sympathetic and likeable character and carries the story capably . . . . Hicks handles it all with warmth and aplomb.” ―VOYA

“Fun for kids who can appreciate stories about teen angst that do not wallow in depression or self-loathing.” ―Children's Literature

“The black-and-white coloring adds a nice somber tone to resonate emotional power, capturing a textual tone that moves from comedic to serious.” ―ALAN Review

“Various panel sizes are used to full advantage, creating a cinematic effect that moves from long shots to tight close-ups. Night scenes provide good contrast and heighten the dramatic tension. Excellent pacing gives pause for reflective moments and sets up the action scenes. Hicks is a master of wordless panels, using facial expressions, gestures, and character placement to effectively convey emotions that transcend words. Her artistic brilliance is especially evidenced in the character's expressive faces, particularly the eyes. . . . Originally published as a web comic, this excellent high school drama has already developed an online following. Friends with Boys will win new fans for this talented cartoonist.” ―School Library Journal

“Filling monochrome ink-and-wash panels with wonderfully mobile faces, expressively posed bodies, wordless conversations in meaningful glances, funny banter and easy-to-read visual sequences ranging from hilarious to violent, Hicks crafts an upbeat, uncommonly engaging tale rich in humor, suspense and smart, complex characters. Readers will definitely want to have, know or be Maggie's brothers--but she herself proves to be no slouch when it comes to coping with change and taking on challenges.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Hicks excels at depicting adolescent emotion and the way feelings ricochet off the actions and reactions of others, each teenager suffering a constant and confusing onslaught of hurt and acceptance, infatuation and rejection, loneliness and relief…She also shows flashes of clever humor…But what mostly emerges is a fundamentally sweet and sensitive story, one with a rare, genuine-feeling portrait of loving sibling relations.” ―The New York Times

Adlam When I read the book's inside flap--a story about a homeschooled girl, Maggie McKay, going to public high school for the first time, and as if that wasn't bad enough, she's also (literally) haunted--I was completely intrigued and prepared myself to fall in love. Unfortunately, it didn't happen that way.The artwork reminded me of a classic comic style, but updated and with manga/anime influences, and the black/white/greyscale rendering actually contributed to some of the story's bleaker themes. Each of the characters were drawn with great expression of emotion and the wise arrangement of the panels made them easy to follow, plus it was well-written and well-edited.But as much as I wanted to love this graphic novel, at times I found the main story muddied--it came across as a disjointed telling of too many stories in too short a space--and resulted in some of the themes/characters not being too deeply explored.Basically, Maggie's was a coming of age story which explored themes like adjusting to new situations, socializing, and self-acceptance. On top of that, she had to deal with a number of inner demons--mainly surrounding the estrangement of her mother--which shadowed her literal haunting. However, the literal haunting seemed more like a contrivance to facilitate the story's climax than an integral part of the story.Even with that quibble, I did find the book entertaining. Maggie's story was engrossing and, as a character, she was skillfully crafted. It's unfortunate that I can't say the same of all the remaining characters (at least, not consistently), many of which lacked dimension--again, probably stemming from the trying-to-cram-too-much-in problem I mentioned earlier. The book left various threads untied and questions unanswered (possibly to be answered in future web comics*) and when I turned the final page, although I did enjoy it, I was still a bit disappointed. I should also note that if you're expecting a horror, a supernatural chiller, or even anything remotely creepy, you won't find it in this book.

11 of 14 people found the following review helpful. ordinary life, ordinary story but great artwork By Yoomi I'm torn. I fell in love with Maggie and her brothers. I would have loved friends like Lucy and Alistair in high school. But once I was finished with this graphic novel, my mind was blank. The story felt incomplete. I have too many questions. How did the haunting fit into her life? Why her? And what about the others who could see her but weren't haunted by her? Was it resolved at the end or did she just learn to accept it? Maggie questions her mother's sudden disappearance but the boys and the father just seem to accept it. Considering the father is a cop, it seems odd.If I ignore these nagging questions, it's a great vignette of Maggie's life starting at a public high school after being homeschooled for the first part of her life. The artwork is great and I loved the detail on every page. I just wish there was more to it. I don't expect all questions to be answered in a story (they rarely are in real life, especially in high school) but I felt that these were neglected gaps in the story rather than questions that are left up to the reader to answer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful, subtle coming-of-age story. Highly recommended. By Brad Hawley Brad at FanLit Originally written for the Fantasy Literature review site.Friends with Boys by Faith Erin HicksWhile Image is my favorite major publisher of monthly comic titles, First Second is my favorite publisher with a small output of high quality graphic novels, using the term in a very limited sense to refer to comic books that are complete, unified novels either issued at a single point with no previous monthly issues OR trade collections of monthly issues clearly designed to be complete, sustained narrative stories with thematic coherence (such as Watchmen and Daytripper). Friends with Boys is another excellent First Second graphic novel aimed at YA, and though I certainly recommend this title for a YA audience, I suggest that it will be best appreciated by an adult reader who is willing to read this fast-paced tale very slowly in order to take in fully its visual and thematic subtleties. The story opens as Maggie is about to start ninth grade, her first year of high school. And since she has been homeschooled by her mother, she has never been to a public school and is very nervous the morning of her first day. Her father is a good-natured, long-haired police officer, and Maggie seems close to both him and her three older brothers, all of whom were also homeschooled before starting in public school in the ninth grade. Maggie has two other problems in addition to her stress over starting high school — her mother has left the family after finishing her homeschooling duties for four children, and Maggie blames herself for being too much of a tomboy and never wanting to spend as much time with her mother as she wanted to spend with her father and brothers. Maggie's second problem is that she is haunted by a ghost.I fear that this graphic novel will be too easily passed up for the very reasons that make it such an excellent work of literature. First, the art is just plain beautiful to look at, but its primary function — as it should be — is to tell the story. And since the story acts as a character study of a young girl coming of age, the art focuses on subtle body language and facial expressions. It does such a good job that the novel takes only about an hour to read. Second, the writing is so smooth, there's nothing to slow a reader down. I couldn't stop reading it. I didn't put it down once last night. But now, the next morning as I write this review, I'm ready to read it again in order to appreciate the art on a panel-by-panel basis. The other reason this novel could easily be overlooked is that its greatness comes in subtle moments and in a series of thematically significant anti-climatic moments. For example, Maggie's coming to terms with her mother's departure is not depicted dramatically — it's based on a few quiet scenes, and her ultimate acceptance of the situation is largely internal and thus only hinted at. Her situation with the ghost escalates, but that problem also resolves itself quietly, as it must, given the author's view of life: Our lives change slowly, almost imperceptively, in ways we almost fail to notice ourselves. In other words, Maggie's external situation in the world hardly changes from page one of the novel to the last page. Yet, at the same time, from her perspective, everything has changed because she sees herself and her brothers in a different light. Most of the novel involves Maggie's meeting Lucy, a young girl her age, and Lucy's older brother. They dress a bit punk and are ostracized by the high school in-crowd — the school's volleyball team in this Canadian small town. As Maggie makes friends with them, the story's most realistic aspect is made clear: When we enter a social group for the first time, we don't understand how everyone connects — who likes whom, who used to get along with whom, who is kind, who is popular, and who has specific resentments. And that's Maggie's experience: She tries to figure out how her two new friends fit in at the school and what her brothers think of them and why.Maggie also finds out how her brothers are viewed publicly, what their social roles are, as she tries to establish her own place in this new school. Once again, the author is subtle — we catch Maggie spotting a fleeting look her brother gives her new friends and watch her puzzled look in response to the cryptic facial expression of a brother she thought she knew well. These moments are at the heart of everyday life, and Faith Erin Hicks bases her entire story on those expressions and other subtle aspects of very pedestrian human interaction — and that's the genius of the work.Friends with Boys is a wonderful break from the superhero and crime novels I love — it's enjoyable to read a work that lacks in drama and major events. It makes me see my own life differently, as is often the result of reading the best literature. This novel is a gem that you should buy for your children, particularly if they are in 7th through 10th grade, I would guess. After that, I'm afraid they might not enjoy it again until they are much older. On the surface, it deals with making friends, not judging others, and having crushes. However, no couples even date or kiss in the story; we just see sweet smiles on faces as girls are touched by the kindness of high school boys when they rise above petty behavior. But these typical ethical points are presented as subtly as everything else in the novel, and this subtlety will be appreciated most by adults who give this book the attention it deserves. I really can't recommend this book enough. I can't wait to read more by this author.

By Angie K We received a book last month that was similar to this and I just love it. Inside the book the parts are raised and lowered and with Jax SPD he loves touching objects and books. It has animals in it and he just loves those as well. He really liked to read this book with me. This book is thanking the Lord for all of the things that they have and it really sends a great message to be thankful for everything in your life. As a adult some times we need to be reminded to be thankful for the little things we have such as food and clothing.

Every night my husband and I pray with her and thank God for the food He provided for us, for the beautiful day He gave us, and for our friends and family who love us. These 3 blessings are all included in our newest fit-together shape book book from Tommy Nelson called Count My Blessings 1-2-3. Being thankful for the blessings we have is a something I can teach and demonstrate to my 1 year old daughter right now! She just loves the pictures in this book and I appreciate the reminder to be thanking God for our many blessings. Like all of the Tommy Nelson books we have, this one is very sturdy and stands up to the 'reading' of a 1 year old. Every other page has a 3 dimensional aspect to the illustration and my little girl really enjoys touching the pages as I read to her. This would be a wonderful addition to any children's library! I was provided this book for free from Tommy Nelson Publishing in exchange for sharing my opinions. My review is all my own true opinions.

She goes through the list of all her siblings and her niece. This book shows little ones how to say thanks. There is a page that says "Thank you, as I get dressed, for which sweater would be best"! I love that it shows children to be thankful for even the clothes that they wear. Hopefully, we as parents, have taught this to our children. God gives us so much to be thankful for, everyday. Each of these pages has a 3D page on the left, that fits into the "indention" on the other page. With our youngest being sensory seeking, this is perfect for her. She gets to feel the pages not just read them. As you can see from the pic she loves this book! Tommy Nelson provides us a way, in books, to show our children about God's love.I was sent this book to read and post my honest review

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. After a Year of Daily Poems, A Personal Anthology By Kim Loomis Bennett I already love Two Sylvia Press's Poet Tarot and Daily Poet writing prompts, so I was excited to see this published. It's a generous soft-cover book that has a page for a poem a day. It's got large enough pages for a short to medium poem, depending on how large handwriting is. I also liked the advice given, that there really aren't any rules, which is a great reminder. So sometimes I write in a first draft while following the prompt from The Daily Poet, sometimes I do a few drafts and then write in a polished version, and sometimes I write a poem from the Poet Tarot. I am excited to see how many pages I fill in by the time a year rolls around--then fill in the days I missed the following year.

By Sally Kindred Paired with the engaging prompts in The Daily Poet, this journal is a delightful tool for re-energizing a writing practice and freeing a poet to play on the page and make illuminating connections between exercises. There's a big, welcoming page waiting for each prompt from its sister book--and one for each day of the year, so what accumulates is not only a set of discrete inventive moments, but a journey through the months. The pages are sturdy and delicious to write on--sufficiently heavy to keep my pen from bleeding through, and below each header, tantalizingly large and blank. No lines, so you can doodle all you want. Having the exercises all together like this makes it easy to review and synthesize, if that's your jam, and to see which daily prompts you've missed (so you can fill them in when the year's over, or before). There is an extra page (both sides) for each month of the year where you can doodle/make notes/set goals. While in a world without gravity, I'd love more than one page per prompt, the book would be too big for my backpack then, so I start my drafts in the journal and, if/as they become poems, carry them to another notebook. Still, this journal, with its encouraging introduction and its ability to gather together an accumulating writing practice, inspires me. I feel cheered and ready to write every time I see it on my desk!

Review "Story of the Bible is designed to the “Schoolhouse Model” of education where children of all ages can learn together in their Domestic Church at home. The Activity Book and Teacher’s Manual are easy to follow and will help build a foundation in salvation history to use later in life for the young students. The text is interesting and will be read and re-read, drilling into the student the events that changed the world. These are just a few points that will keep my family using this set for years to come, but the most important point is that the children will learn of their own salvation and will come to know God better, preparing them to serve Him in the future." -Pete Socks, The Catholic Book Blogger"The Story of the Bible product line follows the Schoolhouse Model, which caters to children of all ages, making this product’s use incredibly versatile and cost effective for families with children in multiple grades." -Catholic Sistas"… this is geared toward the homeschool crowd, but I believe any Catholic family with children will find value in this program." -Stuart Dunn, Stuart's StudyWhile there are Catholic religion courses that include activities and helpful resources, this is the first such resource I’ve seen that was designed for Catholic families with children of a wide age span that focuses primarily on the story of the Bible. Catholic families, whether homeschooling or not, should find The Story of the Bible a very appealing resource."-Cathy Duffy, Cathy Duffy Reviews

6 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Makor Scriptural Issues By William Monday From the start this work has its doctrinal issues. It elevates the church as infallible (Catholic) and denies the creation of 6 literal days. This product is for Catholics who habe a low view of the Holy Scriptures. Not for the Christian Church at large. Sad.
