Review “Being Catholic in an imperfect world comes with its own unique set of challenges. In his usual no-nonsense, practical, and humorous style, Dr. Ray Guarendi offers wisdom and insight from an authentically Catholic perspective and with the voice of experience. An easy, entertaining, and enlightening read for Catholics from all walks of life!” —Danielle Bean, publisher, Catholic Digest, and author, Momnipotent “Dr. Ray Guarendi combines his keen intellect, his years of experience as a clinical psychologist, and his hands-on experience as a father of ten to create a book that is as wise as it is warm. When Faith Causes Family Friction is a must-read book for anyone who faces the daunting task of evangelizing to the toughest crowd of all: your own family.” —Jennifer Fulwiler, author, Something Other Than God “Most Catholics have no problem practicing their faith...while they’re still in church. Once Mass is over, however, it gets much more challenging. In his book When Faith Causes Family Friction, Dr. Ray Guarendi addresses several of the most common difficulties that arise from living the Catholic faith at home, in the workplace, and in the real world. In a clear and succinct manner (with lots of humor thrown in), he tells us what we need to know in order to really live our faith 24/7. Highly recommended!” —Gary Zimak, speaker and author, Faith, Hope, and Clarity “Dr. Ray has done it again! His list of snappy (but charitable) answers to rude questions is worth the price of the book. But there’s so much more.” —Mike Aquilina, author, Yours Is the Church “Dr. Ray gives practical spiritual advice while answering tough questions concerning raising children in the faith. A true guidebook of responses and actions to help parents and grandparents persevere in love while maintaining and passing on truth.” —Julie Dortch Cragon, author, Amazing Graces: The Blessings of Sacramentals “Who wouldn’t benefit from a healthy dose of Dr. Ray? I needed that!” —Gina Loehr, author Saint Francis, Pope Francis “Do you get upset about faith related conflicts with your family and friends? Dr. Ray’s book is the best I’ve ever read about such problems. It is not only inspiring but also sensible and humorous. You will find surprising answers to questions you thought there were no answers for.” —Ronda Chervin, Ph.D., professor of philosophy at Holy Apostles College and Seminary “This book is down to earth, practical, funny, and a breath of fresh air. The Princess and the Pony, by Kate Beaton

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Rambunctious Princess Pinecone is the smallest warrior in her kingdom, but what she lacks in size, she makes up for in enthusiasm. Tired of receiving novelty sweaters for her birthday, Pinecone asks her parents for a big, strong battle horse—and receives a chubby little pony with a vacant expression, and incurable flatulence, instead. Though he doesn't fit the standard requirements of the typical trusty steed—"It's too small! It's too round! And I think its eyes are looking in different directions…(This was true, but only sometimes.)"—the little pony proves to be a surprising asset on the day of her great battle. Chunky, colorful digital illustrations provide plenty of detail to keep readers entertained; older children will enjoy exploring all of the different posters marking Pinecone's walls, or some of the sillier warriors in the battle fray, including one sneakily eating a hot dog. The text contains a healthy dose of alliteration and buzzwords that will boost vocabulary ("Pinecone was flabbergasted, flummoxed, floored!") while making for a fun read-aloud. VERDICT A highly recommended, charmingly illustrated tale of teamwork and tenderness.—Ashleigh Williams, School Library Journal

I loved the fact that Princess Pinecone wants to be a proper warrior, and the fact that she gets a fat, flatulent pony instead is very cute and well told. I too once coveted a gift (an EZ Bake Oven) that I didn't get, and as a knitter I can sympathize with how tired Princess Pinecone is with quirky, handmade sweaters. That both kinds of "unwanted" gifts come in handy at the climax of the great warrior contest is a good lesson for kids not to judge a gift horse in the mouth (every pun intended). My only gripe is that the female warriors are almost exclusively drawn as scantily clad warrior nymphs and that's a tired cliche. Still, I think my niece will love it, and I hope she grows to view all the crocheted and knitted gifts I send her way are made with love, and might possibly come in handy someday. You never know.

Excellent, Despite the Fart Jokes By Meganasaurus I purchased this book as a treat for when my niece comes to visit, and I'm pretty satisfied with it.I adore "Hark! A Vagrant" (Ms. Beaton's web comic) and decided that this would be a great way of showing her how much I appreciate her work. All in all, I enjoy the book (my niece hasn't come to stay, yet). The illustrations are excellent, and Princess Pinecone is a strong character, in the vein of Merida from the movie "Brave", rather than the typical 'pink princess who needs to be saved' trope. My only quibble - and this more because I fear what my sister will say if my niece tells her - is the VERY minimal "potty humor": there are a few jokes about farts. And the only reason the fart jokes bug me is because we've had a heck of a time trying to teach my niece that "potty humor" is often not appropriate. If you're okay with a couple of jokes about flatulence, though, then I HIGHLY recommend it! I can't wait to share it with my niece!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Cute and funny story and great illustrations By iiiireader This is not quite the princess story I thought I might be reading when I picked it up. It is so much better. It turns out that Princess Pinecone is a pint-sized warrior princess. Her birthday is coming up and, in the past, all she was given were cute and cuddly sweaters. To make sure this year is different, she lets everyone know that what she really wants is a warrior horse. What she gets is a cute, little round pony who has a bit of an issue with tummy gas.The story is cute and one that appeals to younger children (warrior, ponies, and gas - what's not to love?) I really love the illustrations - the messy bedroom one is one that reminds me of both of my daughters rooms when they were growing up (except theirs were even more of a mess.) I look forward to reading this book to our little ones - it is unusual to find a Princess book that will appeal as much to boys as to girls.

In Revelations, the final volume of the Alien Contact Trilogy, Dr. Jacques Vallee presents startling evidence that well-constructed hoaxes and media manipulations have misled UFO researchers, diverting them from the UFO phenomenon itself. Vallee takes readers step by step into the tangled web of UFOlogy's dark side, in an effort to clear the ever-thickening underbrush that has obscured the real nature of the UFO phenomenon.

Jacques Vallee was born in France, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the Sorbonne and a Master of Science in astrophysics from the University of Lille. He began his professional life as an astronomer at the Paris Observatory in 1961. While on the staff of the French Space Committee, he witnessed the destruction of the tracking tapes of unknown objects orbiting the earth, initiating a lifelong interest in the UFO phenomenon. Vallee arrived in the U.S. in 1962, worked in astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin, and wrote two highly respected scientific examinations arguing for the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (ETH) of UFO origins. In 1967, he received a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University, where he became a close associate of J. Allen Hynek, then scientific consultant for the U.S. Air Force on Project Blue Book. Eventually concluding that the ETH was too narrow to encompass the burgeoning UFO data, he conducted his own extensive global research, resulting in the "Alien Contact Trilogy." Dr. Vallee is presently a venture capitalist living in San Francisco. His website is www.jacquesvallee.com.

REVELATIONS: Alien Contact and Human Deception, by Jacques Vallee

From Publishers Weekly Astrophysicist Vallee's venture into parapsychology is less likely to lure or convert skeptics than did the two previous volumes ( Dimension and Confrontations ) in his trilogy. Many readers will find a strain of paranoia in the author's argument that a lot of so-called sightings of unidentified flying objects in the past 40 years are the result of "complex hoaxes . . . carefully engineered for our benefit," with witnesses the victims. These incidents, Vallee believes, have been arranged by private groups with fantastic delusions which they want to spread, or by government agencies engaged in psychological warfare. He cites instances of willing dupes taken in by bizarre tales--one contended that aliens now working here had been captured by the U.S. military; another that a subterranean community of humanoids toiled beneath the New Mexico desert. Illustrations not seen by PW. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Vallee, a respected investigator in a difficult field (he was the real-life model behind the French scientist in Steven Spielberg's film Close Encounters of the Third Kind ), here presents the final volume of his recent trilogy of reports. (The first two are Dimensions: A Casebook of Alien Contact , Contemporary Bks., 1988, and Confrontations: A Scientist's Search for Alien Contact , LJ 3/1/90.) Readers with some background in the puzzling UFO phenomenon of the last 40 years will appreciate his insights. He pulls no punches with both government obfuscation and the lunatic fringe of UFO cultists. Most valuable is his international scope. There are few answers here, but several suggestions for rational lines of research. Recommended.- Jeanne S. Bagby, formerly with Tucson P.L., Ariz.Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Bracing finale to Vallee's ``Alien Contact trilogy'' (Dimensions, 1988; Confrontations, 1990), as the ufologist brings some famous UFO cases down to earth--and into the mud. In Dimensions, Vallee presented his theory that UFOs are probably not spacecraft but manifestations of a consciousness- controlling ``technology'' from ``dimensions beyond spacetime''; in Confrontations, he bolstered that theory with examples from his own casebook. Here, deftly blending theory and memoir, he attempts to clear ufololgy of ``the weeds and the vines of human fantasy and...the poisonous flowers of unbalanced minds.'' That is, to Vallee, cases from the infamous Roswell incident (spacecraft and aliens purportedly captured by the US Army in 1947) to the popular legend of Area 51 (aliens working tentacle-in-hand with US officials beneath the Nevada desert) to the alleged abduction of Franck Fontaine in 1979 (exhaustively researched firsthand by Vallee) to the purported top-secret federal UFO-investigating committee of Howard Blum's Out There (1990) are not only mostly nonsense, but--here's the rub--``complex hoaxes that have been carefully engineered for our benefit.'' But by whom, and why? By federal disinformation agents, and possibly as ``psychological warfare experiments'' or ``as a cover for something else''--i.e., experimental spy/warcraft or real ``flying discs.'' Vallee offers little hard evidence to back those conjectures, but he does unglove the heavy hand of military intelligence in many cases, while at the same time exposing the absurdity of others, including Budd Hopkins's best-selling alien-rape reports. So what's left? A host of genuinely mysterious cases, e.g., the 1989 Soviet Union sightings, and the spirit of rigorous scientific inquiry that Vallee urges they be subjected to. Except for Vallee's wobbly conclusions, a forceful and refreshingly iconoclastic study that, for all its good sense, will likely add up to only a cry in the alien-infested ufowilderness. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Rollow Valle's finale to the UFO trilogy includes many incidents which have become household words. In the process, he shows how the unwary have frequently been made pawns in the ongoing controversy of UFOs and the holy grail of proof that so many are seeking or denying. As many have come to learn, the UFO controversy is a story that is true one day and false the next. The manipulations that go on inside the controversy are at once blatant and subtle; no "smoking gun" emerges, yet the magic show goes on. Why are so many lies used in refuting and denying this topic?Written with penetrating insight, and at times wry humor. The insitence of this author that the reader think for himself may irritate some people while delighting others. Interesting and thought-provoking light is shed on the disinformation activities of those who continue to claim that UFOs officially do not exist. This book can be read as a stand alone, or as the conclusion to the observations made in the first two books in the trilogy (Confrontations and Dimensions).

And I don't think I could have picked a better one start with. Here was a researcher who shared my reservations over the fascination with conspiracies and hypnotic regression and who openly doubted the extraterrestrial hypothesis. This book presents an unsparing view of ufology in the '90's, Bill Cooper, John Lear, Linda Moulton Howe, Bob Lazar, William Moore, and Paul Bennewitz all make appearances. The ruling obsessions of the "ufo community", MJ-12, Philadelphia Experiment, Roswell, Implants, are examined and found to be red herrings on their best days. I can't imagine the amount of rubbish I avoided by reading this book first. Thanks Dr. Vallee!

27 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Thought-provoking By Nancy A. Fox Jacques Vallee continues his fascinating studies into the realm of ufology. The terrific thing about Dr. Vallee's books, is that he doesn't claim to know "the answer". He also encourages you to use your mind and think about all the claims and truths spouted by most ufologists. While I might not agree with all of his conclusions, I appreciate the way that he presents his voluminous data and encourages you to make up your own mind. I encourage you to read this book if you're interested in the ufo phenomenon, and have read books by other authors. Dr. Vallee's unique way of studying this fascinating phenomenon is refreshing and very needed in the current climate of "final truths" about ufos.

A Year Without Mom follows 12-year-old Dasha through a year full of turmoil after her mother leaves for America. It is the early 1990s in Moscow, and political change is in the air. But Dasha is more worried about her own challenges as she negotiates family, friendships and school without her mother. Just as she begins to find her own feet, she gets word that she is to join her mother in America — a place that seems impossibly far from everything and everyone she loves. This gorgeous and subtly illustrated graphic novel signals the emergence of Dasha Tolstikova as a major new talent.

A Year Without Mom, by Dasha Tolstikova

From School Library Journal Gr 5 Up—In this fully illustrated novel, 12-year-old Dasha lives in Moscow and is unhappily surprised when her mother decides to spend a year in America, leaving her with her grandparents. Especially since her father moved to Los Angeles, she has really depended on her mom, and the absence of her actual parents is both freeing and painful as Dasha experiences the year—the same year that Gorbachev leaves and Yeltsin takes over what becomes the Russian Federation. Friends, relatives, and a crush on an oblivious boy all help Dasha cope, but what matters are the details of life in Russia. Dasha is delightfully portrayed in pencil-and-ink drawings with a gray wash. Spots of color attract the eye and provide emphasis. The accomplished drawings are loose without being fuzzy, and the slightly amateur look makes sense considering Dasha's age. Dasha is not an angel, nor is she particularly badly behaved. Her parents seem loving but engrossed in their own lives. The interplay of drawings and text sometimes highlights an emotion and at other times conveys a conversation or mood, keeping the pages turning quickly with each scene. VERDICT A lovely portrayal in words and art of a year in the life of an engaging tween girl from the other side of the world.—Carol A. Edwards, Formerly at Denver Public Library, CO

Highly recommended illustrated memoir By Julie Falatko A Year Without Mom is absolute perfection.Every word, so carefully chosen, is like having Dasha Tolstikova sit across from you, telling her story, holding your hand, cutting deep into your heart. In the best way, I mean. The text is extraordinary, crafted in a way that conveys the emotional depth of the story right to your soul. You feel everything 12-year-old Dasha feels. This is no easy feat: To be able to write such an accessible story that carries such huge big emotion. The illustrations carry the text perfectly. Tolstikova's style captures Moscow and adolescence like no one else's ever could. Amazingly perfect.Let's talk about pacing. You could teach a class on the pacing and page turns and white space in this book. It's part of what makes it seem like Tolstikova herself is telling the story into your ear, and is a master class in how to vary the speed of a story, and when, and why. The pacing carries you through, tells you when to speed up and when to slow down, takes your hand on this ride. Brilliant.I will not be the first person to say this, but: the genius thing about A Year Without Mom is that the trials 12-year-old Dasha goes through are common, and ones that we all can relate to. Friendships, crushes, family, trying to find our way, and going through life from places where you feel content and places where you do not. What makes this book extraordinary, and extraordinarily interesting, is the history and the setting.Astoundingly excellent. Highly highly HIGHLY recommended, for everyone who likes books.

Familiar tween feelings from a different place and time By Janet Hamilton Summary: 12-year-old Dasha is crushed when she learns that her mother is spending a year at the University of Illinois, leaving Dasha with her grandparents in the Soviet Union. Her father is living in Los Angeles, so Dasha feels lonely, although her grandparents are loving and she has two best friends. During the year, she goes through some friendship difficulties, develops an unrequited crush on an older boy, and works hard to get into a better school. Meanwhile, political unrest results in a few anxious days as Boris Yeltsin replaces Mikhail Gorbachev as the Soviet leader. Things are beginning to fall into place by the spring, when her mother returns, announcing that Dasha will be joining her for the second year of her master’s program. The book ends on an uncertain note, as Dasha arrives in Urbana, Illinois, and meets a girl who just might be a new friend. 168 pages; grades 5-8.Pros: Even though she is from a different place and time, Dasha’s feelings will be familiar to 21st century American tweens. A cross between a graphic novel and an illustrated chapter book, A Year Without Mom will appeal to both reluctant and avid middle school readers.

Hat Trick Steven and I went sailing across the screen of Zoe’s laptop, swaying to the music. “Oooooooooooh, Devin,” Jessi said, and poked me in the ribs. “Oooooooooooh, Jessi,” I teased back, pointing at the computer screen as Jessi and Cody came dancing into the camera’s view. Jessi and I were huddled together with Zoe and Emma on Zoe’s bed, watching the video from Zoe’s bat mitzvah the week before. “Oh my gosh!” Emma shrieked. “I think it’s gonna happen now!” All of our eyes widened as we watched the screen, waiting for the moment that we hadn’t been able to stop talking about all week. Jessi and Cody glided among the other dancers, steps away from me and Steven. It was a slow song, and just as it ended, the deejay immediately launched into a fast-paced number by Brady McCoy, a new pop star who had a hit song called “Believe in Me.” As the song started, shrieking filled the air, and Emma burst through the dancers. “This is my jam!” she yelled in the video as she jumped excitedly to the middle of the dance floor. But instead of stopping, she lost her balance. “Whoa!” she yelled, her long, shimmering emerald-green party dress tangling up around her legs. Emma waved her arms wildly in the air for a moment, but nothing could stop her from falling. She toppled over, knocking into Jessi and Cody, who in turn bumped into me and Steven, and we all ended up in a big pile on the floor. Zoe and Frida came running into the frame. “We’ll save you!” Frida cried. But just as they reached us, Jessi and Steven untangled themselves and got to their feet, colliding with the rushing Zoe and Frida. Jessi and Steven went down again, this time with Zoe and Frida toppling too. Lying on the bed, we all shrieked with laughter as we watched ourselves flopping around on the dance floor. In the video, Zoe was laughing so hard she had tears running down her face. We were all hysterical and went into even harder peals of laughter when Zoe’s mom and my mom came up to us on the video, concerned. They tried to help us up, but we were laughing so hard, we couldn’t move. “That was so awesome!” Zoe said as we watched ourselves carrying on. “It’s one of those perfect party moments you can’t plan.” “Perfect party moment?” Emma asked in disbelief. “I thought I had ruined your perfect day!” Zoe shook her head. “No way. Those are the memories I’ll never forget. And I’ll always start laughing when I think about the dance floor pileup!” My own smile turned to a frown. “I wish Frida could be here with us to see it now. She would have loved it. The drama!” “I wonder what’s going on with Frida,” said Jessi. Frida was our actor friend and soccer teammate on the Kentville Kangaroos. We called ourselves the Kicks, and we had just finished a pretty good season of soccer. We all shrugged. Frida could be dramatic, and she had sent a mysterious text this Saturday morning, right before we were all supposed to meet at Zoe’s house. It read: Sorry, but something big is happening. I can’t make it today. And I can’t say why—yet. We’ll talk soon. “You know Frida,” Emma said, smiling. “Maybe aliens ate her homework or she had to save the world from an army of evil wizards.” Frida had started out as a nervous soccer player, until she’d figured out that if she pretended to be someone else on the field, it helped her to calm down and focus. We all helped by coming up with ideas for her. It was always a lot of fun to try to think of different parts for Frida to play. “At least something exciting is happening,” Jessi complained. “With the fall soccer season over and all the planning for Zoe’s bat mitzvah finished, I’ve had too much free time on my hands. I’ve been so bored. I’ve even been looking forward to doing my homework every night.” “That is serious,” I deadpanned, as Emma and Zoe burst out laughing. At one point Jessi had avoided doing her homework so much that her grades had gone down, almost getting her kicked off the Kicks! She’d turned it around and had gotten her grades way up, but we had never heard her say she looked forward to homework before. Jessi laughed along with them. “It’s true.” “I get it,” I said. “I’ve been in serious soccer withdrawal myself.” The Kicks had made it to the first game in the state championship tournament but had lost. We had come so close. I kept going over the game in my head, knowing I could have done things better. I was itching to get back onto a soccer field to put what I had learned to use. But it was only November, and the Kicks wouldn’t play together as a team again until February, when practice would start back up. Suddenly Jessi leaped off the bed. “I’m such an idiot!” she yelled, startling us all. “What are you talking about?” Zoe asked, her eyes wide. “The winter soccer league,” Jessi said, the words coming out in a rush. “I totally forgot. And the tryouts are coming up soon. Maybe we missed them!” “Wait. What?” I asked, my excitement growing. “There’s a soccer team we can play on until the Kicks are back together?” Jessi reached for Zoe’s laptop. “Can I?” she asked, and Zoe nodded and handed it over. Jessi began typing furiously. “You know, Devin, when you first got here, the Kicks were in bad shape. It was just for fun to play on the soccer team. I never thought about playing it seriously, which is why I never really considered the winter league. But now everything has changed!” Jessi squinted at the computer screen. “Got it!” She clicked, and a screen came up for the Gilmore County U14 League. “Tryouts are this Monday! We haven’t missed them.” “Jessi, that’s awesome!” I leaped off the bed and hugged her. We began jumping around the room together. “I’m in too.” Zoe jumped up and joined us. “And me too!” Emma sailed off the bed and collided into us like a bowling ball knocking over pins. Once again we were a pile of people on the floor. After we all managed to stop laughing and get untangled, we sat back on Zoe’s bed. “So Maisie won’t be the only one in the family playing soccer this winter,” I told them. “She joined her elementary school’s program. Her practices start next week.” “Oh, how cute!” Emma said. “Little tiny soccer players.” I rolled my eyes. Sometimes my little sister, Maisie, could be adorable, but mostly she was just annoying. Although, I had to admit she did have some soccer skills. I had kicked around the ball in the backyard with her the other day, and she’d showed the potential for some pretty good footwork. Now I heard a car horn toot outside. I looked at the clock. “That must be my mom,” I said. “Gotta go!” When I walked outside, I smiled as I saw our family’s familiar white van. It had traveled with us when we’d moved from Connecticut to California this past summer. Maisie called it the Marshmallow. As I climbed inside, my phone beeped, letting me know I had a text message. I figured it was Jessi, all excited about the travel team. But instead it was a text from Frida sent to all of us. BIG NEWS! it said, followed by a bunch of emoticons of firecrackers, smiley faces, and clapping hands. We need to video chat ASAP! Wow! I wondered what was going on. Before I could even tell my mom about Frida’s text or the winter soccer league, Maisie let out a wail from the backseat. “Bad news!” she yelled before bursting into tears.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. okay, fine, #13 is now also my lucky number By H. Bala Where does Alex Morgan find the time? Anyway, Hat Trick is fourth in her utterly charming middle grade series about The Kicks, nickname of the Kentville Kangaroos soccer team. Months after her family's big move from Connecticut to California, 12-year-old Devin Burke has fully embraced the Cali life. But here's the rub: With the Kicks elimated from the playoffs, soccer season is officially over for Devin and her friends until next spring. That is, until the girls realize that they could sign up for the local winter league. But what happens when Devin and her besties are assigned to different teams? And what's up with Devin's super-strict new coach placing a premium on rough, aggressive, borderline dirty play? The "hat trick" title refers to the three goals that Devin sets out to achieve. And, oboy, she'll need all her talent for problem solving. Can she find a way to bring teamwork to her new, standoffish teammates, the Griffons? How can she make sure that her and her friends' diverging interests and activities don't fracture their friendship? And, lastly, can she figure out a way to resurrect her little sister Maisie's elementary school soccer program which had been cut due to lack of funding? So, I'm the furthest thing from a middle grader, but I really enjoyed The Kicks books, having ripped thru them in two days. And Hat Trick is another swell read. I like what Devin's all about: dedication, teamwork, perseverance, and good sportsmanship. She's such an inspiring leader. I like that she's industrious about making time to maintain her long-distance friendship with Kara, who was her best friend in Connecticut. Even though Devin faces an abundance of obstacles, the writing generates a really positive vibe, and it's mostly because Devin herself is such a positive person. I love how her parents are so supportive, and big ups to Devin's dad for how he constructively resets Devin on the right path when she acts up that one time. The problems - on and off the field - that Morgan introduces in her story are those that young athletes face in real life. She handles the girl drama with finesse. The cool thing about this is that Alex Morgan went thru these same exact experiences, so there's no lacking of credibility there. I kept sniffing around for a ghost writer, but I guess Morgan really is the culprit. She writes in a really entertaining and natural style that just keeps you turning pages. I love the values that she imparts. I love that she's got the storytelling skills to impart them. And since she's a celebrity author (congrats on the FIFA world cup win, you guys!), the hope is she can reach out to a ton of young readers. Me, I'd already pre-ordered her fifth Kicks book (Shaken Up, coming out in September, 2015).And if you're all caught up with the books, you should know that Amazon Studios has greenlit a pilot for The Kicks, and fingers crossed that it gets picked up for an ongoing online series. You should check out the pilot. It's neat, and, like the books, chock full of fun soccer action.

I think it would appeal to most any child, and would get them wondering what it would be like if they themselves lived at the White House. I sent an email to the author because I had a question about something in the book, and Mr. Rhatigan responded immediately. I look forward to reading other works by Mr. Rhatigan.

Flat Stanley traveled by being a flat drawing, so he could visit more places economically. In this class, however, they made Flat ____ (fill in the child's name). Since I was in DC and live in that area, I wanted to send a book so she'd learn more about DC as well. She was so happy with the books.

Living in the Spotlight By KarenRachel Engaging, fun and informative, White House Kids is about the children who have lived in the White House while their fathers were President. Targeted towards middle school children I think kids and adults alike can enjoy this fact-filled book of the amazing and the ordinary world of children being children in the hotbed of Washington. The book asks a very direct question: Would you like to grow up in the White House? and from there invites us in to explore what it might be like. We learn about the animals, the playground, the parties, what is is like to go to school, to church, make friends. etc. We see how different children handle the pressures of having to be "good" to be "on" all the time, i.e Amy Carter despised it and how each family tried to shield their children from the spotlight. All in all a good and enjoyable read.Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to review this book for an honest opinion.

It’s the Noah’s Ark story like you’ve never seen it before with bold, colorful cut-outs of the noisy animals on the ark.

From the time they first begin to speak, young children love making and identifying animal sounds. And there’s no better story that captures God’s creatures more than Noah’s Ark! Children will be led to tell Mom and Dad about each animal’s sound, an engaging activity that kids love to do. And this “fit-together” board book features bold, colorful cut-outs on each spread that showcase the animals on the ark in a fun, dynamic way. The cut-outs for each spread “fit” together when the book is closed, creating a fun surprise for kids on every page.

This unique board book would be a wonderful gift for birthdays, baby showers, or anytime!

Campbell I think this book is so cute and love how the board book fits together and how it is designed to be so interactive. It is age appropriate. But this board book has 10% to do with the actual story of Noah and the ark. I know babies can't grasp God's wrath, judgment, and mercy - but put something in there. Anyway...most kids including mine will love the book and the parents can go deeper with older children.

Some of her favorite books have animals in them. She loves to point at the animals and I make the sounds for her...and I know wont be long until she will be able to make the noises herself. I am always on the look out for engaging books with a Biblical theme, and this one is wonderful! Noah's Noisy Zoo. Each page is illustrated with colorful animals that were on the ark and the sounds that they make. And the pages don't just have pictures, this is a “fit-together” board book. It's our first fit-together book and my 10 month old just loves touch the colorful animal cut-outs on each page. She can be a bit rough with the books - so sturdy board books are a must at the moment! And this book has stood up well to her 'reading' it!I received this book for free in exchange for my review. These are my own true opinions.

The shapes of some of the animals are cut into the page and others protrude out, which is why they call it a feel-and-fit shapes book. These are fun for babies and toddlers to touch, giving them a more sensory experience with the book. The “story” is of the animals who are coming to Noah’s ark: monkeys, owls, snakes, bears, birds, dogs, lions, and frogs. The only thing I don’t like about the book is the last page which shows a teeny-weeny ark, which is quite opposite of the true size and helps promote the belief to people today that Noah’s ark wasn’t real.(Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to write this honest review.)

“Of Mary, there is never enough!” Books about the Blessed Virgin abound, yet the words of St. Bernard of Clairvaux still ring true: “Of Mary, there is never enough!” She is a mystery that faithful Christians seek to understand more fully, an ocean “full of grace” still awaiting deeper exploration. In A Year with Mary: Daily Meditations on the Mother of God, best-selling Catholic author Paul Thigpen sets sail on that ocean, using as his map the profound insights of saints and other spiritual writers. These 365 reflections, drawn from their writings, reveal Mary’s role in God’s plan, the virtues she so perfectly models, and the rich benefits of Marian devotion.

Not a daily devotional guy, but if I was this would be the one I'd get By Stuart Dunn A Year with Mary: Daily Meditations on the Mother of God is the fifth and latest daily devotional available from Saint Benedict Press. The other four are A Year with the Bible, A Year with the Saints, A Year with the Angels, and A Year with the Church Fathers. Like the other volumes in this series, this book has gilded pages and is Premium UltraSoft leather, making it perfect for presentation or gifting. The book itself is blue, which is fitting as that is the color we most associate with Mary. Despite the impressiveness of this book, I was a little skeptical to review this book. I personally am not a fan of the daily devotional, which is strange even to me seeing that I came from a Protestant background. However, I decided to give it a shot. The first thing that I noticed about this book is the numbering of the devotions. Most daily devotionals give you a specific date, i.e., January 1. This book instead labels the devotions as Day 1, Day 2, etc. This means that you don't have to wait until January 1 to start this book, which is the fatal flaw of daily devotionals. Also, in case you are wondering, there is a ribbon bookmark, so you won't have to remember which day you are on. The next thing I noticed about this book was that St. Louis de Montfort and St. Alphonsus Liguori were the bulk of the readings. Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with this. They wrote two of the best books on Mary with de Montfort pinning "True Devotion to Mary," and Liguori "The Glories of Mary." I was just expecting a little more variety in reading selections. The last thing that I noticed was the brief section at the end of every day entitled, "In God's Presence Consider." This makes the devotional more than just something to do everyday, but something which you need to ponder, study, and mediate on. Each day then ends with a closing prayer.Overall, this is an impressive book in both presentation and content. The devotions are each one page long, making them just short enough that you don't feel overwhelmed and just long enough that it requires you to put forth a bit of effort in your journey with and toward God. It didn't turn me into a devotional fan, but it did provide me with some sources and texts on Mary to read that I had not heard of before. For example, St. John of Eudes' work "The Admirable Heart of Mary" is a work that I now want to read after the excerpt I read in this book. So whether you are a Mary novice or an expert on Mary, there is enough wisdom in this book that will enrich your life every time you read it.

Easy, simple-to-read/understand daily devotionals. Gorgeous feel - the leather cover & the slick (but not too slick), gold trimmed pages. I'd rate this a 5-star if it wasn't for the typo on the bottom of EVERY page. Instead of listing the actual book's title (A Year With Mary), every page lists the title of another book in this series (A Year With The Saints - also by Thigpen). Makes me feel like I ordered a knock-off...like the printer made a typo & Amazon bought them at a discount in order to pass along a cheaper price. Now I wish I would have bought this book at our local Catholic Bookstore.

This book has the promise of becoming a family heirloom. The meditations are prayerful and thought provoking. In a world where time for devotions is at a premium, each page allows for concentrated reflection on Mary.
