The Basman-Sale Variation is a relatively unexplored weapon for Black in the Sicilian Defence. After the perfectly normal moves 1.e4 c5, 2. Nf3 e6, 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Black lashes out with 4…Bc5! English IM Michael Basman and Croatian IM Srdjan Sale were the pioneers of this cunning chess opening system. The advantages are clear: it is surprising, aggressive and easy to learn. Compared to the complexity of mainstream Sicilian variations it requires little theoretical preparation, while you don't run excessive risks. That is why The Lazy Man's Sicilian is ideal for club players who don't have much time to study opening theory (or are not too fond of hard work anyway). This easily accessible and up-to-date book offers everything you need to get started with the Basman-Sale Variation. In well-organized chapters it describes the history and underlying ideas of the variation and explains the pawn-structures, the strategies and the tactical themes. What's more, if you play the Basman-Sale system, there is plenty of room for your own creativity as well!

The Lazy Man's Sicilian: Attack and Surprise White, by Valeri Bronznik, Steve Giddins

Review "The variation retains surprise effect and remains playable to this day, with this work explaining both the theory and the key ideas behind Black's approach." (CHESS Magazine)"A very good book which offers a relatively simple Sicilian system." (Dirk Schuh, International Master)"The funnily-named Basman-Sale variation is prospering. It has lost its place among rare variations in which Black scores 50 percent, but the variation is a live and kicking. When I wrote my first Survey in Yearbook 73 (2004), there were 424 games in MegaBase 2004, with Black scoring a respectable 50 percent. Today, MegaBase 2015 has 1581 games and Black's score is 46 percent." (Srdjan Sale, International Master, Yearbook 117)"Well represented and neatly organized, with a good balance between prose and variations." (Carsten Hansen ChessCafe.com)"Of course, no opening is quite as easy to learn as the publicity might suggest because there are transpositions and critical lines just like any other line. However, if you stick with 4...Bc5 then the long-term experience will certainly help you to handle the positions better than White who might only rarely come across the variation. Nowadays, anybody with computer software is a critic so there has been a suggestion on chess forums that the line: 5 Be3 Qb6 is refuted by 6 b4. The short answer is no and the long answer is that after 6...Bxb4+ 7 c3 Be7 the chances are roughly equal. A book full of inspirational ideas for players who wish to play something a bit different." (Gary Lane, International Master British Chess Magazine)"The Lazy Man's Sicilian is fun and offers lots of original positions." (Jeremy Silman, International Master, author of "How to Reasses Your Chess")"On a lazy day I am certainly going to try this." (Florian Jacobs Max Euwe Center, Amsterdam)"A good way to understand an opening and surprise future opponents." (Chess Moves Magazine)"I can highly recommend this original and diligently-researched book to everyone." (John Watson, author of Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy The Week in Chess, on the original German edition)"A must-have opening book." (Elburg Chess Reviews)"The writing style is a nice combination of strategy, sensible clear logic and a touch of humor (...) The new edition does contain a fair proportion of recent developments and Giddins has added in home analysis to bolster his case." (Glenn Flear, Grand Master, author of "Starting Out: Open Games")

Review Praise for Ranger in Time: Rescue on the Oregon Trail"This excellent story contains historical details, full-page illustrations, and enough action to keep even reluctant readers engaged." -- School Library Journal"The third-person narration expertly balances Ranger's thoughts between the appropriately doglike (squirrels! bacon!) and the heroic (Ranger's drive to find and protect)." -- Kirkus Reviews"McMorris's richly rendered illustrations heighten the plot's many moments of danger and drama, and Messner incorporates a wealth of historical details into her rousing adventure story." -- Publishers Weekly

By Heidi Grange Messner has created an enjoyable early chapter book series that combines the adventures of a dog with history. What a fun way to encourage children to learn more about the past. In this volume of the series, Ranger ends up in the Colosseum in Ancient Rome where young Marcus works as a slave for a gladiator school. When Marcus gets attacked by a lion, Ranger races to the rescue along with a recently recruited gladiator named Quintus. Quintus doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a gladiator but Marcus does what he can to help. Ranger, a trained search and rescue dog helps Marcus find Quintus when he runs away. But can Ranger save the day again when Quintus ends up in the arena fighting the most experienced gladiator from the school after only a few days of training? The story moves quickly which is bound to help young readers finish the book quickly. The illustrations are a nice touch as well giving the reader a glimpse into a very different world. The authors notes at the end I thoroughly enjoyed as Messner gives the reader a look into her research process and what she learned about Ancient Rome. A fun series for young readers.

Good choice for readers ready to move on from the Magic Tree House By Janet Hamilton Summary: Golden retriever Ranger is back for his second time-traveling adventure, this time to Ancient Rome. He meets Marcus, a slave boy who works for a gladiator trainer, and Quintus, a new gladiator who is afraid he’s made the wrong decision. Ranger, whose search-and-rescue career was cut short because of his inability to resist squirrels, is able to use his finding abilities in a number of adventures, including a fire, Quintus’s disappearance, and the final brutal fight in the Coliseum. Despite the odds being stacked against them, a Marcus and Quintus find satisfying happy ending, and Ranger is able to go back to his family in the present. Grades 2-4.Pros: Readers ready to move on from the Magic Tree House will enjoy this time-traveling adventure that features a lovable dog.Cons: Life was pretty tough there in ancient Rome. There are a few harrowing references to the public executions the precede the gladiator fights.

A New York Times Bestseller

Fans of The Magician's Elephant, Savvy, and Roald Dahl will fall in love with Circus Mirandus, which celebrates the power of seeing magic in the world. Do you believe in magic? Micah Tuttle does. Even though his awful Great-Aunt Gertrudis doesn’t approve, Micah believes in the stories his dying Grandpa Ephraim tells him of the magical Circus Mirandus: the invisible tiger guarding the gates, the beautiful flying birdwoman, and the magician more powerful than any other—the Man Who Bends Light. Finally, Grandpa Ephraim offers proof. The Circus is real. And the Lightbender owes Ephraim a miracle. With his friend Jenny Mendoza in tow, Micah sets out to find the Circus and the man he believes will save his grandfather. The only problem is, the Lightbender doesn't want to keep his promise. And now it's up to Micah to get the miracle he came for.

Circus Mirandus, by Cassie Beasley

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Fifth-grader Micah Tuttle has been living with his Grandpa Ephraim since his parents died when he was very young. The two are close; Grandpa Ephraim teaches Micah how to tie complicated knots and tells him fanciful tales about the magical Circus Mirandus and its many performers, including a powerful illusionist called the Lightbender. When Grandpa Ephraim becomes gravely ill, his sister, the strict and dour Aunt Gertrudis, comes to take care of the household. She severely limits Micah's time with his sick grandfather, and the boy is distraught at the idea of losing the only important person in his life. In a stolen moment, Grandpa Ephraim surprises Micah by revealing that the Circus Mirandus is real, and that the Lightbender promised him a miracle when he was a child. The protagonist begins to hope that his grandfather will get well. The Circus Mirandus arrives in town on the wind, and Micah, with the help of his classmate Jenny Mendoza, seeks out the Lightbender and tries to retrieve the miracle that Grandpa Ephraim has requested. During a whirlwind adventure in the Circus, Micah learns about his family and discovers that the miracle that Grandpa Ephraim asked for might not be the one that Micah had in mind. Circus Mirandus is not a simple story, but readers will be rewarded for delving into its intricacies. VERDICT This gripping fantasy tale will have readers hooked from the opening scene to the breathtaking—and unexpected—conclusion.—Sarah Reid, Broome County Public Library, Binghamton, NY

I wasn't sure what to expect when picking it up but it took me to the same place “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “James and the Giant Peach” did when I was a child.Micah Tuttle is the grandson of Ephraim Tuttle. Micah has spent all of his ten years hearing his Grandpa Ephraim's wonderful and magical stories of Circus Mirandus and thought that that was exactly what they were: stories. Grandpa Ephraim is now very ill, indeed, and reveals to Micah that the stories were all true. Not only that, but that when Ephraim visited the Circus many years ago, the Lightbender promised him a miracle and that he has called for that miracle to be honored.Micah and his friend, Jenny Mendoza, battle to get his Grandpa his miracle. They have some wonderful adventures and become good friends along the way. I loved the point and counter-point of these two characters – one who believes in magic and one who believes in science. As I mentioned, it reminds me of some of Roald Dahl's works. These books were read aloud to my class when I was eight years old. I think that “Circus Mirandus” is a wonderful book for parents to read to their like aged children – chapter by chapter each night at bedtime. I always let my children stay up a half hour past bedtime as long as they spent it reading or being read to – really created a love of reading in all of them.An older child, or a precious younger child would be able to read the book by themselves. However, I would make myself available to young children for their questions as there are some serious subjects dealt with in this story (illness, abandonment, cruelty) that a parent would probably want to explain to their child. This is a story that would lend itself fantastically to becoming a film. The author has given the story depth and color with her wonderful descriptions throughout. I could “see” the Amazonian Bird Woman, the Lightbender, the Menagerie, Rosebud, and everyone else.Additionally, I am sincerely hoping that this book is the first in a series. There are questions unanswered. There are adventures to be had. There are places to be seen and people to meet. I certainly hope to see Micah, Jenny, and the Man Who Bends Light (and maybe even Chintzy – who am I kidding, definitely Chintzy) again in the future.I absolutely loved the book. I was given an Advance Reading Copy which did not contain the final illustrations, so I can't speak for those. I so enjoyed the book, I will purchase copies for my grandchildren of the final copy. I'm sure that the illustrations will add greatly to an already fantastic book. It is a book that I recommend for both boys and girls of all ages.

Micah, the little boy who is the main character is being raised by his grandfather, whom he deeply and sincerely loves. His grandfather tells him about Circus Mirandus, which he hasn't been to since he was a boy. Now Micah wants to go to this circus. But not just because it is a circus, but because it is a special circus for a special reason: Grandpa still has a miracle that he hasn't "cashed in" on yet. I will not tell you what the miracle is, because I don't want to ruin the book for you. But you will find out if you read the book.Micah desperately wants to go to Circus Mirandus. He is determined, but he has a thorn in his side trying to keep him from not only going to the circus, but from not believing in magic: his mean great aunt.I enjoyed this book, especially the part about actually being at the circus, as I love carnivals. I also loved the fact that they were trying to let Micah know the difference between reality and fantasy (magic). There was fun, but yet they were practical and realistic.I'm not a fantasy person (I know, that is probably the most or one of the most popular genres of today, and everybody loves it), but I do love fairs and carnivals. I don't know if this book would actually be considered "fantasy". But I do know that the part about the circus was fun.Well written and fun book.

CIRCUS MIRANDUS casts a nice spell on middle school readers By Maggie Knapp This fun book is not so magical it’s not realistic, and not so realistic it isn’t magical. Micah’s beloved grandfather's life is slowly winding down, and his Great Aunt Gertrudis doesn’t much care. She has no consideration for the special friendship that Grandpg Ephriam and Micah share, so Micah takes it upon himself (with the help of spunky smart neighbor girl Jenny Mendoza) to locate The Lightbender. From his grandfather's fantastic tales of life with the Circus Mirandus, it appears The Lightbender may owe grandpa a life-saving favor.Take a cup of Harry Potter, mix with a little Ransom Riggs (MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN) and stir together with some lovely writing all its own. Add several quirky characters with a few that are more one-dimensional (Aunt Getrudis is pretty much one-note) and I fthink you have a book worth reading. I think CIRCUS MIRANDUS will be enjoyed most by those who already like to read, but in my experience those reading types need a new book every week (if not every few days) – and this is a good one.About me: I’m a middle school/high school librarianHow I got this book: review copy from the publisher

The adorable pug and the rhythm of the story will certainly keep very young readers engaged. The little curly tailed dog never loses that trademark pug smile and young readers will smile as well as their reading soars and they are treated to pictures of an adorable curly tailed dog.

Our daughter loves this book. It is printed on incredibly flimsy paper and easily gets ripped, torn, and crinkled - especially with a child and dog around, but the book itself is cute.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Serves its purpose! By J. Caritas This is a book for early readers, rather than a book to read to your child. As other reviewers have said, there's no story and the language isn't particularly entertaining. It would be more fair and accurate to compare it to the BOB books, than, say, Dr. Seuss -- and by that yardstick it's quite good.My daughter (age 5.5) is a new reader. She went through most of the BOB books, but when the last set rather abruptly began to put more and longer sentences on each page she became intimidated (it might not have had more text per page than this book, but the books are much smaller, so it looked like a lot!). She also responds strongly to color, and the BOB books are devoid of it. Pug's Hugs was an instant favorite with her -- a manageable one or two sentences per page, short, rule-abiding words with a few more challenging ones thrown in, and fun, colorful pictures. For her level, it's perfect.

PROPHECY THIRTEEN God’s Middle East Solution – And Beyond PROPHECY THIRTEEN God’s Middle East Solution – And Beyond An event of biblical proportion is coming. In the book of Mark 13:23, God tells us, “But take heed; behold I have told you everything in advance.” Psalm 83, and Ezekiel 38:1 through 39:16, foretell how God Himself will soon resolve the world’s current Middle East upheaval, miraculously and without mankind’s help, providing an incredible victory for Israel. God explains in His Word how a coalition of Israel’s neighboring enemies (led by Russia) become emboldened, believing they can militarily rid the world of Israel. They will abruptly discover the outcome will not be as expected. This monumental event is PROPHECY THIRTEEN; designed by God to alter the course of human history. Please do not dismiss this proclamation out of hand, I provide compelling biblical support for this analysis. All “incredibly good news” for Christians who understand what the Lord is telling us. I have two humble requests: The first request is to please review the Table of Contents, on page 3, along with God’s Road Map on pages 33-34, which is an outline of twenty-four precise biblical prophecies or “signs” related to understanding God’s plans for our current days. Since 1914, the Lord’s initial twelve prophecies have reached fulfillment. His final twelve prophecies must soon be realized for us to witness, as well. By God allowing us to see all these visible “signs,” it will become apparent that the manmade Doctrine of the Lord’s “imminent” return is incorrect. God is showing us that His return is in no way intended to be in secret. The second request is to please read pages 102-131 of Chapter three, which explain Prophecy Thirteen in detail. For one hundred and two years, Jesus has been clearly announcing to the world that He is about to return in a spectacular way. Thank you for prayerfully considering my two requests. I believe you will discover we are living during the most amazing time in all of world history. What “wonderful blessings” are being bestowed upon us by God who is allowing believers to be witnesses of His Divine handiwork in these last days! Christians have nothing to fear; God truly loves us as written in 1 John 4:16-18.PROPHECY THIRTEEN God’s Middle East Solution – And Beyond In the love of Christ, Rick A. Blomgren, AIA Author

Prophecy Thirteen: Will Amaze Mankind Starting God's Countdown to a Visual Rapture, by Rick A Blomgren

About the Author Rick Blomgren was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1954. During his college years an interest in end time prophecies (Eschatology) took shape. For over forty-years he has studied and researched multiple end time prophetic theories in an effort to define what God has shared with us in His Word. Ten years ago, Rick met Dr. F. Kenton (Doc) Beshore, the President of the World Bible Society, in Costa Mesa, California. He began study work with Dr. Beshore, attending his three-hundred person Bible study class on Sunday mornings. Study with this, sagacious, scholar expanded to one afternoon a week in his office, where together they explored God’s prophecies in greater depth on a more personal level. Quickly, Rick experienced Bible prophecy transform from black-and-white into Technicolor. Rick’s teacher, Doc, holds five doctoral degrees in theology. Additionally, Doc has published multiple books regarding end time prophecies. He has taught in multiple Seminaries and pastored in many churches across the nation. He honed and refined his skills under the tutelage of Dr. David L. Cooper (1886-1965). Dr. Cooper was a leading expert in Biblical prophecy during the first half of the twentieth century. Doc Beshore was one of Dr. Cooper’s Timothys, from 1955 to 1965. Dr. Cooper developed the Golden Rule for Biblical Interpretation: “When the plain sense of scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense; therefore, take every word at its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context, studied in the light of related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths indicate clearly otherwise.” Through prayer and plain, literal “common sense” Bible interpretation, Rick developed a yearning to share with others about what is happening, in the world, explaining how today’s current events purposefully validate God’s Biblical prognostications for mankind’s final days. For this reason, the book, Prophecy Thirteen, came to be. Rick is an award-winning Architect, and a member of the American Institute of Architects. He has been in private practice for thirty years and is licensed in multiple states. Rick has been married to his wife Jana for twenty-four years, and resides in Southern California.

By E Tallent Prophecy Thirteen is a well-written, painstakingly researched book on Bible end-times prophecy, but with some new insights. The Prophesy Thirteen event will shake the world to its core. This event, along with the prophesied events which will occur shortly thereafter, will force each individual to make his or her eternal decision to be either for or against Jesus Christ. The book of Revelation, along with prophecies from other books from both the Old and New Testaments, are explained in great detail. All the writer’s theories, including his belief in the visual rapture of the church, are well-referenced and explained. The appendices contain concise information for believers to use to evangelize, and contain a wealth of information for nonbelievers who are searching for the truth about our Lord Jesus Christ. I see no reason to think that events may not unfold as Rick Blomgren has written. An excellent, scholarly read!

Amos 3;7 says "Surely the Lord Jehovah will do nothing, except He reveal His secret unto His servants the prophets." Rick, I believe, understands the prophets and lays out currant and future, secret, events in the correct Biblical order. This book will hopefully convince unbelievers to believe and believers to grow from a truthful account of the Biblical narrative, Rick shows Gods hand in the process of ruling the universe and weaving all events into the Messianic Kingdom of God for 1000 years. A must read in the times were living in!

"Tell the story to its end," says Eren with a grin. His yellow eyes are glowing like embers in the night."When I reach the end," I say, "what happens? You'll have the whole story.""Hmm," he says, looking at me and licking his lips with a dry, grey tongue. "What happens then? Why don't we find out?"

People are keeping secrets from Oli. His mum has brought him to stay with his aunt and uncle in the countryside, but nobody will tell him why his dad isn't there, too. Why hasn't he come with them? Has something happened? Why won't anyone talk about it? Oli has a hundred questions, and only an old, empty house in the middle of an ancient forest for answers. But then he finds a secret of his own: there is a creature that lives in the attic...

Eren is not human.Eren is hungry for stories.Eren has been waiting for him.

With Eren to listen, Oli starts to make sense of what's happening. But Eren is powerful, and though he's willing to help Oli, he's not willing to do it for free; he wants something in return. Oli must make a choice: he can learn the truth -- but to do so he must abandon himself to Eren's world, forever.

From striking new voice Simon P. Clark comes Tell the Story to Its End; richly atmospheric, moving, unsettling, and told in gorgeous prose, it is a modern classic in the making.

-----

“Sure-footed, distinctive, strange, poetic. Simon P. Clark is a truly interesting new voice.”―David Almond, award-winning author of Skellig

“Unflinchingly dark and unforgettably creepy, Tell the Story to Its End will have you in its grip.”―Anne Ursu, award-winning author of The Real Boy and The Shadow Thieves

“Offering a spiral of stories within stories, this atmospheric first novel features a boy searching for truth, who gets sidetracked by a remarkable discovery. Echoing the surreal quality and settings of David Almond’s books, this novel adeptly mixes fantasy with reality and leaves some pressing questions unanswered.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Debut British-American author Clark creates a tale with mythic largesse…The book explores the relationship between truth and fiction, the essence of story, and the urgency of putting dreams and experiences into words ‘to fire imaginations and break worlds.’ Savvy readers and would-be writers will love this exploration of story as an art form, a panacea, and an endless part of life.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“The magical realism and storytelling details will draw fantasy readers, who will find meaty substance and enough Britishisms to lend flavor. While the conclusion is entirely logical, it’s unexpected and will spark discussion, challenging readers to reflect on the nature of both stories and reality.” ―Booklist

“Eren has echoes of A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness or Skellig by David Almond. It’s dark, poetic and feels as ancient as stories themselves.”―Readings.com

“This is skillful storytelling; the kind that feels destined to become a classic.”―Katelliswrites.com

“Incredibly dark and delicious.”―Diva Book Nerd

“One of those books that you really have to read…The story was so beautifully written that it throws you into the borders of reality and fantasy.”―Sporadic Reads

Tell the Story to Its End: A Novel, by Simon P. Clark

Review Eren caught my attention from the very first page. I really enjoyed it. Sure-footed, distinctive, strange, poetic. Simon P. Clark is a truly interesting new voice. -- David Almond, author of Skellig This is a beautiful, illustrated short fables about the power of stories. Financial Times Sure to appeal to older readers with a taste for the dark side, and probably to adults as well ... This is an impressive debut from young author Simon P. Clark, who doesn't shy away from pushing his story to its darkest reaches. The ending will leave you shell-shocked. -- Rebecca Davies Independent, TEEN BOOK OF THE MONTH Eren will both satisfy and excite your imagination. The Bookseller 'Book of the Week' If you let the story in, let Eren in, I think you'll be delighted and horrified by the inevitable conclusion. We Heart YA Dark, moody and easy to get lost in, Eren is a great book that makes audiences really wonder about the power of a good story. The Sprout Eren is a sophisticated look at truth and lies and the area inbetween inhabited by stories. On the other, it's a simple tale of a family in crisis. You're never quite sure what to believe and it never quite feels that the ground is steady beneath your feet. It takes skill to juggle all these balls and still involve the reader to such an extent they can't put your book down, but Clark carries it off with aplomb. This is storytelling at its best. Entertaining read By Live Outside 3.5 starsThis was an interesting novel and I found that I enjoyed it more when I sat back and read it instead of trying to scrutinize the details within the story. I find sometimes that spending too much time examining the particulars of a story takes away from a good read and this novel is one that falls into that category. The story opens up with Oli and his mother returning to his mother’s childhood home which his uncle and aunt now reside in. The plan is for his father to join them but there are countless delays centering on his career which later amount to bigger issues. This three-story house has ample amount of room for the three of them but Oli soon discovers there is someone else living in the attic. Oli’s summer vacation just got interesting. Oli cannot believe his discovery and like Oli, I also begin to wonder if this being is real or is a part of his imagination. Eren is massive with sharp claws and velvet-like wings. The author gives him creative abilities and his speech leaves Oli frustrated as nothing comes out plain and simple. Oli screams at Eren to tell him what he wants to know but Eren has his own of doing things and he will change for Oli. Eren needs Oli to survive, but there is only so much Oli can give to him. It was an entertaining read and I enjoyed reading Oli’s thoughts.I received a copy from NetGalley and St. Martin Griffin in exchange for an honest review.

By Liz Barnsley This was a gorgeous looking little novel with some wonderful illustrations and inside the pages a fairytale with a twist.A beautifully written and haunting piece, where reality blurs into fiction while fiction can take over reality, it is an off kilter read with an eerie and nostalgic feel that holds you in a spell all of its own. I loved it and was disturbed by it in equal measure and even now a while after finishing, it stays with me.Oli moves to the country with his mother, meets new friends but knows something is not right. As he tells stories to Eren, a creature in the attic, things clarify – or do they? It is an intelligent tale to be sure – even now I would not like to tell you whether Eren is friend or foe, real or imagined, this is a winding road with many surprises and no promise of a happy ending. Some absolutely gorgeous prose adds to the overall magical feel, whilst some very down to earth and realistic themes are explored.A wonderful read, no doubt about it, with some unforgettable characters and a world with no boundaries, if you like your fiction to grab you by the heartstrings and refuse to let go, this one is definitely for you. Highly Recommended.Source: Publisher review copy UK. Note: Beautiful little hardback if you are a collector of beautiful books you may want to go for the real thing in this case!

The book starts out with a scene between Oli and Eren. It follows this pattern of having each chapter begin with a scene between the two as Oli tells his story. This really adds to the mystery and builds the tension throughout. The setting added to the dark theme of the book, especially the attic and the forest. The descriptions were very well written and kept me hooked from the very beginning. This book would have benefited greatly if it had been longer. The interactions with Eren are short, which makes sense, but those with his family and friends seem very rushed. Em's stories were one of my favorite aspects from this book, but we never really see much else from her besides when she is telling the stories. I would have felt more of a connection with the other characters if there had been more background or chapters dedicated to them. This resulted in me not being as invested with Oli's dad or even the ending. I know it is supposed to be a middle-grade book, but with the mature themes it could have been a young adult book. Then the added length would have made sense.Overall, I enjoyed the book, especially being a middle-grade book. While not one of my absolute favorites, I recommend to anyone who is looking for something original with great writing, but short enough to read in a day.

More than a biography; Paul, Apostle of Grace is a Bible study of Paul's gospel of grace and God's ultimate plan from the beginning, including chapter reviews. Aside from Jesus of Nazareth, no person is more important to God’s eternal plan than the Apostle Paul. God designated Paul as the apostle of Grace, finally revealing to the world the mystery He had kept hidden since Creation (Ephesians 3:9). This book shows Paul’s invaluable mission given to him by Christ, our Lord. God needed someone resolute and bold, even brazen, yet a servant leader to bring in the new gospel after Christ’s Cross provided salvation and spiritual change. Paul’s life is a paradox: He was trained strictly in Jewish law yet called to preach Grace to both Jews and Gentiles, a zealous persecutor of Christians turned defender of the faith, even giving his life for it. His story is a study of transformation and God’s unpredictable choices and mysterious ways to accomplish His plan. Christ chose Paul specifically to teach believers the Gospel of Grace, the message of “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col. 1:27).

I'm secretly a softie!Martha is having a crisis of faith, and her relationship with her dying patient is sweet and genuine. It does feel a bit perverse reading a nice Christmas story in the middle of a heatwave, though :D

I never felt like I knew the characters. I wanted to read about them falling love, and it just didn't happen in this book.

We'll Never Be Apart, by Emiko Jean

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Alice Monroe has been sent back to the mental facility on Savage Isle. This time around, she carries physical scars to match her emotional ones. Her boyfriend Jason died in a fire while attempting to help her escape the hospital the last time she was a patient. Now her scars ache, in particular during her one-on-one sessions with the overly concerned Dr. Goodman or while she is near the irreverent loner Chase Ward. Alice's biggest cause for concern is Celia, her pyromaniac twin sister, who is locked in the neighboring D wing just a few miles away. "Cellie" is the one who started the fire that killed Jason and burned Alice. The only way to stop her? Alice will have to find a way out again and vanquish her once and for all. This story, one part mystery and two parts psychological thriller, also gives a substantial amount of time to the development of a romance between the roguish Chase and the isolated protagonist. The work is fleshed out by supporting characters like Amelia, Alice's punkish roommate, who proves to be just as dynamic and interesting as the main characters. Perhaps a little predictable at times, the plot and its conclusion will be guessed by savvy teens. In spite of this, Alice proves to be a compelling narrator worthy of her audience's attention. VERDICT A good secondary title for collections in need of YA intellectual thrillers with strong female protagonists.—Ryan P. Donovan, Southborough Public Library, MA

Review "Realistic characters make good use of a gothic setting that will attract anyone with a taste for the edge."—Kirkus   "A clever psychological thriller that had me holding my breath to the bitter end. More please!"—Kimberly Derting, author of the Body Finder series   "Engaging and twisted, Emiko Jean's WE'LL NEVER BE APART will draw you in and leave you reeling. An intimate study of damaged people, the pain they're in, and the havoc they wreak."—Kendare Blake, author of Anna Dressed in Blood   “I love a wild psychological ride—and Emiko Jean elevates the genre with this taut, provocative thriller. Jealously, violence, and revenge are the sharp corners of a novel that holds at center themes of loss, love, and the warm, beating heart of human connection. Alice and Celia are fascinating as twins whose personae play out along a rich dynamic of entrapment, suspicion, trauma, and alienation—and raise always-intriguing issues of sisterhood, duality, and how existing as a double is also a splintering of self. A killer debut!”  —National Book Award finalist Adele Griffin   “Haunting and gripping, WE’LL NEVER BE APART is a twisty, thrilling debut that kept me completely riveted. I can’t wait to read whatever Emiko Jean writes next!”—Megan Miranda, author of Fracture   “Taut and disquieting, WE'LL NEVER BE APART will unsettle you long before it pulls the rug from under your feet. Like the institution that Alice and Cellie call home, this book comes with a warning: Once inside, be careful who you trust.”—Kat Rosenfield, author of Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone

About the Author Emiko Jean is an elementary school math teacher, whose work with children in foster care inspired her debut novel, We'll Never Be Apart. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Blazing New Trails By BeatleBangs1964 Emiko Jean is a genius and a brilliant author. It's as simple as that.Alice Monroe, 17 has had a hard knock life, a life straight out of Dickens. Alice and her twin sister Celia were orphaned when their grandfather who was their only living guardian died. Readers know and learn nothing of the girls' parents. The girls fended for themselves for a few days until a kind neighbor saw them playing outside and took them in until other arrangements could be made. It was at the neighbor's house that Alice learned how to do origami and become quite proficient at it. It was also at this time that therapy became a large part of the girls' lives. The twins are bounced around from one unsatisfactory group home to a mental health facility to other group homes. It is at one group home where Alice meets Jason, a peer with a similar background to hers and who becomes her protector. He in fact would return to the home where they and the other charges were being abused and confront their abuser in a very effective manner.Alice and Cellie, as she calls her sister are fortunately not the cliche good twin-evil twin routine. It is plain that deep seated emotional problems are part of the picture and Alice appears to be very suggestible. She sees herself as the one who takes the blame for things that Cellie does, such as setting fires with Jason. The Pyro Peers have become quite a force to be reckoned with. After one such incident involving fire and violence, the Pyro Peers are committed to Savage Isle State Hospital in Washington State. Alice is free of Cellie, whom she believes is in the worst ward, D Ward with its barbed wire, high towers and guards. Other inmates have important parts in the story such as Alice's roommate Amelia, a girl with self mutilation issues. A boy named Chase becomes a staunch ally. Somehow Chase knows Alice is one of the Pyro Peers. Alice had served time in the same institution earlier in that same year after a horrific incident involving fire. She and Jason somehow manage to escape from the institution with dire consequences.Returned to the institution, Alice is faced with legal proceedings against her for the fire setting incidents. She is determined to find Cellie and believes that Chase can help her get to her sister so she can kill her. This is a very taut psychological novel. I love books like this. This is a book that will have readers staying up late to finish. As another U.S. reviewer noted, I think it is aimed at an older audience than 12. Adult themes and language are part of the story. That having been said, that somehow makes the characters all the more plausible and the story stronger. Alice has a horrific life and the institution is no place anybody would ever want to be. Even so, Alice lucks into the aptly named Dr. Goodman as her therapist. She also interacts with her fellow inmates. Seclusion and the Quiet Room, which was a padded cell are ever present dangers that hang over the inmates' heads like a Sword of Damocles. The legal repercussions of the fire starting; Alice's spotty memory and the good journal she keeps at the direction of Dr. Goodman make a good book even better. Readers will stay with this book until the very last page. The Dave Clark 5's delightful 1965 classic "Catch Us If You Can" could well underscore this book. So could "Hard Knock Life" from "Annie" and Arthur Brown's terrifying 1968 hit "Fire," which is a large part of the story.

Committed to a mental ward at Savage Isle, Alice is haunted by memories of the fire that killed her boyfriend, Jason. A blaze her twin sister Cellie set. But when Chase, a mysterious, charismatic patient, agrees to help her seek vengeance, Alice begins to rethink everything. Writing out the story of her troubled past in a journal, she must confront hidden truths."When they ask me what happened that night, I'll say, It was a mistake. But it wasn't. I don't remember, I'll say. But I do."- - -We'll Never Be Apart opens up to a horrific scene. From Cellie's point of view, we get to see the night this book is all centered around. The fire in the barn—a fire set by Cellie herself. Her twin, Alice, along with Alice's boyfriend, Jason, are caught in the fire. Cellie wants them to burn. She enjoys it. She feels like a third wheel and resents both of them for planning to leave her behind. After that, we jump ahead. Cellie and Alice have both been taken to Savage Isle—a hospital for the mentally ill. They are being kept separate. Alice wants revenge on her twin, because Jason died in the fire that night. So Alice makes it her mission to find where they are keeping her twin and kill her before she can finish what she started in that barn.We follow Alice's POV through the entire book, but there is also a flashback type element told in the form of Alice's journal. We learn how she and Cellie ended up where they are and a little bit of their past. We learn that the twins lived with their grandfather until he died. They were then sent to foster homes (which is how Jason came into the picture), some of which were okay, others...not so much. From the moment their grandfather died, we see a slow decline and really witness some of the true madness that lies within Cellie.I liked this book a lot, but it did have some flaws. Mostly, I found the pace a little bit slow and drawn out. In the end, it didn't matter much because the story was great; very thrilling and tough to put down.My favorite part of this book is the plot twist. You will probably see it coming, but the author does a great job of disguising it. I had an inkling it was happening, but I still needed confirmation. I won't spoil it, but it's pretty huge and awesome. Emiko Jean did a fantastic job with this.I also think the kind-of romance between Alice and Chase was cute, but Alice's constant moaning over Jason kind of ruined it for me. Again, this didn't matter much in the end, because it wasn't the main focus of the book. Alice and Cellie's life was the main focus. Their mutual declination as well as the revenge aspect were definitely in the forefront. The romance between Alice and Chase was more of an afterthought for me.Emiko Jean is a great writer. Her words were quite poetic and beautiful even with the grittiness of the story. The whole book had this dark, almost spooky feel to it. It was almost like a haze over the whole story. I don't know how to describe it other than that. :) But it was amazing. All in all, I definitely recommend this book. It has it's flaws—mainly a slowness to the plot—but it also has great strengths. The book is mysterious and creepy, but also thrilling and keeps you guessing. It has a very twisty plot, which I LOVED. The characters are very well written and quite relatable in some ways, even under the circumstances they are in. The ending had some loose ends, but not enough to leave you feeling unhappy. Emiko Jean wrapped up just enough, but left some things open for speculation. It was really a great book and I recommend it if you are looking for something creepy and surprising."And I know, I know, we'll never be apart."

By Kelly Gunderman This review originally appeared on my young adult book blog, herestohappyendings.com.I’ve always had problems with books that label themselves as thrillers, mostly because they are so predictable and the author just tries too hard to make it believable or interesting. The characters usually lack depth, and they’re typically uninteresting, because that author will work so hard to create a great story and plot line, and then they forget to do anything worthwhile with the characters. If you feel that way about a lot of “thrillers” that you have read, let me introduce you to We’ll Never Be Apart, by debut author Emiko Jean.Yes, this is her first novel. How, I have no idea. I had to double check that, because this book made it seem like she’s been writing for years. Part of me wishes this were the case, because I absolutely need more books by her. Since there are none, I want to go into hibernation until she writes another.Okay, let’s take a look at the book now, shall we?Our story starts off with our main character, Alice, locked up in a mental hospital called Savage Isle. They believe that she started a fire in an abandoned barn that gave her some pretty nasty burns and killed her boyfriend, Jason. Only she knows that her twin sister, Celia, started the fire. Alice finds out that Celia is locked up in the same hospital, in the D ward, which is the ward with the highest security. Since charges are being pressed against her, she is determined to make sure that her sister pays for what she did. While she is in Savage Isle, she meets her roommate, Amelia, who has spiky pink hair and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Amelia and Alice become good friends – eating meals together, sharing secrets, and spending their time together. Alice also meets Chase, a mysterious guy who was recently in the D Ward – and who promises to help Alice find Celia. So they work together, with Chase stealing key cards to break out of their locked rooms, and while trying to help Alice seek her revenge on Celia, the two form a bond and a relationship that makes Alice feel cared for in a way that she hasn’t in a long time. The characters in this book were deep and interesting. Their personalities are fantastic – especially Alice. She and Celia have had a very troubling past together, which is told in Alice’s journal entries that she keeps while she is a patient at Savage Isle. These journal entries describe Alice and Celia’s troubled childhoods that include going from foster home to foster home, abuse, and Celia and Jason’s love for setting fires. As the journal entries continue through each chapter, we learn more and more about how troubled Celia really is, and how Jason isn’t the person that Alice thought he was. This really is one of the few books that live up to the name of “thriller.” It’s exciting from the very first page, and it kept me guessing to the very last.Note: I received an ARC copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
