Spawning and dying over and over. But in the end he eventually finds armor to keep his bones together... Then he dies. He finds lots of friends like Spider. A good friend. Tools for how to equip parents to do their job By J:-)mi Introduction: I have built up a reputation as the CTF Devourer, the one who reads and reviews everything Christian Teen Fiction. I do also devour Christian Adult Fiction. Rarely though, do I open up a non-fiction book. However, there’s one topic I’m just passionate enough about to read non-fiction books on: Children’s Ministry. I’m a teacher by profession and a constant volunteer of anything and everything children’s ministry in my church. So when this book was presented to me for review I couldn’t resist going out of the fiction realm. And it’s worth it. I can definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the spiritual development of children. It has some good thought-provoking things to say. I’ll discuss some of them in the “notes” section below.Think about helping parents become spiritual leaders of their children. Think about how difficult it is in our culture to educate, inspire, and remain faithful to the cause. Now think about what it would look like if Christian parents barely thought about spiritually leading their families through every age and stage of their child’s development because it had become second nature. Just think, in one generation, this could change. Cook, 2015Genre: Non-FictionTarget Audience: Boys and Girls 18+Subjects: Children’s Ministry, Family Ministry, ParentingSummary: “Family Ministry”, “Children and Families Pastor”, “Family Program”, these terms are gaining popularity. Our culture has begun to recognize that complete total segregation of ages within church is not the ideal. We’ve started to recognize that church ministry leaders who see children 2-4 hours a week can not be the primary spiritual leaders of children instead of their parents. For a few generations those of us in the church have willingly tried to do the role of the parents and the parents have willingly let us. It hasn’t worked. More and more children are walking away from the faith when they leave home. So we implement this idea of a family focused ministry. But how does that work? What does it look like? In this book, the authors lay out seven values such a ministry can latch on to and make the focus of the ministry. Some of the ideas are radical and some are just plain practical. Some are a continuance of things many churches are already doing and some are new ideas that few have tried before.Notes: The main points the author covers are that a good “Family Ministry” needs to include the following seven values: Empowering families to take spiritual leadership in the home, forming lifetime faith that transcends childhood beliefs, teaching Scripture as the ultimate authority of truth, understanding the role of the Holy Spirit to teach and transform, engaging every generation in the gospel of God’s redemptive story (of note: one great way to help with this point is to use the What’s In The Bible DVDs – they do a great job of presenting the big picture of God’s Grand Redemptive Story all the way through the Bible), making God central in every biblical narrative and daily living, and participating in community with like-minded ministry leaders. Each of these points is explained in very great detail. In fact, there are so many sub-points it’s almost like each chapter could be it’s own book! One of my favorite aspects of the book is the end of each chapter. The authors give suggestions for specific activities to apply the lessons in the chapter. It may be a way to evaluate your current ministry and see how effectively it is meeting the needs of those in it or it may be an activity for parents to do with their children.From what I gather as I read through this book, one thing to take note of is that the authors present a slightly charismatic approach towards children’s ministry. There are a number of references to feelings and letting the Holy Spirit lead the ministry. There is nothing in the book that is directly contrary to Scripture, it just presents a slight slant towards the charismatic.This book could be beneficial for anyone interested in children or family ministry or parenting. It is most useful though for leaders of a children’s ministry program or family ministry program in their churches. Most of the content has to do with changing the whole direction a ministry is heading and is applicable only to the actual leaders of the ministry as opposed to one teacher or one parent who does not have a say in the decision making process. It’s benefit for others is the mindset it creates, helping everyone involved in a ministry grasp why it is important to do things in a certain way.Spiritual Content Recommendation Scale: 5/5Reviewer: J:-)miDeuteronomy 6:6-9 - These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. There were great applications points at the end of each chapter to help incorporate the principles into ministry at home or elsewhere. There are nine chapters in this book. The first chapter discusses the intricacies of the family ministry movement and how to become involved. The second through eighth chapter go through the seven essentials listed above. The ninth chapter goes over how to be spiritually healthy leader in this current generation. I liked how this book puts together important aspects of family ministry into one concise collection, using essential topics, some of which are pretty 'simple' in theory, but are certainly important to use and to keep in mind. Overall, I thought this book was a great resource and highly useful in a home or greater student ministry setting.I received this book from Litfuse in exchange for an honest review.

I am not in the ministry but I do have a longing to reach children and their families and bring them to Christ, with a living and life long relationship. Most churches prefer to have families separated the moment they walk through the door – we don’t want babies to cry and distract us, we don’t want a bored child coloring on a piece of paper and we don’t want a teen who hasn’t been taught to be present in church falling asleep. What if it could look different with families engaged with one another and also engaged in Christ and being fully present together? Our churches would become more powerful and better equipped to reach those in our communities and our world if all are equipped and able to give a sound reason for their faith.Now, I know that I’m in a unique position, in that I home-school so almost all our curricula is centered on Christ as the focal point – He is the focal point of our family, and at times we fail – but being the sole educator for my three children gives me the chance to really teach about Christ, both in action and words. Our history text weaves in Biblical history with what was and is going on in the world at the same time – it puts it all together, not like Sunday School curricula where children can’t and don’t see how history lines up with Daniel in the Lion’s Den or Christ’s birth. We need to start giving out more than just milk and expect the parents to do it at home without any direction. Even I wasn’t prepared and it’s taken years for me to become comfortable with teaching my children Biblical truths, so how much harder for those families that have to overcome public school mentality or who have never been to church?This book isn’t just about ministry in the church but about making it in the home as well – there were several ideas that I’d like to implement in our home. One is writing prayer requests and hanging them for all to see and then as prayers are answered listing those praises. The church needs to recognize that they will be stronger when the family, as a whole, is included in the worship of our Lord and the learning about Him and His Word. I’d highly recommend this book to those who work with youth, whether in a youth program that seeks to lift up the Lord, those who work in their ministries at church and even just those who desire to create a more worshipful environment at home, this book has something for everyone so that the whole family can learn to love and serve the Lord and have a HUGE impact!**I was provide a copy of this book from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.

From the history of the practice (including the Nritya Shastra and Pranayama) to a detailed overview of the different types of mudras,I was also impressed at the wide range of applications that are explained here - from anti-ageing to prosperity to fighting depression. Baruwal spends a balanced amount of time describing the physical aspects of the practice, such as the different types of breathing; the psychological aspects, such as concentration, visualization, and affirmation practices; the harmonious aspects, such as how the five elements tie in to the practice; and of course, the spiritual elements as well.In short, this is a very thorough overview for long time practitioners as well as beginners. Definitely worth more than $0.99!

I am a regular mediator and have found this book to be useful in enchancing my practice. The book is well-written, easy to follow and the illustrations are clear. This book will indeed change the way of losing weight. Add it up to all of your diet books, exercise and I guarantee a much progress. With mudras, you do not need a specific location as it can be carried out anywhere and at anytime. The author did a great job. I highly recommend.

By Xara T I have read before that Mudras can be an effective help in losing weight, but this book has enlightened me to a different benefit that it can give--to radiate energy, love, and serenity. I think this is such an inspiring book, motivating and full of wise tips too. We need this kind of book especially now that times are hard and stress is always here. I learned a lot of great stuff here and the pictures added well to my comprehension on how do each Mudras correctly.

Neville My daughter has had this book since she turned 1, and now she's 3 still enjoys it. It's ideal as a final book at bedtime as it only has 4 double-pages, each of them covering a major landmark (e.g. St Paul's Cathedral), so it's really quick to read. There is only one interactive question listed on each double-page, so we make up our own 'can you spot a ...' questions as part of reading this book at bedtime.

An Important Record Of A Good Man's Experiences While Escaping From North Korea By scesq This is a hard book to put down despite the suffering involved. The reason for this is Joseph Kim tells his tale in a simple straight forward manner which made me care about what happened to him. This is not a book with a political agenda but one where the only agenda seem to be telling what happened to him and his family.When Joseph was about 13 years old he was homeless because his father died in the great famine and his mother, after selling his sister as a “bride slave” in China, abandoned him because she was a “burden.” Homeless, Joseph went from begging to stealing to survive.He explains, “I became a different person when I became homeless. For one thing I was shocked to learn I was a better thief than I was a beggar.” He then explains how this happened naturally as if his body knew what to do when hunger reached a certain point. He says, “I don’t remember any moral debate about whether stealing was wrong.”Joseph is a good man driven to steal to survive in a world where death was all to common. He is much kinder to his mother than I would have been. I was happy when he found his way to freedom.I recently read and reviewed on Amazon another book called “A Thousand Miles To Freedom” written by Eunsun Kim who escaped North Korea with her mother and sister. While both books have some similarities and both are recommended I found Joseph Kim’s book more informative about what life was like for the average North Korean before, during and after the great famine. His time homeless and stealing to survive and his time in a forced labor camp tells a lot about Joseph and the conditions people faced.This is an important book considering the lack of information about life in North Korea. It is also an important record of what Joseph Kim, a good man, had to do to survive.

Hard to Put Down By JKT This is a wonderful narrative of life in North Korea and I was so enthralled with it that I read it cover to cover in one day. I think as an American the differences are such a contrast that it is hard to imagine. And try as I might I can't imagine myself in that situation with any authenticity, because it's a leap too far from my reality. Perhaps what drew me in most what the fact that the author and I are only 10 years separated in age so when he lists the years 1996, 2001 and what he was doing those years... I was remembering what I too was doing those years, maybe at the exact same moment when he was scratching in the dirt for food, at the same time I was here in America totally oblivious to the North Korean famine.This book will have a broad appeal to both the secular reader and possibly a Christian reader. I selected this book as a Christian reader, because the snippet of a teaser I read said something about the author meeting Christians who took him in and changed his life... so I was going into the book hoping for something along these lines. I think this is the only area where the book disappointed me. The Christian angle was downplayed a great deal. It only manifests at the very end, and it certainly is not focal point. We don't hear much about how transforming his faith was at all. Maybe the little bit they did mention will be enough for some Christian readers, and not too much for the secular readers to be put off. But I only mention it because, if like me you were hoping for a more in depth look at how faith transforms someone who has never heard about Jesus - this will not be that book.That aside I would still encourage you to read this book, it's still a great story and an important one to be told.

This is the second book in two weeks that I have read that was written by a former North Korean defector. Joseph Kim's story is very similar to the story I read last week by Eunsun Kim, "A Thousand Miles to Freedom." Both authors escaped by crossing into China to the north. But here is where the similarities end.Joseph Kim is brutally honest in his memoir from the start. He's his father's only son and was always treated with more reverence when compared to his older sister. Even his older sister shared her food with him and he always expected to be given special treatment because of his gender.Life in North Korea as a young child started out well. There was love and parental security at first, although there are hints of his parents struggling with the marriage. But when the family endures the famine in North Korea in the late 1990s, things start to change for Joseph. He becomes just one more mouth to feed among his relatives and becomes a burden. His poor school grades and his gambling habits further disappoint his father, who had until the famine been rewarded well with a decent job and income.His writing is easy to follow, and the short chapters end with a somewhat suspenseful statement hinting that things would get worse and worse until he finally does escape the nightmare that is North Korea.Most of the narrative bogs down not about Christianity, or about how he found his faith, it's about the inhumane suffering of the North Koreans that he experienced while still in the country. This story is not just a Christian story, this is a story about survival and coming to realize that the North Korean government and its leaders don't care about its people. Joseph comes to realize that his attitude about being special for being a man was wrong, because it's the many women in his life, and women he's met along his journey, who have helped him become what he is today. Here is where he learns to be a better man, through his new faith, and looks back at his life realizing how wrong he was. The story should appeal to anyone interested in North Korea. Even non-Christians will enjoy this narrative.

Love the main characters and the plot is not the typical " strangers stranded on a desert island". The island isn't deserted, and the people there aren't cannibals, but they are just as dangerous! To survive, the characters have to keep from being found, but the only way to escape is through the other people on the island. Therefore the book is suspenseful! It is a great mix of stress and humor and did not leave me exhausted and needing a break. Love how the book ends and the part with the "angel of death" is too funny. Melissa has created a masterpiece once again!!!

I somehow missed the part where it was 1910 and was a few pages in before I figured it must be in the early 1900's based on the characters dialogue and social rules. I thought it was neat how even though I didn't know what year the book should take place in, it was obvious from the writing style that it was early 1900's. Since the rest of Ms. Simonin's books to date that I've read are all in present time I think this shows her versatility in writing style. The story held my attention well and I was able to relax while reading it, secure in the knowledge that things would work out. Maybe some people don't like that predictability, but I read enough horrible news stories that I crave that security when I read for fun. Another great read by my newest favorite author.

She is a super author. Guess we have all heard about someone saying that once they start reading some books that they have a hard time putting the book down. Melissa's books are that way. Her characters become so real and life like, you actually become friends with the characters. I believe you will enjoy reading each page of the book, I know I did. Thank you, Melissa R. L. I was intending to spend the evening with my girlfriend, Kayla. It didn’t happen. The next thing I knew is that I was lying on my back in a wigwam staring into the dark eyes of a guy who was as surprised to see me as I was to encounter him. That’s just the start of it. Ever dined on roasted grasshoppers or whale meat? Have you been chased by a bear or saved a little boy’s life? Have you seen someone chip an arrowhead, make a basket, or gone spear fishing? .I end up doing all of these things and more in my two weeks of adventure living in the past. My biggest concern is how to get home. This is not my place and it’s not my time. Do I eventually get there? Of course, but you’ll have to read about that on your own. The weird thing is that I still don’t know whether I dreamed this whole experience or that it somehow really happened. Maybe you’ve got some ideas about that one. Here’s a brief excerpt from early in my adventure that I hope will encourage you to read on: “I raise the offered stick with something cooked on it closer to my face to inspect and smell it. It’s not bad when I sniff it. Part of the meat strip is overcooked and burned, the remainder of it is undercooked and red. Does it really matter that the meat’s not uniformly cooked? “Just eat it,” I tell myself. I’m so hungry at this point that I could eat one of the dogs wandering around camp! On second thought I decide not to tempt fate. I’ve no idea what creature the meat came from that I’m about to devour. I take a tiny, tentative bite and chew. Mmm, it tastes good, very good. I look in the direction of Squirrel and make smacking sounds with my lips. He laughs. Then, I take a bigger bite, and then another. So you know that question your friends sometimes ask when you’re eating a food that they’ve never tried: Does it taste like chicken? No, it doesn’t taste like chicken. My stomach growls, because I’m still hungry. Apparently a combination of fear, anxiety, confusion, disorientation, and helplessness, you name it, doesn’t affect my appetite. I’m always hungry, anyway.” There’s more to this book than just a story. The contents are based on good anthropology and solid archaeological facts. I know that, because the author is a real archaeologist who lives and works in New England. This story should be fun and entertaining, but it should also help you to better understand and appreciate differences among people and at the same time realize that there is so much that we share as human beings regardless of time and culture.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Something Unique for the Young Adult By James McCormick Wigwams in my Backyard is a very unique “young adult” novel. Matt, a Maine teenage boy, finds himself cast backward in time 1300 years to meet the people living on the exact same land as his family’s suburban home. For the first little while, he’s befuddled by everything. The sights, sounds, and smells are vaguely familiar but also out of kilter with his modern experience. The trees are strangely bigger, as are the fish in the lakes and streams. The lakeside itself is different … because the entire landscape has actually sunk a few feet over the last 13 centuries. “Wigwams,” however, makes great use of Matt’s own knowledge to contrast it with life among Native Americans of the time. The people are constantly busy gathering food and preparing it, tuned carefully to the season and to the weather. Hard work and unexpected challenges fill the story. Despite not having the right skills, the teenager from the present must find a way to pitch in and help provide for the men, women, and children around him. And not understanding the language, he must constantly guess what he should do. Sometimes he gets it wrong.Though written with a “G-rating” suitable for schools and any audience, “Wigwams” fits many fascinating details about the land, animals and Native American culture into its story. This book is definitely meant for a teenage audience that can follow the rich descriptions, and transport themselves mentally into a different, but familiar, world. Kids and adults growing up along coastal Maine, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts will find this book especially fun. A pre-teen with a keen interest in prehistoric archeology or zoology might find this book a bit challenging … some Googling and note-taking might be required … but they’ll have their eyes opened wide to the lives of the people living in coastal Maine so long ago, and have a new appreciation of what life without modern conveniences is like.A great birthday or holiday gift for the young adult reader.The author is a professional archeologist with a deep knowledge of the geography, environment, and history of the area where the novel is set. It shows. His makes great use of the plants, animals and birds in “Wigwams.” The food preparation, tools and shelters of Native Americans are carefully described and reflect exactly what modern archeology has discovered. The story has a good balance of information and drama for young adults. Adults might not find enough violence and romance — no Daniel Day-Lewis bare-chested amongst the last of the Mohicans — but there’s enough to keep any reader engaged.Drawbacks? Few, for its audience. If “Wigwams” had illustrations to match key descriptions of Native technology and/or a map to help the reader keep track of different locations where the characters travel … this would make a fine book for use in a junior high English course. Especially in the Northeast US.Bottom line: I hope the author continues on and gives us similar adventures with Matt in different times or places in prehistoric Maine. This is a great introduction to a young character in fascinating circumstances.

Gillispie This History of Fun Stuff is a great series for kids in early middle grade school (2nd to 4th grade). The books are all Ready-to-Read short chapter books (Level 3) with a section at the end with more in depth notes and/or notes for further research and a multiple-choice comprehension quiz.What I liked is that they present a nice survey of the history of something -- pizza, ice cream, phones, video games, etc -- that kids are interested in anyway and expand the lesson (a little bit) to include some historical, geographical or scientific information as well. Well done!

Alfarabi (ca. 870–950) founded the great tradition of Aristotelian/Platonic political philosophy in medieval Islamic and Arabic culture. In this second volume of political writings, Charles E. Butterworth presents translations of Alfarabi's Political Regime and Summary of Plato’s "Laws" , accompanied by introductions that discuss the background for each work and explore its teaching. In addition, the texts are carefully annotated to aid the reader in following Alfarabi’s argument. An Arabic-English/English-Arabic glossary allows interested readers to verify the way particular words are translated. Throughout, Butterworth’s method is to translate consistently the same Arabic word by the same English word, rendering Alfarabi’s style in an unusually faithful and yet approachable manner.
Political Regime consists of two parts. One focuses on nature and natural existing things as well as the principles beyond nature that guide the existing things. In the second part, the exposition centers on human beings and their place in the larger cosmic whole as well as on how a proper organization of human life in political association provides the conditions whereby human beings might achieve their purpose.
Summary of Plato’s “Laws” gives an account of the first nine books of Plato’s Laws. Alfarabi explains Plato’s art of writing in general and the method he follows in writing the Laws in particular. Unlike Alfarabi’s other works, which examine the place of legislation and laws in the broader context of political philosophy, the Summary is a more specialized study of the question of laws and how and why they are formulated, with a particular focus on the relevance of Plato’s investigation concerning Greek divine laws for the study and understanding of all divine laws.
