Continuing the liberating conversation of guilt-free joy, author and speaker Christine Vogelsang presents the second book in her Restoring the Joy series, which compiles fifty new reflections and discussions on various “joy-sucking” situations. While many well-intentioned books leave you feeling ashamed at your lack of spiritual progress, this candid gem lifts your eyes to focus on what the Lord has done for you and invites you to rest blissfully in him regardless of what you have or haven’t accomplished.

Flinging wide the doors to freedom from page one, Vogelsang flips the usually guilt-ridden reaction to being part of a me-focused generation by drawing a surprisingly positive conclusion: It’s okay to feel special and cherished because you’re not just one of the crowd with Jesus. From there, her stories continue to reflect how God uses the ordinariness of the everyday to transform your life into something extraordinary—all you need to do is let him work.

Perfect for small group settings, the stand-alone chapters cover a broad spectrum of topics and will serve to reignite your love for Christ, passion for life, and belief that you can experience true joy today.

About the Author

Christine Vogelsang is a teacher, musician, pastor’s wife, and mother of three adult children. Over the past thirty-five years, her family has enjoyed the love of congregations in Tennessee, Arkansas, and now Southern California. She has earned her master’s degree in education, taught at various schools (from kindergarten to college), and served as director of music at her current church.

While writing and speaking about the joy of being God’s child has always been a part of her life, it wasn’t until Vogelsang’s weekly inspirational blogs gained an international following that she decided to publish her first book. She has also written and produced three plays about people and events in the Gospels that bring these ancient stories to life.

Upon retiring from church ministry with her husband, Vogelsang plans to continue her book series and schedule more speaking engagements that highlight her spiritual passion: joy without guilt.

Whether it be joyful or sad it has all been felt before by someone. Christine has described that no matter what we go through it is never the end. We do have something to live for and that is the life of a Christian serving the Lord. Because Jesus gave his life for us we can get through life's "speed bumps" with peace and comfort. He will never forsake us. Christine's descriptions of her life's experiences shows how God's love comes through for us no matter what the situation. Christine herself is a wonderful example of Christian love and it comes through in her writings. This book is a blessing for all who read it. You will never be disappointed reading Christine's books. The words are uplifting and comforting with a very personal touch. Thank you Christine!

By Kim Burditt Christine Vogelsang's Restoring the Joy, book two is another dose of regaining our joy with Christ. I LOVE sitting down with a cup of coffee, and reading 'another conversation'. Today I read NO MORE DIETS, and I love how the the story gently reminds me that my true satisfaction comes from Christ and not the ice cream I so often seek. I look forward to reading a story daily, and I personally like to pick a story at random and know that is the story God wanted me to hear for the day. Each story is so engaging that I find myself being entertained and enlightened all in the same few pages. I would highly recommend this book for everyone. So, sit down, put up your feet and feel the joy that only Christine's style and wit can bring to her stories. Oh what joy this book brings!!!!!

By Louise Connors This book is filled Christine's different life experiences anchored by scripture passages. I could comment on every page, but will just give one example of her writings that touched my heart. In chapter 4 she writes, "I don't want my words to go directly from my head to my mouth without going through my heart". WOW! What powerful words! After reading this and her first book, I'm even more anxious to read her next!

Dog Stories comprises two kids illustrated stories. The first story is about Alex who wants to become a life-saver rather than play with his dog, Bud. When his mother orders him to take Bud for a walk, Alex plays with his friends instead, leaving Bud to get into trouble. Before long, Bud destroys the ball with which Alex and his friends are playing, and then tears apart Alex’s favorite backpack, too. Alex is very angry. The next day in school, however, a police officer tells the class that bad dogs are often the result of an owner not taking proper care of them. Alex is ashamed and resolves to treat Bud better. The second story is about Peter who is a shy ten year old boy whose only friend is an older female teacher, Ms. Muffin. Peter is like that until he goes on a wonderful vacation to Italy with his parents and makes an amazing, but unusual best friend. This modest, shy little boy makes a friend for life, by letting Caesar become a part of his life and talking to him. After that, the doors to new friendships were wide open for Peter. ‘Kids Book: Dog Stories (Kids Book About Animals and Dog Book for Kids)’ is a delightful kids book comprising two inspirational stories for kids. A great kids book that can be read to those younger than 5, a read alone or with guidance book for kids age 5-8, or a read alone tale for kids 9-12. This book is beautifully illustrated and designed to captivate the imagination of every child enjoying it. A wonderful addition to any library, especially those collecting kids picture adventure books for the Kindle or picture books about nature. This story is appropriate for reading to children anytime including at bedtime.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. LEARNING FROM MAN'S BEST FRIEND By Barbara Mojica This book contains exactly what the title says, two completely different dog stories. In both of them, man's best friend succeeds in making an important point. Ultimately that lesson will lead the young boy protagonist to learn something about himself as well as the dog character in the story.Plot of the first story features a boy named Alex and his Jack Russell Terrier pup, Bud. Like many children, Alex is finding walking his dog a task not high on his priority list. When he tries to combine the task with playing with his friends in the park, Bud gets into trouble. Alex unfairly blames Bud. But a visitor at school next day, teaches Alex to change his ways.In the second story, Peter is a shy boy who has few friends. When his parents inform him that they will be traveling to Italy, his fears are intensified. Ms. Muffin, his teacher, tries to encourage him. What happens to Peter when he gets to Italy, and how will his new friend influence his life when he gets back home? The book is targeted for ages five through twelve. In my opinion, it is most effective as an early independent reader. There are some illustrations, but they are rather small and stylized. Together with the length of the sentences, children in the five to seven age might find it hard to follow. Teachers might use the book in read aloud sessions for class discussion.

Each of us, in our own shade of color, says something unique about who God is to the world around us. God didn't give specific colors to specific genders. It's one big color wheel, and gender isn't in the equation. How does our embracing our authentic color - unapologetically who we are - controlled by the Spirit, impact our view of women in conservative faith communities? Lime Green helps answer that questions. This a story about Jackie Roese, a clueless farm girl who stumbled into vocational Christian work. Jackie bumped into walls, crossed invisible lines, and ultimately reshaped her view of women-and her church's view, too. This book doesn't make the case for women to preach or lead in the church. Rather, it shares this is one woman's story of stumbling and bumping to reveal a way, a path with all its rocks, hills, and smooth road, to help others find their footing in reshaping the way we view women in the Church. Every follower of Christ is given gifts by the Holy Spirit for the building up of the church. And the same gifts are given to both men and women. Jackie Roese is a gifted leader and teacher who has an important story to tell about finding her gifts and using them for the building up of the body of Christ. In this book Jackie tells her story with characteristic courage and candor. It's an important story that will challenge and inspire anyone who reads it.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I think I am Lime Green - and Can Now See a Way to Embrace That By Nancy Underwood WOW. Lime Green was a total page turner for me - eloquently written, honestly told, and revealing some hard questions that need to be considered by men and women alike. After reading this book I simultaneously wanted to give a copy to everyone I know and invite the author out for a glass of wine. Lime Green made me chuckle, made me teary, and made me think. This book is an important contribution to a genre that is fast growing and best known by books such as Half the Church, Half the Sky, and Jesus Feminist, books exploring and reiterating how women are necessary and important in a highly functioning society and at the same time that we do not all look the same - and maybe that is a good thing. Maybe that is the best thing, and actually, Jesus' plan all along. I highly recommend this book!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Keep Reading, It’s So Worth It! By Diane Fillmore To be honest, I almost gave up on Lime Green way too early. Initially it seemed like the author was using color as a way to stereotype people. Individuals categorized by imaginary color groups seem no different than individuals herded into groups according to gender or race. I recalled the words of David G. Benner when he wrote in Surrender to Love, “The problem with thinking in terms of personality types is that people too easily put themselves (or others!) into a box and fail to encounter the parts of self that don’t fit into that box. No matter how good the system of personality classification, the best typology captures only a small part of the uniqueness of persons. Large parts always remain outside the box.” In her early chapters Roese appeals to readers to realize that godly Christian women come in more than one package color. Her use of colors almost seems to contradict her premise though. But then I kept reading, making a deliberate effort to look beyond what is arguably an awkward extended metaphor and to listen to the heart of what the author is saying. It was only then that I unearthed the pithy nuggets of truth presented in this book. Dr. Roese’s personal stories allowed me to watch her develop from a timid, corn planting farmer’s daughter, to a quiet seminary wife to a confident woman, sure of her own worth and calling. As she develops spiritually and intellectually, so does her message and her awareness of what is crippling the churches’ efforts to share the gospel with the lost. Nowhere is her message more compelling than in the analogy that opens Chapter Six: Our family spent summers going to Gilbert Lake, a small lake about fifteen minutes from our house. Though there were several lifeguard stations, only one had a certain whistle. That whistle was blown to alert everyone that someone had gone under the water and not come back up. When we heard that whistle, everyone present lined up along the shore, linked arms and started dredging the lake. The hope was that one of us would bump into the person who had gone under in time to save his or her life. Can you imagine the person under water looking at the line and saying something like, “Man, I can’t have that black guy save me!” or “I can’t have a woman save me!”? Absurd, right? And can you imagine if someone on the shore refused to link arms with people because they weren’t the right age, color, shape, religious belief, or gender? Again, absurd. Because then there’d be a gap in the link, and that gap maybe very well be where the person lay under water—dying. I picture a guy under water screaming, “Hurry! Link up! Someone, anyone, find me!” Figuratively speaking, a whole lot of people have sunk under the water, dying little deaths and big deaths all over the place. Did you know there are 160 million street children and 300 million child laborers? Did you know the sex industry is a 97.06 billion dollar worldwide business and that there are more strip clubs in the United States than any other nation? Did you know seven young people from the class of 2007 in my suburban city have either committed suicide, overdosed or been killed in a car accident? Did you know some of my relatives are drowning under water? Some of yours are too. There are people outside and inside our churches drowning. Those people can’t afford for us Christians to stand on the shore fighting or dredging the lake with gaps in the line because we’re too busy arguing over who gets to do what. As Dorothy Sayers wrote, when it comes to doing life-‐ and soul-‐saving work in the kingdom of God: “As we cannot afford to squander our natural resources of minerals, food, and beauty, so we cannot afford to discard any human resources of brains, skills, and initiative even though it is women who possess them”(117). Chapter Nine felt like sitting down for coffee with a very wise mentor. Here Dr. Roese reminds readers what God is doing in the world and how we can best cooperate with Him. “What we have going on in our churches and around the globe is not a women’s issue; it’s a human issue. It’s not an issue about women’s equality. Jesus didn’t die so we could be equal. Jesus died for something bigger than that. Equality means I’ve got my rights, and you’ve got yours, and so we’re good with each other. Do you hear how we can simply tolerate rather than integrate? Instead, God created man and woman (community) to live in shalom. Whenever and where shalom is broken, we hear the cry of our Savior, “I’m offended.” That’s bigger than equality. It may include equality, but it doesn’t rest there. Interdependent. Intertwined. Embracing otherness, as we become one (174). Dr. Roese wraps up her book by advising us how to lay down our anger at injustice so that we can better affect our churches in world changing ways. Her sage, practical counsel was the highlight of the book for me. It made me glad I kept persevering past my initial misunderstanding of the color lime green.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It's About Jesus. By D. M. Dunn Full disclosure: I serve on the board of The Marcella Project (marcellaproject.com), Dr. Jackie Roese's ministry that works to ennoble women. Obviously I'm a fan of this book, but it is precisely because I know Jackie and her heart and calling that I am willing to give my time and energies to support her and her work. Jackie is not interested in fighting battles about what women can and cannot do within the church; she's interested in encouraging women to trust how God made them and to use their giftedness to advance God's Kingdom. In Lime Green, Jackie tells her own story, constantly returning to Scripture, to show how we are all created uniquely by God, and how the whole body of Christ is strengthened when all the gifts of the Spirit are brought to bear. Throughout the book, her pastor's heart reaches out to encourage, lift up, and dignify women - all women - and to make the case that all the gifts of the Spirit are valuable and necessary and should be used fully to make Jesus known.Jackie's story is compelling, but what readers walk away with is not her story, but a better understanding of how we fit into His story. As Jackie says at the end of the book, "My passion is to ennoble women. It's just not my end all be all - Jesus is." Her love for Jesus and desire for all women to live in the fullness of Him and who He created them to be is what this book is about.

Princess Sophie is exhausted, and it's all because that grumpy old giant up on the beanstalk can't sleep. His stomps and stamps keep everyone awake. But as the resourceful Princess Sophie reads her favorite book of fairy tales, she wonders if she might just have the answer. She bravely climbs the beanstalk carrying a tasty bowl of porridge, a cuddly teddy bear, and cozy blanket to help soothe the giant. But nothing works until finally Sophie hits upon the perfect thing — a bedtime story! Everyone lives (and sleeps) happily ever after, but when Sophie then teaches the giant how to read himself, it is the most perfect ending of all.

The Princess and the Giant, by Caryl Hart

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—Princess Sophie hasn't gotten any sleep lately, and it's all because of a restless giant stomping in his castle at the top of a magical bean stalk planted at the back of Sophie's yard. When she asks her parents why giants are so mean and bad, Sophie's dad hands her a book of fairy tales. With the help of some trusty classic tales, Sophie dreams up ideas to help get her giant friend to sleep. Readers follow the fearless heroine as she scales the bean stalk to deliver a small pot of porridge in hopes of getting the giant to bed. When her plan fails, Sophie simply devises another and another. Eventually, she learns that all the giant really needs is a proper bedtime story and perhaps a good teacher, too. Like Sophie, Hart and Warburton rely on classic fairy tales to pull off this charming feat of a story. This is a fabulous fractured fairy tale with as many twists and turns as the stunningly illustrated bean stalk that spreads throughout the pages. Hart's well-crafted rhyming text is lengthy and winding but full of enchanting surprises. Large illustrations mixed with intricate and carefully imagined details are sure to keep the interest of princesses, princes, kings, and queens of all ages. VERDICT A fun read-aloud for fairy tale-themed storytimes or bedtime reading.—Brianne Colombo, Pequannock Township Public Library, NJ

Review In addition to her refreshing twist on "Jack and the Beanstalk," Hart also reverses traditional gender roles: the king cooks, and the queen chops wood. Young readers may not notice, but adults will appreciate the shift. Warburton's bright mixed-media artwork provides a playful stage for Sophie's colossal adventure. A clever fractured fairy tale that princes and princesses of all ages will enjoy.—Kirkus Reviews

She LOVES this book. We just purchased it (I'll get it in a day or so) for our friend's daughter whose name is Sophie (the girl's name in the book). I know that even though Sophie is turning 5, she will love it as much as our 2 1/2 year old does. It will be a perfect book for her to continue learning to read with. We have all three of the Princess books by Caryl Hart and this one is my favorite! My second favorite one is the Princess and the Peas (We also have Princess and the Presents, but I'm not as big of a fan of that one). See[...] for other books by her. She's amazing and so is the illustrator.

The princess tunes up her own bike, the dad makes the porridge, the mom chops the wood. The princess is empathetic because she wants to help the giant sleep and doesn't accept that he's just "mean and bad" like the old fairy tales say. She tries to do something that will help him (like bring him bears to hug, blankets, etc.), and each time a plan fails, she comes up with a new plan and tries something else. Great lessons to impart regarding perseverance. My 4.5 year old LOVES this book and I don't have to alter a single word of it (I admit, sometimes I change some words in other books when I feel they doesn't send the right message).

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend,” Proverbs 27:17 tells us. God uses Christian friendships to help His children grow in grace and stay true to Christ. But our twenty-first-century Western culture values individualism, busyness, and selfishness—qualities that do not encourage deep, long-lasting, satisfying friendships. The authors guide us through a practical survey of biblical and historical friendships, drawing principles from them that will aid us in forming our own biblical friendships that will sharpen us for our Christian journey in a world that is no friend to grace. Author Joel R. Beeke is president of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary and a pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Michael A. G. Haykin is professor of church history and biblical spirituality as The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Endorsements “A treasure! From two of my friends, a booklet about friendship that makes me thankful for them and what they have written. Friendship is what Jesus gifts in His final hours—‘you are my friends’—and discovering friendship with others is one of God’s great gifts. Winsomely thoughtful and practical, this is a rare treasure that is bound to be read widely.” — Derek W. H. Thomas, senior minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina; Robert Strong Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology, RTS Atlanta “This booklet is needed in the Christian world as people relate to phones and iPads but increasingly less to others. Here is an accessible, reader-friendly, ‘one-stop’ treatment of the Bible’s encouragement to form and sustain rich friendships. It is lucid but not simplistic, judicious but not obscure, and convicting but not shrill.” — Geoff Thomas, pastor, Alfred Place Baptist Church, Aberystwyth, Wales Cultivating Biblical Godliness Series D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones once said, “The world today is looking for, and desperately needs, true Christians. I am never tired of saying that what the Church needs to do is not to organize evangelistic campaigns and attract outside people, but to begin herself to live the Christian life. If she did that, men and women would be crowding into our buildings. They would say, ‘What is the secret of this?’” Many people who are new to the church need instruction in the most basic aspects of godly living. Even where churches are engaged heavily in discipleship, visitors and members often have gaps in their understanding and practice. One of the greatest needs of our time is for the Spirit of God to cultivate biblical godliness in us in order to put the glory of Christ on display through us, all to the glory of God the Father. For these reasons, Joel Beeke and Ryan McGraw are coediting a series of booklets titled Cultivating Biblical Godliness. These booklets treat matters that are vital to Christian experience, and each contribution aims to address a wide variety of people and circumstances at a fundamental and introductory level. This includes teaching people what to believe in order to practice personal holiness as well as specific directions on how to cultivate biblical godliness in relation to issues that are common to God’s people. The distinctive feature of this series is its experiential tone. While some booklet series aim to enlighten the mind, these booklets aim to warm the affections as well. The goal is to promote communion with the triune God and to transform the entire person in thought, speech, and behavior. To this end, we intend to include a wide range of authors whom the Spirit has blessed to skillfully stir up the church to personal holiness and affection to Christ through their preaching and writing ministries.

There are few modern day preachers that are willing to speak the whole truth of scripture uncompromisingly. There's no exception here. This is a great little booklet on biblical friendship - how to develop it, what to look for in a friend, and how to maintain friendships in the faith. Highly recommended.

When a skeleton's head rolled off a dirt pile, all work came to a halt at a construction project in upstate New York. Archaeologists began excavating and found thirteen skeletons. Further investigation revealed that the bones were those of eighteenth-century African American slaves who had worked at the nearby Schuyler farm. Find out what these skeletons tell us about slavery and daily life long ago.

Forgotten Bones: Uncovering a Slave Cemetery (Nonfiction - Grades 4-8), by Lois Miner Huey

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—Readers' interest in this volume will be piqued from the stunning cover image of a 200-year-old skull. The book explains how archaeologists in Albany, NY, excavated a slave cemetery and analyzed artifacts using DNA evidence, soil testing, and historical puzzle-solving. Though the science and technology are sophisticated, the descriptions are written in plain, accessible language. The organization is easy to follow. Photographs, illustrations, and diagrams on every page bring the subject to life by clarifying visually how artifacts are examined. The author adopts an objective tone, though she doesn't avoid discussing the realities of slavery, emphasizing in the last two chapters evidence of the physical abuse, malnutrition, and disease that resulted from the brutal conditions. Readers may be surprised to discover that there was slavery in the North in the 18th century, and they will appreciate seeing how much archaeologists can learn from seemingly small details. VERDICT A solid choice for libraries that serve middle school students, this title will appeal to some would-be archaeologists and is a great addition to classrooms as well.—Amy Thurow, New Glarus School District, WI

A wonderful and informative book for young readers, geared toward middle school age or younger, Forgotten Bones is full of interesting facts. The information includes slave treatment findings, facial reconstruction and comparisons to other burial sites. The DNA studies showed where the buried slaves descended from and that in itself is worth reading the book! Great informational text!

A fascinating blend of science and history By Janet Hamilton Summary: When construction workers near Albany, New York, dug up a human skull, police, town officials, and archaeologists were all called in. The skull was determined to be over a century old. Construction was halted, and an archaeological site was set up. More skeletons were found, indicating a cemetery had been there. Since there were no markers and it was far away from the main house of the farm that had been there in the 1800’s, the archaeologists were fairly certain it had been a slave cemetery. This book looks at how scientists, historians, and artists worked together to learn the history of the people who had been buried there, as well as in two other slave cemeteries in New York City and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Using clues from the bones, DNA, and artifacts found on or near the bodies, much could be learned about the people, where they came from, what their lives were like, and even what their faces looked like. Back matter includes an author’s note, glossary, bibliography, and places to visit to learn more. 112 pages; grades 5-7.Summary: A fascinating blend of science and history, covering both the history of slavery in the northern United States, and the science of how the skeletons contributed to this knowledge.Cons: A picture of a slave being burned alive near the end of the book could be disturbing to some readers. From my blog: [...]

I made the mistake of buying the Kindle version. Usually, I have no problem with books on the ereader, but I cannot get the font on this one large enough or dark enough to read. I tried reading it on my galaxy (I have a Nook with a Kindle app) and that was awful, so was reading on the iPhone. I'm going to have to read it on my Mac laptop and, still the font is too small. I've learning for books with lots of images and colors on the pages, buy the real thing. I promise to come back and leave a review for the book. I'm looking forward to reading it, well, I was...

During the Second World War (1939-1945) Krishnamurti did not speak publicly in the United States but lived quietly in Ojai, CA. People sought him out and came to dialogue with him on many issues of the times or their own personal dilemmas. Their problems were universal human problems and each made true his statement “You are the world”. As Krishnamurti unwound the tight threads of their thinking and feeling the core or source of a concern was revealed unadorned and without blame or guilt. Krishnamurti’s recollection and documentation of these dialogues were gathered from his notebooks and compiled in this book. "There is only reality, the supreme without a second. There is only one humanity and one righteousness, and the way to its realization does not lie through any other path, through any other person save through yourself. Seek your own deliverance, and then you will deliver the world from its confusion and conflict, its sorrow and antagonism. For you are the world, and your problem is the world's problem. If you are clinging to your beliefs, to your petty gods, to your nationality, to your possessions, to your leaders, then you will create a world of confusion and conflict, of sects, of racial and religious prejudices, of economic and ideological frontiers, ever leading to separation, breeding ill will, multiplying catastrophes. One has to put aside these superficial things, these distractions, these self-deluding indulgences, and cultivate right thinking. Right thinking comes through self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is not based on any formula; but through constant awareness of our thoughts and feelings, of actions and reactions, and of all the opposites that lie within us, comes self-knowledge, from which arises right thinking, right understanding[…] In understanding oneself, there is the comprehension of the whole." - J. Krishnamurti

The World Within: You Are The Story Of Humanity, by J. Krishnamurti

About the Author Jiddu Krishnamurti lived from 1895 to 1986, and is regarded as one of the greatest philosophical and spiritual figures of the twentieth century. He was first discovered by the Theosophists on a beach in South India in 1910 at the age of 13 and was educated to be the new “World Teacher” for the ages. Then he took an extraordinary turn. In 1929, at one of the enormous annual European gatherings of the Theosophists in Holland, he announced his decision to step down from any formal role to promote him as a World Teacher, resigned as figure head of the Theosophists, and cut all ties to any notion of a religious or spiritual organization.Krishnamurti claimed no allegiance to any caste, nationality or religion and was bound by no tradition. His purpose was to set humankind unconditionally free from the destructive limitations of a conditioned mind. For nearly sixty years, he traveled the world and spoke spontaneously to large audiences until the end of his life in 1986 at the age of 90. He had no permanent home, but when not traveling, he often stayed in Ojai, California, Brockwood Park, England, and in Chennai, India. In his talks, he pointed out to people the need to transform themselves through self knowledge, by being aware of the subtleties of their thoughts and feelings in daily life, and how this movement can be observed through the mirror of relationship.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Very Disappointing By David J Harvey This book is so different than any other book I have read of Jiddu Krishnamurti that it leads me to believe that someone took far to great a liberty in making it seem current and approachable that they, in many places, changed the meaning of Krishnamurti's hyper consistent intent. There are area's in this book that seem contradictory to any other book that I have read and the language seems too flowery to be straight from Krishnamurti's mouth. I would skip this book altogether and go to First and Last Freedom, A Light Unto Oneself, Awakening of Intelligence...or any other book written prior to The World Within. A tremendous disappointment.

An Invaluable Addition By David Walker This book is an invaluable addition to the Krishnamurti literature as it consists of reports of interviews he gave during the Second World War to individuals who came seeking his help on a wide range of topics. This book predates the Commentaries on Living series, and the style and language is akin to the talks he gave at the Oak Grove in Ojai, California from 1940-1946. A Buddhist scholar once remarked to me that his teachings at this time contained some similarities to Buddhism. He makes the suggestion to his audience - and now readers - that they write down each thought as it occurs so as to slow down the mind, thus enabling each thought to be observed and understood. Such practical suggestions are missing from the later teaching. Also, he seems to go into more details to unravel each problem than he did subsequently. To use the 'wood and trees' analogy, here he seems to be examining the tree in great detail, coming upon the wood at the end of each passage. Later on it was if he were standing back, examining the wood in its entirety from the outset. It seems to me that although the essential substance of the teachings never changed from the 1930s onwards, the emphasis and style did. In the 1930s the teachings were quite philosophically complex, being concerned with such things as the individual's relationship with the environment. In the 1940s - as in this book - the emphasis is more on the importance of self-knowledge which leads to right thinking. For the rest of his life the teachings seemed to expand and deepen, whilst at the same time becoming more direct and simple. But all the way through the essence is the same: The coming upon of the timeless, the eternal.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Krishnamurti's teachings, and his approach to self-knowledge.

Biblical hermeneutics are explored using a historical paradigm. Old Testaments hermeneutics are identified and discussed. New Testament hermeneutics are likewise considered. Post-apostolic hermeneutics up to recent times are then identified and compared with the biblical patterns.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Misleading title By Matthew Jenkins A Christian friend has yet again challenged me to read a book, this time on Hermeneutics. Unfortunately, maybe, I started with this one.My initial impression was that the first pages were parodying the old-fashioned approach to books of the Bible, i.e. that they are literally true and are to be followed without question. It gradually dawned on me that this approach is, in fact, what the book consists of. It has not yet - I'm half-way through - considered any other approach, although it has dismissed 'liberal' approaches without providing any details about them. The author appears to believe all the words in the Bible to be literally true. This somewhat limits his ability to inform you if you have been educated to college level about the Bible and certain issues with its veracity; I'm not ready to be 'educated' by an author who is unaware that several if not most of Pauls' Letters are forgeries, for example, nor a person who believes that instructions to kill children actually issued from the mouth of a god rather than a long-dead Hebrew writer.I guess I will try to find a book on hermeneutics which will 'advance my thinking', as my Christian friend put it, but from the reviews I've read, it seems that they start from the premise that God was attempting to express Himself through the Bible and that one must try to work out what His intentions were. If, as is likely, the Bible is simply a collection of religious texts written by people who had no more access to God's opinions than I do, this is an intrinsically flawed approach.

I actually thought I might have been reading a sample... (That's how riveting it was).Kudos to the author for putting this foward.

I loved the way her characters came to life. she did a great job in actually letting them have a misunderstanding and letting it pass. I liked the way He went back and cared for his father at the end. She really let them be flawed and grow up. I loved this book very much and highly reccomend this book especially for a first time read of her books
