Isn't it possible to get reviews like that (by people who have not even read the book!) removed? I went and marked them all as inappropriate, because it is unfathomable to me that people decided not only was this book not worth $1, but CubeKid should be "punished" for his impetuous and irrational choice to not offer this book as KindleUnlimited. Bah!I didn't come across book 8 when it was not a KindleUnlimited offering, but if I had, I would have happily paid $1 for it. Geez, one-star-review-people--this is quality writing and if he wants to actually charge money for it, is that a crime? CubeKid, I'm sure those reviews get under your skin. How utterly unappreciative of all your hard work! Don't let them. They are the minority, I'm sure. I'd like to think most of your readers don't throw hissy fits.Okay, on to the actual book and the reason for my five star rating. CubeKid was witty, engaging in his writing and grammatically sound in book 8, which is always true, but it is especially impressive this round for cranking out such a fast story (and wow, it really was fast!). As always, my kids (Katie and Ben! ;)) loved it and I enjoyed reading it to them. Any publishing houses contact you yet? I mentioned my thoughts on this in my review on book six, and I still think that your overall story arc has excellent potential to be picked up and republished (depending on copyright infringement issues), or you might just be contacted to write something else. (Are you easy for them to contact?)Good luck, CubeKid. Steady on, and no worries--you have a gift, and it will shine through and pay off in the end. The 4.5 stars on this book is a reflection on the reviewers rather than the book, which is so interesting and unusual. Who would think so many people would get SO irate about 99 cents?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another great book by Cube Kid so get it now! By Amazon Customer Once again, Cube Kid releases a brand new book one by one. Each book is carefully edited and extremely well-written. An action packed novel of Runt and his exciting life as a villager.Runt and his best friend Stump are struggling to avoid the bullies. Then suddenly, Max gets suspended from the villager school and gets betrayed by Razberry. But suprisingly, Max becomes friends with Runt and Stump. Now it is just all three of them: Max, Runt, Stump. These three villagers now face a new problem. Another bully named Pebble. How are these three villagers going to face this "bully" issue? Find out in Cube Kid's villager series. That is what Cube Kid's villager series are based on. Im not going to write a full summary unlike most other reviewers do. Each of Cube Kid's books have well structured plots which makes Cube Kid's books page turners. I have written reviews on all of Cube Kid's books because they are really really really suspenceful. Also in the real world, Cube Kid faces a issue. A identity thief stealing Cube Kid's awesome name. I hate him/her. The identity thief is Alex Brian. He is another minecraft diary writer. Be sure to leave bad reviews on his books. Tip to readers: Do not panic if you don't know if the book was scammed or not. Cube Kid will simply notify the readers in the comments. If you are still confused, just leave a 3 star review saying who is the real Cube Kid. Better of not buying it if you are concerned about buying the right books. Luckily though, I have kindle unlimited. I am just trying to spread the word of the identity thief (even though most people know but there are still lots of new readers reading Cube Kid's epic books) because we don't want to reward a thief. DO NOT BUY BOOKS FROM THE THIEF! Recently, a few days ago (Scammer not using Cube Kid's name) copied Cube Kid's book 1 of his epic villager series. Dont buy books from him. Just leave a bad review. Cube Kid's books are edited with care. I can tell that because there are no grammatical errors nor typos. My real name is Matthew if you wanted to put my name in the book. This book is seriously 123 pages. I know that this was a awfully long review and I thank you very much taking the time to read it, so I guess I should wrap up here. Don't forget to get your copy of this great book today! :)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Totally worth the ninety-nine cents By Terry Leong Before writing snotty reviews about this book just because there's no Kindle Unlimited on it, think about what happens when your Kindle Unlimited membership finally expires. The book will not be in your library anymore. People just waste their one review to comment on the fact that this book does not have Kindle Unlimited. I mean why bother about losing just ONE DOLLAR? You know, Cube Kid didn't just write these books for the good reviews, It's his job and he writes books for a living. Seriously, Cube Kid wouldn't write these books if he is not going to gain much from all the hard work writing books (he worked all the way to 7.30am to finish this book). Now this book is really good, so don't listen to the people who wrote the six one-star reviews. It is awesome and probably the best kindle book I have read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Me and my son enjoyed it a lot. By Alastair McKinley Once again I got this book for my son and we both read this ebook. My son was elated that it was about his favorite Minecraft character and having to read The Creepers diary is like reading a diary of a kid who is having hard time coping up in school. This read is a personification of a kid who just want to excel in school, fit in the crowd and be just an ordinary kid who can showcase his talent. I actually explained to my son that like the creeper sometimes he also experience these kind of circumstances in school and all he need to do is just be himself and not to be affected and just focus on his strength and talent. I found this book more on giving moral story rather than being funny, its funny but more than a lighter note. Its a good read, my son and I enjoyed it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this is a great book! By S.A.D This is definitely the best creeper diary I have read so far. I buy books from "Diary" because I know that this author provides consistent, quality work. I know that love, care, and time goes into each one of these. Not a single book I have read from this author has been neglected or rushed. I know that I can feel proud when I buy this for my nephew because I am not the only one who can tell a difference in the quality between the majority of books out there and books from this author. My nephew's face lights up every time I tell him this author has released a new book. To me that is worth much more than the meager $0.99 I shelled out for this book, it is priceless.

“Are we there yet?” How often we’ve heard those words, begging for finality to an outing. Yet, the adventure along the way can be a road to many discoveries. The Road to Hana shows how the journey can be a much more valuable experience than simply reaching a destination. In this story, the child is the wise one who yearns to explore nature’s wonders along the route, while the adults who take her are too caught up in completing a task instead of appreciating the activity. In the end, the child helps the elders appreciate the beauty of the journey.

My parents would take my brother and I on vacation to one of the Hawaiian islands and Disneyland yearly. The Hana area of Maui has always been one of my favorite places to visit from being a child to now as an adult. The Road to Hana book is brilliantly written by Larry Gerston with beautiful illustrations by Gary Beattie. I read this book to my 2.5 year old son and he enjoyed the book tremendously. The beautiful illustrations and simplicity of the story kept him interested.*Possible Spoilers to the book below*The book is about a young girl named Gia Gabriella and her Aunt Rachel and Uncle Lee who are vacationing on the island of Maui. Gia is filled with great excitement and anticipation at the idea of their drive on 'The Road to Hana.' Aunt Rachel reminds her husband that they have a lot to accomplish today and Uncle Lee reminds both Rachel and Gia that he also has a surfing lesson that same day. Gia has learned to tell time and realized they wouldn't have enough time to stop and enjoy the drive. In the end they missed some of the interesting things on the way i.e. The Road to Hana because they were rushing. The good news is they were able to realize they were rushing and decided to take it slow and enjoy the drive back to the hotel, meaning they were able to take in the sights and enjoy things they could have missed.Reading this book made me realize:•journey over destination is more important•don't jam pack your schedules for vacations•you don't always need to make reservations•sometimes taking it slow is bestIf you do travel on The Road to Hana be sure to enjoy:•The waterfalls•The amazing views•The fruit stands along the way•Ohe'o Gulch•Black Sand beachNoelle's Notes:•Be it Hana or some other place, put the smart phone down and remember life before technology. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy the journey and never forget: Life is Beautiful!!!

She said her favorite part was the girl, Hana. I told her the girl's name was Gia, and they were going to the town Hana. I laughed when she asked me why the town had a person's name. She also said she liked the rainbow eucalyptus and the actual rainbow at the end of the story. I like the reversal in the story. It is nice to see a book portray adults learning from children. If you think about it, we could learn a lot from kids if we pay more attention.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Take time along the way By Shaun B. I am not a parent, but I have quite a few nieces and nephews. I bought these books for them because of the valuable lesson contained within the pages of "Road to Hana". We unfortunately live in an extremely fast paced society and with "push button" everything, kids and adults alike have forgotten the essence of simplicity in life. If you've ever been to Maui, you know that Hana is always referred to as a mystical place and tourists from all over sprint to get out there because of the "long trip". Many are let down because there is truly nothing in Hana other than a general store. The "Road to Hana", as Larry Gerston so elequently conveyed, is where the true riches and beauty lie. It is the ultimate example in life, that reminds us to slow down and embrace the journey because that is where the rewards and joy are held, not in the destination. Although this is a children's book, I believe many adults could gain a lot of perspective from reading it also. Thank you for bringing this story to life in such a beautiful way Mr. Gerston, it is an important message everyone can benefit from.

To Julie Morgan, my Miami vice and partner in crime. Thanks for all the adventures, and here’s to many more to come!

“You should have seen me, Zia!” Alfie said to his great-aunt. He scooted forward and leaned over the front seat of the car. Zia Donatella had just picked Alfie up from soccer, and they were parked in front of the school, waiting for Alfie’s sister, Emilia, to come out of her dance practice.

“Dimmi,” Zia said in Italian, turning in the driver’s seat to face Alfie. “Tell me.”

“Jackson and I were flying down the field, passing the ball back and forth. We had the best rhythm going. Then Jackson got blocked, but he passed and I scored a goal. It was awesome!”

Zia laughed. “Ben fatto! Well done.”

“It was only a practice game,” Alfie said. “But still! Coach Schrader was really excited about our teamwork, and I know we’re going to beat the Thunderbirds this weekend! It’s our first big game of the season, and they beat us bad last time we played, but we’re ready for them this time.”

“That’s great, Alfie,” Zia said. “It’s going to be an exciting game.”

“For sure,” Alfie said, smiling.

The passenger door opened, and Emilia slid into the backseat next to Alfie. Alfie sat back and put on his seat belt.

“Ciao, bella,” Zia said to Emilia. “How was your practice?”

Zia and Alfie listened for Emilia’s reply, but she mumbled something they couldn’t understand as she tossed her gym bag on the floor and fastened her seat belt.

Zia started the car and pulled away from the curb. They drove in silence for a while. Alfie looked out at the bright green grass and beautiful flowers on the lawns they passed. There had been a lot of rain this spring, and it seemed like everything had suddenly bloomed. Alfie glanced over at Emilia. She sat perfectly still. He could see Zia watching Emilia, too, in the rearview mirror.

“Everything okay?” Zia asked.

Alfie looked at his sister again. Even though she was a year and a few months older than him, and enjoyed reminding him of that every single day, right now she looked very small. Alfie thought she might cry. “What’s wrong?” he asked.

Emilia stared at the seat in front of her and picked at the headrest. She was definitely holding something back. Finally, it all came out in a rush. “Practice was terrible! There’s no way I’m going to make the dance team. I’m the worst one—everybody is better than me!” Emilia buried her face in her hands.

Alfie looked at her, surprised. He hadn’t seen her this upset since the time she couldn’t go to her friend’s birthday sleepover. And he’d never seen her get upset over dance—it had become her new passion, and she loved it.

“Surely that’s not true, ragazza,” Zia said in a soothing voice.

Emilia dropped her hands from her face. “It is true! There are so many girls trying out this year, and they’re all really good. They all have their routines down pat, and I’m still not even sure what I want my routine to be!”

“When are the tryouts?” Alfie asked.

“Two weeks!” Emilia cried.

“That seems like lots of time,” Alfie said. He thought he was being helpful, but Emilia gave him a look like he wasn’t.

“The worst part is that Becky has this amazing dance move. I’ve never seen anything like it. And it totally ties her routine together and makes her stand out from the rest of us.”

Alfie and Zia were quiet. Alfie wasn’t sure what else to say. He didn’t want to set Emilia off again, but Becky was her friend—it seemed like Emilia should be excited for her.

“I don’t have a special move,” Emilia continued. “And if Becky makes the team and I don’t, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

Emilia put her head in her hands again and a little squeak escaped her lips.

Alfie wanted to say something else encouraging, but he wasn’t sure what. Emilia was quiet next to him. After a few minutes, he couldn’t stand the tense silence any longer, so he decided to change the subject. “Um, what’s for dinner tonight, Zia?”

“I made some homemade ravioli today,” Zia answered.

“Yum!” Alfie said. Zia was an amazing cook and during the time she’d been staying with the Bertolizzis, she had made some of the best food Alfie had ever had.

“I just need to make a salad when we get home. Maybe you can help,” Zia said.

“Sure!” Alfie replied. Helping Zia in the kitchen had become one of his and Emilia’s favorite things. Alfie never imagined that he’d love cooking and learning new recipes as much as he did, but there was something about the way Zia described everything that made it extra special—not to mention extra magical! Alfie and Emilia had visited some incredible places all around the world thanks to Zia’s enchanted recipes. They were always eager to know where Zia’s secret ingredients might take them next.

Alfie looked over at Emilia, expecting her to be thinking the same thing, but she was still absolutely quiet. He slumped back in his seat. He hated seeing Emilia this upset and wanted to help, but he just didn’t know how.

Early Saturday afternoon, Alfie wandered to the living room, hoping to play video games for a while. His parents had rushed off to the office as soon as the breakfast dishes were done. They’d been working more than ever lately—including on the weekends. Dad had explained their tight deadlines earlier that morning, but Alfie thought he just looked tired and could use a break.

Alfie heard the music before he reached the living room and then stopped in the doorway to watch. Emilia had pushed the coffee table out of the way and was working on her dance routine. He was a little surprised by Emilia’s music choice—he thought she’d pick something a little peppier than the slow beat of this song. But her dance moves looked good. She was such a perfectionist.

Emilia stomped over to her cell phone and stopped the song. Then she noticed Alfie.

“Don’t watch!” she said.

“How come?” Alfie asked. “You look good!”

“No, I don’t! I can’t get anything right.”

Alfie didn’t understand why Emilia was being so hard on herself. He knew she was a natural dancer, and she had never doubted it before now. “But I’ve seen you do samba in two Carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro and do a hula performance in Hawaii with barely any coaching!” Alfie said, thinking about a couple of their Zia adventures.

Emilia sighed. “This is different. I have to do the routine all by myself. And everybody’s supercompetitive and really talented. I’m just not good enough.”

Emilia started the song again and glanced back at Alfie, waiting for him to leave. But Alfie stayed, anyway. Emilia’s frustration with herself continued to grow. And it looked like she was trying to copy someone else’s moves—Becky’s, Alfie supposed, but it didn’t look quite right.

Zia came into the room and stood beside him. Emilia switched off her song again.

“How about a lunch break?” Zia asked.

“Yes, please!” Alfie and Emilia said in unison. Alfie was starving, as usual, and he knew Emilia was looking for any excuse to take a break from her routine.

“Great,” Zia said.

Zia put her arm around Emilia and led her into the kitchen. Alfie followed close behind. Emilia was still quiet. “I know you’ll figure it out,” Zia told her. “Don’t get so down on yourself.”

Emilia nodded and managed a small smile.

Alfie took his usual place at the kitchen island and waited for Zia to assign him a task. Zia opened the refrigerator and pulled out honey mustard, butter, some deli meat, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and arugula. “What are we making, Zia?” he asked.

Zia then took some whole-wheat rolls out of the bread box on the counter. “We are making Cubano sandwiches with an Italian twist.”

“Cubano?” Emilia asked. “As in Cuban?”

“That’s right!” Zia answered.

“I’ve never had a Cuban sandwich before,” Alfie said. “Let alone an Italian Cuban sandwich!”

Zia laughed. “Well, you’re going to love my version.”

Zia put the cutting board on the counter and sliced each of the long wheat rolls in half horizontally. Then she pulled a couple of dill pickles out of the jar and cut those into long, thin slices, as well. Zia slid one roll toward Emilia, who stood beside her at the island, and the other to Alfie. “Spread some honey mustard on each half of the roll. Then add a slice of Swiss cheese to the bottom half.”

Once their ingredients were added, Zia piled several pieces of meat on each sandwich.

Throughout Antiquity and the Middle Ages, literature was read with the ear as much as with the eye: silent reading was the exception; audible reading, the norm. This highly original book shows that Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy--one of the most widely-read texts in Western history--aims to affect the listener through the designs of its rhythmic sound. Stephen Blackwood argues that the Consolation's metres are arranged in patterns that have a therapeutic and liturgical purpose: as a bodily mediation of the text's consolation, these rhythmic patterns enable the listener to discern the eternal in the motion of time. The Consolation of Boethius as Poetic Liturgy vividly explores how in this acoustic encounter with the text philosophy becomes a lived reality, and reading a kind of prayer.

The Consolation of Boethius as Poetic Liturgy (Oxford Early Christian Studies), by Stephen Blackwood

Review "A revolutionary handbook of philosophical pedagogy . . . Blackwood's critique offers important corrections for anybody concerned with the contemporary liberal arts."--Dionysius

"With his exquisite musical ear, Stephen Blackwood enables us to hear the metrical virtuosity of Boethius' poems and songs; and in doing so, makes audible the astonishing spiritual power and beauty of the Consolation. Boethius, in his book, tried to give us the gift of friendship; Blackwood, in his book, gives the gift of friendship back." --Elaine Scarry, Cabot Professor of Aesthetics, Harvard University

"A formidable and inspiring achievement. The book will be a valuable scholarly contribution to many current debates, not least on the role of time and embodied experience in the apprehension of spiritual truth. But more than this, it will do what it also describes and, through its exquisite rhythms and repetitions, will heal and transform the perceptions of the reader to allow them to participate in its guiding wisdom. This is no ordinary book!" --Carol Harrison, Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity, University of Oxford

"One of the cornerstones of European culture, the Consolation of Boethius is a passionate apology for his innocence, a search for true happiness, a call for a life led under the sight of God, and an amazing hymn to the imposing temple of metaphysics leading to the natural knowledge of God' s omniscience. These principles are exposed also in an extraordinary flourishing of Latin metres, analyzed by the Author in depth and in detail with regard both to their form and substance. A superb achievement of scholarly research, this book will remain an inspiring starting point in the future, in view of the vital task of reconnecting our ailing world to the ever-gushing springs of our living tradition."--Luca Obertello

"Poetic Liturgy is charitable and teacherly in its structure."--Matthew Furlong

"This is a book about how poetry can save you."--First Things

"Boethius, the prosimetrum, and the variety of classical metres are all distanced from us in different ways, and this demanding, careful, sometimes difficult, but always stimulating work is a bold and original attempt to bring closer to us (or bring us closer to) a work that the Middle Ages revered, and to show that the metres play a major part in the process of consolation."--Literature and Theology

"Dr. Blackwood's book draws on, connects, and extends, often in surprising ways, the best and most imaginative multilingual and multidisciplinary scholarship. He then completes it through his own unprecedentedly full and precisely detailed analysis of the metres and how they function to draw the embodied soul step by step to its Consolation. The interconnection of form and content in the work and the mode of their operation has never before been so fully described. This book will be indispensable to all future scholarship...Properly explaining how the Consolation must be read, and showing us the way to do it, Blackwood has produced the most reader-friendly and full-of-fun book of major scholarship known to me. The aim of poetic liturgy is salvation and Blackwood is zealously determined to open that to as many as possible. Students of philosophy, theology, spirituality, performance, and literature will all profit from it."--Wayne J. Hankey, Dalhousie University, Editor of Dionysius

"Valuable not only to the student of Boethius himself, but also to historians of music, those interested in aurality, orality, developments of literacy, the senses and memory, Neoplatonism, epistemology, and the intersection of philosophy and literature, to name only a few areas...Blackwood stands alone in his ability to draw upon and integrate references to the entire body of Boethius' writing...One will find a thoughtful, embodied reading of the Consolatio that takes seriously not only the text's materiality, but that of the author and audience as well. In doing so, The Consolation of Boethius as Poetic Liturgy illuminates the perennial popularity of the Consolatio as a text that physically acts upon its readers and has the power to transform ear, mind and soul together."-- Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"The prose in which this book is written is both precise and poetic, as befits a subject matter both technical and personal, that in turn takes us more deeply into the meters of classical poetry than most of us have ever ventured and draws on memories of family holidays when discussing the nature of recollection. It leaves us in no doubt that Boethius' message is wrapped up in his medium, and its implicit message is that the therapy Philosophy offers is available to anyone who reads or listens to the text. I suspect that many will wish to avail themselves of it."--Cambridge Review

About the Author Stephen J. Blackwood is President of Ralston College.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant & indispensable By Aaron S. Taylor I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a brilliant reading of Boethius, as well as a profound antidote to the unfortunately common tendency to focus upon the argument, and thus the prose, of the Consolation at the expense of the often tacit therapeutic purpose of the structure and acoustic qualities of the text itself, as epitomized particularly in the poetry. Although Blackwood’s analysis of Boethius’s poetics is quite technical, he goes to great lengths to make it accessible even to those with little to no knowledge of Latin or of prosody, even suggesting areas where those with less facility for or interest in the details might skip ahead without too much loss. Although explicit connections to the idea of ‘poetic liturgy’ referenced in the title are saved for the conclusion, the spiritual element of Boethius’s project is always at the center of Blackwood’s concern, and is part and parcel of some truly captivating meditation in the later chapters. Truly a unique monograph, and an essential interpretation of this great classic of Latin literature.

As an uninformed welder, I cannot summarize its brilliance at capturing the vision of eternal, divine simplicity and profound musical rhythm that Stephen illustrates with charming ease. Boethius, woefully neglected today in our flavour-of-the-minute trends and fads, allows us to stand back and catch a glimpse of something way bigger than ourselves; a cosmic universe, that, as Stephen says, is a consoling liturgy of therapy for our troubled souls. It is a welcome respite from the pablum we are bombarded with daily.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended. By G. Dunbar Blackwood's lucid mastery of the Consolation as a philosophical argument is matched here by a dense but rewarding examination of its poetic texts, and their relation to the philosophical argument. The introduction alone is a gem of its kind. Highly recommended.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Good Value; Good Book to Try By Pop Bop The Rescue Bots are four Transformers, (Chase, Heatwave, Boulder and Blades), who have been tasked by Optimus Prime to serve and protect humans. They are, respectively, a police bot, a fire bot, a construction bot, and a copter bot. This book is a collection of six stand alone books - one for each Transformer, one for Optimus Prime, (who is Optimus Primal when in T. Rex dinosaur mode), and a sixth book that lines all of the characters up in a Rescue Bots origin story. All I remembered about this whole world was that Transformers transformed from one thing into another, that some became dinosaurs, and that Optimus Prime was a good guy. Oh, and I knew that every kid in my family wanted Transformer toys for birthdays and holidays. (And I go all of the way back to when this first started in 1984. Fun fact, back then a couple of the bad guys transformed into micro-cassettes and one transformed into a cassette recorder. Ahh, memories.) Anyway, this book will help get you oriented if you're new to Transformers and will serve as a fine readable introduction to Transformers for young kids. (It really is six books bound together into one book. Paper is heavy, color is excellent, and the price is a fraction of what the six stand alones would cost.)That said, is it worth reading? Well, this is very basic stuff. It seemed pre-chapter book to me, with only two to three very brief sentences per page. It's Level One in the Little, Brown and Company "Passport to Reading" system, which means short words in simple sentence structures. And that's what you get.The interest level is high; the drawings are cartoonish, but colorful and clear. The action is on a put-out-the-fire-and-catch-a-dino level. Heroes are heroes, and there isn't any ironic detachment or sub-text. This is straight up action-packed hero stuff. The book struck me as a great way to test the waters with regard to a youngster's inclination to start reading, his interest in hero/adventure fiction, and her interest in the whole Transformers phenomenon. Even if Transformers don't end up being your reader's favorite, the book is fine as a more general trial balloon and it certainly aims to grab young readers.I was generally satisfied with the book and so would suggest it as a legit candidate for a first reader.

It has 5 stories in 1 book, which makes it convenient for my son to bring it with him when we go out, instead of lugging a few separate books to keep him entertained. The stories are easy for him to follow and at the beginning of each story there are lesson words to look out for to develop his reading skills. A great buy!Pro: Cheap, stories are kid friendly, promotes readingCons: None

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My kids love this book By Jana My kids love this book. It is basically a re-write of some of the episodes from TV. It includes all their favorite characters. It is simple enough for early readers. If your kids aren't already familiar with the Rescuebot world this might not be as interesting. I withheld a star because there isn't any new original content. Daddy get's tired of reading the same old stories over and over.

In recent years, Americans have woken up to the reality that human trafficking is not just something that happens in other countries. But what most still do not understand is that neither is it something that just happens to "other people" such as runaways or the disenfranchised. The human trafficker is no respecter of faith, education, or socioeconomic status, and even kids who are raised in solid families in middle and upper class suburbs can fall victim. Likewise, labor trafficking happens in our cities, neighborhoods, and rural areas.Through true stories and years of boots-on-the-ground experience, including at the Super Bowl, anti-trafficking expert Nita Belles teaches readers everything they need to know about human trafficking in the United States and what they can do to join the fight against it. She helps concerned parents, friends, teachers, law enforcement, government officials, and other leaders understand all forms of trafficking, identify risk factors, and take practical steps to keep their loved ones and neighbors safe from predators.

Matichuk We say, "Not in our backyard" to indicate our strong opposition to something: a property development in our neighborhood, unacceptable behaviors, a factory spewing out toxic pollution. Unfortunately there are some pretty heinous things in our backyard already, none as horrifying as human trafficking.Nina Belles is an anti-trafficking activist, managing director of In Our Backyard and the regional director of Oregonians Against Trafficking Humans. In Our Backyard gives a comprehensive overview of the horrors of human trafficking. Belles doesn't focus on just one type of trafficking. She profiles victims who are forced into prostitution (often under-aged), immigrants who are taken advantage of, factory and farm-workers, domestic help and restaurant staff. She explores how the pornography industry is used to groom and recruit victims into the sex trade. She talks about the stockholm syndrome and the reasons why victims stay with their victimizers. Belles also discusses her own work in advocacy and ways that we can get involved. I found this book helpful on a number of levels. I have had limited experience ministering to people who had been trafficked and have friends who are active in working with sexually trafficked women. Belles shines a light on some dark places. I need books like this to keep me aware of ways people I have seen may be being exploited. Some of these women and men were not helped because the people who would help, simply didn't notice. Belles helps us take notice because she points to where this is happening. Everyday. In our backyard. I also appreciate this book for the hopeful chord it struck. This is a story-rich book and many of the stories that Belles shares here are from victims who have escaped their slavery. While there is much work to be done, and all of us need to be aware of the ways people are being exploited, it is good to know that for some, the system works and people are set free. Because of the hopeful note, it is not heavy reading, even though the topic is heavy. This book appears to be a updated edition of a 2011 version of the book (though the Baker Edition makes no mention of it on its copyright page). Most of the stories and events happen before 2011, but statistical data, and descriptions of online trafficking has been updated.I give this book five stars.Note: I received the book from Baker Books in exchange for my honest review

By lovetoread The book, In Our Backyard, is a book documenting the horrors of the human and sex trafficking that occurs both in America and across the globe. This book sickened me. Reading the horrifying stories of the young men and women who are trapped in the sex industry made me realize that I am sadly unaware of the tragedies that surround me. Nita Belles does an excellent job of showing her readers how they themselves are accidentally or intentionally contributing to this monstrosity and how they can takes steps to stop. The statistics she gives in her book about the number of people who are currently involved in modern-day slavery is staggering. This cannot continue and must be stopped. I think everybody should read this as it contain such important information. We must take a stand against the evil that is modern-day slavery.*Warning: Tears were shed reading this book. *

By Hans York I’m a retired deputy sheriff & training officer in the Pacific N.W. I now do training for an anti trafficking organization. I’m constantly looking for materials to improve my presentations, as well as books or DVDs that I can suggest, that I think will help people understand the nature, scope and the wealth in sex & human trafficking. Nita Belles does this in a clear & understandable way, in “In Our Backyard”. From first hand experience, from local areas to Super Bowls, she has accounts of what she has observed. The book contains a number of references to projects & individuals working in the field, with references or contacts. I will recommend it highly to interested individuals.

For the past five years, Hayley Kincaid and her father, Andy, have been on the road, never staying long in one place as he struggles to escape the demons that have tortured him since his return from Iraq. Now they are back in the town where he grew up so Hayley can attend school. Perhaps, for the first time, Hayley can have a normal life, put aside her own painful memories, even have a relationship with Finn, the hot guy who obviously likes her but is hiding secrets of his own. Will being back home help Andy’s PTSD, or will his terrible memories drag him to the edge of hell, and drugs push him over? The Impossible Knife of Memory is Laurie Halse Anderson at her finest: compelling, surprising, and impossible to put down.

The Impossible Knife of Memory, by Laurie Halse Anderson

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Hayley is the daughter of a veteran, and his PTSD colors every aspect of their lives. After serving his country, Andy is trying to rebuild some stability for himself and his daughter, but each day is a challenge for them both. Hayley lives with the constant threat of her father harming himself or others while also dealing with feelings of abandonment after essentially losing her parental figures. She copes through snark and skepticism but begins to let her guard down when her charming, easygoing classmate, Finn, gives her a much-needed taste of normal teenage life. A relationship with Finn opens the door to the possibility of trusting again, but it's not easy. Through Hayley's tenuous search for balance, Anderson explores the complicated nature of perception and memory, and how individuals manage to carry on after experiencing the worst. Readers will be thoroughly invested in this book's nuanced cast of characters and their struggles. Hayley's relatable first-person narration is interspersed with flashbacks of Andy's brutal war experiences, providing a visceral look at his inner demons. The endearing Finn and Hayley's bubbly best friend, Gracie, add levity to the narrative, even as they, too, grapple with their own problems. With powerful themes of loyalty and forgiveness, this tightly woven story is a forthright examination of the realities of war and its aftermath on soldiers and their families. One of Anderson's strongest and most relevant works to date.—Allison Tran, Mission Viejo Library, CA

From Booklist *Starred Review* There’s a compelling theme running through Anderson’s powerful, timely novel, and it’s this: The difference between forgetting something and not remembering is big enough to drive an eighteen-wheeler through. Hayley Kincaid won’t allow herself to remember the happy times in her life, and why should she? After five years on the road with her trucker father, Andy, the two are finally staying put in her grandmother’s old house in upstate New York. But military tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan have left Andy racked by nightmares of gunfire and roadside bombs, and alcohol and drugs are his means of coping. Short, gripping chapters presented in italics appear on occasion and are told from Andy’s point-of-view as the war rages around him. As her father’s PTSD grows worse, and the past is ever present, 17-year-old Hayley assumes the role of parent. But there’s a good part of her life, too: Finn. He’s got dreams for his future, and, as Hayley lets him in to her own scary reality, she tentatively begins to imagine a future of her own. Unfortunately—or fortunately—memories have a way of catching up, and as each hits, it cuts away at Hayley’s protective bubble like a knife. This is challenging material, but in Anderson’s skilled hands, readers will find a light shining on the shadowy reality of living with someone who has lived through war—and who is still at war with himself. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: A major marketing campaign, including a national author tour, backs up this latest from multiple-award-winning Anderson. Grades 9-12. --Ann Kelley

Impossible To Put Down By Tamela Mccann Laurie Halse Anderson's The Impossible Knife of Memory has all the hallmarks of a young adult novel: boy/girl relationship, troubled parent, good friend with her own issues. If you left it at that, it would be the same old story that fills so many YA novels. Thankfully, Anderson's writing and her sense of character make this book a cut above the rest.Hayley's job is to make sure her father stays sane and doesn't hurt himself. Or at least, that's the job she's been saddled with and she doesn't know any other way of life. Her father is a veteran suffering from PTSD; as a result, when he isn't drinking or doing drugs, he's running away to try to dull the pain. This year, her eighteenth, he's taken her home to her grandmother's house and enrolled her in school (something she hasn't been attending since riding shotgun with him while he was a truck driver). Suddenly Hayley has the school officials looking at her, expecting her to do and be things she's not used to, and her father's condition is a minefield of issues. At least Hayley has a friend in Gracie and a boyfriend named Finn; there are people out there who care what happens to her. But holding it all together may end up being too much for all of them.Hayley's situation had me so angry I couldn't see straight; sadly enough, there are plenty of kids out there who must be the parent to their own parent, and her problems just keep multiplying. I watched as events spiraled out of control and became completely absorbed in Hayley's desperation as she tried to make everything work out while keeping her walls up. Anderson makes the story work without becoming too overwhelming or too neat; it would be interesting to see what happens as Hayley's life progresses. This glimpse into what a child of a PTSD vet may endure is illuminating and riveting, and Anderson remains one of the best young adult writers around.

My copy was an ARC I received from the publisher via NetGalley. If there's anything Laurie Halse Anderson can do, it's write a story where she shakes up our perception of a topic so common we just about glance over it. With date rape in Speak and eating disorders in Wintergirls, she really nailed the all-too-common topics in a way few authors can even begin to approach. With The Impossible Knife of Memory, she works to pull it off again with PTSD as the topic this time. Does it work? Well...When it comes to Hayley and the really sad life she lives with her Iraq/Afghanistan war vet father Andy, Anderson nails it and nails it HARD. Wow. The dynamic between them is very screwed up because of his PTSD and the effect it has had on Hayley's life, but they love each other dearly and you can feel it. Their ups and downs --especially his--are vivid and it makes you want to sweep them both up in your arms in hopes of making things better for them.Hayley has a well-developed character/personality, but she has a tendency to be a repugnant person. Calling everyone zombies, calling girls "baby-zombie-bitches," heckling them in her head because they dared enjoy heels,... She doesn't seem to like other girls much. Only the zombie habit sees change and while calling other girls such things, she's making feminist points about how stupid it is to blame a woman's menstrual cycle whenever she dares show emotion. It's a little jarring. What really tries to kill this novel is the unnecessary romance with a creep. Speak and Wintergirls both worked better without romances because it put the spotlight on their main characters and their issues. Here, the romance takes up a lot of the book. It doesn't feel like it because it's even mixed with Hayley's life at home with her father, but when you look back on it, you see there is a lot of romance. The boy in question, Finn? He was okay, but once he tricked Hayley into going on a date with him (he told Hayley to go cover a football game because he had a date and then showed up telling her she was his date), I started calling him John Green because that is actually something the author did to get a girl to go on a date with him. Creepy and manipulative, in my opinion. That really tainted the romance for me and he was nowhere near developed enough to make me feel even a little bit fond of him. He's rather flat. Adorable at times, but still flat. They also have a very weird school system that required an unusual amount of suspension of disbelief for a contemporary YA novel. So they have such oddly specific classes as Chinese and forensic science as part of the curriculum but have to fire the gym teachers and get rid of a lot of extracurriculars because the district is so cash-strapped? My college has a Chinese class and the teacher/handful of students have to fight each and every semester to keep it. I also find it hard to believe Hayley's homeschooling on the road from 7th to 11th grade with her father was so good that she tested into 12th grade and only struggled with math. Her father doesn't come off as the best teacher and she doesn't come off as quite that intelligent. This book is pretty sizable at 400 pages and the unnecessary romance makes it a lot longer than it probably needs to be, but it's a wonderful read nonetheless and handles PTSD in a deft way as some of Hayley's father's flashbacks are weaved into the narrative. Fans of Anderson's other novels are sure to love this one just as much--and from the looks of it, I'm merely being the black sheep again. Everyone else seems to be loving it! Go for it. There's not a whole lot to regret about it.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Unforgettable, eloquent, and intense By The Compulsive Reader Hayley and her father have lived on the run for the past six years to avoid dealing with her father’s PTSD. After an extremely bad incident, they return to their hometown so that Hayley can attend her senior year. Hayley is doing her best to keep her father’s unstable condition a secret, but as she gets closer to new guy Finn and her father sinks deeper into depression, memories of her childhood resurface and she starts to lose control of her life.Hayley’s voice is strong, sarcastic, and leaves an impression on the reader on the first page. Her anger and fear are apparent through her disdain of her fellow classmates and her reluctance to be courted by new guy Finn, but as the story moves along, Anderson builds her character and reveals glimpses of a childhood full of disappointment and few happy moments with her father. Hayley remains closed off and distant to human connection throughout most of the novel, struggling to hold her life together and protect her father. It isn’t until she has the courage and the need to open up to those she loves—and resents—that she is able save her father, and create a future for herself. Anderson’s writing, as always, is precise and eloquent, unforgettable in its honesty and intense in its exploration of emotion and memory.
