Renowned theologian John Frame sheds much-needed light on the message and method of genuinely Christian apologetics in this landmark title. He insightfully examines apologetics in terms of proof, defense, and offense and clarifies the relationships of reason, proofs, and evidences to faith, biblical authority, and the lordship of Christ. Two subjects of particular note are Frame’s fresh look at probability arguments and a stimulating investigation into the problem of evil. Some of the most valuable elements of this book are Frame’s extensive use of Scripture and his presentation of specific lines of argument. There is also a model dialogue in the concluding chapter that shows how these lines of argument work in conversation. This is an extensively redeveloped and expanded version of Frame’s previous work, Apologetics to the Glory of God.

This one requires your full attention By Don Haflich John Frame has been on the forefront of a rising tide of apologists and theologians who are turning to an apologetic method commonly called Presuppositional Apologetics. Though there are some who would amend the name to Covenantal Apologetics (K. Scott Oliphant) or Expository Apologetics (Baucham Jr.), the basic biblical tenants remain the same. I think the basis for this type of method shines most brightly in the newly revised edition of Apologetics: A Justification of True Belief.Frame starts with the banner verse of apologists everywhere, 1 Peter 3:15. 81D6IfdTTtLWhere others would point out that apologetics comes from the Greek word apologia mentioned there in verse 15, many fail to mention that the verse also calls us "sanctify Christ as Lord in our hearts". It is on that premise which Frame builds his case and his foundation for the endeavor to engage the unbeliever and the skeptic. As a contrast to the classical method, the presuppositionalist begins with the propositions set out in Romans 1, namely that mankind is in open rebellion to God and seeks to reason autonomously thus placing himself, not God, in the place of ultimate authority. The classical apologist seeks to find areas of common ground with the unbeliever and work towards convincing the skeptic towards God. They maintain that the Bible is not the best place to start, an error according to Frame. What Frame does in this volume is not to give an analysis of the method he has spent a life perfecting, he wants to build a framework (no pun intended) which the reader can use to judge arguments by. On a side note Francis Schaeffer sought to do the same thing as Frame, though he was thinking along the lines of Worldview ideas and not apologetics directly.I would wholeheartedly recommend this as a perfect place to start in the area of apologetics. It certainly should not be the only apologetics text you own but it can help to reorient your thinking towards the bible as you encounter various thoughts on truth. Along with guys like Geisler, Oliphant, Os Guiness, and Zacharias, this volume is first among equals. Get it. Soak in it. Let it transform your entire way of thinking. You will not regret doing so.Frame, John. Apologetics: A Justification of Christian Belief. Phillipsburg: P&R, 2015. 384. Print.

Great for anyone who is interested in doing serious apologetics By Chris Ho John Frame has been a strong proponent to the presuppositional apologetics. The new edition of the book hopes to make presuppositional apologetics easier to christian to understand and to pick up.Frame attempts in his first chapter to explain and make a case for presuppositional apologetics. He answers very clearly some of the common questions raised against presuppositional apologetics but also how we are to understand the terms thrown away by the critics. Frame hopes that by doing so, he would not only answer the critics, but also ensure that the critics would criticise presuppositional apologetics fairly.Although this is not an easy book to read, I have found Frame’s explanation extremely helpful at times. For example, In explaining why we cannot starting on the same premise as an unbeliever or an atheist, Frame uses the illustration a paranoid who suspects everyone who is out to kill him (i.e. wrong premise). Now no one in their right mind will ever counsel this person with the same premise, so why would we do that when it comes to apologetics? Why would we be so willing to give up our premise and take on the premise of the other person? Furthermore, unless the christian worldview is assume, there will always be contradiction in our lives that goes against any other premise. The only way that makes sense of the world is the Christian premise. An additional point on why I found this book helpful. Many books on apologetics focuses on the defence of the gospel, which is good and right. However many fail to see that apologetics can also take on an offensive approach. This is covered by Frame which shows convincingly that the task of an apologist, is not only to show the strength of his/her belief, but also to who the weakness of the other party’s belief.I also like how Frame gives an example of he shared the gospel to someone on the plane.I found that the example shows how he would approach the questions or objections an unbeliever would have towards christianity and how he employs the defence and offence of the gospel.Regarding the changes between the first and second edition, I’ve only read parts of the first edition. And based on what I’ve read (and if memory serves me right), I did not observe too many changes between the two edition. Readers will have to seek advice from other reviewers who have read both editions for more information on this.I do urge would-be readers to be persistent in reading this book. You might not find this book easy to read the first time round. But take it one step at a time, read and think through the book slowly. I think the book is aimed especially towards those who are currently studying in college or have studied at college. This will not be a walk in the park, but it will certainly help you think through apologetics slowly, thoughtfully and biblically.Rating: 4.5 / 5Disclaimer: I was given this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

In my top 5 favorite books on Christian apologetics By Shelby I ordered John Frame's Apologetics: A Justification of Christian Belief as soon as it was released. I could not put it down. Just look at the table of contents, salivate, and then read the whole thing including the appendices for yourself. The two chapters on the problem of evil are worth the price of the book. The following books are, in my opinion, the most helpful apologetics books for the beginner (In order of increasing difficulty):1. The Reason for God - Tim Keller2. Worldviews in Conflict - Ronald Nash3. Apologetics - John Frame4. Christian Apologetics - Douglas Groothuis5. Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview - Moreland/Craig

Uniformity with God's Will, by St. Alphonsus Liguori

About the Author St. Alphonsus Liguori was born in 1696 to Neapolitan nobility at Marianella, Italy. He became a widely respected lawyer after completing law school at just sixteen, but later left his practice to give his salvation more attention. Alphonsus joined the Oratory of St. Philip Neri as a seminarian and was ordained in 1726, when he was thirty. The powerful homilies he gave were known for their profound ability to convert those who had fallen away from the faith. He also founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and authored works such as The Glories of Mary, The True Spouse of Jesus Christ, Attaining Salvation, The Blessed Virgin Mary, Preparation for Death Abridged, What Will Hell Be Like?, The Twelve Steps to Holiness and Salvation, and The Way of the Cross. After being a bishop for over a decade, St. Alphonsus Liguori died on the first of August, 1787. He was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871. His feast is celebrated on August 1.

After I read this 32 page pamphlet, I bought 75 more and inserted them with the Christmas cards I sent out this past year. I wanted family and friends to read this! St. Alphonsus is the patron saint of moral theologians and this books is brilliant. To really understand the meaning and purpose of life, this book is a must. It's as if everything has become clear. I cannot recommend this booklet enough!

The third step of the 12-step programs "Turned my will and my life over to the care of God, as I understood Him" and the eleventh step states "sought through prayer and meditiation to improve my conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out". This pamphlet provides a great insight into how our will and God's will need to become one will, not a compromise of the two.The greatest lesson I learned from this pamphlet was in the second sentence of it, "The principal effect of love is to unite the wills of those who love each other is to make them will the same things". For a lot of years I thought it was a compromising of wills so that sometimes we do what I think is right and at other times what my spouse thinks is right for us.Finally, if your goal in life is to obtain some serenity, St. Alphonsus writes, "Acting according to this pattern (i.e. living out God's will for us) one not only becomes holy but also enjoys perpetual serenity in this life". I don't know about you but "perpetual serenity" sounds pretty good to me!

BROWN I recently prayed to God for something i desired all my life and God said No.I was disappointed but i was determined to continue Trusting God Now i was.more determined to know Him so as i was reading about accepting God's will i came across this pamphlet , small yet packed with so much knowledge about God's will and mine. Every single sentence says so much. I have not finished reading it because as i read i meditate on what i have learned and reflect on my life. Now i desire nothing more than to learn and trust God. He knows what's best for me. AN EXCELLENT BOOK.

As a pioneer in the production and recording of songs for worship, Asaph Borba has been teaching on worship for more than three decades throughout his native country of Brazil and in more than fifty other nations. Asaph's message is that true worship is not based in music but in the life of the worshipper. Many people think that what God desires from us is a collection of dogmas and actions—music, festivals, and celebrations—that will be exchanged for His blessings. God wants so much more than that. To the Father, the most essential thing is being rather than doing. Worship is a way of life, not a musical style. God is interested in our heart and its motivation far beyond any action or practice. Love is the language and essence of God. Worship occurs when one's faith is transformed into love. Only then do we become truthful, authentic, and transparent before the One who sees all. And that is true worship.

A guide to the phenomenal crop of prophets, cults, and utopian communities that arose in Upstate New York from 1776 to 1914. From 1776 to 1914, an amazing collection of prophets, mediums, sects, cults, utopian communities, and spiritual leaders arose in Upstate New York. Along with the best known of these, such as the Shakers, Mormons, and Spiritualists, this book explores more than forty other spiritual leaders or groups, some of them virtually unknown, but all of them fascinating. The author uncovers common threads that characterize these homegrown spiritualities, including roots in Western esoteric traditions, liberation from the psychological pressures of dogmatic Christianity, a preoccupation with sex, and involvement in the radical reform movements of the day. In addition to maps and photographs of surviving buildings and monuments, the book also features a gazetteer of sites listing 150 locations connected to these groups, which may be used as a helpful travel guide to the region. “The dean of alternative spiritual history produces one of his central and most thoughtful works in Upstate Cauldron. This book is more than a cauldron: It is a melting pot into which Joscelyn Godwin blends the diffuse and complex religious movements that once converged in Upstate New York to show how we became a modern civilization indelibly stamped by the experience of spiritual outsiders. This is both splendid history and a book of wonders in uncovering lost fragments of our world. Throw away your highlighter—because you won’t know where to stop.” — Mitch Horowitz, author of Occult America: White House Séances, Ouija Circles, Masons, and the Secret Mystic History of Our Nation “What a fascinating book! Upstate Cauldron takes a refreshing and new look at the period of time when Upstate New York was the center of the Spiritualist movement in America. Joscelyn Godwin has written a book that is very difficult to put down, introducing us to the most wonderful and exotic individuals. People like Timothy Brown, who built one of the most intricate (and most photographed) homes in Central New York with his own hands and out of his own head. Can you say ‘spiritual guidance’? And we meet Kate and Maggie Fox, who may have been America’s earliest rap stars. The fabulous Fox sisters used secret rapping sounds to convince converts that they were communicating with the ‘other world.’ Anthony Damiani was a spiritual godfather to many young people in the university city of Ithaca. He doled out his visions of wisdom on Ithaca’s main street, and when done, raced fifty miles to his job as a New York State Thruway toll taker. These are just some of the sometimes incredible, sometimes bizarre, but always interesting people at the core of Upstate’s Spiritualism history. Godwin tells the story of a little-known historical chapter of the area with insight and great liveliness. As the author myself of a half dozen books about Upstate New York, I found this book irresistible and absorbing.” — Chuck D’Imperio, author of Unknown Museums of Upstate New York: A Guide to 50 Treasures “Destined to become the definitive book on eccentric religion in this geographical area, this is a fascinating account of unusual and inventive religious figures and movements. Sure-handed, even-tempered, and wry, Joscelyn Godwin is the ideal guide, and his book is one that all readers will want to have in hand as they explore this historically rich and important region. What’s more, it is an important book for understanding a vital part of American religious history.” — Arthur Versluis, author of American Gurus: From Transcendentalism to New Age Religion

By Mark Newbold Professor Godwin has written a epoch making work on the history of religion in America that is remarkably good! Focusing on those groups that sprang from or intersected with the burned over, hallowed ground district of upstate and western New York. The sacred traditions, religious movements and leaders of these often forgotten sects are examined in rich detail. Placing the foundations of those groups in a historic perspective with the interdependent elements that lead to their development and often the appeal of these groups and the motivation of followers that affirmed the teachings. The examination of these traditions proves that America in its relatively short history has been host and home to a rich spiritual mystery tradition. The array of sects examined proves the spiritual diversity unique to this country, demonstrating that the recent cults that find fertile ground in California are neither unique to that location or of recent creation. Spiritual renegades have been with us since the earliest days.A sample list of topics examined in a book may be a disservice to that book, but in this case my desire is to provide a small insight into the myriad topics, characters, influences and traditions explored: Shakers, Quakers, Native Americans, Masonic, Andrew Jackson Davis, (a progenitor to Spiritualism and Edgar Cayce), Utopian Social experiments, Freethought, Theosophy and its influence on many people and groups, including the Oz books. Hollow Earth theorists, Elbert Hubbard, Feminism, and the Arts & Crafts movement round out the book. This study is one I personally had hoped would eventually be written, and for those students of American religious history, sociology, folk life and psychology, we have cause to celebrate with the astute guide of Joscelyn Godwin along this scenic panorama.

By Ol' Jon I believe Joscelyn Godwin writes the most interesting and valuable histories of esotericism available today. I wish I could afford all his books! This one is as fascinating as the rest, with different and profound perspectives on Joseph Smith, the Fox sisters and many others you may not have heard of. As usual, there is a superb bibliography. If you are familiar with SUNY print-on-demand books, this will be no surprise to you: the font is still slightly smaller than optimum, but not unreadable. The binding is probably adequate for moderate-term use (have your local print shop spiral-bind it for long-term use). And, best of all, a human being seems to have proofread the book, rather than just using spell check! If this book appeals to you, and you know who you are, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. I can't imagine you being disappointed.

What happened in the blue house brought me a lot of dirty looks. It also brought me my father. The looks continued till the end of summer, but my father went away again after only two hours. I really would have liked it if he stayed a little longer. Maybe at some point he would have told me that what I’d done wasn’t wrong after all, or just slightly wrong, almost right. But all that he thought, there in my grandparents’ garden, was to ask if I couldn’t have done things a little differently.

Meanwhile, my grandmother was stirring her coffee cold and my grandfather was anxiously reading the Clinton Weekly. On the back page were the words Cool Waters Tempt Young and Old and Alfred Esser Appointed Chief of Fire Department. If you looked closely, you could see that my grandfather was trembling. The headlines quivered like birch leaves in a high wind, only there was no wind that afternoon. The sun beat down on the garden chairs, and there was nothing in the sky but two or three jet trails, small flaws in the ceiling of that glowing hot day.

After stirring fifty-odd times, till we didn’t think she could stir anymore, my grandmother finally stopped moving her spoon and said with a tortured expression that she could never go back to her exercise class because the others would talk. Siggy would talk, Trudy, even Hilda, who had always given her a ride to class. But she wasn’t responsible for her granddaughter’s behavior, was she? Grandpa lowered his newspaper, and my father growled something that began with thirteen and ended with old enough. I would have liked to have grumbled something back at him, but all I said was, “How long are you going to stay?”

2

Go play with the others.”

“Grandma, they won’t talk to me.”

“Not even Robert Bauer?”

“Won’t talk to me.”

“They won’t say anything?”

“They won’t say a thing. I end up just standing there. Can I go now?”

“Even Robert?”

“Uh-huh.”

“And the rest of them? The ones who used to meet by the old tree? What was it, a maple?”

“Grandma!”

“Them too? Well then, go see Trudy. She’ll be glad to see you.”

“She’s almost seventy. What am I supposed to do with her? And it was a sycamore tree.”

“Then go to the pool.”

“I’m not going to the pool. Everyone stares at me when I go by myself.”

“Then go see Trudy. She won’t stare.”

“Maybe because she’s half-blind.”

“Mascha!”

“Grandma!”

Clinton was the most boring town in the world. I may not have seen many towns in my life, but I’m still sure of that. It was truest in the neighborhood where my grandparents lived, the place where I’d spent all my summer vacations ever since my mother had died, seven years ago. It was a subdivision where all the paths that led to the redbrick houses curved in an orderly fashion, without either weeds or people. If you were from the city, like I was, you sometimes had the feeling that a train had just pulled away in front of you and left you standing all alone on the platform. The only time you saw people was when they washed their cars or went to their golf clubs or took care of the hydrangeas in their silent front yards.

“Hi Mascha!” they would say.

Or “How’s school?”

They were as old as they were scarce, these people. They wore tinted glasses and had white hairs on their arms, and had no kids. The few families that did have kids had either lived here forever or had just moved here in the past few years and didn’t really count. At least that’s the way it sounded when my grandmother gossiped about them with her friends. The other ones did count though. The ones who had always lived here. It was just that since you never saw them on the street, they counted very quietly.

It was so quiet that the silence pounded in my ears, though sometimes there would be someone mowing the grass, back and forth and back and forth, keeping it short and tidy, but never on Sundays. And there I stood, surrounded by all this lawn-mower silence, with nothing to do and all the time in the world.

At the beginning, I liked going to my grandparents’. I liked the playground and my little bike rides and even the cookouts with the neighbors and the dry crackers they sold at the public pool.

Of course I could have spent my time reading and keeping in touch with my friends back home, but sometimes you just can’t. The letters begin to blur, and then you stare at a fly on the wall or the useless clock in the kitchen that can’t even be bothered to move its hands.

There was simply no one there who I could do anything with. The old ones were too old, the young too young, and everyone in between—the ones who were my age—didn’t want anything to do with me. There wasn’t any real reason for it, was there? When the few kids who were my age met up by the old sycamore tree or in front of the supermarket, they didn’t send me away but they didn’t pay me any attention either. It was just that I wasn’t one of them. I was an even lower form of life than someone who had recently moved there. I was invisible. They knew I would only be there for the summer. And what I was doing there, no one knew for certain, especially me.

Even so, I was outside all the time, because inside, at my grandparents’, there was nothing, nothing at all, not even a grain of dust. When I was outside, I was always in one of two places: either the blue house—but more about that later—or the playground at the edge of the neighborhood. It was mostly sand, tons of sand, with a few swings, a seesaw and a carousel. Whenever I was at the playground—and I was almost always there—I sat with my earbuds and music player on top of a little wooden fort and listened to music while four-year-olds wobbled across a hanging bridge to a slide, avoiding me.

There were definitely more exciting things in life, but there was nothing really terrible about it. From the wooden fort, you could watch the mothers squinting their mother-squints whenever their kids used sand toys that didn’t belong to them. You could see the parents smoking and talking on their cell phones while their kids quietly stuffed sand in their mouths. The only reason their children didn’t fall off the fort was because I made a point of sitting on the high spot, which had a roof but no railings. It wasn’t much of a playground, but it was something. You couldn’t expect much more from that neighborhood.

Of course I was too old for the playground. I was three times the age of kids it was meant for. My grandmother was embarrassed that I went there so often. To be seen at a playground at the age of thirteen was an obvious failure. Mascha! At your age! But that’s the way it was. At just that age, I sat there, watched the hours creep across the sand. It was there that on the first Sunday of vacation, shortly before lunch, I met Julia and Max.

3

Julia and Max Brandner were the only people under seventy in the entire neighborhood who would talk to me. Though they took their time doing it and in the end, didn’t say much. But back at the beginning, they weren’t Julia and Max yet. They were just the girl and the boy. You couldn’t tell anything more about them.

The day the girl in the yellow shirt first showed up at the playground, the weather kept changing, like it couldn’t make up its mind. I was sitting at the top of the fort and had a roof over my head, so either way was fine with me. The rain fell straight past me, and the sunshine couldn’t get in.

At first, I hardly noticed them. I had already forgotten about the yellow spot of girl that moved slowly across the sand, followed by a second, sniffling, thicker spot, almost before I even saw them. All I saw was the rain, which was bright and smelled like sand and asphalt and the wrong town. I probably wouldn’t ever have noticed them, but then, while the boy sat on the carousel and spun wildly through the pouring rain, the girl climbed up to my fort. She sat beside me, but I pretended I didn’t see her. I turned up my music and concentrated on the rain and the boy on the carousel, who had gotten completely soaked and now began to throw a small temper tantrum. He was very fat. His stomach drooped in two equal rings over the waist of his sopping-wet pants. I pictured how he would look in a class photo: grim, as if the weight of the world were on his shoulders.

The girl was staring at me. I saw this from the corner of my eye, and I didn’t like it. I could feel her eyes on my skin. The rain continued to fall. I could hear the drops through my music. Maybe it was the rain that made me so restless, but suddenly I took out my earbuds, turned to the girl and looked her straight in the face.

That face.

It was very pretty, and my first feeling was envy, envy of such a pretty face. I imagined that face at school, happily surrounded by other faces, friends everywhere, playing together at recess, getting valentines. I imagined how well-liked, how not-invisible that face must be at school. The girl had long brown hair and green eyes with golden flecks. She had no more than five freckles on her nose, and the nose beneath the freckles was small with an upturned tip. Surely, I thought, that nose must delight its parents and its relatives, its friends and the authors of its love notes.

No one had ever been delighted by my nose. You could have used a thousand words to describe it, or you could just say that it was large and hooked.

Hooked nose, garden hose!

Mascha, freak, toucan’s beak!

On some people, a nose like mine may not have stood out, but on me, it did. First of all because I was short. I also had freckles—and more than just five, a lot more. My skin was more freckles than not. When you added it all together, the nose and being short and the freckles, I wasn’t going to win any beauty contests. At least that’s what my grandmother always said.

“Awful rain, huh?”

“I’ve never seen you here before. Is that your brother over there?”

“Did you just move here? You weren’t here last summer.”

“Argh!”

“What, don’t you talk?”

“Look, see that boy over there that’s fighting with the rain? Who looks like he wants to beat up the rain? Is he your brother or not?”

And then, as if the rain, too, was fed up with that wild downpour, poof, it just stopped. The kids weren’t ready for such a sudden change, especially not the boy, who grasped on to the carousel afraid and sat there motionless, as if he would dry off more quickly if he didn’t move.

And the strange yellow girl with the pretty face who had been sitting there the whole time with just a small corner of the fort’s roof over her head suddenly realized something that I had noticed a long time ago: the left side of her shirt was soaked. The damp yellow material looked green and tired. She lifted up the sweater and began to desperately squeeze out the wet part. I glanced over at the fat boy. He was talking to two other kids, who had appeared out of nowhere. But really, he wasn’t talking to them—he was staring at the ground.

“Baby elephant!” they shouted. “Baby elephant!”

In the meantime, the girl’s shirt just wouldn’t dry, so she yanked it over her head, accidentally pulling up the undershirt she wore beneath it. For a couple of seconds, her belly showed. It was just chance that I happened to look back at her at that exact moment. It was really just the blink of an eye. Then she pulled her shirt back down, making the giant purple-brown, yellow-rimmed marks on her belly disappear.

4

There are more ways in the world to get bruises than there are types of chocolate or television shows, and if you bothered to write down each of them, it wouldn’t make the bruises go away. You can get bruises while riding your bike if you whack your leg on the pedal. You can get them in the cafeteria if someone who wants their lunch first shoves you out of the way. You get them in winter when you fall down ice-skating, and even in the night when you bang your hip into the kitchen counter on your way to the fridge in the dark. Actually, there’s not a single moment in life when these marks aren’t lurking, blue and green, yellow and brown, around the very next corner.

What I couldn’t imagine, after I first met the girl at the playground, was how these giant bruises could have landed directly on her stomach, when they clearly belonged on other parts of her body. Maybe the girl had leapt from the high dive at the pool and not seen that there was a kickboard floating directly beneath her. Or maybe she had been lying down under an apple tree and a bunch of apples fell on her stomach, though to be honest I had never heard of such a thing happening.

I wasn’t satisfied with the kickboard or the apples. There was something else the girl was hiding beneath her shirt, and even if I didn’t know exactly what it was, I sensed it was nothing good.

But know? No, I couldn’t know.

I waited for the kids to come back to the playground.

Four long days I waited.

When I saw them again, the boy and the girl, it was just like the first time: the girl sat silently on the wooden fort, and the boy spun madly on the carousel. Seen that, done that, next. But this time, it wasn’t raining.

After a while, the fat boy jumped off the carousel and trudged over to the fort. When he came over, he just stood there, and if you think they finally said something, that boy and that girl, then you would be wrong.

Again the kids made fun of him.

“Hey, fatso!”

“So, how much do elephants eat?”

They weren’t very imaginative. The kids couldn’t think of anything worse to call him than elephant. The boy did flinch while trying to scrape a hole in the side of the fort with his fingernail.

What do you do when you see someone being bullied? Dad told me that he was once on a bus when a woman was being harassed by a couple of teenagers. The woman was just sitting there all by herself, and she had a big red birthmark on her face. The whole left side was red, and these kids came up with at least twenty insults to describe it. At some point my father couldn’t stand it anymore. He got up from his seat and sat down next to the strange woman and said, “Oh, hello, how are you? So funny to run into you here of all places.” The kids laid off her, but the woman wasn’t grateful for what my father had done.

“Leave me alone!” she shouted at him.

Dad came home in a rage that evening, and a little sadder than usual, too.

“Mascha,” he said to me. “Let me tell you, it’s better not to help anyone. They don’t want it.”

It was pretty strange for him to talk that way, since he was a documentary filmmaker, and the films he made were primarily about people who rescued other people.

As for the boy at the playground, no one helped him. After all those insults, he had tears streaming from his eyes. Being silent wasn’t working out so well for him. That was the first time I heard the girl’s voice. I was shocked, really. I hadn’t expected it, but suddenly, there she was, sitting beside me, yelling at the boys.

“Don’t you talk to him about elephants!”

What’s the deal with the elephants?” I ask.

An important book for young people By Mary Kincaid This book starts with a definition: “THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM-a topic that everyone knows about but which, out of fear or a sense of discomfort, no one will discuss.”It is told backward from the end of the story and it is a powerful story as it unfolds in the retelling. The first paragraph is this one: “What happened in the blue house brought me a lot of dirty looks. It also brought me my father. The looks continued until the end of summer, but my father went away again after only two hours. I really would have liked it if he stayed a little longer. Maybe at some point he would have told me that what I’d done wasn’t wrong after all, or just slightly wrong, almost right. But all that he thought, there in my grandparents’ garden, was to ask if I couldn’t have done things a little differently.”With that opening the story unfolds as told by Mascha the main character. She horrifys the entire neighborhood by locking two children in what she calls the tiny blue house. This was her way of solving a problem that no one would talk to her about. She tried to talk to her grandparents, she called her father, and no one would help her. Her solution brought a great deal of attention to the situation that she wanted help to handle. The setting was descriptive, especially the blue house descriptions. The dialogue was realistic between the children. I would recommend this story for a more mature reader maybe even a young adult reader. The story was so well told that readers will find themselves sweating as they read it.For young people like Mascha who is thirteen it is sometimes very hard to get people to listen to you and help when you see something you know is wrong.I give this story a five out of a possible five. It was an intense story about a very young person trying to solve a problem no adult will acknowledge.

It was very heartbreaking and sad but amazing at the same time. It was almost enough to make make me cry when I read that it was an everyday thing to get punched and shoved for Julie and Max and I wondered why nobody called the police, if they were scared that the dad would beat them even more, then why couldn't the police just take the dad to jail? Anyways it was a good book.

"This powerful critique of American Christianity chronicles the spiritual pilgrimage of one man and provides a defense of the pure Gospel. This unique book is divided into two parts. First, a spiritual autobiography of the author, describing his journey from unbelief to American Evangelicalism and Campus Crusade staff work, to his true home in the Lutheran church. Secondly, a hard-hitting critique of shallow, pop-style worship and theology. This second edition contains new sections dealing with the challenges of New Atheism, Bart Ehrman and the new wave of biblical criticism."

The Defense Never Rests - Second Edition, by Craig A Parton

Review Using his skills as a trial lawyer, Craig Parton presents the evidence that corroborates the New Testament s central focus on the person and work of Jesus Christ. But the book offers even more. Parton was well-known in American Evangelical circles that often, as he insightfully points out, fixate on sanctification at the expense of justification. Thus, his book not only skillfully defends what C. S. Lewis called mere Christianity, but it also shows how Lutheran theology differs from today s Evangelicalism in a number of significant ways. --Alvin J. Schmidt, PhD Professor Emeritus of Sociology, Illinois College, Jacksonville, IllinoisSt. Peter calls us to be prepared to make a defense of the faith to those who ask for reasons. Since defense (apologia) was typically used of defending a case in court, it makes sense that good lawyers make good apologists. Cutting to the chase, Craig Parton knows the objections to Christianity and is ready with clear, concise, and convincing answers. The Defense Never Rests is a peerless introduction to the case for the Gospel. --Michael Horton J. Gresham Machen Professor of Theology Westminster Seminary California and co-host of the White Horse InnMr. Parton s positive presentation of the treasures of classical Christian theology and his fact-based defense for the truth of the Gospel are stunning. --Professor Rod Rosenbladt Concordia University, Irvine, California

About the Author Parton is a trial lawyer in California.

Great explanation on the proper use of Law and Gospel; plus the section on justification/sanctification alone was worth the cost. He also points out the errors that Evangelicals can commit.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By JDC This is a well-written apologetic that should be in every Christian's bookcase.

This book contains guidance on two important areas of family life. First, it explains how we should prepare our families for public worship. Second, it addresses the subject of prayer meetings, their importance and the scriptural warrant for them. Dr. Beeke's approach involves a sketch of the past uses of such practices and a detailed exposition, in such a way, that the reader can apply it to everyday living. This book will help a family focus the Sabbath wherein it can truly be a delight to the soul.

It's only 77 pages and I can't even wait to finish it before writing about it. Dr. Beeke has a vast knowledge of the practices and writings of the great Puritans that have gone before us. Both English and early American. He draws from their writings in wonderful ways to illustrate to us and urge upon us the importance of proper sermon hearing and corporate prayer attending. The chapter on preparing to hear a sermon is fantastic and I recommend that all Dad's read it once a week in preparation for Sunday service with their families. It's books like these that I love. They draw from deep, solid reformed theology but give practical, real and manageable(by God's grace!) principles for application in every day Christian living.

Unbelievable Book By The Reformed Reader The Family at Church: Listening to Sermons and Attending Prayer MeetingsBook ReflectionsEvery pastor or congregant at one time has prayed for revival. Where does revival begin? It begins with corporate prayer and a return to scripture. All revivals, the reformation included, begin with prayer and a return to scripture. Beeke does a service for the church by equipping everyday congregants with tools to teach them, how to listen to a sermon. Too many sermons go unheard. In The Family at Church, Beeke provides a list of things that will help any person/church prepare for revival. Beeke's advice for listening to sermons reminds me of the very actions that took place in Nehemiah 8. In Nehemiah 8 a pulpit was prepared (preparation for revival). Next the word was preached and all were attentive to it (Active listening, with the intent to understand). Not only was the word taught, but the word was explained, so that all could understand (Explanation for everyone present, including children). Finally, the people of God were gathered together as one, in spirit and in prayer. The advice that Beeke offers is not random advice, but is advice which is rooted in scripture and taught as a means to assure God's presence/blessing among his people. Anyone who is a fan of the puritans will be extremely pleased with the book. The book is filled with rich puritan quotes and stories. This book is very simple, short, and easy to understand. The book reminds me of the cliché book series title "small book, big impact." Although Beeke's book in small and simple, if applied the results will have a `major impact" within your congregation/life. I would buy several copies of the book and give them away to your congregants. Discuss this book with a small group within your church or over coffee with friends. The book is on Reformation Heritage's website currently for only $4.50! There is honestly no reason why this should not be dispersed among your congregation! Just to reiterate, if the application of this book is taken seriously, a revival among God's people is certain to erupt.Book SummaryIn Joel Beeke's The Family at Church, Beeke brings to the forefront two aspects of Christian living that are often neglected in the life of the church, listening to sermons and attending prayer meetings. It is only fitting then that the book is broken down in two parts: Listening to Sermons and Attending Prayer Meetings. Beeke begins by pointing out that we live in an age where people do not want to be challenged in regards to spirituality. People love to be challenged at home, at sporting events, or in the workplace, but they want their spirituality to be left alone and for it to be simple. Beeke calls for families start preparation for the Sabbath the night before. Families should strive to me go over the passage or a parallel passage dealing with the text for the upcoming sermon. Families should pray that their hearts, eyes, and ears will be open to hearing from God's word. Next, Beeke calls some to take notes throughout the sermon. For others Beeke admits that this could be a distraction from following the sermon. The reason for note-taking is for the purpose of discussing the sermon at a later time. Rather than hearing the sermon and going about your life, Beeke says the sermon actually begins after the pastor finishes preaching. Beeke calls for congregants to discuss the sermon after church and with their families. Discuss the sermon with other congregants throughout the week. Meditate upon the sermon in your individual devotions. Preach the sermon to yourself. Examine your life according to the commands called for in the sermon. For a reformation or revival to take place within the church, not only should our listening habits be revisited, but also our attention to prayer must be accompanied with it.Beeke in the second section of the book examines the importance of prayer meetings within the life of the church. Beeke begins by showing scriptures high regard for prayer meetings. Beeke then shows how history gives testimony to the fact that all great revivals in past have begun with the people of God coming together in prayer. After Beeke's biblical and historical analysis of prayer meetings, Beeke describes what a typical prayer meeting should look like. Beeke concludes the book by explaining why it is vital that the church take heed to his call.Publisher: Reformation TrustPublication Date: 2004Pages: 77Binding Type: PaperbackBook Grade: A

The first half explains how we can derive the most amount of blessing and practical good from preaching. After 4 very packed and thought provoking chapters, the book makes a sudden shift to talk about the importance and implementation of prayer meetings.Personal Thoughts: I thought that I would enjoy the first part of this book more than the second part. In truth, the exact opposite happened. I have experienced incredible blessing under the preaching in the past years. However, I have not enjoyed the regular company of other Christians in an intimate setting where we brings our pleas to the Lord together. The second part of the book was very instrumental in changing my opinions on the importance of the prayer meeting, and one I would like to implement. This is a very practical book on 2 important matters.Quote: "Pray for the conversion of sinners, the edification of saints, and the glorification of God's triune name. Pray for children, teenagers, and the elderly. Pray for listening ears and understanding hearts. Pray for yourself, saying, 'Lord, how real the danger is that I will not hear well! Of four kinds of hearers in the parable of the sower, only one kind heard properly. Help me, Lord, to concentrate fully on Thy Word as it comes to me, so that I may not hear the Word and yet perish. Let Thy Word have free course in my heart. Let it be accompanied with light, power and grace.' " --pg 9
