She shares specific, insightful skills that even the best communicator can benefit from. I appreciated the reminders and the things I hadn't considered before about how we communicate, as both speaker and listener. I really liked how she begins each day with a Bible verse and then she explains how to integrate that principle in our interaction with others.Get this book - you won't be disappointed!

She uses real world examples that we all can relate to in order to emphasize how to achieve positive communication skills. I love how each chapter addresses a specific skill and gives practical tips on how to develop those skills and reinforces it all with scripture. This would be a great resource for a women's bible study as there is a workbook available too!

Scott Ingram Joshua McElhaney has written an excellent book for those of us in, and those looking towards, Christian ministry as a full-time vocation. The calling of God on the life of an individual does not work the same way as a professional career or climbing the corporate ladder. Instead we are called to humble ourselves, serve anywhere we can, and honor those in leadership above us until God promotes us in His timing. Using the life of Israel's King David as his example, Joshua teaches us that our focus on the journey from cave to palace cannot be one of self-promotion. Instead it is about going deeper in our prayer life, developing our character and integrity, and growing in our relationship with the Lord through His Word and in the Holy Spirit. This will be a book I recommend to the men and women I disciple in ministry for years to come.

The influence of Zen Master Ikkyu (1394-1481) permeates the full field of medieval Japanese aesthetics. Though best known as a poet, he was central to the shaping and reshaping of practices in calligraphy, Noh theater, tea ceremony, and rock gardening, all of which now define Japan’s sense of its cultural tradition. Ikkyu is unique in Zen for letting his love of all appearance occupy him until it destroys any possibility for safety or seclusion.  In his poetry, he turns the eye of enlightenment to all phenomena: politics, pine trees, hard meditation practice, sex, wine. A lifelong outsider to religious establishments, Ikkyu nonetheless accepted Imperial command to rebuild his home temple, Daitoku-ji, destroyed in the civil wars. This Ikkyu is Clearly Better than No Ikkyu By Son This is, for most intents and purposes, the second book available to the general public of translations of the 15th century Japanese coyote poet, Ikkyu, not counting one popular book of idiosyncratic tranliterations. A brief description of what you get: 50 poems. This is better than nothing. The translators have made a curious decision to build the notes and annotation into the main text, like an introduction. So, in way, it's like Aitken's book on Basho, Zen Wave. Although, the introductions here are admittedly non-linear. Ikkyu's poetry is written in the Chinese style, which is founded on many allusions, so there is a method to this madness. Another curious decision is the refusal to translate the Japanese word furyu, which has elegant Chinese references and eremetic Japanese ones, and Ikkyu's personal reading as well. So, again, there is a method here. And precedent with such terms as the Japanese wabi sabi and Chinese wu wei. On this decision, I'm not a fan. The word stands out like sore skull, and is almost impossible to pronounce in English. Like cue, except an r instead of a c. Yes, poems can't be truly translated, but that's what you're doing. It will come to you if you silently wait. But that's neither here nor there. Overall, the translations appear sound, and reveal Ikkyu for the self-confident one in the world he is. At this moment, I prefer Stevens' Wild Ways, but that could change.

The Bible Through Jesus' Eyes By James In today's violent world it is more important than ever that we learn to read our Bibles the way Jesus read his. Michael Hardin's goal (accomplished, I think) is to show us how to do that. Many Christians today still think more like John the Baptist than like Jesus. John believed in a wrathful, retributive God, but Jesus had a relationship with a loving, forgiving Father, whom he called "Abba" (Aramaic for "father," but in the endearing sense of English "papa"). For Jesus, it was all about offering love to Abba, just as Abba offers love to the world, making his rain to fall upon both the just and the unjust. And it was about living this out by extending love to others -- even the enemy other!This redefinition of God as non-violent and non-retributive was a HUGELY radical move on Jesus' part, and something that many people in his day (and ours) did not want to hear, for the simple reason that we like a "kick-butt" God on our side (and, of course, God is always on our side, no?). Then as well as now, we create gods Hardin calls "Jansus faced," referring to the Roman god Janus who had two heads looking in opposite directions. We find this Janus faced god within the very heart of much Christian theology, which conceives of God as kind and loving, yet also as wrathful and condemning. Hardin's book is an extremely intelligent (yet layperson-friendly) critique of this Janus-faced god in the light of Jesus' teaching, life, death, and resurrection. Yes, there are texts in the Bible, especially in the Hebrew Scriptures, where this Janus faced god is proclaimed and worshipped. But Jesus didn't read his scriptures in a "flat" way, giving equal weight to every paragraph, every line, every word. Jesus had a lens, an interpretive grid, through which he read his Bible, which Hardin carefully fleshes out, so that those who wish to follow Jesus can be assured that they are doing so. As Hardin says, if we do not begin with Jesus, we will not end with him.Hardin shows how Christianity has been largely driven since Constantine by a "sacrifical" understanding of God (that God desires and requires sacrifice, that in order for cosmic balance to be restored and maintained someone has to die). He deconstructs sacrificial Christianity based on the groundbreaking work of Rene Girard, and shows how this kind of deeply ingrained sacrifical thinking distorts our reading of biblical texts. Christians have too long been driven by the sacrifical paradigm, Hardin says. It's time that they allow themselves to be driven by Jesus.

Dyer This book does an excellent job of underscoring the fact that Jesus the Christ is the sum-total of Christian theology. Jesus is the story and the only story that Christians are to be telling. I am Mennonite and we believe firmly that Jesus is the Lord we are to be worshiping and following in our everyday lives. Michael Hardin gives a very fine description of what discipleship under Jesus looks like.This book is well worth the time and study that it deserves.

Reasons for Remaining Christian By Lee Cheek If you have sensed that politics (through the ages) has distorted the message of Christianity but do not have a theological education that could provide you with a compelling, non-apologetic, intellectually substantial reason for remaining a Christian, then you will find it in Michael Hardin's excellent book The Jesus Driven Life. I am a lay person in the Episcopal Church who has mentored the fine Education for Ministry course for three years. However, it was not until I became acquainted with the anthropology of Rene Girard that I was able to understand the "why" of Jesus. But I wondered how this information could this be introduced and organized for the layperson. Hardin's book has the makings of a fine course and I look forward to the DVDs. I have recommended this book to my rector and bishop and will continue to recommend it to Christian formation educators.

The humor, the realities of pastoral ministry, the realness of the characters in ministry...(I'm a pastor's wife, btw.)The totally inspiring stuff about prayer, truth spoken, teamwork in ministry.The romance, which I liked especially because of who hope was. It felt realistic, not suddenly developed and utterly fictional.Original and unique. I've read this author several times now. Her others have been good, but this is my favorite so far.One more thing...I was a little nervous when reading the promo blurb that this would be some non-realistic marriage of convenience story. It traveled a better path. You'll have to read it yourself to find out more! :)

By Rob Natiuk This author has published at least 8 books like this one -- perfect for pre-schoolers and first-graders because they are colorful and have endearing characters. Such as Goldie the Unicorn.The author has a warm style, as if she was with you telling the story. "Let me tell you a story about a small fairy named Angie and her best friend, Goldie the unicorn." That along with the colorful illustrations takes me, and I'm sure younger listeners, into a dream world filled with most lovely creatures. But there is also a touch of sadness, such as Goldie getting lost and can't find her family.

Tiny is as small as a 'chicken' and wants to be larger so other will play with her. In this adventure, Tiny meets a duckling who plays with her; a gnome who eats lunch with her and also a Princess who introduces her to the Great Pink Fairy! Tiny has quite the trip in a few pages.I like this book as it emphasizes the fact to be nice to one another and accept others as they are. Most important, however, is to be proud of what you are and love yourself.The drawings are bright and colorful and well done. The author has written this book for ages 3 - 12 and P - 6.Most highly recommended for learning a few of the lessons that life offers along the way.

Nice story and moral about how to honor your own qualities and be proud of who you are. Good moral for kids.

It is by far the worst one I've ever bought. The quality/difficulty of these books has been going down over the past few years, but this one is particularly awful. You don't have to "find" anything because they're all in your face. It's getting returned. Don't waste your money.

He received it for Christmas BUT he liked it so much I went on Amazon to buy his best friend this book as part of his birthday gift. He turned 4! We received it in the mail and my son wanted to look through it because it looked a bit indifferent. . It was paper but had more pages than the board book did, maybe 3 additional pages.It's not that hard for a 3-4 year old to find the pups in the various pages but they enjoy it anyway even id they know where they are. The last page provides more activities for them to find in past pages which is a big harder than the normal pages.Overall, they could make it a bit harder for kids to find the items but if you do the actives in the back page, it makes up for the other pages. It comes down to how much your kid loves Paw Patrol. Mine does so he was very happy but I wish I had purchased the board book for a bit more in price.

We have the Frozen look-n-find, which I even had trouble with in some of the later pages! This one I think is purposely made for a bit of a younger reader. My daughter is almost 4 and when she finished she said "that was way better than the Frozen one"!
