1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My review of the first three Philemon books By Stuart Dunn Frédéric Othon Théodore Aristidès, but more commonly known as Fred, was a French cartoonist best known for his series called Philemon. Shortly before his death in 2013, Fred finished volume 16 of this popular series and effectively brought the series to a close. One year after his death, TOON Books started translating these titles to English. To date, there are three published - 1. Cast Away on the Letter A, The Wild Piano, and The Suspended Castle. Allow me to tell you a little bit about the series and each of the books individually.Philemon is a French teenager whose best friend is a donkey named Anatole. He is also a bit lazy, a bit of a dreamer, and has a dad who gets easily aggravated at the "tall stories" that Philemon tells him. The first story Cast Away on the Letter A begins with Philemon falling down a well and landing on a beach. It is here where he met a well-digger named Bartholomew and finds out that he is on the island. The island is the letter A and part of the words on the map "ATLANTIC OCEAN." Who knew that those words on the map were actual places. :) He also encounters a centaur while on this particular adventure. Later in the adventure, Bartholomew and Philemon enter a ship in a bottle and sail to the other A in Atlantic where they enter into a labyrinth. Philemon loses Bartholomew and his wandering around, he escapes back to his home.In The Wild Piano, Philemon's dad thinks he's crazy, but his Uncle Felix remembers Bartholomew and is stunned to learn that Philemon found him. However, Uncle Felix seems scared to talk about the letter A island. He also fancies himself a bit of a magician, and he decides to help Philemon return and try and save Bartholomew. While there, Philemon breaks a law and must perform a concert on a wild piano. This ends up looking like a mix of concert and bull fight. Because he was able to defeat the piano, he is rewarded with an elevator ride. On this ride, he finds Bartholomew and they try to escape. While trying to escape, they encounter a giant man (perhaps Gulliver of Gulliver's Travels). Eventually, they do escape through a wardrobe (C.S. Lewis anyone?), which leads them back to Uncle Felix's room.In The Suspended Castle Bartholomew is sad to be back in his village. Having been gone 40 years, he feels completely out of place. He doesn't like the clothes he wears. He misses his castle and his centaur butler. Uncle Felix decides to help him return, but Bartholomew forgets his hat when leaving. This causes Philemon to chase after him. This time they end up on the letter I. They try to make it back to the letter A and Bartholomew's castle, but our captured by a captain with a boat shaped like a whale (thoughts of Melville come to mind). While Bartholomew and Philemon were rowing on the whale boat, pelican-shaped boats flying in the sky tried to capture the whale. They were only able to capture Bartholomew and Philemon though, which they took to a castle suspended by a rope. They were then mistaken as "cutters of the rope," whom the people had been awaiting for 2,000 years. Philemon and Bartholomew cut the rope (improperly) and the castle sank with everyone escaping except the captain who went down with his castle. Philemon and Bartholomew also make it back home. The first three books in the Philemon series are absurdly delightful. The illustrations are crude, but the number of literary references are astounding. If you are looking for a trip through strange lands, then you'll enjoy this series. I think it's more geared toward teenagers, but adults might find some pleasure in it as well.

Wu Zhao (624–705), better known as Wu Zetian or Empress Wu, is the only woman to have ruled China as emperor over the course of its 5,000-year history. How did she―in a predominantly patriarchal and androcentric society―ascend the dragon throne? Exploring a mystery that has confounded scholars for centuries, this multifaceted history suggests that China's rich pantheon of female divinities and eminent women played an integral part in the construction of Wu Zhao's sovereignty.

Wu Zhao deftly deployed language, symbol, and ideology to harness the cultural resonance, maternal force, divine energy, and historical weight of Buddhist devis, Confucian exemplars, Daoist immortals, and mythic goddesses, establishing legitimacy within and beyond the confines of Confucian ideology. Tapping into powerful subterranean reservoirs of female power, Wu Zhao built a pantheon of female divinities carefully calibrated to meet her needs at court. Her pageant was promoted in scripted rhetoric, reinforced through poetry, celebrated in theatrical productions, and inscribed on steles.

Rendered with deft political acumen and aesthetic flair, these affiliations significantly enhanced Wu Zhao's authority and cast her as the human vessel through which the pantheon's divine energy flowed. Her strategy is a model of political brilliance and proof that medieval Chinese women enjoyed a more complex social status than previously known.

Emperor Wu Zhao and Her Pantheon of Devis, Divinities, and Dynastic Mothers (The Sheng Yen Series in Chinese Buddhist Studies), by N. Henry Rothschild

Review

This is a fascinating study of the only female emperor in the whole of Chinese history. By delving deeply into the religious underpinnings of Wu Zetian's power in a way that not even the most dedicated approach to her utilization of Buddhist scriptures and doctrines alone could manage, this investigation illuminates the unique quality of Wu Zetian's reign far more effectively than previous studies. Emperor Wu Zhao and Her Pantheon of Devis, Divinities, and Dynastic Mothers is a solid piece of well-documented scholarship, yet it is vibrant and entertaining throughout.

(Victor H. Mair, University of Pennsylvania)

Wu Zhao is one of world history's most fascinating figures and the most powerful woman in China's long past. N. Harry Rothschild sheds new light on the ideological underpinnings of Wu Zhao's rise to power and unprecedented female dynasty. The Buddhist prophecies justifying her rule are well known, but Rothschild uncovers a more complex story that includes wise mothers and potent goddesses drawn from the Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist traditions. In lively prose, Rothschild reveals an ever-evolving pantheon of female paragons that Wu Zhao deployed strategically before and after claiming the throne.

(Jonathan Karam Skaff, author of Sui-Tang China and Its Turko-Mongol Neighbors)

With painstaking research, unerring insights, rich prose, and a sense of humor, Rothschild lavishly illustrates the political genius of Wu Zhao, China's only female emperor. Indicating her keen political instincts and expansive knowledge of China's cultural traditions, Rothschild adeptly delineates how, over the span of her fifty-year rule, Wu Zhao selectively made use of different goddesses and heroines to match the specific circumstances of her career's twists and turns.

(Keith N. Knapp, The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina)

This book is a tour de force of textual analysis and historical detective work that leaves previous sensationalistic accounts of Wu Zhao's rise to power in the dust.

(Suzanne Cahill, University of California, San Diego)

Exhaustively researched...

(Tricycle)

What an original and remarkable story N. Harry Rothschild tells―of ancestors, power, and leadership. How a woman in an ancient, male-dominated culture employed art and poetry, history and mythology, and ritual and violence to create an ancestral line that consolidated her own gender-bending authority; the story of how Empress Wu invented herself as China's sole female ruler, the Emperor Wu Zhao.

(Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism)

A lively and captivating narrative that is sure to please both specialist and student alike.... Rothschild deserves tremendous applause.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Interesting Read By Lauralee Wu Zhao became China’s first and only empress. She rose from obscurity to become the emperor much to the shock of the country. It was evident that she was a political genius because she not only rose to the throne but also had a stable reign. One of the ways that she used her political acumen was through religion. She created a pantheon of female deities, and used them to help legitimize her reign. The author then divides the book into three faiths- Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. In each chapter, he writes about the specific deity and how she uses them to her advantage. While I was hoping to learn more about the life of Wu, I did find this book to be particularly interesting. I liked learning about these female goddesses, and I could see how they personally attracted Wu when she was empress and how she later used them as Emperor. I also liked as Zhao represented herself as these goddesses by having her as model for the goddess in the Buddhist temples. I also like how she also used poetry to help accomplish her goal.Overall, this book was about how Wu used religion to rise to the throne. This book is not really comprehensive, and it for scholars who know more about the history, politics, and religion of the Tang era, and the emperor Wu. Still it was interesting in how the myths of the goddesses helped Wu rise to the throne when the idea of a woman ascending the throne held much opposition. This book only covers a small part of how Wu rose to power and how she stabilized her reign, and it is a small glimpse of the complexities of the religion in the reign. This was great introduction into the three faiths that I really do not know a thing about until I read this. It is obvious that the author loves the Chinese emperor, and that he is fascinated by how she accomplished this daunting task. I think that is one of the reasons why he decided to study her further. However, this book left me wanting to know more about the life of Wu Zhao. This book is for those that have a deep knowledge in religion, history, and politics for I believe this was more for academic scholars and not for the general reader.(Note: I read an ARC copy of this book in courtesy of Netgalley.)

By Angela I enjoyed this sweet unicorn. short story that taught that it's much. better to think more of other's needs than your own. The. author also had some very beautiful illustrations as well! I therefore recommend this ebook especially for kids between the ages of 4-8 and who also enjoys sweet animal stories as well. For all these reasons this is why I feel that this ebook needs a five star rating! I received this clean reads ebook for free and in exchange I have finished writing an honest review. Super job Mary K.! By Angela

I did notice two small errors in the writing. There was the word a missed, and an apostrophe was missed in one place. I didn't notice any other errors, but I was not really intentionally looking for errors, I just kinda noticed them. Other than that it was a great book! Thank you for writing it! The only reason I probably noticed the errors is because I write books too.

Dracul (Dragon Eye Book 5), by Finley Aaron

About the Author Finley Aaron grew up reading books of all sorts and believes the best stories are in the ones in which things happen. And the best sorts of things to happen in books are the very things that so rarely happen in real life, for they christen the doldrums of our days with that spark of life that reminds us things can happen to us, too, if we are trained and ready when the adventures come to meet us. Finley likes to laugh, and doesn’t mind at all if readers laugh while reading these books, for in fact they were written with an impish, barely-suppressed humor that peeks out and winks at odd moments. If you’re paying attention you’ll spot them before they duck away.

If you like romance and you like dragons you will love these books!***Yes, I do know It only released today - but I pre-ordered and when it showed up in my kindle just before bed last night - Who could resist? By Amazon Customer I absolutely LOVED this one, ugh, I'll be honest, I nearly cried. If a book can make me feel for the characters, then it's an amazing book!I couldn't stop reading this, I love the way it's written(how they're all written)--you feel like you are in the mind of the main character or standing right next to them because it's as though they're talking to you, like when Rilla says "Do yourself a favor, okay? Never google rabies. Just don't." It's like I'm part of the story, it's great, I feel included. So far this one is my favorite and I even went back and re-read Vixen after, which I still love, but I think Dracul takes the cake.So excited for Basilisk!!

Elizabeth So, despite my previously scathing reviews of this author's series, Dracul was amazing.Don't get me wrong. I stand by my assessments of the previous books in the series... "Phoenix" was just downright awful. But this one, I almost couldn't put down.It was much like the first book, where the romance was definitely an objective, but it wasn't thrown into my face on every page. I knew the main character, Rilla, wanted, in some way, to find a mate, but she wasn't obsessed with it, as Felix was in "Phoenix." The romance came naturally, and didn't seem forced at all. I was actually rooting for her and the main male character, Constantine, to get together in the end, which is the first time I've done that since the first book. And the story is so cool. The author's take on vampires is unique -- far from the stale cliches I usually see. I'm not normally a 'vampire' person, but this story won me over.I have to take off a star, though. Near the end of the book, the author goes right back to the old standby of "Here's another male dragon, so you should go make babies with it." Fortunately, it doesn't spoil the entire book.UNFORTUNATELY, though, with as intricately tied as all the novels in this series are, you can't actually skip "Hydra," "Phoenix," and "Vixen" just to get to this one. There's a plot point in Phoenix, especially, that must be read in order to understand what's going on in part of this novel. Anyway, if you can get through the middle three, this one is definitely worth the read!

An unusual paranormal read By Whispering Stories **I received a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review**My rating 3.5 stars - but Amazon don't do half stars. After having a surreal dream on her 18th birthday in which she is wandering through a desolate house, Amanda wakes up confused and wondering why it all felt so real.To celebrate her birthday, her two best friends take her on a surprise trip to the lake to have a private girly party, however they are not alone as two strangers are watching them from afar, noticed only by Hanna. After their party, Hanna seems to be acting strangely and doesn’t want Amanda to be left alone, unless she is at home, and tells her not to invite anyone in to her house. If it’s not Hanna accompanying her to places, it’s her quiet but lovely brother, Craig.Something is wrong and Amanda wants answers, but no one seems to want to tell her the truth. Will she every discover what changed on the day of her 18th birthday?"The Eternity Road" is a YA Paranormal story written by a début novelist. The premise of the book, a young woman with secrets so hidden that even she doesn’t know about them, thrown amongst a group of immortal hunters, she knows nothing about, is exciting. Add in the Vampires who need her and a few witches along the way and this is the perfect book for paranormal fans.I really enjoyed the book up until it started having flashbacks. Some of them, I’ll admit, were needed as the book wouldn’t have worked without them. Some however, really didn’t add anything to the story, and in fact I actually found that they distracted the focus away from the main plot. I didn’t really need to know all about the hunters’ past lives, and how and why they became hunters. This kind of information is best left either out completely, or written in a prequel. The main characters all had their own voices and characteristics, and all added depth to the story in their own special way. I particularly liked Ruben as this was a ‘man’ who had been around for a long time, and turns out he just wanted someone to love. He thinks that he may have found that perfect person, surprising even himself!Amanda is a strong, sassy young woman, but I struggled to connect with her. I can normally visualise characters in my head when I’m reading, but I couldn’t with Amanda, which was a shame as the story was all about her.The book ends without fully revealing all of the answers, but with a ‘To Be Continued’ as the final sentence, I’m sure that book two will fill you in on them.If you’re in to YA Paranormal books then this is something slightly different to your average novel. A good book which I was eager to read, but it didn’t hold me captivated, unfortunately – I would still need to read book two though, as I have many questions that I would like answering.Reviewed by Stacey on Whispering Stories Book Blog

By Danielle *** Received this as a free book for an honest review***First I must say, I don't generally read G rated novels, and seldom do I read YA, but I love the paranormal so I agreed to read it. That being said, I rated according to the book, the writing, and how I feel my teens would also fare with this book. Now of days with the paranormal being very sexualized, its great to be able to give young girls/boys something to read without worrying about content.Book ReviewEternity Roadby Lana Melyan4.8 StarsYoung Adult book with zero sensual content, great for young teens also! This book, I will not tell a lie, was a little rough the first half of the first chapter. It was choppy and felt forced to get to the point and destination of where it needed to be. Basically was trying to put a minor back ground, although needed, was hard to get through when you read as often as I do. This is why I took off a tiny bit. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised by the end of that first chapter that it became more fluid and easy to read. The dialog was much easier to read, and although young (teenage language) it had substance that was interesting. The story was continuous and allowed for a faster paced read. There was always something going on and I genuinely liked that.Story begins with a young girl who is dreaming vivid dreams. She is in this house that is empty that she calls the “dusty house”. Amanda’s mother died, it was just her, her dad and her caretaker. She had two best friends, Hanna and Kimberly, who she did everything with. Hanna’s ‘brother’ Craig was the guy she had an impossible crush on, but knew there was just no chance for her because he was just very distant although caring. It wasn’t long into the story strange things began to happen, vampires became real, people were able to heal at impossible speeds. The vampires want something from her…but do the people she cares about the most also want something from her? And if so, are they even her real friends, or just being kind to get something from her?The story unfolds in different times. Three different times to be exact, but it is done in a way that was easy to follow. It doesn’t jump all over the place. If you don’t like cliff hangers, this isn’t the book for you lol because it ends with the story beginning a new chapter of someones life. It’s like knowing a person just graduated medical school and received their residency paperwork. Ok, what’s next lol…but I like cliff hangers so I really liked her placement. Was a perfect spot to end the book. All in all, if a young teen / young adult is looking for a good book, this is a great start to a series. If you are looking for high romance, look elsewhere, but there is some kindling romance and its G. There is a minor kissing moment. All in all great beginning for this authors series!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it sometimes felt like there was over exaggeration on how people were talking ... By Samantha Received free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This was a very interesting read. There was a lot of information to absorb as well, from the origin to the backstory of what’s going on.The way it was written, it sometimes felt like there was over exaggeration on how people were talking and walking. Example, a girl was walking with enough force that it looked like she was kicking people. That just makes me think she looked like she was marching military style or she was rearing her legs back and actually kicking. When there wasn’t over exaggeration though, the writing was good.In the beginning there was a little high school drama and it was a little slow to get going but when the drama stopped and the plot picked up, I was hooked, especially with one character that I had a bad feeling about.I really loved the fact that the author brought the readers into the past every now and again and I really never saw the ending coming. This ending is something that even if it was spoiled, I would still be surprised at how this all turned out.The cover is gorgeous, it’s very eye catching. I know if I saw this in a store, I’d look back at it and read the back cover so you see, it’s kind of a double edged sword on judging a book by its cover. The pace is a little slow but the plot takes some explaining so it’s rather appropriate and the characters take a little time to connect as well, at least for me, but it is emotional when you do connect.I would recommend this to people wanting to get into the vampire genre or are fans of The Vampire Diaries.

Here is the complete first edition of The Science of Mind. For the careful practitioner this is the preferred edition, as later editions lacked the power and focus of this edition and were simply less readable. Here you will find six lessons and countless affirmations that will help you unlock the power of your mind and find higher truths. You won¿t find a guide to the science of the mind that is clearer and easier to use. With the power of right thinking you will find that a new, better world awaits you! Earnest Shurtleff Holmes was the founder of the Church of Religious Science. Religious Science, like many New Thought faiths, emphasizes positive thinking, influence of circumstances through mental processes, recognition of a creative energy source and of natural law. Holmes had an immense influence on New Age beliefs, particularly his core philosophy that we create our own reality.

The Science of Mind, by Ernest Shurtleff Holmes

Amazon.com Review The Science of the Mind was originally published in 1926 by the founder of the worldwide Religious Science movement. It was completely revised in 1938 by Ernest Holmes and Maude Allison Latham; this 1997 edition is the 1938 version with an added introduction by Jean Houston and a one-year study program that breaks the weighty tome into digestible bits. Using creative techniques, Holmes guides the student in easy-to-follow steps toward mastering the powers of the mind to find purpose in life. His explanations of how to pray and meditate, heal oneself spiritually, find self confidence, and express love have helped millions change their lives for the better. The Science of Mind is one of those spiritual classics that belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who wishes a life for themselves free of compulsion and negativity. --P. Randall Cohan

Review "The first forty pages or so of this voluminous work laid out the mind-over-matter philosophy of California mystic Ernest Holmes, which became a major influence on New Age spirituality. Holmes was a broad thinker and his work reflects a wide variety of influences, from Emerson to Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy. Holmes never became widely known but influenced many who did, such as Norman Vincent Peale. His books could be found in the libraries of George Lucas, Elvis Presley, and scholar of myth Joseph Campbell."--TIME magazine

From the Back Cover The Science of Mind, among the most respected spiritual books of our century, contains the fundamentals of Holmes's teachings and is a primary resource used by teaching centers and spiritual healers worldwide. The universal principles in this powerful book apply to people of all spiritual backgrounds as they describe the road to freedom attainable through the intelligent use of Nature's forces and laws to allow God - the creative power of love, freedom, and humanity - to work through them. Holmes seems to have anticipated the future in creativity and personal growth, and his book's goal is to suggest how you may pilot your entire life. Detailing the amazing, subtle powers of the mind, and how you can use them, it explains many of the basic truths known to the enlightened of all ages, and distills them to primary elements, easily understood.

I have been a student of Science of Mind for seven years and the teachings of Ernest Holmes have changed my life by helping me change my way of thinking. This is not a "self help" book, nor is science of mind a religion; it is a way of life. It makes no difference what your beliefs are, you will find that this book touches your soul. This book is not a one time read; you use it daily, over and over. Take your time reading it in order to conceptualize the material and enjoy your journey!

I had already been studying spirituality and metaphysics for a few years prior and got the book from the advice of a friend.Let me get this straight from the outset, this was not an easy read, at first. The style it was written in felt awkward and cumbersome. (I usually like reading my books outloud as it tends to have a deeper impact on me as the reader) I actually felt a little intimidated by Holmes' style so I put it aside and actually used it to hold my door open when my house got drafty and blew the doors closed.A few years later I started going to a Religious Science Church and I, rather innocently, asked the minister if the Science of Mind book was in any way related to Religious Science and he said, "Yes, SOM is the text we use for all of our classwork..."So I rushed home and began to read it again and somehow during those three years that book changed into something incredibly breathtaking. I was and I am still amazed at the depth it was written. If anyone says that it's just more of the same 'ol mind stuff, tell the person 'thank-you very much' and then walk away. I am a firm believer that if words that point to a Higher Level of awareness don't excite you in some way then you really don't fully understand what you're reading.Just to realize with 'real eyes' that I am an aspect of the Whole leaves me feeling so incredibly wonderful; that the Infinite loves me enough to create and re-create me anew in each and every moment of creation is humbling and makes me understand on a deeper level what Jesus meant when he said, "I, of myself can do nothing...it is not me, but the Father within that doeth the works..."We, in our ignorance as well as our arrogance like to think that we can do things without God, but can we? Do you know how to beat your own heart, or heal a wound, or take the food that you ate today and make it into bone, and muscle, and living tissue? I sure don't. I KNOW that the Innermost God and the Outermost God is One God and and that this Divine Intelligence is guiding and directing every atom of creation through the Power of Love and it is this same power that I use in each and every moment; it is this Power that I can consciously use to make my life better and better. Not that I can change the True Reality of my life, but I can become more and more aligned with what Spirit has ALREADY given me to EXPRESS, EXTEND, and EXPERIENCE.This book is brilliant in so many wonderful ways. I now own five copies of this book and one of them is a beautiful leatherbound edition with goldleafing that some very dear friends gave to me one Christmas.I am now a licensed Religious Science Practitioner in the city of Covina, California and I get the opportunity to practice this wonderful philosophy in my daily life as well as give practitioner sessions and teach classes based on this teaching. No, I'm not a perfect human being. I still make mistakes and do a lot of things wrong, but I know deep within that the One God that is Love Itself that is within and around me now has never been hurt or damaged in any way and at any time I can go within to that "secret place of the Most High" and realign my thoughts once again to the thoughts of God...thoughts of Love...thoughts of Peace...thoughts of Abundance, etc.Do not let yourself be intimidated by this book like I first was, give it a chance and I promise you, your life will transform itself in some way because of it.Know that you are blessed and a blessing.John P. Morgan, RScP

By Barbara Rose I have read so many books, nearly 2,000 that have had a tremendous influence on my life, and still do to this day. It was during the darkest period of my life that I took nearly all of the money I had to my name and bought The Science of Mind.Within 8 weeks of reading (and highlighting) this profound book from cover to cover my entire life did a complete turnaround. What Ernest Holmes drilled into my mind was EXACTLY how the laws of this universe work with respect to manifestation. The universe is completely neutral! Whatever you focus on and believe is exactly what you WILL receive! Remember this! I feel such deep gratitude for Ernest Holmes for writing this book because of the immeasurable difference it has made in my life.Highly recommended from my heart,Barbara Rose, author of "Stop Being the String Along: A Relationship Guide to Being THE ONE" and 'If God Was Like Man'Editor of inspire! magazine

By karycter This is one of the best Christian books I have ever read…its so good, I would comfortably recommend it to people who don't identify as being Christian because it is interesting, honest, funny, deep, relatable, well-written, and unique enough to appeal to pretty much anyone. I read the whole thing in one sitting (200 pages in 3 hours.) I will admit that going from the first 3/4 which was basically a very well-written, easy to follow and visualize narrative to the last 1/4 which was more of a helpful spiritual teaching required a bit of a switch mentally. Her advice and insight at the end is very good, but it is also deep. The first part goes so fast, it's like careening down a hill as you are pulling on the e break while the ending is like a quiet, thoughtful walk at a slight incline. Both are good, but very different. Feel free to take your time on the last part instead of trying to keep the pace of the first. It will be worth it.

By robert The God of my Parents brings a level of empowerment that has widely been overlooked and ignored by most of the church. There has existed a gap between those who have taken to Christianity easily and those whose lives have been far more complex and difficult to reconcile within the scope of the fundamental evangelic experience. Liz G Flaherty takes us on a journey with her that is rich with both an inherited legacy of life with God and the rawness of the confusion of an imperfect life and the emotions that come along with it.If you are someone who has ever experienced sexual identity issues, same sex attraction, addiction, alcoholism and anxiety issues, you need to read this book. Often the greatest solutions to these issues is not a list of self help keys or 10 ways to defeat sin in your life books but rather the sincere and genuine story of someone’s life. The human experience meeting with the Divine and the telling of a relatable testimony of God can shatter bondage and start the process of transformation where a list of principles, though helpful, will often fail. This book is packed with such power and is inspiring even to Christians who are not dealing with such things but seek to know and understand the plight of so many in our culture that come from various spiritual backgrounds. As a born again Christian who was not raised in the church, I found Liz’s story shocking, hilarious, sad and altogether powerful. It opened my eyes to the people all around us who have untold stories. My hope is that many Christians would resist being satisfied with knowing people by the hello’s and how are you’s of social church and begin to ask those around them, “Can I hear your story?” You may just discover a Liz whose story has not been told yet and an untold story is like a song written but never heard; a true tragedy of the human heart.

She is not afraid to put herself out there, all her personal struggles, pain, loss. What is wonderful about this book is in the end, she wraps it all up with a loving Jesus who sees us at are very worst and our very best and He wants to be right there with us, not waiting on the sidelines til we get cleaned up enough. She encourages us to be loving and respectful to others regardless of a persons beliefs. She demonstrates that the kindness and lovingness of God is what draws people to Him.

It is like having your own tour guide. Marie has been on over 8 Disney cruises to such destinations as East Coast, Paris and Spain. There are 10 tips each with its own chapter explaining in detail. This book is very organized with many cost savings. All the ships have photos and selecting staterooms. From the moment you embark to dining to packing lists. It is all there and a wonderful find!

Perhaps if we went on the Disney ships instead, we would have liked crises more. What I liked about this book is the thorough description of every aspect of the cruise from beginning to the end. The requisite gratuities were so well explained for the very hard workers on board; the majority of their salaries were from the tips. Most of the workers are away from their families for months at a time in order to support them. Cruises are expensive but the author provided numerous practical examples of how you can save! This book enticed me to think about Disney cruises. Perhaps someday, I will. I highly recommend this book for anyone contemplating taking a cruise, for ideas on not overwhelming your credit card limit, saving and the additional benefit of a reduced rate when you book the second time around. The adventures on Disney must be such a pleasant vacation for the family.

By Daniel Wow.This book takes a magical experience... and gives you the cheat codes.Everything from where the employees hang around in their time off, to saving tons of money in getting Disney's professional photographers to shoot you in action.I love how it takes you to the Nitty-Gritty details that help know what to pack, Telling you not only THAT there are Landry Services built in on the ships, but if you bring your own laundry detergent, you can do it for free using their amazing facilities. At first I thought that reading a book on Disney would take some of the adventure out of a trip, but boy, when I started reading it, I realized how much I didn't know that could have cost me-- even upwards of several hundred dollars. If you are going to Disney and want to save a buck, this book is WELL worth your money in Return on Investment

The Mormon Church is a high-demand group that exerts control over its members' Behavior, Information, Thoughts, and Emotions to create a cycle of psychological dependency. This BITE Model (developed by cult exit counselor Steven Hassan) describes how cults and totalist groups employ coercive persuasion that inflicts deep psychological scars. This short ebook supplements Luna Lindsey's "Recovering Agency" and reveals further how certain LDS doctrines, culture, and policies fit the BITE Model. These unhealthy pressures stifle free agency and keep members trapped within their Church. The BITE Model and Mormon Control looks at this same information through a different angle, and can either be read standalone, or both books can be read together for deeper understanding. Whether you are recovering from Mormonism or another totalist religion, or interested in real-life examples of group power dynamics to protect yourself from manipulation, or whether you are merely curious, this book will be a quick and fascinating exploration of the LDS inner-life. Turn the pages and learn the answers to longstanding questions about this unique American religion and about the human mind.

This book should be read for its content rather than its tone or quality of writing. The Mormon Church has often been compared to Scientology, and this book clearly shows why that comparison has some merit. It is understandable why someone would be angry (very angry) if subjected to these control tactics.

By Rick A great summary of the mind control methods used in high-demand groups and how they relate to the LDS (Mormon) Church. There are quite a few spelling and grammatical errors, otherwise I would give it 5 Stars.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. and although I enjoyed reading the book By Michael This book is skewed a little bit to the meanish side. Ms. Lindsey writes as if there is a thread of hostility toward LDS men, and although I enjoyed reading the book, I had to take it in sips rather that slamming through it- take a rest once in a while. But I think the book, especially for the price, is worth a read. I agree with most of what Ms. Lindsey has to say, but not much here in the form of originality. A lot of sawing on saw dust.

The most checked-out book in the Hogwarts Library, and a volume no Quidditch player or Harry Potter fan should be without! If you have ever asked yourself where the Golden Snitch came from, how the Bludgers came into existence, or why the Wigtown Wanderers have pictures of meat cleavers on their robes, you need QUIDDITCH THROUGH THE AGES. This invaluable volume is consulted by young Quidditch fans on an almost daily basis.Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to Comic Relief, who will use your money to continue improving and changing lives -- work that is even more important and astonishing than the three-and-a-half-second capture of the Golden Snitch by Roderick Plumpton in 1921.-- Albus Dumbledore

Quidditch Through the Ages (Harry Potter), by Kennilworthy Whisp

From School Library Journal Grade 4-8-These slim paperbacks are made to look like actual Hogwarts tomes, complete with creased covers and plenty of marginalia scribbled by Harry and other students. Fabulous Beasts, a facsimile of Harry Potter's very own textbook, contains descriptions of 75 magical beasts, written in a wonderfully dry yet droll style by a renowned magizoologist. Quidditch is the facsimile of a Hogwarts library book, which had to be literally pried from the hands of librarian Madam Pince. It gives a comprehensive history of the game and its rules, as well as a rundown of each of the 13 league teams of Britain and Ireland. Harry Potter fans who pride themselves on knowing every minute bit of Hogwarts trivia will devour both books. From Professor Dumbledore's introductions to the price listed on the back cover (14 Sickles 3 Knuts), readers will find a wealth of detailed magical lore and laugh-out-loud humor. Neither book is as gripping as the actual series, of course, but fans who are waiting for the fifth installment will be entertained by these volumes in the meantime.Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Reviewed with J. K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts.

Gr. 4-7. Because this is a "Harry Potterless" year, kids in need of a fix may find it in these two volumes. The conceit is that these are Harry's schoolbooks (Fantastic Beasts, by Newt Scamander; Quidditch, by Kennilworthy Whisp), with margin notes by Harry and pal Ron Weasley. The concept breaks down in the introductions: Professor Dumbledore explains that the books are being offered to muggles (because the proceeds of the books are going to British charity Comic Relief, a disclosure that will raise the eyebrows of any reader who undestands the importance of secrecy in the wizard world. Nevertheless, a lot of effort has gone into making these seem like real textbooks. The jackets look torn and faded, the print is (annoyingly) small, and the information is well detailed. Illustrations are in short supply, and not every fan will want to know this much about Quidditch and imaginary beasts, especially when the text is so hard to read. Buy several copies (the money really does go to charity), but expect a few disappointed readers. Ilene CooperCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Funny, likely prized by serious Harry Potter fans By A Customer Summary:The book was published as a charitable publication; all of the proceeds are supposed to go to a charitable organization with the writing and publication costs being taken care of by donations. As for the contents, the book covers the history and rules of Quidditch and talks about some of the professional teams in Great Britain. My Comments:First, the book is quite funny, with numerous humorous notes and stories. It is more reminiscent of Rowlings earlier Harry Potter novels than it is of numbers 4 and 5 that do have some funny elements but tend to be much more serious than the first three. The book is also probably highly prized by Harry Potter fanatics because it further develops the already incredibly detailed magical/muggle world of the series. Rowling has accomplished something few other authors can claim - the creation of a credible world - and this is just another doorway into that world. The only problem I could possibly see with this book is that it is hardly long enough to be called a book; it is more a monograph or pamphlet with its roughly 50 pages. Granted this is a fictitious history which means every detail and story has to be developed from scratch. What's more, it has to be incorporated into the existing stories and future stories. Nevertheless, this can only be described as a 'brief' history of Quidditch.Overall, you can read the entire thing in about 30 minutes and if you are a die hard Harry Potter fan you'll probably appreciate it and find it disappointingly short. If not, it won't likely keep your interest like the novels will. I'd recommend it for die hard fans but be aware that it is short.

Rowling is a great book to read if you like the Harry Potter books and the sport Quidditch als from those books. This book guides you from the beggining of Quidditch until the present of what Quidditch is now.The book is focused only on Quidditch,it talks about the many teams from England and many other countries as well. It also talks about where the bludgers came into existence, and why the teams have certain logos on their uniforms. The book mentions amazing events and things that have happened in historic matches. Also it talks on how rules have changed through time. There are many other features that this book includes,I hope you like it as much as I did.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Quidditch Through the Ages By Theatre Kidd Quidditch Through the Ages is a sort of addition to the Harry Potter series. If you've read the Harry Potter books, you probably remember the characters talking about what a wonderful, exciting and informative book it is.I kind of expected it to be longer, but I suppose that you can't get everything you want... all in all, for an additional book I thought that it was pretty okay. The best things about it were the little comments and tid bits that made it really seem like a book from the Hogwarts library.... the card in the front that has the names of all the kids that checked it out, the introduction from Dumbledore, and the conversion from dollars to sickles and knuts on the back are all really cool.If you're a Harry Potter fan, you have to get this, if just to ease your curiosity on what it's about. But beware- this book has no plot and reads pretty darn boring, except for a few select parts. It clears up quite a bit of the fourth book's Quidditch Cup, and if there are any more matches in future books, I suggest keeping this close at hand. This is rated G, and is really really tame. The fifth book was kind of crazy, what with the teen angst and such, but this takes you back to the happy, carefree world of Harry Potter.

Where's the Baboon?, by Michaël Escoffier

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—As three white mice follow a sign to school, they invite readers to "search for hidden words!" A series of questions are asked, and the answers are hidden in the final work with visual clues; putting the letters that appear in a different color and font size together provides the solution. For example, a pig holding a paintbrush in front of a splattered canvas is the artist who "made this painting." The word painting is presented in black, but the letters P, I, and G are slightly larger and in red. Animals filled with personality cavort and play across the well-composed pages. A muted palette enhances the humor and invites readers to closely examine the affable pictures, which also hold the answers hidden in the words. The only one missing appears in the final chaotic, joyful spread: "baBOOn!" VERDICT This fresh and festive book encourages not only wordplay but careful examination of illustration sure to please readers of any age.—Maria B. Salvadore, formerly at District of Columbia Public Library

Review "Kids will enjoy searching for answers in both words and pictures, not to mention the surprise at the story’s end. The muted colors of Di Giacomo’s illustrations complement each scene’s subtle humor (a seagull reading Jonathan Livingston, for instance), and all works together beautifully to unify language, picture, and story." -- STARRED REVIEW, Booklist“As the cover art teases, this is both a game and a riddle book, with clever illustrations providing clues . . . In a word: outstanding.” – STARRED REVIEW, Kirkus Reviews“Call it what you like, but Esoffier and Di Giacomo appear to have another hit on their hands . . . Wordplay and fun—what’s not to like?” – Book Page“Escoffier and Di Giacomo keep up the wordplay in this fun companion to 2014’s Take Away the A, which invites readers to find the names of animals hidden within various words . . .Di Giacomo’s rough-hewn illustrations place the action in a rowdy school, with plenty of funny encounters to keep kids giggling.” – Publishers Weekly"...the creative duo of Michaël Escoffier and Kris Di Giacomo returns with a magnificent seek-and-find caper that plays as much with words as with pictures."––The Wall Street Journal"Animals filled with personality cavort and play across the well-composed pages. A muted palette enhances the humor and invites readers to closely examine the affable pictures. . . . This fresh and festive book encourages not only wordplay but careful examination of illustration sure to please readers of any age."—School Library Journal

Rather than a story- per se each page has a scene and a question. For example, "Who made this painting?" and you see a bunch of animals holding dripping brushes next to an art easel. You could take a guess that since the pig is the one closest to the easel, perhaps it was him. The answer is found by looking at the actual text of the question- you'll see that within the word "painting" the p, i, and g are all in red and the rest of the letters are in black. Ta-da! It was the pig! This can be a fun game for children- both by using visual context clues to figure out the answer and then by working to use the red letters to spell out the name of the animal. The illustrations are whimsical and fun and the animals are so happy!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute and clever By D. Jennings This is a really cute idea....use the clues to find the words (in proper order) hidden within larger words. Early readers will enjoy the game, and the goofy animals as well. Since there's no "look inside" button for this book, I'll include some photos.I think that publishers are inclined to label all picture books for "ages four to eight", but I wouldn't be surprised if many 7- and 8-yr-olds are beyond this. Best for ages 5-6 or younger kids who are reading already. The only thing I'd change about this book is the colors. the illustrations are adorable but they're done in very muted shades of grey, brown, beige, dusty salmon and dusty teal, and the edges of the pictures are, I suppose, "antiqued"... colored as if they were soiled. I understand that this is stylized work but bright, crisp illustration might be better to get the attention of young children.
