By A Customer Big Dog and Little Dog are very lovable, but bad, in the only children's book I know that comes right out and says what all children know--being bad is fun, at least until it's time to pay. This book also may serve as a foundation on which to engage a child on the nature of justice. In particular, is it fair that Big Dog, after creating a big mess, gets in big trouble, while Little Dog, who created only a little mess, also gets in big trouble? Should there not be a principle of proportionality in the imposition of penalties?

It makes her and my husband laugh especially when they are both in big trouble. Very cute and easy to read and understand especially at this age where simple is better.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. So far, so good By Valz So far I really enjoy the book...kind of upset I even saw this preview and decided to read it, because now I have to wait 5+ months to know what happens. Cecilia Ahern is probably my favorite author so I was super excited that she has a new book out, just super disappointed I have to wait so long until I can read all of it. Either way the first five chapters are great.. So I imagine the rest of the book will be great as well- I guess I will find out in 5 months :)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pretty good but I feel like I've read it before By Marina Burgos da Silva The first five chapters are pretty good but seem too similar to the divergent books. Feel like there will be a book 2 and 3.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Only 2 "Chapters" By Melissa Martin It's only the first two chapters. The first chapter is one sentence and the second a few paragraphs. What's the point?

'Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend,' Proverbs 27:17 tells us. God uses Christian friendships to help His children grow in grace and stay true to Christ. But our twenty-first-century Western culture values individualism, busyness, and selfishness qualities that do not encourage deep, long-lasting, satisfying friendships. Church historian Michael Haykin guides us through a practical survey of biblical and historical friendships, drawing principles from them that will aid us in forming our own biblical friendships that will sharpen us for our Christian journey in a world that is no friend to grace.

Cultivating Biblical Godliness Series D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones once said, ''The world today is looking for, and desperately needs, true Christians. I am never tired of saying that what the Church needs to do is not to organize evangelistic campaigns and attract outside people, but to begin herself to live the Christian life. If she did that, men and women would be crowding into our buildings. They would say, 'What is the secret of this?'''

Many people who are new to the church need instruction in the most basic aspects of godly living. Even where churches are engaged heavily in discipleship, visitors and members often have gaps in their understanding and practice. One of the greatest needs of our time is for the Spirit of God to cultivate biblical godliness in us in order to put the glory of Christ on display through us, all to the glory of God the Father.

For these reasons, Joel Beeke and Ryan McGraw are coediting a series of booklets titled Cultivating Biblical Godliness. These booklets treat matters that are vital to Christian experience, and each contribution aims to address a wide variety of people and circumstances at a fundamental and introductory level. This includes teaching people what to believe in order to practice personal holiness as well as specific directions on how to cultivate biblical godliness in relation to issues that are common to God's people.

The distinctive feature of this series is its experiential tone. While some booklet series aim to enlighten the mind, these booklets aim to warm the affections as well. The goal is to promote communion with the triune God and to transform the entire person in thought, speech, and behavior. To this end, we intend to include a wide range of authors whom the Spirit has blessed to skillfully stir up the church to personal holiness and affection to Christ through their preaching and writing ministries.

We need a Christianity that puts the transformative power of God in the gospel on display through developing a communion with God that is visible to the world. Our prayer is that through this series, the Lord would revive His church by producing Christians who are full of love for Christ, who deny themselves in order to follow Him at great personal cost, and who know the joys of walking with the triune God. This is the kind of Christianity that we need. This is the kind of Christianity that the triune God has used to turn the world upside down. May He be pleased to do so again.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Primer on True Biblical Friendship By Beth Saathoff How Should We Develop Biblical Friendship? by Joel Beeke and Michael Haykin is part of the 12-booklet Cultivating Biblical Godliness series published by Reformation Heritage Books. This booklet is short at just 46 pages and looks at the Christian duty to develop biblical friendships.I found this book to be very encouraging as I find myself in a new church home. The authors not only look at the art of building godly friendships, but also give practical steps toward deepening those friendships. In addition, they remind the Christian that "[a]s you strive to be a friend, you must recognize the mystery of how friendships come to pass. You cannot make someone be your faithful friend. God is Lord of friendship," (p. 22).I recommend How Should We Develop Biblical Friendship? for all Christians. True biblical friendship is difficult to find in the frenzy of activities in most local churches. Truly close friends are few and far between, so cultivation of that true friendship is important. Beeke & Haykin quote Esther Edwards Burr to show the importance of the relationships we have here on earth: "True friendship is first enkindled by a spark from heaven, and heaven will never suffer it to go out, but it will burn to all eternity," (p. 11).***"Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind," (Phil. 2:2).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fun and Enlightening! By dustin An enjoyable and enlightening book. Tarantino and Theology is a guided tour of important issues in the director’s films, issues sometimes consciously raised and sometimes impressively unearthed by these authors. This book will surely make you a more educated critic of one of our generation’s most important auteurs, and I believe it will, in the future, help me more quickly identify theologically significant issues in (especially secular) works of art. If this appeals to you, I suggest checking it out.Several titles were especially salient and helpful in this regard. Josh Corman writes a very good piece which examines the ways in which Tarantino’s most recent films “recognize our need for a savior, some entity who can account for the world’s evils, engage them, and rectify them,” and how Tarantino as director positions himself as the required Messiah. However, Corman argues that in both Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, Tarantino’s preferred method of justice, a “particularly gruesome form of retributive justice…fails to meet the standard of restorative justice exemplified by Christ.” Instead of using Tarantino to think about theology, Russell Hemati turns the tables in an essay that very much helped me understand the principles (including theological principles) operative in Reservoir Dogs. Within the minutiae of dialogue and plot, Hemati impressively shows how principles found in Saint Augustine’s Confessions can help “better understand the interplay of characters…and show the concept of masculinity as the principle means” by which the film’s main characters come together. Philip Tallon’s “On Death Proof” is a brisk and engaging dialogue that analyzes the ethics of watching morally suspect movies, and argues that moral problems “detract from the greatness of a work, even if they don’t destroy its value completely.” He argues that “whenever we are interacting with anything as complex as a movie, we bring our whole person to its appreciation. If there are moral problems then there are aesthetic problems. If categories like right and wrong are relevant in any way to the work of art, then those categories are relevant in our evaluation of the work.”Finally, I can foresee this book’s benefits for the socially-minded dinner guest—whether with unbelievers, discussing Tarantino in a more substantive, thoughtful way, or in scandalizing more modest fellow Christians by showing—as Jonathan Walls writes in the Introduction—that if Christian theology is correct, and God created all things, then “there will be traces of theological truth to be found everywhere, including some surprising places.”

By Redi it has been a while, 4 book between to be exact. i have read every superhuman book in the series and this book is right there with them. maybe not as good as hunter or as real and interesting as stronger but still it all leads to two great things in the end and fixes one of the most depressing things out of stronger. please can we not have such a long lay off for the next book, especially after those epilogues????

By John Mcdonald After an extremely long 6 1/2 year wait the fourth novel is finally here and it was totally worth it. (Check out the prequel super human series which deff helped with the wait)Crossfire can be read without reading the prequels, but you'll get a lot more out of Crossfire if you go back and read the prequels first. The writing is extremely good, as is the story. Without giving too much away he combines characters and plot lines from both book series which makes for an interesting story. I read the entire book in a four hour time span because I could not put it down.I hope he finishes the series regardless of sales.

I don't want to spoil anything, but if you enjoyed the New Heroes or the Superhuman series, give it a read.

Review

“In short, this study is a welcome contribution to the field and will make an excellent textbook for the classroom.”  (Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, 1 October 2015)

Review

Professors Deal and Ruppert offer a detailed account of the rich diversity of Japanese Buddhist traditions from the sixth century to the present, paying close attention to social context. This comprehensive volume draws together the most recent developments in scholarship for each historical period and redresses many of the gaps in prior overviews. It will serve for years to come as a welcome introduction to students and a valuable reference for specialists.Jacqueline Stone, Princeton University

From the Back Cover

A Cultural History of Japanese Buddhism presents a vivid, nuanced, and chronological account of Buddhist religion in Japan, from its emergence in the sixth century right through to the present day. Authors William Deal and Brian Ruppert, both experts on Japanese religions, explore each period of Japanese history to reveal the complex and often controversial histories of Japanese Buddhists and their unfolding narratives.

Incorporating the most recent Japanese and Western scholarship, the book explores the contexts that made possible the introduction of Buddhist texts and images in the sixth century; traces their development through the Nara and early Heian eras; and reveals the increasing influence of Buddhism into the Kamakura Era. It addresses the increasing competition between Buddhist, Shinto, and Neo-Confucian world-views through to the mid-19th century, and following Japan's emergence as a world power, explores Buddhist thought and practice from World War II through to the present day. Offering readers more than a simple historical review, the authors also reveal the seemingly contradictory ways that Japanese people are able to draw upon Buddhist ideas to help create a more meaningful world, whilst at the same time justifying multiple and competing perspectives. With scholarly precision, A Cultural History of Japanese Buddhism offers an illuminating glimpse into the evolution of a complex and often misunderstood religious tradition.

By Seth Zuihō Segall I am writing this review from the point of view of a Zen practitioner who is neither a student nor scholar of Japanese history. This book is a brief (250 pages, not counting glossary and index) overview of the history of Japanese Buddhism from protohistory to today within the broader context of political, historical, and cultural developments on the Japanese islands. It is up to date in terms of its coverage of contemporary scholarly issues and debates, as well as topics of contemporary interest (e.g., the status of women in Buddhism). It's the kind of book where Zen ancestors like Dogen and Hakuin may get only a page of so of mention-- so don't expect it to deepen your knowledge of Zen, per se. Where is excels, for readers like me, is in putting movements like Zen into the context of the broader trends of Japanese history -- how kami worship was integrated into Buddhism, how the modern emphasis on funerary Buddhism developed, how the Meiji Restoration affected the direction of Buddhist thought, etc. As a survey, the book does not spend too much time on any of these issues, so if you have an interest in a particular era you will not find your interest covered in any great depth, although each chapter has suggestions for further readings. Instead, you will get the broad sweep of history. On the other hand, the reader who knows very little about Japanese history may find himself/herself lost at times, because the book expects the reader will know something about major Japanese historical events like the political upheavals involving dynastic succession and warlord conflict. I found myself stopping every now and then to consult Wikipedia along the way. I can't think of another contemporary book that covers this topic in this kind of breadth, and my main complaint is that the book wasn't thicker and deeper and covered more territory. This book does a good job of introducing the reader to the sheer profusion and variety of Japanese Buddhisms, however, and understanding how uniquely Japanese history and concerns shaped the way Buddhism was expressed within Japan.

For twelve-year-old Emily, the best thing about moving to San Francisco is that it's the home city of her literary idol: Garrison Griswold, book publisher and creator of the online sensation Book Scavenger (a game where books are hidden in cities all over the country and clues to find them are revealed through puzzles). Upon her arrival, however, Emily learns that Griswold has been attacked and is now in a coma, and no one knows anything about the epic new game he had been poised to launch. Then Emily and her new friend James discover an odd book, which they come to believe is from Griswold himself, and might contain the only copy of his mysterious new game.

Racing against time, Emily and James rush from clue to clue, desperate to figure out the secret at the heart of Griswold's new game―before those who attacked Griswold come after them too.

Book Scavenger (The Book Scavenger series), by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Twelve-year-old Emily doesn't have enough time to get attached to places. She and her family move yearly, pursuing a Kerouac-inspired, footloose family adventure. Through their travels, Emily anchors herself through an online community called Book Scavenger, a geocaching-style game where participants hide books in public places and reveal the locations through encoded clues. Book Scavenger is the brainchild of Garrison Griswold, the "Willy Wonka of publishing," a San Francisco-based publisher with a penchant for elaborate spectacles and games. When Emily's family moves to San Francisco, she's excited to encounter the elusive Griswold and to participate in his newest game. Unfortunately, he is attacked on his way to a press conference, and even Emily's beloved Book Scavenger may be in jeopardy. The key to it all just might be in a mysterious book that Emily and her new neighbor James found at the BART station, but time is running short, and sinister (if bumbling) forces pursue them. Sprinkled with ciphers, San Francisco landmarks, and literary allusions, Book Scavenger is a fun, light, implausible adventure. The action drags occasionally, and the characterizations are sparse and sometimes overly cute, but the book's goofy, feckless charm is undeniable. VERDICT This will appeal to fans of Blue Balliett's art-world mysteries.—Katya Schapiro, Brooklyn Public Library

By JOY Whenever I take my kids to the library I always look through the new books to see if something looks interesting that they may enjoy. When I read the cover of this one I thought my children may like it,so I checked it out to read a little more. I am so glad I did. This book by Ms. Bertman was a real treat. It has just enough of everything to keep you interested ....mystery, excitement, adventure, great friendships, and a touch of goofiness to make it have great kid appeal. I really couldn't put it down. Making this book even more fantastic is the history behind it. Ms. Bertman draws your interest with historical facts about Edgar Allen Poe and other authors in history, adding a dash of geographical interest to San Francisco landmarks. If you like ciphers and codes and scavenger hunts you will learn even more tidbits on how codes are made and work.Well I'm not quite done because it gets even better. While reading I kept thinking to myself how much fun a book scavenger hunt would be and then lo and behold, I saw that they have a website just for that. This is even better than geocaching because you not only get to go on a scavenger hunt, but you get the pleasure of a nice long story to read on your way home. Yay! Lastly, if you are a teacher this book really can pack a punch. As a homeschool mom I kept thinking what a great book to use for a unit study. There is so much information that is factual. I looked up many of the landmarks and history references and they are all available for more research online. Top it off with a real scavenger hunt and you have a great unit. I think I may have to plan one out for next year! A++ Ms. Bertman

He is telling all his friends about it and making sure our local children's librarian knows that she should order it. After finishing the Harry Potter books last fall, he hadn't really found anything that engrossed him the same way. This book did -- I caught him under the covers with his book light one night. Plus, he loves the idea of hiding books for other people to find and it looks like he will be able to do that on the book's website.I read Book Scavenger last night to see what the big deal was, and I thought it was lovely. The characters are believable, if quirky, kids who are thinking about the kind of stuff kids should think about (puzzles, social and family interactions, how to be a good friend, etc.).

Her parents have set a goal of living for a time in each of the fifty states. Emily is tired of moving and of never staying anywhere long enough to make friends. However, San Francisco has some perks that the other cities did not. Emily loves the Book Scavenger game created by Garrison Griswold, a publisher who lives in San Francisco. She is hoping to take part in one of his local games. But she is very disappointed to learn that he has been mugged and is in serious condition in the hospital. She and her brother Matthew along with her new friend James are exploring and go to the location of the mugging. Emily finds a book - The Gold-Bug by Edgar Allen Poe - which she believes was left by some other book scavenger. Upon further exploration of the book, she decides that it is the first book in a treasure hunt set up by Griswold. She is determined to solve the puzzles and find the treasure. Unfortunately, she isn't the only one who wants the book and she and James find themselves in more danger than they could have anticipated.Besides the book hunt which is filled with codes to solve, this story is also about friendship. Emily and James have their rough spots as Emily is new to making friends and sometimes gets a little obsessed with her book scavenger hunt. It is also about the friendship of Griswold and a small bookstore owner named Hollister who helps the kids on their hunt. I liked the relationship that Emily has with her older brother Matthew who is obsessed with the band Flush. This story was exciting and I really liked the references to other books that the author managed to get into the story. Maybe it will encourage kids to dive into Poe, Hammett, and even Jack Kerouac.
