Dream Snow, by Eric Carle

Amazon.com Review It's almost Christmas and it hasn't snowed yet. As the farmer naps on his small farm, he dreams of being covered in a gentle blanket of new snow. Then, one by one, he dreams of each of his five animals (aptly named One, Two, Three, Four, and Five) being covered as well. When he awakens, he discovers that real snow--not dream snow--has fallen. And "Oh my! Oh my! I almost forgot," the farmer shouts, and, bundling up, hurries out to his tree (named Tree) with a box and a sack, looking remarkably familiar in his white beard and red suit. After decorating Tree, the farmer shouts "Merry Christmas to all!" and pushes a button for a surprise Yuletide jingle.

Young fans of Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle, and other multisensory books, will delight in pushing the same microchip button the farmer pushes to hear the tinkling, oddly eerie holiday tune. In an even more unusual departure from standard picture books, Carle inserts a clear plastic sheet, covered with snowflakes and a white blanket, before each illustration of the dreaming farmer and his animals. Turn the plastic page to discover what kind of critter lies beneath the snow. Carle's magnificent collages, as always, are the heart and soul of his books. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From Booklist Ages 2-6. Visual and musical gimmicks enhance Carle's signature bright, textured collages in this holiday-cum-counting story. A white-bearded farmer lives the simple life with a few animals that he names One through Five. Children don't find out which number matches which animal, though, until they follow the farmer through a visually clever dream. "It's almost Christmas, and it hasn't snowed yet," says the farmer. But as he sleeps, he envisions snow falling, covering each of his animals, while the text counts along--"The snowflakes gently covered One with a blanket"---a plastic sheet printed with snow overlays each page, concealing the collage images until readers lift the page and discover that One is a horse, Two is a cow, etc. Dream becomes reality when the farmer awakes to a white world and hurries outside (dressed in Santa coat and boots) with presents for the animals and ornaments for a tree that, thanks to a changeable battery pack, plays a chiming tune at the press of a button. Although this is more an exercise than a story, Carle fans and toddlers learning the basics will still enjoy the gentle text and creative design features. From Kirkus Reviews The venerable and prolific Carle (Hello, Red Fox, 1998, etc.) offers a quiet Christmas story with a little music at the end. A farmer lives alone on a small farm with so few animals that he calls them One, Two, Three, Four, and Five. Oh, he also has a tree named Tree. One night near Christmas he falls asleep in his favorite chair after his peppermint tea, and dreams that he is covered in a white blanket. On successive pages, One the horse, Two the Cow, Three the sheep, and so on are each covered in a snowflake blanket, accomplished by an acetate page of flakes and an amorphous shape that when turned reveals the animal. When the farmer awakes and finds it has snowed for real, he dresses himself warmly, decorates Tree, and strews gifts for all five animals under it. When he shouts "Merry Christmas to all!" he pushes a button that children can push, producing a lovely Yuletide tinkle. The pictures are in Carle's trademark richly colored and textured collages that capture the snowy magic of Christmas. Adults may be charmed to see that Carle dedicates the book to Barry Moser, who modeled for the farmer, although from the photo on the back cover Carle and Moser could pass for brothers with their shiny pates and neat white beards. A New Holiday Classic By Roz Levine Eric Carle's new picture book Dream Snow introduces the farmer, who lives with his five farm animals, named One, Two, Three, Four, Five and his tree, simply named The Tree. It's almost Christmas and it hasn't snowed yet. So one evening, the farmer sits in his favorite chair, has a cup of peppermint tea and some bread with honey, dozes off and begins to dream of snow. When he awakens, he finds that it actually has snowed. So, he bundles up in hat, boots and gloves, grabs a big box, throws a sack over his shoulder and, looking very familiar, heads out to the barn. There he decorates The Tree and along with his farm animals, poised to push a button, wishes "Merry Christmas to All". What makes this simple little book so special, is Mr Carle's wonderfully inventive illustrations. He has painted his snow flakes and drifts on clear plastic, inserted before each page, which when lifted reveals the farmer or one of his animals on the page below. And as the farmer is wishing all a Merry Christmas, your youngsters can help by him by pushing the button, to hear a holiday song. This is a charming, gentle story the entire family will love and a sure classic in years to come.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Dream Snow By student SJSU Toy book--joy book, Carle hits a home-run again. Follow the farmer and his animals--named after numbers because he can count them on one hand, through a dream of snow falling on the barnyard. The reality of a snowfall intrudes on their lives and a hustle begins over something he has forgotten. Overlays complete the illusion of snow covering all it comes in contact with and our young audience uncovers each animal to ensure its well-being. A musical sound effect ending the story celebrates Christmas. Bright poster paint montage cut-outs fill the pages to create a warm and inviting texture to the story as it unfolds. The folk art is child-like yet filled with wonderful touches of details that overall create a satisfying balance. Children will come back to it again and again.

In The Middle Path of Moderation in Islam, leading Islamic law expert Mohammad Hashim Kamali examines the concept of wasatiyyah, or moderation, arguing that scholars, religious communities, and policy circles alike must have access to this governing principle that drives the silent majority of Muslims, rather than focusing on the extremist fringe. Kamali explores wasatiyyah in both historical/conceptual terms and in contemporary/practical terms. Tracing the definition and scope of the concept from the foundational sources of Islam, the Qu'ran and Hadith, he demonstrates that wasatiyyah has a long and well-developed history in Islamic law and applies the concept to contemporary issues of global policy, such as justice, women's rights, environmental and financial balance, and globalization. Framing his work as an open dialogue against a now-decades long formulation of the arguably destructive Huntingtonian "clash of civilizations" thesis as well as the public rhetoric of fear of Muslim extremism since the attacks of September 11, 2001, Kamali connects historical conceptions of wasatiyyah to the themes of state and international law, governance, and cultural maladies in the Muslim world and beyond. Both a descriptive and prescriptive meditation on a key but often neglected principle of Islam, The Middle Path of Moderation in Islam provides insight into an idea that is in the strategic interest of the West both to show and practice for themselves and to recognize in Muslim countries.

The Middle Path of Moderation in Islam: The Qur'anic Principle of Wasatiyyah (Religion and Global Politics), by Mohammad Hashim Kamali

Review "This scholarly book is a major addition to works that deal with 'moderate' Islam, still the Islam of the majority of Muslims, which is also traditional Islam. Drawing from a wide range of sources and many notable voices, Kamali presents an extensive range of issues from social justice to the environmental crisis, from spirituality to relation with other religions, all seen from the perspective of moderation or wasaÏiyyah, which is the authentic Islamic perspective. Kamali is to be congratulated for writing a much needed work on normative and genuine Islam at a time when so many strident forces and voices, both the non-Islamic and nominally Islamic, are seeking to eclipse in the eyes of many the authentic image of the Islamic religion." --Seyyed Hossein Nasr, University Professor of Islamic Studies, The George Washington University

"Extremely timely, bridge-building and opening new insights on the true content of Islam. An absolute must for all those fighting for a better understanding between Christianity and Islam. On the basis of neglected sources of Islam the author deals with salient issues such as jihad, women's rights, and interreligious intolerance, demonstrating that the true Islam advocates for moderation as a cornerstone for religious pluralism." --Professor Dr. Rüdiger Wolfrum, Managing Director of the Max-Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law, Heidelberg, Germany

"For years Mohammad Hashim Kamali has been one of the leading scholars in the world articulating an understanding of Islamic law that is equally grounded in the tradition of Islamic jurisprudence and also responsive to the needs and sensibilities of modern Muslims. This book is at once the culmination of decades of thinking about justice, authority and knowledge in Islam and a major new statement about how Islamic principles of moderation can cohere into a comprehensive vision of religious morality. It will undoubtedly take its place as the major point of reference for this vision, and be studied closely across the globe." --Andrew F. March, Associate Professor of Political Science, Yale University

"Another accessible and learned work from one of the scholars who has done the most to bring Islamic law to a global audience and discussions of comparative law. And very timely." --Jonathan Brown, Associate Professor, Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and Associate Director of the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University

"With this book, Kamali (founding CEO, International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies [IAIS], Malaysia) adds to a long list of invaluable corrective studies on Islam targeting both scholarly and general readers... Kamali offers a convincing, sensitive reading of practices of religious pluralism among Muslims. A culmination of his decades of scholarship on Islamic law and jurisprudence, this book should serve as an important reference for years to come... Highly recommended." --CHOICE

"What I find particularly attractive about this book is that it is written in a style that both scholars and the general public will find accessible and yet without losing its academic rigour... Going beyond the pure theory of Wasatiyyah in this applied part of the book, Prof Kamali engages in a crucial set of meditations about how our Islamic traditions, when guided by the middle way, go beyond just dealing tolerantly with other religions." --His Royal Highness, Sultan Dr Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, Sultan of Perak

About the Author Mohammad Hashim Kamali was Dean and Professor at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) and the International Islamic University in Malaysia. He currently heads the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia.Tariq Ramadan is Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University (Oriental Institute, St. Antony's College).

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Valuable Contribution to Islamic Thought. By Ibn Zobair al-Hussaini This was an excellent book that dealt with a variety of topics facing the Muslim world and humanity in general. Professor Kamali was able to summarize and simplify a myriad of complex topics without being simplistic. He is also able to capture the diversity of perspectives in both Sunni and Shi'i thought without partisanship or sectarianism. For that, I am indebted to him. That being said there are a few issues which prevent me from giving a five star rating.1. In the examples that the author gives, there is a clear slant supporting the Malaysian government. This in-itself is not a problem, but it is very apparent in his commentary on Malaysian opposition parties. The reader should be aware that this is only one side of the story.2. I found one factual error. He says that Sunnis are prohibited from fasting on the 10th of Muharram and the day of Arafah. On the contrary, both of these dates are strongly recommended for fasting. There are many ahadith about the merits of fasting these dates.3. There are some typographical errors in the book.I must emphasize that these do not change the fact that this book dives into very important issues that the Muslim World faces. For that alone, it is an invaluable contribution and definitely worth reading.

There has never been a more important time for the church—and individual Christians—to intentionally leave a legacy of faith. Christians are facing a unique challenge in the 21st century. Will we leave a tangible reminder of our faith? Will we be able to transfer a vibrant picture of the Christian faith to the next generation? Will our children and grandchildren treasure our faith? Will they have the tools to defend the truthfulness of Christianity? If Christians are going to leave footprints of faith that can withstand the challenges of our time, we must evaluate our faith through the lens of the skeptical questions of our secular culture. In other words, we Christians cannot leave a clear footprint of our faith without giving answers to the challenging issues of our day. Our children, our family, friends, and our neighbors will increasingly be unable to embrace their faith unless they are given practical and relevant tools to answer key questions. This book is designed to help you defend your Christian faith and in the process leave a footprint for generations to admire and follow. The topics addressed in this book are not confusing or over your head. This book looks at ten vital footprints or steps in leaving a legacy of faith. Each of these topics has been shared with churches throughout the United States—all of them with a favorable response by the ordinary people in the pew.

Wars and rumors of wars, blood moons, natural disasters, the onslaught of terrorism, spreading heresies-the news is filled with reports of such things. But which of them are truly “signs of the times,” according to biblical prophecy?

God says, “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come” (Isaiah 46:10). The One who knows the future has revealed much about it in His Word, the Bible.

This book contains one hundred questions concerning the end times, answered from a biblical perspective. “How can I understand the book of Revelation?” “What is Israel's role?” “What is the rapture?” “Should I be worried about 666?” “Are we living in the end times?” We don't have all the details of what will happen, but this book will point you consistently to the Bible for answers. The student of Scripture should have an advantage when it comes to prophecy: “You, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief” (1 Thessalonians 5:4).

Eschatology is a fascinating and beneficial study. Following current events is sometimes like watching pieces of a puzzle fall into place. We know God's purposes will stand and what He has decreed will come to pass.

He has done a great job on end times. I think that he should write another book covering myths and lies pertaining to what Christians believe. EG evolution explains everything, we don't need a God; the bible contradicts itself in places like is it faith or works for salvation? Is Jesus the only way to salvation, aren't there other routes to God? Is Jesus really God and how do we know? Doesn't the fossil record confirm evolution? Didn't we all come from the big bang? Is scripture really God inspired and what is the proof? Wasn't it written by a lot of old blokes thousands of years ago and doesn't really apply now?I am a born again Christian and a PhD scientist creationist who believes that the bible is absolute truth. The questions I have put I can answer but feels there needs to be a book that really tackles these and many more. blessings ainsley chalmers

The author answers questions about the end times and backs up the answers with solid biblical references. There is no speculation - no attempt to sensationalize the coming events; just a forthright presentation of what the Bible tells us and where to find it. Where the scripture is silent, so is the author.

They’ve helped orchestrate the perfect day for countless couples. Now twelve new couples will find themselves in the wedding spotlight in the second Year of Weddings novella collection.

Can two left feet lead to one perfect romance?

Grant Nichols is a genius in the kitchen and a klutz on the dance floor. But his friend’s wedding is shaping up to be a shindig the likes of which Kings Meadow has never seen—including dancing. Lots of dancing. Then he learns that a local dance teacher, Skye Foster, is offering dance lessons for the wedding party. The lessons are free, so what does he have to lose?

A former rodeo queen, Skye Foster teaches children ballet and tap during the day, but with the popularity of ballroom dancing and her own love of Country Swing, she’s been teaching adults in the evenings.

Grant comes from a family of ten siblings. He was the second oldest and believes he's had his fill of little rug rats. He’s happy with his bachelor state, despite the fact that he’s given up his ladies’ man lifestyle. Even he admits to his wilder nature and has been trying to clean up his act, with God's help.

Skye, on the other hand, loves being around kids. She would love to find the right guy and settle down to have half a dozen children of her own.

Grant and Skye are no match on paper. But when they step onto the dance floor, they move to a love song all their own.

They both often leave you wanting more of the story, a least a little more. I HOPE YOU DANCE by Robin Lee Hatcher is a charming story of a dance instructor, Skye Foster, who feels her biological clock may be ticking . She lives in a small town in Idaho where everyone knows everyone.Skye is teaching all the wedding attendants of a friend's wedding. Enter Grant Nichols, a friend of the groom, who is new to the town and has kept to himself on a farm. Will they make a connection? Will they overcome the obstacles presented in the differing goals and dreams? As usual Robin writes a thoroughly pleasurable and inspirational story. I enjoyed it and know anyone would also.I received this novella free for an honest review from Zondervan via Thomas Nelson Publishers .

I liked these characters and thought that the storyline was a good one.Since it is a novella, the plot has to move quickly and the romance and characters are not able to be as fully developed as in a full-length novel. However, even though this romance moves at lightning fast speed, I thought it was fun.I also think that I Hope You Dance is a good peek into the King’s Meadow series. I have read books two and three of this series and really enjoyed both of them. If you are looking for a quick, easy, and romantic story, then I Hope You Dance may be just what you are looking for.I received a complimentary copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for an honest review.

This definitely gives you a feel for what a good writer she is.This is what I would call - short but sweet. I really liked the whole thing from beginning to end. It was a very nice little romance that moved along at a perfect pace. I thought there was good character development considering the Novella size. And you really did get a feel for the storyline - a definite beginning, middle and end.The one thing that this story does - it makes you want to read more by Robin Lee Hatcher!Thank you BookLook Bloggers for sending me this e-book for my honest review!

Good idea, but sadly bad realization/execution By Dawnie This book has some good points, but sadly most of this book –especially the examples of situations of those 10 reasons- are not very well done. And overall this book is not a guidebook in the typical sense, but more of a rule book on what the authors think a Christian should do and how a Christian should think in different situations.Lets start with the points of this book that I enjoyed:I really enjoyed how the authors involved direct bible study after each reason that gets the reader thinking and working with the bible in direct relation with a specific topic. That helps people that are new in studying the bible on their own and without directions as well as gives them a better feel for what topics the bible talks about and how they might be able to navigate and find what they are searching for on their own. I also like that it included ideas for bible study for the reader alone or in a group, depending on what the reader has available or enjoys more. Or maybe to do both. Either way, I really liked this part of the book, because I have not yet found a book that offers such a guiding way to bible study that really shows and teaches the reader how to start to learn to study the bible on their own.I also liked that this book reminds the readers how important it is to stay true to who you are and what you believe no matter the situation. That it shouldn’t matter to your friends what you believe, because that does not change what kind of person you are. And that if your friends can’t deal with the fact that you do believe in god, they might not be actual friends and people that you need in your life.I also liked that the authors point out that people should be who they actually are and not try to play a role that they believe others want to see, if that is not what they actually are or do things that they don’t really enjoy or believe in.The authors make it very clear how important it is to be who you really are and that people will enjoy that much more then if you try to be who you think they want to you to be.I think that that is something very important to remind especially teenagers of, be who you are and people will love you.Alright lets go on to what I thought was missing in this book, which sadly is more then what was actually in this book:I had hoped for more of a way to give high school students ideas on how to combine their very demanding schedules as high school students and everything that comes with that with their religion. And how they might handle situations without having to explain why. For example, this book could have had a reason why teenagers should not have sex before they marry and then given ideas on how to talk about the topic and give ideas on how a teenager can avoid situations that might be uncomfortable for them. Sadly it doesn’t, but more or less just says that it is not right to have sex before being married and then lists a rather clinical list of reasons why a teenager should not have sex (disease, unplanned pregnancies and so on) that any teenager can get by talking to a school nurse or the biology teacher. I had hoped for more.I wanted a book that actually gives teenagers ideas on how to be able to say no to drinking without being told that they are no fun, because the books gives them ideas on what to say without sounding either like religious nut or someone that never does anything any other “normal” teenager does. But once again this book sadly does not do that. What I found not as enjoyable about this book, is that I missed the guiding part. Sure there were the bible section guidelines. But other then that, no guidance to be found. The authors listed the reasons why you should stay Christian, they gave examples on some situations but there were no guidelines, but rather a clear solution to the given examples and how a Christian should behave in them. It was not: here is a situation and how you could handle it; it was more: here is a situation and if you are a real Christian this is how you should do it!I missed the parts where the authors teach or give ideas and not more or less order the reader how to behave and what to think. This book starts out by telling the reader that they are free to believe and think how and what they want and that they should continue to do so, especially in High School and then goes on to directly telling the readers what they should think if they are Christians. That just doesn’t fit to me.Either you want to teach people to be who they are and give them ideas on how to do so without actually telling them what to do –because that is not actual teaching if you directly tell them what they should think, do and say; at least to me a guide is not someone or something that directly tells you how you should behave in situations, but rather gives you ideas on what you might consider doing and let you then figure out how to behave correctly on your own. You learn as you go – that is a guide to me.If you – as an author or as a book- are not able to just give ideas or guiding towards a solution but rather just strait out telling the reader what they should be doing, don’t call yourself a guide book but rather a rule book and do what this book does: list reasons and solutions instead of guidelines and what and how to deal with specific moments in your life. All in all this book has good points, and some bad ideas. The only actual guidelines for the bible studies are fantastic and because of that I would recommend this book, but the actual reasons and what and how to deal with situations is not very well done in this book. And if you are not looking for a book that gives you ideas on how to start independent bible studies or how to start to get a better understanding on how to console the bible on todays problems, this book is not the one I would recommend, sadly. This book was given to me by NetGalley for free to give my honest review and thoughts.

The authors handle each subject with professionalism and, rather than preach to their readers, really help break the topic down into manageable concepts. Each chapter is filled with Scripture for the reader to look up on their own so that they base their beliefs on Scripture and not personal opinion or feelings. The book is a great tool for parents to read with their teenager in order to help jump start conversations about everyday matters that their child faces.

47 Strings. Tessa's Special Code, by Becky Carey

Review 47 Strings touched my heart - it is pure love! I would encourage any parents and educators to read this book to children as early as preschool age. It is inspirational, focused, and allows for those "teachable moments" that we look for in a children s book. --Randi Gillespie, Family Support Coordinator, National Association for Down Syndrome (NADS) and a parent of a daughter with Down syndrome

About the Author Writer and mom Becky Carey exposes her life raising her daughter Tessa, who has Down syndrome, on her blog, Dear Tessa. An advocate for her daughter and others with "47 strings," Becky strives to change the outdated stereotypes of Down syndrome. Becky, her husband Dan, and their children reside in southwest Wisconsin. This book has become more than a tool for educating children on how to accept difference. It has become a launching pad for families to move forward together after a diagnosis presents itself.

Praying the Bible, by Donald S. Whitney

Review

“Don Whitney’s suggestion to pray the Bible has made a huge contribution to my devotional life. This little book is explosive and powerful. Read it ready to experience a great step forward in your walk with Christ and in your commitment to prayer.”—R. Albert Mohler Jr., President and Joseph Emerson Brown Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“My walk with the Lord has often been strengthened and encouraged by Don Whitney’s writing. Now he reminds us of the value of using Scripture as a prompt and basis for our prayers. This is a particularly helpful tool for those of us who often struggle to know what and how to pray or whose minds tend to wander during private prayer. This book will surely help many refresh their time with the Lord.”—Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, author; Radio Host, Revive Our Hearts

“If you are looking for a book to teach you not only to pray but also to invigorate your intimacy with God through prayer, this is the one. I highly recommend this book written by a man who has instructed thousands of people about spiritual disciplines in academic circles and in church settings. My soul has been nourished as I have sat under Whitney’s teaching, especially on the topic of prayer. You and I need this book. You will be blessed in more than one way.”—Miguel Núñez, Senior Pastor, International Baptist Church, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; President, Wisdom & Integrity Ministries

“I prayed through Psalm 23 with tears streaming down my face, asking myself, why have I not done this before? Perhaps you’ve been told to pray the Scriptures, but you haven’t because you were never taught how to. Whitney’s simple approach makes praying through the Bible accessible while also leaving space for the Word and Spirit to work in your heart. Don’t give up on prayer! Praying the Bible will help transform your prayer life.”—Trillia Newbell, author, Enjoy, Fear and Faith, and United

“Prayer and Scripture intake are both essential for spiritual devotion, like the left and right wings of a plane. Prayer is the Christian’s duty. It should also be the Christian’s delight. Praying the Bible will teach you to take in the joy of Scripture-led prayer.”—H. B. Charles Jr., Pastor, Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida

“Whitney offers a wonderfully practical, pastoral, and biblical approach to prayer that relieves personal boredom and unleashes spiritual power. It’s so simple it will shock you and, at the same time, invigorate a renewed prayer life with your God.”—Bryan Chapell, President Emeritus, Covenant Theological Seminary; Senior Pastor, Grace Presbyterian Church, Peoria, Illinois

“Whitney has taught the material in this book a number of times at the WorshipGod conferences I lead. Unfailingly his has been one of the most appreciated and life-affecting seminars we’ve offered. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.” —Bob Kauflin, Director of Worship, Sovereign Grace Ministries; author, Worship Matters and True Worshipers

I don't have any excuses for this; it's the fruit of busyness and laziness and distraction. When I do pray, I sometimes run out of things to say, or my mind wanders. .If you struggle with prayer like I do, Dr. Donald Whitney has a possible solution to help your prayer life. His upcoming book, Praying the Bible, describes an incredibly simple yet effective method for focusing our prayer using Scripture. This short and practical book lays out a simple method for praying through Scripture:1. Select a passage of Scripture (usually a Psalm) and read it.2. Read the first verse. If a subject for prayer comes to mind, stop and pray. Use the words of the Scripture to help guide your prayer.3. When you're done with that verse, move on to the next verse.4. Repeat until you run out of time. It's really that simple. Dr. Whitney advises that the Psalms are the easiest Scriptures to pray through, and are most easily applicable to this method (though, with some modifications, you can pray through epistles and even some of the narrative portions of Scripture). What WorksDr. Whitney has been teaching this method of prayer for years as part of his "Personal Spiritual Disciplines" course at Southern Seminary, which is where I first encountered it when I took his course online. This method of praying through a Psalm is simple to do but I have benefited greatly from it. When I actually follow these steps, I don't have any problem finding things to pray for, and tend to have a rich prayer time. It's pathetic how little I actually put this into practice, because it really is beneficial.Dr. Whitney says of this method:"I have enough confidence in the Word and the Spirit of God to believe that if people pray in this way, in the long run their prayers will be far more Biblical than if they just make up their own prayers. That's what people usually do: make up their own prayers. What's the result? We tend to say the same old things about the same old things. And without the Scripture to shape our prayers, we are far more likely to pray in unbiblical ways than if we pray the thoughts that occur to us as we read Scripture."I have to agree with this assessment. When I pray through Scripture this way, I find that I am turned outward more, focusing more on the attributes of God and the needs of others than on my own list of petty requests.I also appreciate that Dr. Whitney avoids the trap of mystical language that is creeping into Evangelical/Baptist thought on prayer. He doesn't attribute this type of praying to an altered state of consciousness in which we are moved to pray in ways we don't intend as we get a "word." He is clear to say that we hear from God through His Word, rather than waiting for some mystical nudge that we attribute to the Spirit. However, as much as I appreciate the method and approach of this book, I have a few concerns.Possible IssuesFirst, there are a couple of quotes or stories that could be misinterpreted. For example, Dr. Whitney quotes Joni Eareckson Tada, who says that when we use God's words ("God's dialect"), we are "bringing God's power into our praying." I have no concerns about Tada's doctrinal soundness, and I think I know what she means here--praying God's Word leads us to pray God's Will, and when we pray God's Will, He works to bring it to pass for His great glory. However, in a day when Word-Faith heresy has been running rampant in Christianity, this statement can easily be misinterpreted as using God's words as totems and incantations to get what we want. The bigger concern I have about this book is more about the intended audience. As I said, I first encountered Dr. Whitney's prayer method through his seminary class, and for seminarians (especially those like me who have a lot of head knowledge but need more passion in prayer sometimes), this method is perfectly appropriate. However, for new believers or those who have been taught/influenced by weak Bible teachers, this could be a bit risky. Why? Because there is a danger of narcissistic eisegesis (or, as Chris Rosebrough calls it, "Narcigesis.") Eisegesis means to read meaning into the text, instead of pulling the intended meaning out of the text (exegesis). Narcissistic eisegesis means to read oneself into the text, usually in the role of the hero of the story. What results is the terrible preaching of many popular megachurch pastors, in which every Bible story becomes an analogy for you and your challenges. You are David facing your personal "giant." You are Daniel, working or going to school in your own "lion's den." You are Joshua, staring down a Jericho of work success or personal fulfillment. What does this have to do with Dr. Whitney's book? Dr. Whitney says in the description of this prayer method that praying the Bible is different than studying the Bible. While Bible study involves mining the meaning and context of the passage in order to properly interpret the text, praying the Bible is not as focused on right interpretation as much as on using the language of the text for inspiration. To his great credit, he does provide several examples of how to pray through a text using proper interpretive approaches. However, if the reader has been trained to see the Bible in this narcissistic way, then even using Scripture in prayer becomes an exercise in pursuing selfish goals. David's prayers for the protection of Zion and the joy of God's people will become prayers for personal success and advancement. Psalms that point to the coming Messiah-King will be turned into cries for success over one's personal enemies. In short, if the reader doesn't understand what/Whom the Bible is really about, then praying the Bible may not produce the results Dr. Whitney hopes.Final Analysis: Praying the Bible is really a great little book that can be a very useful tool for Christians who have a good basic understanding of the story of Scripture, and know how to read the text in context. With this knowledge in place, praying the Scriptures becomes a powerful tool in personal holiness. And even new or untrained believers can benefit from this book, as long as there is a more mature believer who can provide some practical guidance on the Scripture interpretation issue.=====Please Note: I was provided a complimentary electronic review copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review. The preceding thoughts are my own.

Read It, Do It By Tim Challies I have read all of Donald Whitney’s books because they invariably cause me to grow in my appreciation for the simplest but most important spiritual disciplines. As with so many other Christians, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life proved foundational in my understanding and practice of the spiritual disciplines. Simplify Your Spiritual Life was an important wake-up call to the beautiful simplicity of the Christian life. I was excited, therefore, to dive into his new work Praying the Bible. This book is premised on the existence of a very common problem: That prayer is difficult. “I maintain that people—truly born-again, genuinely Christian people—often do not pray simply because they do not feel like it. And the reason they don’t feel like praying is that when they do pray, they tend to say the same old things about the same old things.” I would guess that this resonates with you and that many of your prayers feel just like that. The repetition in your prayers can lead you to assume that your prayers are meaningless and having no effect. When you are bored with your prayers you stop praying. When you stop praying you feel like a spiritual failure and count yourself a second-rate Christians. It’s a familiar downward cycle. The problem is not that we pray about the same old things; rather, it’s that we say the same old things about the same old things.TweetNow the problem here is not with praying about the same old things. We have to pray regularly and repetitively about certain matters—personal holiness, family members, our church families, our unsaved neighbors and relatives, financial care and provision, health and safety, and so on. “The problem is not that we pray about the same old things; rather, it’s that we say the same old things about the same old things.” The problem, then, is one of method. The heart of Praying the Bible is Whitney’s instruction on a particular method that is meant to address the lack of variety in our prayers: “When you pray, pray through a passage of Scripture, particularly a psalm.” That’s it. “Simply go through the passage line by line, talking to God about whatever comes to mind as you read the text. See how easy that is? Anyone can do that.”He describes this method and then teaches it with very practical instructions. The book’s tone is of a wise, older Christian coming alongside a young one and saying, “Let me teach you what I have learned. Let me teach you how to pray.” It is warm, conversational, and very encouraging. Whitney’s long experience with this method, coupled with his enthusiasm for it, makes it seem both good and do-able. If you read the book, you will walk away knowing and being able to practice his method. I think I can just about guarantee that much. I also think you will walk away excited to try it out and confident that it will bring new life to your prayers. Now, as I come to the end of this review I feel the need to point out that this method is just one among many. While the method is roughly modeled in Scripture, and while many Christians practice it, it is nowhere demanded of us. Praying through Scripture as Dr. Whitney teaches is a powerful method of praying, but not a necessary one. There are other ways to bring new life and strength to your prayers. On a personal note, I have never made this kind of prayer a regular part of my prayer life. However, because of my respect for Donald Whitney and because of his enthusiasm for it, I am inclined to try it over an extended period. My only concern is that I am not quite sure how to integrate the method with my prayer list to ensure that I am praying for the wide variety of concerns (including, of course, all family members, church members, friends and neighbors, ministries I love, and so on). I think the book might have benefited from a little more guidance on how to do this.Knowing the Word of God and the character of God, Whitney concludes “It must be possible for every Christian, including every Christian reading this book, to have a meaningful, satisfying prayer life.” If you read it and implement its method, I am sure you will find this is true.

Wheaton: Crossway, 2015. 114 pp. $13.99While in Seminary I did not learn “new” methods on how to build a crowd, gain a following, publish a book, or make a name for myself. I was taught the basics…that have stood the test of time because they are based on God’s Word. What evangelical churches need for revival is not something complicated or unattainable. We need a hunger for God’s Word, qualified men to teach, preach, and live God’s Word. We need to become people who pray, who serve, who put others before ourselves. We need to become people who understand the biblical role and value of marriage, family, children, and humanity. People who will give sacrificially in obedience to the great commission as we make disciples and impact our communities.Simple right? The description for revival (even in our present day), summed up in a short paragraph. But how do we flesh out that paragraph? Donald Whitney’s books have impacted my life. I did not take him while at Southern for class, but his writings have been a tremendous blessing to my life and his latest book will sure be a blessing to yours. His work, Praying The Bible is a step in the right direction toward revival.I was introduced to praying through the Scriptures through the biography of George Mueller who Whitney refers to several times in the book and particular in chapter 10. Praying through the Scriptures has not only benefited my prayer life but it has also increased my Scripture memory. Do you struggle with focusing while praying? Does it bore you to pray daily? Can you recite the prayers of those who you have heard pray multiple times because they are same almost verbatim every time? Whitney has a clear message…the problem is NOT you…it is your method.Whitney emphasizes the problem in our praying is not us it is our method in Chapter One. He them introduces the Solution and Method in Chapters Two and Three. Next, Whitney expands more about the correct Method while giving examples from the Psalms and other parts of Scripture in Chapters Four, Five, and Six. In Chapter Seven (titles “The Most Important Part of This Book) Whitney invites his readers to put into practice what he has taught them (it was a great time for me to stop and pray through Psalms 55-58). The next two chapters evaluate and and summarize the the experience and the book before the final chapter gives examples of George Mueller, Jesus on the Cross, and Christians in the Book of Acts. Two Appendices cover the “Psalms of the Day” Chart and praying the Bible with a group.Praying the Bible is not the same as doing exegesis of a particular text or interpreting the Bible. You do not merely quote the Bible back to God as a mindless robot. Instead, the text drives your thoughts and serves as a springboard into a deeper, more meaningful prayer life. Whitney does a great job explaining and defending his position and illustrates it very well. He states “This isn’t reading something into the text; rather it’s merely using the language of the text to speak to God about what has come into your mind.”“No matter how long you pray, you never run out of things to pray when you pray the Bible.” In particular, Whitney focuses on praying through the Psalms. I agree wholeheartedly. The Psalms teach us how to pray. Whitney states “the main reason why the psalms work so well is prayer is that the very purpose God put them in his Word to us is for us to put them in our words to him.” While I do not prefer the “Psalms a Day” approach it is a good method, especially for a starting point, to begin praying the Bible. This book will be a “go to” for me for many years. It took just over 90 minutes to read (and I am a slow reader) and yet it is so practical for such a vital issues. It is so important for Christians to pray and praying the Bible will awaken them (like it has me) to a more fruitful and meaningful prayer life. If you are a pastor, read this and have your members read through it as well. If you are a church member read this and then give it to your pastor to read. I recommend that every Christian read this book and pray the Bible.**I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The mob at his heels, Joe fled to the catacombs. Marcus wasn't so lucky. Would he be burned at the stake? Have you ever wished you could see through the eyes of an angel? Now you can. His name is Mark, and he is a watcher. In his notebook he has carefully recorded the experience of certain teenagers who lived in exciting times in history. Meet Marcus, who faced death under Nero; Miriam, who barely escapes starvation during the siege of Jerusalem in A.D. 70; and Peter, who lived in the Alps and got to see the pope. View Martin Luther through the eyes of one of his pupils. Meet young sailor Geoffrey as he cares for a very seasick John Knox. Visit Bohemia and the Tower of London and relive many other pivotal events in salvation history. Remember "Let them eat cake"? Monique was there. Through her eyes you will have a ringside seat for the French Revolution. Rachel will take you through the great disappointment of 1844, and you will experience the end of time through the eyes of Michael. What a fun way to learn both the facts of history and the fundamentals of the faith. This retelling of the great controversy will inspire a new love for those beliefs that were preserved at such a high cost by those who went before us.

Where he takes a very complicated subject and simplifies it in such and elegant way that it is easy understood by all without losing or changing the core elements of the subject. I am enjoying every page of it.

His explanations of the illusive concepts of Kabbalah are easily understood, unlike the original text of the Sephir Yetzirah and some other books I've attempted to read. I also have more insight into the Tarot as a result.
