In his senior year of high school, late bloomer Ryan Ward has just begun to feel the magic of baseball—the thrill of catching a wicked slider, of throwing a runner out, of training hard and playing hard. His friend Josh, the star of the team, has helped Ryan push his limits. But when Josh clearly pushes the limits too far, Ryan is faced with a heartbreaking dilemma: he must choose between his love for the game and his sense of integrity.

Painting the Black, by Carl Deuker

From School Library Journal Grade 8 Up. During the summer before his senior year, Ryan Ward is thrilled when a kid his age moves in across the street. He's even more thrilled when he learns that Josh Daniels is a star athlete. The two play catch for hours and Ryan secretly dreams of catching for the varsity team in the spring. He watches in awe as Josh proceeds to become the school's starting quarterback and leads the football team to a terrific season, but he is unsettled by the aggressive side of his friend's personality. When baseball season finally arrives, Ryan makes the team as a third-string catcher. He eventually becomes a starter because he's the only one who can handle Josh's hard slider. Just before the championship game, Ryan stumbles upon and stops an assault on a girl in the school. He realizes that one of the masked assailants is Josh, but telling the authorities proves to be an agonizing decision. The book ends somewhat ironically, yet realistically, with Josh signing a multimillion dollar professional baseball contract and receiving a tap on the wrist for his crime. Ryan, meanwhile, enrolls in the local junior college. Rather than producing a stereotyped high school jock, Deuker portrays Josh as a complex and multidimensional character. Ryan is a player who succeeds with his head, rather than through sheer talent. And while he learns about the subtleties of baseball, he also learns about the subtleties of life. A well-crafted sports novel that delivers without becoming didactic or boring.?Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, ILCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 8-12. After a disastrous fall from a tree, senior Ryan Ward wrote off baseball. But he is swept back into the game when cocky, charismatic Josh Daniels--a star quarterback with the perfect spiral pass as well as a pitcher with a mean slider--moves into the neighborhood. Josh is adept at placing his pitches on the line between fair and foul ("painting the black"), and in his sweep to sports fame, he lives his life much the same way. Ryan, whose spot on the team hinges on his ability to catch Josh's pitches, soon learns that more than a team slot is at stake. The well-written sports scenes--baseball and football--will draw reluctant readers, but it is Ryan's moral courage that will linger when the reading is done. Candace Smith

From Kirkus Reviews For Ryan Ward, 17, the baseball diamond leads to much more than just a winning season in this exciting and moving novel from Deuker (Heart of a Champion, 1993, etc.). Until Josh Daniels and his family move in across the street during the summer, Ryan seems destined for mediocrity at Seattle's Crown Hill High. Eager for a friend, Ryan tags after the charismatic, athletically gifted Josh, a pitcher; while they play catch, Ryan realizes that he enjoys catching and thinks of trying out for the varsity team. But Ryan's plans are put on hold when autumn rolls around and Josh concentrates on the football team. Throughout the novel, his single-minded, nearly ruthless ambition is shown as the opposite of Ryan's nagging insecurities. The image of himself as Josh's toady drives Ryan to begin working out months before baseball season. Josh's careful maneuvering during practice shows Ryan at his best, and he makes the varsity cut; the team's unprecedented success is achieved largely through the symbiosis between the boys as pitcher and catcher. There the connection ends: Josh, master of high school politics, grows more arrogant while Ryan blossoms with newfound confidence. A championship season seems clinched until Josh, in a wolf mask, assaults a female classmate who has embarrassed him. Ryan interrupts the assault and recognizes Josh. Deuker, adept at capturing the thrills during the game, also proves talented at dramatizing Ryan's torment in the face of his friend's deeds; the depiction of a boy coming into his own is resonant and inspiring. The True Life of HighSchool Baseball Players By the kid PAINTING THE BLACKBY: Carl Deuker" A thrilling sports story "By the title you think it's about painting. But it's not, it's about baseball. As soon as you read the first page you'll be hooked, and find out it's about a lot more.Ryan Ward is the type of kid who works at home on the weekends, but isn't a geek or made fun of. He'd do enough to get through the day so he can go back to his safe little room in his safe little house. But when Josh Danils moves in at midnight Ryan's life will change in away he never expected. Ryan is your typical senior who isn't very athleticSits around really doesn't have any friends. When Ryan goes over to introduce himself to josh ,a guy who is 6-2 200 pounds good-looking guy, they end up playing baseball at the park. Josh asks Ryan to catch for him Ryan is hesitant because he hurt is ankle and it never healed right but to his surprise josh says he's the best catcher he's ever seen. Josh soon teaches Ryan about life. One day josh packs up all his stuff and goes andTries out for football. Well that's when Ryan starts to realize it's about attaching the day instead of just getting through it. So Ryan works out to get into shape every day. Finally baseball comes Ryan knows josh will make it but Ryan's not sure if he will but josh saysHe will. But to his surprise he's the only one who can catch josh's slider, Ryan makes the team . Ryan's life is about to turn upside down in away he never expected. Ryan soon finds out josh is popular and feeds off it. But Ryan is proud of him self he is athletic and has made friends Ryan emends up having the best year of his life on the baseball team when his lifeStarts to change.

The best book I have ever read By Spencer Over the past two weeks I have been completely engrossed with a book by Carl Deuker, Painting the Black I was particularly attracted by the fact that the story was centered around high school baseball. As an eighth grader who will be attending high school next year, the idea of reading a book placed in a high school was especially attractive. However, as I was soon to learn, this book deals with even greater, important themes. Ryan Ward is a shy high-school teenager, enjoying the summer before his senior year. A fanatic of baseball, who also plays catcher, Ryan has finally developed enough skill and courage to join the high school baseball team next spring. The cause of such a change in this usually timid boy is his new friend and neighbor, Josh Daniels. Josh is the complete opposite of Ryan, except for their mutual love of baseball. This common interest spurs their immediate friendship, as they spend the whole summer training for next baseball season. As school starts, Ryan and Josh loose sight of each other. While still being on friendly terms, Josh is extremely extroverted, and becomes one of the most popular kids at school. Ryan, on the other hand is rather introverted and has trouble associating with Josh's group of friends. However, as baseball season commences, their friendship returns to its original stage. As the season progresses, Ryan gains confidence and popularity. Unfortunately, Ryan is plagued by the knowledge of Josh's inappropriate behavior towards a girl, one day after practice. With this information Ryan is split between turning in the star pitcher or having a chance at winning the championship and keeping his new-found popularity. The multitude of themes addressed in this fiction book makes it appropriate for age groups 12 years and older. The issue of rape and maintaining one integrity is especially important and should be dealt with around this age. Furthermore, it never hurts to reinforce these ideas as one grows older and faces various tribulations. Also, the storyline itself was strait forward and easy to comprehend. There is no doubt that this book will engage any reader over the age of 12. I would rate this book five star because it kept me in the book and I never wanted to put it down.

Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, "show me a hero and I'llwrite you a tragedy".Josh is certainly a local hero, as heleads his high school to great things on the athletic fields, but his personality and character are on the edge, and sometimes over the edge.I grew up with the idea that leaders, whether they be in the classroom or on the ballfield had to have a clean slate when it comes to your character, perhaps this book is making a societal statement that things have changed. We read about college and even high school athletes who have had run-ins with the law and they are freed to continue to play and to cause more ills. What a shame...despite the horrible feeling I got as I read about Josh the book is a quick fast read, that will lure you in and keep you turning pages faster than a Randy Johnson fastball.Enjoy...also try _Heart of a Champion_ by Deuker, and _ Bull Catcher_ by Alden Carter.

I love the cute three-dimensional penguins and the gorgeous illustrations. The rhythm and flow isn't quite as smooth as Ten Little Ladybugs, nor does it have the digits printed on the page. But, still it's a very cute book, and I have a couple penguin lovers that are quite pleased with it.

Fascinating Topic By Morgan Daimler A Kitchen Witch’s World of Magical Food is an enchanting look at the magic and mystery of food, from the power of tea to edible flowers, from seasonal treats to food poppets. I really enjoyed the variety of information that the author included and her innovative approach to food magic. I've read many different books on magical uses for herbs and several on kitchen witchcraft but nothing like this book; it challenges the reader to re-think the way every day things can be used while offering good information and fascinating tidbits for the reader to contemplate. A delightful book full of recipes and food lore that would be a great addition to any magical practitioner’s library.

By TL Clark This is a lovely book filled with useful tips and good humour.I especially like all the positive things said about cake! ;-)I got this on Kindle, but actually there's things I'd like to refer back to frequently, so it's possibly better as a hard copy book.Really good 'starter' book to get an understanding of what each food 'means'.There's recipes and detailed explanations of food, and even some helpful correspondence charts at the back.Well worth a read!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loved this book! By Kindle Customer I have been treading samples of Rachel Patterson's books but liked this one most. I bought the book and glad I did! It includes recipes, information on ingredients and as a new learner to the ways of kitchen witchery, I felt this book has been the best I have read so far. The asking price for this book was reasonable and worth the money.

Packer on the Christian Life: Knowing God in Christ, Walking by the Spirit (Theologians on the Christian Life), by Sam Storms

    Review

“The writings of J. I. Packer have been a great help to many believers in many ways. It is therefore most welcome that Sam Storms has synthesized insights from those writings in this helpful, accessible book. I’m sure Pastor Storms agrees that the very best thing about his book would be if it encouraged readers to dive into Packer’s works themselves.”—Mark A. Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History, University of Notre Dame; author, Protestantism: A Very Short Introduction

“This is one of the best books on J. I. Packer I have read. It gets to the heart of this great theologian’s central concern, what Henry Scougal called ‘the life of God in the soul of man.’ For those of us who have sat at Packer’s feet for many years, this is a delightful reprise and refresher. For new Christians just getting to know Packer, fasten your seat belts!”—Timothy George, Founding Dean, Beeson Divinity School; General Editor, Reformation Commentary on Scripture

“The most noteworthy feature of this book is the author’s ability to assimilate vast quantities of data, condense it, and put it into a systematic format. This begins with a wonderful biographical chapter and then proceeds to Packer’s theology. A brief version of the systematic theology that Packer has long promised the world, this book is a triumph of scholarship.”—Leland Ryken, Emeritus Professor of English, Wheaton College

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Insights from the Puritans through the lens of Packer By J.W. Wartick Packer on the Christian Life by Sam Storms summarizes much of J.I. Packer’s thoughts that answer the question “How now shall we live?” I’ve enjoyed Storms’ works before and have been curious to learn more about Packer, so I was looking forward to this read. The book starts with some brief biographical information on Packer. Then, we are quickly thrust into core aspects of his theological framework. In particular, Packer emphasized the atonement as central to any Christian understanding of life or doctrine. The Bible is seen as the authority for the Christian life. These early chapters are used to set the stage for a more holistic approach found afterwards.Packer’s stance is heavily influenced by Puritanism. The Puritans have suffered from a bit of a bad reputation, and some of it has been deserved. However, the insights the Puritans gave into living purely (sorry) are worth reading about, and Packer’s view of the Christian life highlights them throughout. The battle against indwelling sin, the definitions and search for holiness, and the like; all are colored with Puritan lenses, and this provides a different approach than some of the other books in the series. After the holistic approach found in the middle section of the book, individual topics are addressed. These include the work of the Holy Spirit, prayer, discerning God’s will, and enduring suffering. The chapters on prayer and enduring suffering are particularly edifying. Packer offers biblical answers to perceived unanswered prayers as well as insight into how to pray and why and when (always). His approach to enduring suffering leans heavily towards a Calvinistic response, and Storms presents it in a pastoral, applicable manner.Storms admirably handles Packer’s view on spiritual gifts. Packer is a cessationist but seems to have a rather moderating position, whereas Storms has been an outspoken continuationist. He fairly presents Packer’s view on the topic of miraculous gifts without criticism–an appropriate stance given the purpose of the book.Packer on the Christian Life is another good entry into the “Theologians on the Christian Life” series. I enjoyed it quite a bit, though I think the entries on Luther and John Newton were slightly better. It comes recommended. The Good+Good insight on varied practical topics, including prayer+Makes accessible, in one place, much of Packer’s work+Highlights contributions possible from PuritanismThe Bad-Could use more exposition in addition to all the quotesDisclaimer: I received a review copy of this book from the publisher. I know many friends and have heard from plenty of others the importance of reading biographies, especially of Christians in the history of the faith to see their story and how they lived their lives for Jesus. I get all of this. I just don’t like biographies. But I have been incredibly pleased and have enjoyed the Theologians on the Christian Life series from Crossway. I have now read three of books in this series, and have thoroughly devoured and highlighted heavily each of these books. Most recently I have read Packer on the Christian Life. Along with not reading many biographies, I have not read any books by J.I. Packer. I know. I know. Give me a break. I’m planning to read Knowing God later this month. In case you are like me, J.I. Packer is one of the most well-known and respected evangelicals of the 20th Century and continues to have an impact on many lives even today as he is now in his eighties. He has written and spoken on just about every theological topic, and in Packer on the Christian Life, author Sam Storm walks through many topics and areas of the Christian life looking at J.I. Packer’s personal life and faith as well as bringing in many of his thoughts from books and other scholarly writings. While looking at Packer’s life, Storms says, “The Christian life for Packer can largely be summed up in the single word, piety, which in his writings is typically used as a synonym for godliness and holiness. Today the word spirituality is more commonly seen, and Packer himself is often found using the two interchangeably” (Kindle Loc. 400). Godliness and holiness. While reading and after finishing this book and looking back over my notes, I can see that much of Packer’s personal life and writings shows both of these words. Every aspect of the Christian life for Packer must consider Godliness and holiness and are we growing in both. Are we becoming more Godly and more Holy in the name of Christ?I had planned to read Knowing God at the end of the summer, but I am very thankful that I read this biography of J.I. Packer’s life and his writings first. Packer on the Christian Life reveals the life and considers the writings of Packer while walking through important areas of theology and the Christian life. I would thoroughly recommend this book to all Christians to want to know how to pursue God more fully and grow deeper in their pursuit of holiness. I am appreciative to Sam Storms for this book, and I am more appreciative to J.I. Packer for his passion for Christ and pursuit of holiness in all that he has done in his life in order to bring others to know Him more.

The Packer Goldmine: Leaving Us Rich and Hungry for More By Zach Barnhart The Theologians on the Christian Life series produced by Crossway gives a select and exclusive list of theologians a truly high honor in being recognized for their everlasting impact on the Church. It’s certainly hard to pick only a dozen or so men who are worthy of such a treatment, given the vast expanse of two thousand years of Church history we’ve had and the thousands of men who’ve been vital to Christianity as a whole. Given these circumstances, you can start to get a glimpse into how exponentially higher of an honor it is for a theologian who is still living to be elected to this prestigious class.Apart from C.S. Lewis, J.I. Packer is widely regarded today as the most influential writer of the twentieth century. That in and of itself speaks volumes about the life and ministry of this English Anglican. His writings and ministry have served as a bridge of sorts, linking a deep, scholarly, and high-reaching knowledge of God to laypeople of all backgrounds through practical language, examples, and practices. There has perhaps been no other figure this side of 1900 that has so expertly blended Biblical interpretation with Biblical application than J.I. Packer. To not “hang his jerseys in the rafters” with his inclusion in this series would have been a serious misstep; a bigger one would be for the Christian to miss out on what Packer’s writing has to offer us.Make no mistake; Packer’s writing not to glorify Packer, considering that he is too busy glorifying God at the expense of drawing attention to himself. Early on in my understanding and study of Reformed theology, I knew J.I. Packer was a voice to listen to, but didn’t know much about him (a.k.a. I didn’t see him writing a lot of blog posts, he’s not on Twitter, and didn’t have many flashy quotes I was familiar with). This is intentional on Packer’s part. To me, Packer’s perceived existence out of the public eye is not a matter of being a rookie with technology and media, but to him, the Christian life has been centered on one idea: piety (32). Faithfully serving in his sphere, oftentimes behind his typewriter, is Packer’s way of faithfully committing himself to a holiness that keeps Christ at the front. With an author like J.I. Packer who’s written on nearly every subject out there, what does this kind of book really have to offer us? What I love about Packer on the Christian Life is that Sam Storms has brilliantly given us a much deeper look into some of the key themes that have been anchor points for Packer throughout his ministry. Instead of requiring us to build understanding of Packer’s teaching of, for example, sanctification, over a collection of a dozen books, Storms does the gold-mining for us in a sense, leaving us rich with understanding when we’re done and yet leaving us longing for more. Some biographies/author-focused books try to tell the whole story, to cover every inch of their history and thought. Others focus so much on their lives that we have no better idea of what they thought than before! But in Packer, Sam Storms has made sure to focus on the majors, hint at the minors, and make much of Jesus through Packer’s words. This is really helpful for all of us no matter our familiarity with J.I.’s works. One of the best chapters in the entire book is the second one, “The Central Reference Point for Christian Living: Atonement.” In it, Storms positions the atonement as the most critical hinge-point of the gospel — Packer "demands it — not by direct assertion but in the way he conceives of Christ’s atoning sacrifice as the foundation and source of everything in one’s Christian experience. As far as Packer is concerned, there is but one explanation for why there is such a thing as Christian living. It is found in this singular truth: Jesus Christ died for sinners!" (34)There are other key highlights in this treatment of Packer’s theology. Storms gives us a great account of the doctrine of indwelling sin according to Romans 7:14–25, devoting a whole chapter to it. He also helps us in seeing Packer’s labor to make our prayer lives centered on and around our knowledge of God. Ironically enough, one of my favorite chapters of the book was to watch Storms, a continuationist himself, start to draw out and sometimes even affirm the “careful cessationism” of J.I. Packer in chapter 7.What I walked away with in reading this book is a much larger appreciation of Packer’s far-reaching and deep-running theology. His book Knowing God is a prime example to me of the a miraculous balance of narrow and high theology for wide and vast audiences. Yet his whole ministry has fit in this mold. Packer is the theologian every man can learn from, whether he be new to the faith or a tenured senior pastor.A particularly touching chapter from the book was the final one, in which Packer, through Storms, teaches us how to end well. We would love to see our eighty-eight year old brother and friend live decades longer. But I think we’re all even more excited to know he is fringes away from being with the glory he’s so strived to point us towards. Thank you Sam Storms for handling Packer’s teachings with precision and care. Thank you Crossway for such a Christ-centered series. Thank you J.I. Packer for teaching us all how to start well, run well, and end well.Stars: 5.0/5.0Note: I was provided this book via Crossway in exchange for my review.

Egypt is a mysterious and magical place. And thanks to Mohamed Nazmy, tens of thousands of travelers have experienced it. Nazmy, a self-made businessman, travel expert, Quest Travel company founder, mentor and spiritual consciousness-raiser, builds bridges between people from the West to the Middle East, so they may come to know each other as friends. Raised in Cairo, and educated in both Egypt and the USA, he believes that this is how peace in the world is created. Through terrorism and 9/11, political turmoil and revolution, Nazmy witnessed barriers of fear, intolerance, and prejudice wedging themselves between worlds. Yet he never stopped believing that if he could bring travelers to his beloved country, and expose them to the magic, they would realize that regardless of race, religion, creed, or belief system, we are family. This is the work that Nazmy gives his life to. Through these pages, you'll travel deeply into the life and work of a visionary. There are stories here about Nazmy from the well-known teachers, scholars, and authors who have traversed Egypt under his guidance. You'll be entertained by many rich and meaningful travel experiences through ancient and modern Egypt. You'll meet noted Egyptologists, as well as the loyal employees of Quest Travel, and revel in the antics of Nazmy and beloved friend and Egyptologist, Emil Shaker. You'll witness how Nazmy unites spiritual truth with his great love for people. And hopefully, you'll find through all of these stories the inspiration to spread your own message of love and tolerance. You'll become what Nazmy calls a "Peace Ambassador." This is more than a story of travel and tourism. This is a story of how one man has harnessed the magic and mystery of Egypt to create peace, one relationship at a time.

This is a book full of love and peace. It reflects the love that is Mohamed Nazmy’s religion and the peace for which he and Sharlyn and the numerous others featured in this book have dedicated their lives, and for which we all long. I finished the book moved to tears, and, no, I am not the only one. I know of at least one other who had that experience. In order to write this book Sharlyn not only openly shares her own transformational experiences in Egypt and as a result of her relationshp with Mohamed Nazmy, she also shares her interviews with him, his staff, his family and eleven tour leaders who have taken groups on spiritual pilgrimages to Egypt. These include spiritual teachers and best-selling authors the likes of Jean Houston and Gregg Braden. Each one being deeply touched, and transformed by their experiences there and by their relationship with Mohamed. Each one becoming, not only Mohamed’s friend, but “family”.This book takes you on a journey from the ancient days and teachings of Egypt to the most recent events of the Egyptian revolution - the overthrow of Morsi and the election of Egypt’s current president el-Sisi. This book takes you from the birth of Mohamed Nazmy (including the auspicious signs of his gift to Egypt and the world even at his birth) to his views on the current situation in Egypt and his ever-present commitment to create unforgettable, heart-opening, life-transforming, experiences for travelers to Egypt, creating “peace ambassadors” one person at a time.To quote from the book, “We are witnessing incredible changes on our planet, but always, the best of our spiritual teachings offer inclusion, forgiveness, care for our fellow humans and care for the planet that we live on. They also teach us about faith, trust, and love. This is true for the ancient teachings as well as the very best of Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist or pagan teachings.”And this is true for Mohamed Nazmy and Sharlyn Hidalgo. Thank you Mohamed. Thank you Sharlyn. Thank you Egypt.

Quest Tours is the "ultimate" for really experiencing all the love and wonders Egypt has to offer. Sharlyn has written a fantastic book! She has captured the essence of "love and oneness" that Mohamed and Emil give you from their hearts. The Nile, the Temples, and the glorious Afandina your luxurious home away from home. A trip to Egypt is a gift to yourself that will keep on giving for the rest of your life. I felt like the pages in Sharlyn's book were telling my story when I went down the Nile with Quest Tours last spring! Mohamed Nazmy is one of the most extraordinary people you will ever meet! He will steal your heart with love.

Maria Kvilhaug explores the parables of Old Norse myths, revealing spiritual mysteries and metaphysical speculation at the heart of Old Norse Paganism. The Edda poems were most probably created by Viking Age skalds who knew the art of making metaphorical riddles and how to hide messages behind words.

Many poems are veritably incomprehensible without the knowledge it takes to decipher the riddles. When Snorri in the 1220's realized that young people were beginning to lose their understanding of the ancient form of Norse poetry, he wrote his book so that young students of poetry may decipher that which has been subtly spoken, adding that knowledge has been cleverly disguised in runes. Snorri based his work on old poems almost forgotten at the time, and it was not until 400 years later that an Icelandic family presented a secret leather manuscript that had remained hidden in their family for 500 years, to Bishop Brynjolv Sveinsson in 1643.

Why was the manuscript hidden throughout the centuries? What were the real messages behind Old Norse poetry? Are the Norse myths truly just funny stories about gods, trolls and giants, or do they hide some deeper insights?

Kvilhaug has researched the archeaology and background to the Edda Poems and Sagas of Northern literature, and historical folk lore data. She has translated the original ancient Norse manuscripts and approaches the Poems as metaphor for traditional ritual and rites of passage in the ancient cultures of Scandinavia. Her insights open up the poems to reveal a whole new world where The tree of life, the red-gold of wisdom and the goddess of death and renewal are central to an almost forgotten way of life.

Written in a warm and friendly style, this book is informative, revolutionary and enlightening. It will change the way we view the Poetic Eddas, and perhaps help rebuild an understanding of the pagan past of the Northern peoples. It may even restore a rationalized familiarity with their true Northern god(s) and goddess(es).

The Seed of Yggdrasill: Deciphering the Hidden Messages in Old Norse Myths Heritage edition, by Maria Kvilhaug

Review I give this book at sterling 5/5 it is excellent, well written, presented well and all around a worthwhile read! I recommend that heathens especially grab a copy and go check out Maria s videos as most of the book is the tome used throughout these...it is truly educational and enlightening!Maria Kvillhaug may not be a name that many people are aware of unless you have frequented YouTube or found her website (LadyoftheLabyrinth). I found it when I was doing research on initiation rituals and was almost giddy when I discovered her numerous YouTube videos discussing her views on various aspects of Norse Mythology. Heathens might know her from her thesis paper The Maiden with the Mead-a Goddess of Initiation Rituals in Old Norse Myths, and if not, they should go grab a free copy of this paper. It was one of the first few thesis papers I read when I began to doubt the overwhelming references to the Edda. I found her paper eye-opening and frankly wondered why this paper had not made it into the list of readings for heathens.

After the course of watching several videos, I began to find what Maria said not only intriguing but down right conflicting with modern heathenrys ideas of our myths. I found this view refreshing, as it was not a repeat of what we already assumed but was a completely different view of myths. While I don t always agree with her interpretation of things, her research is flawless. She obviously knows what she is talking about. She is also approachable, untainted by preconceived notions. In heathenry today, we often tend to only look to the Edda as a place to understand everything, but this understanding seems to be taken in many ways out of context. What we know about the myths comes from various periods of research and seems to have been accepted as fact instead of being constantly updated with new ideas. --- --L Hunter, THE KENAZ KINDRED (CAN)The Seed of Yggdrasill is a controversial and insightful exploration of Norse myths from a pantheistic perspective. Maria Kvilhaug is to be congratulated for bringing the ancient tales alive again for both those who already know something of them and for those who have yet to drink from this inexhaustible well. This is a valuable work for the student of myth and an essential one for those who would revive the Northern Tradition. -- --Richard Rudgley, BBC4. . an outstanding text that anyone who is interested in the Old Norse Myths can delve straight into the heart of Norse Paganism and come out with a deep understanding of the whole belief system. Maria s translation and interpretations of the meanings of the Edda poems are brilliant. --Jade Ashcroft-ENLIGHTENED TIMES MAGAZINE, (uk)

Read other input rom readers where the pages faded or binding breaks, so I waited for this edition. The quality of the book is outstanding. Them information inside, is apparent, Ms Kvilhaug did her research. So much information is in the reader's hands, with references, and appendix. I am only a quarter of the way into the book and certain my judgement will remain a constant.

Having purchased the print-on-demand edition before, I was glad to discover that the problems with that edition (namely, the strangely unclear font/print and the flimsy binding) were fully resolved in this new "real" print run. The new edition is excellent in the quality of print, paper and binding, and is also more compact, which to me was a pleasant surprise! Having said that, the print-on-demand edition was not terrible - but its technical quality did not warrant the price; which the new edition certainly does. Now, to the content. The book is a thoughtful and insightful analysis of the metaphors, references, and other forms employed in Edda poetry, which leads the author to conclude that the Norse myths actually describe a well-developed Pantheist cosmology and philosophy, sharing similarities with ancient Indian religion and with classical Mystery schools.Ms. Kvilhaug makes a persuasive case, and the book is a joy to read. While it lacks somewhat in brevity and could probably benefit from more exact professional editing, these minor deficiencies are amply compensated by how unique this book really is. This is a passionate journey by a multi-talented author fully immersed in her subject. As such, it contains not only scholarship but the author's own experience and life wisdom. In my view, this book is a must for anyone seriously interested in Norse mythology, in Scandinavian history, and beyond that - in the comparative study of religions, mythology and spirituality.

He tried to explain it to me but frankly I just dont get it or care about it. We've gotten a few different minecraft books and they are awesome for my son. His reading has really taken off and he finds this interesting. Great for extra summer reading.

Wonderful series for Young Readers who Love MineCraft By Jeffrey H Wood Wonderful Books for Young Readers who Love MineCraftBoth of my kids (7-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy) are reading the unofficial MineCraft book series, and they adore these books. My son is so enthusiastic that he will describe them to me chapter by chapter as he works his way through the story. Both of my kids love to draw scenes from these books with their crayons, and my son is so inspired that he's begun writing his own novelettes.

Aside from using minecraft terminology, which he found to be pretty cool, the writing was terrible. I don't understand how it made it through publishing, and it was sitting for sale on a shelf in Barnes and Noble labeled "top sellers." I'm just shocked. At times, it sounded like a computer had translated the book from another language--very poor use of a thesaurus. The flow of the action and narrative was awkward, even ridiculous at times. No depth to the dialogue, lots of violence, superficial themes. There didn't seem to be a lot of effort put into the plot. Random stuff just kept happening and happening. Sometimes a huge battle was compressed into a sentence or two, while a short exchange was beat over your head with redundancy. I just used my silliest voices and cracked myself up while reading this ridiculous book to my son.

By B.Hammond As another reviewer has said, the sequels to The Academy have been progressively more difficult to get through. I wrote Mr. Leito after finishing Book 2 to express my complaints about the inconsistencies in Book 2's characterisation of Asa. He said he'd take my comments into consideration when writing Book 3, so when it came out I gave it an honest try. I'm writing this review after slogging through 90% of the story, and while I'll force myself to finish the book, I'm done with this series. Asa Palmer is written as a whiny idiot fantasizing about Winggame during a time when much bigger issues are at hand. As this book is mostly his internal dialogue, it drags, even during what should be tense action scenes. Although he's fifteen, he has been through too much at this point to be so tactically ignorant, and I can't take it anymore.

By ZP While i thoroughly enjoyed this book i dont feel like it was as great as the first two. as others have stated this takes place during summer break and while it continues the over arching plot it felt a little rushed. I could be biased though because 350 pages is a bit on the short side for my reading tastes and i felt like there was so much more story that could have been told with this book without the internal monologue. I would still recommend this book if you loved the first two and would say to check out his baggers series. i believe he has a few others as well. Hopefully he will focus solely on the academy for the next little while and pump out some lengthy sequels.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Still Pretty Good By Bbates I'm a huge fan of Chad Leito and the Academy series in general so it is hard for me not to leave a five star review. The book was really good except for a few things that kind of bothered me. One it is not during a semester so it is almost like a novella Academy 2.5. I would say about 75% of the book is Asa talking to himself. The action stops in the middle of a scene for the character to have massive internal conflict sometimes in the space of a couple seconds. I thought it made the pacing of the book feel slow. After awhile I got tired of the character constant monologue of his thoughts.

By Martijn13Maart1970 I have read a lot of the existing 'popular' books on the subject of the Riemann Hypothesis (RH) and these three books by Matthew Watkins provide the most complete picture. By this I mean you get all the facts, history and current research on RH that other books also provide, but this trilogy goes deeper, yet in such a way that it remains readable. The subject of RH is in fact very deep and probably only really understandable for the few specialist mathematicians that work with it daily, but still, it also touches on the fundamental and seemingly simple subject of the link between addition and multiplication. We all know what addition is, and multiplication - or don't we really? Since this is the key to a real understanding of RH, the link between addition and multiplication is extensively elaborated, up the point of metaphysics. The conclusion is startling after all - when you start with the natural numbers, you stumble onto the seemingly simple prime numbers, and eventually in our voyage of discovery of how these primes are divided along the natural number line, we see there is an underlying grand scheme that (might, provide RH is true) goes beyond our wildest dream. But the question is, what was there first, our 'primitive' counting, or this vast structure?I highly recommend reading all three books, since these books go beyond the subject of RH itself, and explains why mathematics and numbers are part of our existence.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. don't just believe me, check out these reviews: By Matthew Watkins "The Secrets of Creation trilogy is one of the most remarkable works of maths popularisation that I have read. Matthew Watkins has a gift for exposition, a gushing passion for his subject and a completely fresh way of approaching basic – and not so basic – mathematical ideas. He has written a brilliantly original work that is both whimsical and cosmically profound. I would recommend it to anyone." Alex Bellos, author of Alex's Adventures in Numberland and Alex Through the Looking-Glass"The author is at pains to make his exposition readily accessible to any intelligent reader...This is an unusual and fascinating book, which even experts on prime number theory are likely to find of interest." Prof. Brian Josephson, Times Higher Education, 9th June 2011"Many thanks for sending me a copy of your fascinating-looking book... Although I have not had the opportunity to go through it yet in any detail, I should say that it is exactly the kind of thing that I would have enjoyed tremendously and found extremely illuminating in my younger days—in fact, I think this is still the case and I look forward enormously to looking at it in more detail when I get the time. I showed it to my wife, Vanessa, who is the head of the mathematics department at Abingdon School, and she was equally thrilled by the presentation." Sir Roger Penrose (Oxford University)"Very kind of you to send your new book. It's very well produced and attractive. I think you've made it really interesting, with well-chosen contents. The illustrations are excellent as well. It deserves to sell a lot of copies." Ian Stewart (Warwick University)"The pictures alone will attract readers on this stimulating odyssey into the magic and mystery of numbers." Clifford Pickover"[U]nlike the numerous popular books that have probed deeply into the beauty and mystery of the prime numbers and the Riemann Hypothesis (such as the ones by M. du Sautoy, J. Derbyshire, etc.), this one is unique in many aspects. It is the only book geared towards general audience that actually gives an account of the complexity of the distribution of the prime numbers while containing almost no equations. So, how did the author achieve this? Through the radiant wit of the illustrations paired up with the exceptional writing. Additionally, his success is due to the simplicity of the explanations, which in an engaging manner reveal complex concepts with such clarity as to make the book accessible to children and non-mathematicians. Lastly, the exposition of the beauty of the harmonic decomposition is superb. ...Every argument in the book is backed up vividly by numerous illustrative examples and user-friendly visualizations. The illustrator, Matt Tweed, has provided brilliant drawings that convey and explain the mathematical ideas and concepts as they develop throughout the book. What could have been rigorous text saturated with formulas is replaced by the many entertaining illustrations which also offer an intuitive understanding of the technical complexities behind the text...(My 3-year old son literally could not put this book down; he had many questions and comments about what happens in the drawings.)This is a very unusual and inspiring book with the potential to spark interest even among experts on prime number theory. The exciting and original presentation is instructive and stimulates further study. Diving into the mystery of numbers in this book leaves one thirsting for the subsequent two volumes." Ana Momidic-Reyna, Mathematical Association of America Reviews"This is a fantastic book. A fabulous book. A splendiferous book! It's easy enough to say what the book is about: it explains some extremely fascinating properties of the distribution of prime numbers. But that doesn't tell you why it's so great; books about prime numbers are a dime a dozen.First of all, Watkins (with the help of the illustrations, which I'll get to shortly) manages to explain everything extremely clearly, beginning from first principles—and I really mean first principles; he begins with the definition of the natural numbers and goes from there. The only thing that could possibly stand between elementary school students and an appreciation of this book is their reading ability and attention span, NOT their mathematical abilities. But—and here is the truly astounding thing—I, a PhD student who has studied math my whole life, could not put this book down. Not only was I not bored, I learned new things! How is this possible? Partly, it was due to the fresh, creative, insightful way everything is explained, coupled with excellent writing; partly, it was due to the subject, which starts conventionally enough but soon wanders into fascinating territory unfamiliar to many mathematicians (including this one). A book like this, accessible to young children and engaging to adults, is a rare and wonderful accomplishment indeed!Oh yes, and the illustrations. The illustrations!" Brent Yorgey (The Math Less Traveled blog)"The first two Secrets of Creation books completely blew me away when I discovered them last year. I read through them in matter of days in a state of disbelief that there existed such an accessible and patient (and cartoon based!) explanation of the Riemann Hypothesis and related matters. It is a monumental achievement." Paul Stepahin (The Exploratorium, San Francisco)

“‘Supersonic Man versus the Pickled Tomatoes’!” George Brown said as he read the title of the comic book. “This one looks awesome. The squirty red stuff looks just like blood.”

It was Tuesday afternoon. George and his pals Alex and Chris were hanging out at the Made for Mutants Comic Book Shop.

Chris shook his head. “I already have that one,” he said. “Supersonic Man defeats the tomatoes with garlic, the same way you would ward off vampires.”

“Sounds like he’s making tomato sauce,” George said. “Maybe he should be called Supersonic Chef.”

George and Alex started laughing. But not Chris. He took his comic books seriously.

“They must have the one I’m looking for somewhere,” Chris said. He started thumbing through another stack of comics. “I just have to keep searching.”

“Why don’t you ask Rodney?” Alex asked Chris. He nodded in the direction of the owner of the store.

“Because looking for just the right comic book is half the fun,” Chris explained.

George didn’t see what was so fun about searching through stacks and stacks of comic books. Sure, comics were fun to read, but this didn’t seem all that different from going shopping with his mother. And shopping was boring.

“Hey, what’s this?” George asked suddenly. He pointed to a sheet of paper taped to the counter. The paper said Pay It Forward Day Sign-Up Sheet.

Alex looked over George’s shoulder. “It’s the sign-up sheet for Pay It Forward Day,” he said.

“I get that,” George replied. “But what’s Pay It Forward Day?”

“Oh, right. You moved to Beaver Brook after Pay It Forward Day last year,” Alex remembered. “It’s a community-service day we have every year. People help out with things around town. Last year my family helped clean the park. The year before, we painted lampposts.”

George looked at the sheet. There were a lot of things you could do on Pay It Forward Day—collect coats for needy people, plant flowers around City Hall, read to little kids in the library . . .

“What are you doing this year?” he asked Alex.

“We’re signed up to serve food to homeless families at the shelter,” Alex replied. “You want to come with us?”

“Sure,” George agreed. Serving food sounded a lot better than collecting coats or planting flowers. Food was always fun.

“You want to help at the shelter this year, too, Chris?” Alex called across the store.

“Okay,” Chris answered without looking up from the stacks and stacks of comic books.

“What is it you like so much about this Supersonic dude, anyway?” George asked Chris.

“He’s cool,” Chris explained. “He has the power to travel through time and space, but he uses his mind to fight the bad guys. This one time, he was trapped in a basement with no way out. He found an old metal pipe and turned it into a torpedo. Then he blasted a tunnel and . . .”

Chris kept talking, but George wasn’t listening anymore. He was too busy worrying about the disaster brewing in his belly. There were bubbles in there. Hundreds of them. And they were going crazy.

That could only mean one thing. The magical super burp was back.

George knew that trouble was on its way. After all, it had happened to him many times before.
