I picked this book out as a gift for my friend who is getting married - I thought - a book on challah - so perfect! Well, the book was so pretty and intriguing when I got it in the mail - I just had to read it myself - and I’m so glad I did! This book is a treasure! I just ordered another 3 to give to multiple friends who I know will love this book as much as I did!While it seems like it might be a simple book on challah baking, this is really so much more!Rochie Pinson weaves together historical facts, scientific discoveries, psychological studies, literary references, and of course plenty of fascinating Jewish sources to create a book that is both engrossing and uplifting. I stopped everything I was doing and didn’t start again until I finished reading! When I closed this book I had a huge smile on my face and I felt like I had just listened to a really good song. (It’s not a huge book - about 200 pages)It’s a really perfect gift for any woman who is just starting out in life, whether for a grad, a newlywed or a new mom - this is an amazing gift! (and so pretty - there are these little beauties of illustrations throughout the book, and the whole thing is just such a pleasure to look at and read!)One caveat - this is not a cookbook! I thought it was a cookbook when I bought it, but the actual challah cookbook is not yet published, Pinson writes about it in the book and apparently it is due to be published this summer - this is sort of the back story to her challah cookbook - and totally worth reading on its own. So enjoyable and uplifting!!I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It is really a treasure - and I am counting down the days until the cookbook arrives . . .I am sure it will be incredible as well.

By Happy Elf Mom The editors of Faithgirlz and Girls' Life teamed up to produce this glitzy, glamourous book of how-to hair care and styling for teens. It's basically a magazine in small book form without the sexy cleavage-y ads and perfume samples, with a target audience of perhaps ten and up.It does get into how to find the best haircut for your face shape, some basic "how to braid" and select the correct hairbands for your hair texture type, but most of the book is about how to style longer hair and pop accessories in. My daughter Rose has very short hair, and it's very, very thin. Even with longer hair, none of these styles would work without so much hairspray that I'd have to be concerned about stray sparks from candles 20 feet away.I certainly don't think it's worth the $14.99 list price unless your daughter looks like the girl from Brave and has no idea what to do with all that fluffy hair.Side note: I appreciate that the social life of the girls depicted in the book revolve around wholesome pursuits like sports, church-going and get-togethers at home, but not appreciated is the thought that girls must have "a glam elastic hairband, a hair tie and hairspray" on them at all times in case their hair gets mussed. "Crisis averted!" Um, no. It's not a "crisis" when your hair's a mess. Let's teach our girls to be beautiful people inside and out without prescribing that they cart about glam- anything.I got this book for free from BookLook bloggers but was not required to write a positive review.

It is filled with lots of cute hairstyles (and a variety of hair tips and tricks) - and something in it is sure to work for everyone.Best Hair Book Ever! is styled like a magazine and has eight sections:- Your Best Hair- The Cutest Cut- School Hair- Summer Hair- Sporty Hair- Weekend Hair- Party Hair- BraidsAlthough the claim as the "best ever" hair book may be a little stretch, it really is a great resource! The photographs in this book are fantastic (more magazine style than a "how-to" book style). Each hairstyle does have written out instructions, but the majority do not have step-by-step photos. I would have loved to have seen some diagrams or step-by-step pictures. (There are only step-by-step pictures on the blowout page and in the "Braids" section.)This is one of those books that disappeared into my daughter's room as soon as it came in the house. She has enjoyed looking at it and getting some tips and ideas, but she says that many of the styles are too difficult to get looking like the picture (especially without an additional pair of hands) and some styles need a specific hair type to be able to pull them off. She has found many of the hairstyles easier to do on other people than on herself. One thing we also found surprising was that of the four hairstyles shown on the front cover, only one seems to really be addressed inside the book. She really wanted to know how to reproduce the look on the upper right, but it is not in the book.All that said, Best Hair Book Ever! has been fun to look at and has inspired some new hairstyles for my 12 year old. About the Author Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, the greates mystic poet the world has produced, was born in Balkh in 1207 A.D. His father, Shaikh Bahauddin Balkhi was also an acknowledged scholar in the world of Islam. The great change in the life of Maulana Rumi came when met Shams-e-Tabrez, a great mystic of his time. Maulana Rumi then rose to great spiritual heights and celebrated saint like Bu Ali Shah Qalander and Shaikh Shahabuddin Suhrawardy receeeived spiritual guidance from him.

Maulana Rumi left behind two works on which his fame rests-his Diwan and his immortal Mathnawi. The Diwan mostly contains mystical lyrics which are replete with sincerity, sublimity and deep emotionalism. His immortal Mathnawi is undoubtedly the most popular book in the Persian language. It has be translated into several languages of the East and the West and has given him a distinguished place among the few immortal poets of the world. According to the Maulana himself the Mathnawi contains 'the roots of religion and the discoveries of the mystry of nature and divine knowledge'.

Maulana Rumi died in 1273 A.D. and laid to rest at Konya, Turkey.

By Gogol Forget all the 'new translations' 'new interpretations' blah blah blah they are nothing of the kind, they are all just re-writes of this classic. Save yourself the money and the time reading books by people making money off the backs of scholars who given years to produce this masterpiece and buy this.Nicholson based this translation on manuscripts in Konya at the Mevlevihane during the early part of the last century. It must have been particularly hard during those troubled years in Turkey. He studied the commentary of the great Mevlevi Sheikh Ankarawi and the 2 volume notes and commentary (sold separately) are actually translations of that Sheikhs works.Modern day Sheikhs have said openly that this is one of the best interpretations of Rumis works around today. Sefik Can one of the last great scholars of the Mathnawi who continued the commentary Tahir ul Mevlevi the Turkish commentary on the Mathnawi praised Nicholsons translation so that should give you some idea of the quality of this book.You may wish to also look for the Discourses of Rumi also by Nicholson and the works of his student A J Arberry. Of modern scholars only Schimmel has come close with her excellent work 'I am wind and you are fire' and Chitticks translation of chapters of the Mathnawi (Chittick is a scholar in Persian, Schimmel is multi lingual) Save yourself the time and money, avoid the thousands of other books on Rumi and buy this one.

It is sometimes referenced by native Farsi speakers because of it's accuracy. However, it is difficult to read. Know that the work required to read this translation will be well rewarded for anyone with a heart.

Excellent book, which shares the beauty and depth of the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help By Stuart Dunn There are a lot of things I love about Christianity. I love reading Scripture and commentaries that point out things I miss. I love the complexity of the Rosary and the simplicity of the Jesus Prayer. I love the knowledge of the Church Fathers and the simplicity of the childlike Saints! And I love the beauty of icons, but more than that I love the depth of icons. Brother Daniel Korn shares this love of iconography, and it is on full display in his book Embracing the Icon of Love.Embracing the Icon of Love begins with a two chapter introduction that explains what an icon is and how to read and pray with icons. In his words, "Icons are not static objects of sacred imagery that remind us of the holy. Rather, they're energy-filled realities that draw us into a relationship with what the image represents." He goes on to explain in simpler terms that when we pray before an icon of Mary, "we are also in the space of God that resides within Mary." Part II of this book walks us through praying with one of the most famous icons, the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. There are five elements of the Gospel story of Jesus:1. The Face of the Blessed Mother2. The Right Hand of Mary that points directly to the heart of Christ3. Jesus (or the Infant God) that Mary presents to us4. Angels flanking Mary and Jesus5. The Golden Background of the IconEach chapter goes into more detail. For example, the chapter on the Face of the Blessed Mother focuses on her eyes, ears, mouth, and the eight-pointed star which adorns her head. Each chapter also includes a Scripture reflection, reflection questions, and in the middle of the book is full color images zoomed in on the particular aspect of the icon being studied. Brother Daniel meticulously explains many facets of the icon one could easily overlook. For example, most of us focus on the faces of Christ and Mary, but did you notice that his sandal is falling off? If you did, do you know what it means? I did not, but I will share it with you. It represents Christ's humility in taking on His human nature. Every element; every color; every detail of an icon is deliberate, so you must take your time when praying with an icon, so take your time and don't rush!The book contains a concluding two parts - one with prayers and exercises before the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the other with a history on the icon and its restoration. In fact, this book was published to announce the 150th Anniversary of the icon being given into Redemptorist care by Pope Pius IX. His mission for the Redemptorists when placing this icon in their care was to make Our Lady of Perpetual Help known to all. They have certainly done that through the years, and this book is taking that mission a step further. So whether you have a love for iconography' like me; a devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Hope; or just are an inquiring heart, you will find beauty and truth in this book. I highly recommend it!

Ok but not interesting enough By Hannah Robison I did enjoy the study on the book of James but felt it to not be as in depth as I thought it would be. It was very predictable and made it hard to stick to because of that (for me personally). I knew every day the routine. It was read the whole chapter on Monday then the rest of the week break the chapter down. Every day see if those verses had instructions on faith. I would have liked to have been give more thought provoking questions about the scripture and more verses from the bible to read to go along with it. There were some days it just didn't seem like enough. I wasn't a fan of the format was all. Maybe it's my age?

I love that she is intentional with her format. Each week I walked away with new insight and understanding of the book of James. I actually used a lot of my reflections and notes to write two different talks given on a recent global mission trip. The lessons I shared from this study were well received by both audiences I addressed. I am grateful for her investment of time and heart to write and to teach through her Bible studies.

The lessons were structured helping me to start looking deeper as I read and reread the chapters and verses. For me, the structured outline of the study brought about remembrance. It helped me to not just read the Bible, but begin to live it and apply it to my life. In my opinion, Bible Studies are a springboard to help dig deeper in to the Word of God and this did just that!

I ordered this book for my 7.5 year old and while I haven't given it to him yet, I just finished reading it and really enjoyed it. Funny, engaging story, and I'm pretty sure my kid will relate to Jaden. My one "con" about the book is that making Jaden a kindergartner seems an odd choice. While some kindergartners will be able to read this book independently, I feel the target audience is 1st-3rd grade. Jaden is able to read and write at a precocious level for a kindergartner (he writes a 7-page petition!), which is all well and good, but I suspect it's slightly older children who will most be able to relate to him. My worry is that kids in the 1st-3rd grade range who might be drawn to this book for its humor, illustrations, and storyline, might be "turned off" upon learning that the protagonist is younger than them. I'm particularly thinking of kids who are reluctant readers in the first place.

Hilarious story with an empowering message By Hagit Oron JT is a very determinate kindergartner who LOVES screens, but his parents don't allow him any screen time. JT isn't discouraged, quite the opposite, he does everything he can to get himself some screen time, and apparently he can do a lot.This is a very funny story with an empowering message to the reader - if you want something, you have to pursue it and never give up. If it doesn't work try another way and another way and don't rest until you achieve your goal.The black & white illustrations are amazing, they add another layer to the story.

By Jim parker Today I was browsing on the Kindle Store for some new, unique Minecraft books when I thought, "Hey, I haven't looked at Crafty Nichole's in a while. I'll see if there are any new releases." At the top of the list was this book. I downloaded it immediately and began reading. I loved the story itself but even better was the news that Crafty Nichole Book 50 (Congratulations!) would be the next installment in the Angry Alex series. Thank you!

I take seriously God's Word that says I should prayer without ceasing. (1 Thes. 5:17) However, some days, I get down and I feel I could use some guidance in the area of prayer. Prayer Quotes by Kevin Shorter offers over 2500 prayer quotes to help you think about your prayer life from different angles.Kevin Shorter's e-book is currently free on Kindle.This electronic book has quotes from over 400 authors arranged topically. The quotes are encouraging and uplifting. However, in addition to the quotes, Kevin Shorter has including articles in the book entitled, Seven tips to a Better Prayer Life, 5 Ways to Find God, 10 Things to Pray for Your Husband and 10 Things to Pray for Your Wife, and several other helpful articles along this line. In the introduction of the book, he shares that he started a blog called the Prayer Coach to help remove the burden of prayer from so many Christians who feel that they don't do enough and want to see improvement in their prayer life.I found this book to be helpful in my prayer life. Some topics deal with why we should pray, the role of prayer, and the benefits of prayer. Shorter also includes quotes about the roles of the Persons of the Trinity in prayer.The quotes come from a variety of people. Some are contemporary Christian authors, like Max Lucado and Bill Johnson. Some are people noted in history, such as Blaise Pascal and Martin Luther. There are many people quoted that I have never heard of.Shorter has included several articles at the end of the collection of quotes. The articles are very helpful to anyone wanting encouragement in their prayer life. He has tips to a better prayer life, ways to find God, and ways to effectively pray for others. He has also included great prayer lists, with suggestions in praying for your husband, wife, kids, marriage, and pastor.This is not the kind of book one would read cover to cover. One could look at the subject headings at the beginning of the book and find quotes in the area of interest. I did not find the quotes as inspiring as the articles by the author.I received a complimentary ebook from the author for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

From the Inside Flap The Power of a Story: Stories are an ancient way to transmit wisdom. They have the fantastic power to invoke a primal past, to impart a mythic dimension to our contemporary lives, to speak in the symbolic language of dreams, and to spark our prophetic imagination in creative ways that logic, law, and theory are simply incapable of achieving. Stories re-enchant our world. Sometimes a story is the easiest way to impart a profound idea in the simplest form. This is because a story has a special method of entering into our consciousness in order to impart essential information in a non-intrusive manner. When one person tells another what to do, the natural defenses of the ego instinctively arise in resistance to the information that is being imparted. But a story has a more gentle and roundabout way of entering into our psyche without being noticed. At first the underlying message of the story is planted like a seed in the soil of our subliminal subconscious; but slowly the teaching of the tale begins to blossom and bloom within the clear light of our conscious mind. In due time, the story can help us wake up to what is true and real in our lives. From within our near comatose state of spiritual slumber we can be so resistant to being woken up that only a story can sneak past our defense mechanisms in order to really wake us up. The purpose of these stories is to wake us up. Some of them will surprise us, some will jolt us, some will seem oddly familiar, and others completely archaic and obscure. Yet, with the help of the accompanying commentary, the hope and prayer is that each story will impart a novel life lesson and serve to wake us up in some sense; pushing us all to go a little bit deeper, to move a little bit further along the path of our soul's journey.
