1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Can't go wrong with a character named Earl! By Earl Mutts is a particularly fun comic strip and I'm not just saying that because my name is Earl! This collection, The Mutts Winter Diaries, collects a number of winter themed strips. If there is a drawback to this concept it is that many revolve around just a couple of themes (hibernation and snowflakes). What I find works with small children is a collection of these types of books and instead of going through a book in one or two sittings go through roughly a week's worth at a sitting from several different strips.The rating I am giving is because anyone who likes the strip will enjoy it and both young and old can relate to what they deal with. It is light, fun and wintry! Just allow yourself to enjoy a nice pleasant laugh as a break.Reviewed from an ARC made available by the publisher via NetGalley.

This book pulls together the winter related strips to create a great book for the existing fan, but also for anyone that loves a great, witty comic that presents topics that all can relate to. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Fun Read By Grateful Grandma This is a collection of winter-themed comic strips featuring Earl, Mooch and their various friends (human and animal). I agreed with so many of Mooch's comments about winter and snow! The Winter Diaries are pretty much what the gang gets up to or doesn’t get up to, in winter. They try hibernating. They meet a penguin, who may, just may, be a stand in for people in general, and they hang with bears. We see what the squirrels get up to and watch Mooch try to find two identical snowflakes. Some comics are funnier than others, but they're all such fun to read. Earl, Mooch and their friends truly capture the best best and worst in our feelings about winter. So much to identify with and laugh about.The artwork is as adorable as ever, and Mooch, Earl, and the gang are their usual goofy selves. I also loved how some of them were in color (no doubt originally printed in the Sunday paper).I especially loved the Human Society plug and tips in the More to Explore section at the end that talks about different critters in the winter time and how they stay warm. There are even suggestions for things you can do, and a note to keep pets inside where it's warm when it gets snowy outside.I realize this book is intended for younger readers but it is certainly a pleasure for all ages. If you love Mutts and winter, this is the perfect collection of comic strips. Also if you are an animal lover, Mutts does a lot of work for finding homes for shelter animals and supports rescuing pets rather than buying them from breeders. It’s hard not to like this strip.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

By neat freak This was one of my favourite devotional Bible studies to date. It really took me into the Word in a fresh new way, giving insight into things one might breeze through when reading the book of Genesis. It contained light hearted humour and clever sub headings that made this study a joy to do. The questions were thought provoking but not difficult. It was a pleasant addition to my devotions that I looked forward to doing each day.

By THowerton Arguably "The Lord is my shepherd..." psalm is the most famous and well known of the psalms and has spoke to countless generations from the time of King David until now. Even still in a contemporary westernized anti-Christian culture such as ours this gentle book can reach to our hearts, to our souls, and deliver us to still waters and green pastures for nourishment and understanding. In a culture that knows little of about agriculture and animal husbandry one would think that this psalm would get lost and lose its resonance. But the power of David's inspired words still reach us. Phillip Keller, himself and minister and shepherdsman at one time in Africa, brings his unique perspectives on not only the allegorical qualities of the prophet's words likening us to sheep ("...all we like sheep have gone astray....") but also on what it is like to be a GOOD shepherd. Throughout the psalm narrative the focus is on how the good shepherd (God) takes care of his own sheep (us) and Keller starkly contrasts this with his experience as a good shepherd and tender of his sheep against neighbor shepherds who did not care properly for their sheep. This adds depth, and warmth, to the shepherd song of David and we can embrace our God with more awe and appreciation because of it. Keller of course discusses the natural tendency of sheep (and rarely is it flattering, except for when they rest contented and healthy within and under the provisional care of the good shepherd) which is enlightening, sometimes amusing, and gently drawn across how we our like sheep beneath the auspices of God's care.The chapters are broken up by the cadence of the psalm (ex., chapter 1 is titled "The Lord is my shepherd" and chapter 2 "I shall not want") so that the entire psalm is represented by chapter headlines and corresponding themes. It's amazing how much he draws out of what we think of as so small and brief.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. "... no matter what happens, you'll always have your story..." By Pop Bop This is the book you get, more or less, when Dr. Seuss meets H.P. Lovecraft on the way over to Roald Dahl's house.Our hero, Jonathan, is an all-around sadsack who finds himself lost in an evil swamp. He joins three other travellers and they all end up at an Inn at which the price for a room is the telling of a stirring story. After the others tell their tales it is Jonathan's turn. Having lived a life of incomparable dullness Jonathan has not a single tale and so is sent off back into the swamp. He then has a ripping adventure of great and suspenseful moment.There's a lot going on in this book and it delivers a great deal more than the simple premise might suggest. Regarding plot, I suspected that Jonathan would eventually pipe up with an unexpected but predictable story, (this is all happening, after all, at the "Canterbury Inn"), and that that would be that. I was wrong. This book just keeps going and going. We start with sadsack Jonathan, wander the swamp, meet the fellow travellers and hear three complete short tales; then the book really gets going. Jonathan has four classic adventures in the swamp, some requiring quick wits, some requiring luck, some requiring guile, and the last requiring considerable, for want of a better word, backbone.There are evil characters and creatures galore. Each has his, or its, hideous features, (Lovecraft), although many have a skewed sense of humor, (Dahl), and all are drawn outrageously, (Seuss, but with lots more teeth). There is good humor here and some wry cleverness, but I would expect that some of these creatures could actually scare a little reader. (In a toothier version of the Wizard of Oz flying monkees kind of way.)Regarding the drawing, this is a graphic novel. While there is a great deal of prose narrative, it is printed over, under, around and through full page illustrations on almost every page. (Indeed, one traveller's tale is told only through illustrations). There is no panel layout as such; the approach is more flowing and free form. Some of the action scenes are a bit sketchy and some scenes are a bit dark or too busy, but for the most part it is clear from the drawings what is going on. Jonathan, especially, is effectively expressive and the overall presentation goes way beyond mere comic book conventions.The upshot is that you get a creepy thriller book, a creature-horror book, and an adventure quest book, all wrapped up in a Weird Tales vibe and shot through with a positive message about taking charge of your life and making yourself the hero of your own story. Fun story - in a weird and wonderful way By Gerald Davidson I first became aware of Mr. Merritt’s work when I stumble upon Kory Merritt’s Lost Side Of Suburbia comic. I was impressed with his style of writing, drawing style and wicked wit. Which was spread though out his work, his stories were compelling, filled with weird images and hidden puns. I waited some times for months for the next installment. But I just could not help going back and checking for the next instalment.So when I found out he had published his book, “The dreadful fate of Jonathan York” I did not hesitate to order it. A collection of interlinking stories in the Canterbury Tales style, but much more funny, As a young man loses his way in the woods, stumbles upon a small group of travelers, who fear the coming night, make their way to small inn for safety. But safety comes with a price, a reveling personal story.Written with humor, and illustrated in his unique style of hidden puns with in the story line. He has a unique talent for telling a child’s tale written with adults in mind. I am looking forward to his next release.

Crandall In this life most of us find hidden reservoirs of strength, but rarely do we do so in the quirky way of Jonathan York! This book, with its blend of comedy and comic strip monsters to defeat is ideal for older children and for some younger ones. That is perhaps why it was chosen to be a nominee For the 2015 Kirkus Award.Okay, i have a confession. I am decades beyond childhood and love the book! Although it is written for young readers it is perfect for anyone of almost any age. Ages 9 to 14 are probably ideal for this book.So, our great-niece who is nine and her brave slightly younger brother are enjoying their copy at the same time i am enjoying mine.Look beyond the marvelous story and intriquing characters to the cartooning. Yes, i did not have to even suggest that. Kory Merritt's cartoons are absolute eye candy. Some are drawn from a fine imagination, while others are real beasties your child may find in a book of marine denizens. Glimpse a bit more and you will find hidden references to other works of art.Your school library and public library need this book. Closer to home: your kids need this book, and do not forget to read it yourself when their young eyes have drooped into sleep.This story is a keeper which deserves to be turned into a television Halloween special! Let yourself and the kids enjoy it any time of the year, though. The points it gets across with its strange comedy are life lessons.

Denise tells the story of how she did not let obstacles, bad choices she made and circumstances of life dictate her future. She takes you on a journey from the early part of her life before she really knew Christ, to the present where she now has total trust in Him. Denise’s story is so encouraging to that person who feels like they are in a boxed in situation with no sign of a resolution. She shares intimate moments from her life that most would throw in the towel behind. Furthermore, I don’t know many, who would be so transparent to share their life story in this way. To me this shows that she has completely surrendered to Christ and answers to Him alone. Thank you for being so bold and fearless. You have truly blessed my soul. He is well pleased!

And they think that they need to go to man,but what they need to do is call on Jesus!! and this is exactly what she did and gave her life over to Him. surrendered it all and God is blessing her. Opening doors that she never thought that would be open because only God can open these doors!! This is for the young that have made many mistakes and don't think they are worthy of God's love.But this is a prime example that if you trust God that he will continue to bless you and open many doors for you! Denise bares her soul in sharing how the repeatedly bad choices she made only led to heartache and failure. However, once she TRULY accepted the love of God and began to really develop a relationship with Him, the Lord began to show off in her life. If you are experiencing one heartache after another and can't figure out why, I encourage you to read this story and allow the Lord to speak to your heart through Denise's challenges. God's glory truly is amazing and He is not a respecter of persons.

When his friends at the preschool playground invite him to play, he shouts, "NO!" and tells them to go away. So they do. Pom Pom suddenly has a change of heart and apologizes to everyone. All is forgiven and they begin to play. This slight story has a predictable plot and no character development. The retro artwork has some nice touches of color, but the pictures are static and every page is dominated by Pom Pom's scowling face. The illustrations follow the simple text but do not add to the story. British spelling and terminology ("flannel" instead of "towel," "chase" instead of "tag") may confuse American readers. Jeremy Tankard's Grumpy Bird (Scholastic, 2007) tells a similar story but offers a more convincing cure for the grumps. Pom-Pom panda's pessimistic plight By BrittyMama Cute story about a little panda named Pom Pom who gets up on the wrong side of the bed and goes through the day grumpy- EVERYTHING is wrong. After lashing out at anyone and everyone, he finally comes to realize perhaps he has overreacted. Thankfully, he feels sorry for how he reacted and is able to gain the forgiveness of his friends. The story itself is reminiscent of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (minus the threats to move to Australia)- though it is original enough to warrant a read.Any parent will relate to the mother of the pessimistic panda and understand that sometimes you just have one of THOSE days. The illustrations are simple but very bold and colorful and in a unique, fun style.

If you're leery of shelling out this much on a set you're not sure you'll love, read a sample. You'll be totally hooked. Book one ends in a gigantic cliffhanger, so you're going to be buying the second book anyway. Might as well get them all at once! This series is a multi-genre fantasy/YA Romance/paranormal/thriller/mystery with a little bit of steampunk thrown in for good measure. I had a really hard time putting it down, and binge-read all three in two days! Loved it!

I read (and believe I reviewed) the first book, which was so good I HAD to buy the set. I can't begin to tell you how much I loved these books, and how sorry I was to come to the end of them! I hope others enjoy them just as much as I have.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. white hart series complete box set By Little Hawk (Darla) this is such an awesome series i actually bought the complete set however i wan t review each book as well book two flows so well that the story continues without a break not many authors do this and i think it is a wonderful gift...in book one we see mae a craft born she is afraid to reveal her magic as she does not want to be forced in a marriage to the prince in book two we see she has fallen in love with the prince mae is afraid that the prince would never love her as he is to marry ellen the pretend craft born when the castle is under a spell mae discover she is the only one conscious so she has to destroy the nix she sees the others fears and learns sasha can be with her through this when mae destroys the nix a bad thing happens (sorry cant give away the spoiler) she saves the people in the castle all hell breaks loose at the cas and ellen wedding the king was going to kill mae stag in front of cas with mae watching she lets go of her powers the king realizes that she is the craft born not ellen poor ellen paid the price for this mae has to run away from the king cas finds his mother who has been poisoned lyndon and the king are crazy cas leaves with ellen to look for mae they find each other at sasha village cas lets mae know he loves her they are on the run they have to destroy the king before he destroys them they get married they fight and kill lyndon first they find the black diamond (cant say much more on this cant give story away but will say it is sad did not expect this) the king and sultan wants the black diamond for immorality mae gets a big surprise when she finds out shes with child

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Both of my kids LOVED this!! By Jaimie Peyton I have bought two of these books. One for my 8 year old and one for my 9 year old. They both love them! I actually bought one and then my other child saw it and wanted it so I had to go back and order another one! It has math problems, spot the differences, word searches, etc. It really makes them think and it is all about Minecraft which they love! If your child is into Minecraft this is a fun way to get them thinking and using their brain. I highly recommend!

A balanced, well written study of the basic tenets of the Christian faith - certainly helpful to anyone wanting to become a mature, informed follower of Christ.The leader's guide will make this a perfect small group study tool.
