Even though the Amish don't arrange marriages, that didn't stop Miriam Shantz's parents from arranging for her to marry Amish man, Adam Stutzman. With only vague memories of Adam, Miriam goes along with her parents' plans of the marriage until she sees the tall young Amish man, Stephen Williams. Stephen and Miriam forge a friendship when he takes the family by covered wagon on the journey from the port of Pennsylvania to the Stutzmans' farm in Earltown. Adam's family had moved to America many years before, and it was they who had encouraged the Shantz family to follow. When Miriam is reacquainted with Adam, she finds he is not the same person she remembered, and this sparks rebellion within the normally quiet Amish girl. With encouragement from Stephen, she finds the courage to tell her parents that she cannot go through with the arranged marriage to Adam. Once Miriam is released from her obligations, will she find that Stephen is everything she hoped? Will Miriam regret calling off the marriage to Adam when she learns that one cannot always rely upon first impressions? I will admit that I love kids' Christmas books; however, there are only so many ways to tell a story about Christmas before they all sort of start to sound alike. That was why I was interested in reading Christmas in America by Callista Gingrich. A new take on the Christmas season and what it has meant in the history of our wonderful country? Sign me up!I wasn't sure what my kids would think of Christmas in America by Callista Gingrich. When I received it in the mail, I read through it and there was ALOT of time periods in American History covered-- starting with the first settlers heading to the New World, to the Patriots during the Revolutionary War, to the time of the Pioneers, to the first national Christmas tree, to the mission of Apollo 8. I didn't know if the kids would like the story or not or if they would even be able to understand the passage of time in the book. Well, I worried for naught...my kids LOVED the book. Rebecca (age 9) was very interested in the different historical events that Ellis the Elephant was able to travel back to and share with the readers. Jacob said his favorite part was the rhyming words. Benjamin loved trying to find the eagle on each page. I liked that the kids got a mini history lesson while enjoying a fun story about Christmas. I also liked the illustrations in the story. Ellis the Elephant is so cute and perfect for kids to relate to. This is a book that will be perfect to read every year as the kids get older and they learn more and more about the history of the USA and will gain more appreciation for the history of Christmas in the USA.Overall, I would highly recommend this to be added to your Christmas library. Perfect change of pace for kids!DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of the book through the Hachette Book Group and Gingrich Productions in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My little ones loved following Ellis on his journey in Christmas in America. They learned so much about the celebration of Christmas during different parts of our nation's history.Mrs. Gingrich is dedicated to teaching young children about the importance of learning American history. Christmas in America is a great addition to the series and we look forward to following Ellis' adventures in the future.

Newell This is a book I would buy for my own kids - first to read to them and later for them to read to themselves. The book is a very apt introduction for small children to the richness of America's heritage and to our Christmas tradition. For those children who are too small to read or to understand all the words, the book has fantastic art work. This should be under the tree for millions of young children this Christmas.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science books are the best! By Janet Hamilton Summary: Machines make work easier. The six simple machines—lever, wheel and axle, pulley, screw, ramp, and wedge are all around us, helping us in our everyday life. This book looks at each simple machine in turn, describing how it works and showing common examples. Compound machines are briefly explained, too. End matter includes a lever activity called “Seesaw Cents”, a glossary, and a couple of websites to check out for more simple machine information. Grades 1-5.Pros: Started in 1960, the Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science series is one of the best for explaining scientific concepts to young children. There are two levels (Simple Machines is level 2); level 1 could be used with preschoolers, and level 2 is appropriate for all elementary grades. They provide basic but thorough explanations told in a down-to-earth tone with plenty of real-world examples and fantastic illustrations. I challenge anyone to find a basic scientific concept that hasn’t been written about in a Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science book.Cons: You might not get all your questions about how simple machines work answered in this book. It’s a good starting point, not a comprehensive treatise.

Mail Order Bride: Overweight Abused Daughter With Three Siblings For Cowboy Rescuer is a 15,000-word western romance novelette that takes place in the mid-1800s. Being a daughter to abusive and neglectful parents, Mary took on the responsibility of caring for her three younger siblings at an early age. Her parents are criminals, and pass the time at their house by constantly harassing the children, and mocking Mary about being overweight. Looking for a way out for all of them, Mary answers an advertisement in the newspaper from a cowboy seeking a Godly wife. An additional problem is: she intentionally did not inform the cowboy about being heavy. As the four siblings flee to California, Mary prays for the cowboy to see her true beauty from within, and provide safety for the children. Unbeknownst to them, their vindictive parents learn about their plan and are on their way to ruin it.

Continually using first names when talking to some one gets old fast. When only the two people talking are present reader should be able to follow conversation without having to read their names every time. Agree with other reviewer as to the too quick resolution. Also there is no way parents could have arrived at same time unless they were on the train, which in 5 days it would have been hard not to notice them.

Read about the trust these women had in God's provision for their happiness By Amazon Customer I enjoy reading a clean fun story that I can escape in for a little while. Mail order brides have intrigued me because of the unknown about what these young woman were walking into and the faith that they had in God to provide a love worth the risk. This was a good book and I enjoyed reading it. The story line left me wanting to read more by this author.

Resolution could have been longer By Maryann Anderson I understood that this was to be a short book but it seemed like when the resolution started coming it just flew by and everything was resolved too quickly. It was still a good story and I enjoyed it...just wish it had been a bit longer.

Praise of THE UNFORGETTABLE HANDS OF THE CAUSE received personally by the author when the book was published originally as a print book by the Baha'i Publishing Trust of India: Red Grammer,Baha'i singer, songwriter, entertainer and father of "Honey, I'm Good" Andy Grammer wrote in the Goodreads website“This is one of my favorite books! It captures in sweet vignettes the profound love of these angels who were among us. Savor it one lovely paragraph at a time.” "…simply love it! Started reading it immediately, and had a hard time putting it down. Your style is comfortable and very readable. I hope all readers will enjoy it as much as I do.” Evelyn Mussachia, former secretary to a member of the Universal House of Justice: “ "I finished the book this morning and thought it was excellent. I was moved to tears…" Leann McGerty, Pacific Region Senior Archeologist “I got the book last night and jumped right in. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! I have wept so much…I'm really enjoying. It's dignified, sensitive, insightful, intelligent and evokes memories that will never be effaced from my heart." Dr Duane Troxel, Chief Executive Officer at Communications Corporation “I really love your book. Thank you for sharing all your precious moments with the Hands of the Cause. Truly inspiring!!" Nikan MowlavI, Baha'i pioneer “…spiritually energizing.” Patrick Roberts, Hawaii-based Bagpiper “Your wondrous book keeps me going day after day. I could not put it down and read and re-read it! We have all been yearning for spirit during this plan. Your book provided it.…“ Kathy Gilbert, New Zealand maidservant "Just the other day I saw your book on the Hands and can hardly put it down. By shirley t. mendoza This overview of an era in the evolution of the Baha'i Faith, is full of personal experiences and uplifting, memorable moments....that somehow DO make one feel the powerful, spiritual influence, wisdom, humor, and presence of the Hands of the Cause! I consider these words to be a "gift" for someone who was not able to meet the Hands of the Cause during their lifetimes!

Captured the sweet humilIty and deeply spiritual power of the informal friendship some of the friends encountered with the Hands in their travels. Including some quotes from their talks would have would have added to my engagement in this lovely book.

When Adrian Feldmann, an Australian doctor, discovered Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal in the 1970s, he began a journey that culminated in him becoming a Buddhist monk (Thubten Gyatso) - the one thing he was sure he didn't want to be at the outset. In these short, profound articles, Venerable Gyatso explains the principal teachings of the Buddha and reflects on the search for a truthful way of life, the pursuit of happiness, birth, death, love, friendship, sex, marriage, and raising children. Written from the ancient Buddhist country of Mongolia where Venerable Gyatso was teaching, these pithy reflections explore how we can turn the pursuit of happiness into a lived philosophy. Peppered throughout are entertaining and astounding true stories from Venerable Gyatso's life - whether from the Mongolian steppes or in the Australian suburbs - stories of ghosts in the Nepalese mountains, the mysterious appearance of western-style breakfasts in a remote monastery in the Himalayas, and how his first parachute jump was excellent preparation for realizing the sky-like nature of the "emptiness" of all things. This ebook was published by the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive, a non-profit organization established to make the Buddhist teachings of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche freely accessible in many ways, including on our website for instant reading, listening or downloading, and as printed, audio and ebooks.
