Oh sure, we’ve all heard the story about Jesus entering Jerusalem riding on a donkey. But have we heard it from the perspective of the donkey who experienced this history-making event firsthand? He might be just a pack animal, but he has a big lesson to learn.   Part of the Their Side of the Story series, The Donkey and Jesus offers an important lesson about service, and the Parent Connection feature helps parents and kids further discuss the message behind the original Bible story.   Kids ages 4 to 8 will love this interesting way to learn about Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem. And don’t miss the other rollicking Bible stories in this series: The Raven and Noah’s Ark, The Frog and the Plagues, The Lion and Daniel, and The Whale and Jonah.

That independence can be a good thing sometimes, but sometimes independence turns into selfishness. In The Donkey and Jesus, young readers will learn about living a life of service and even doing the littlest things excellently for God.Have You Heard Their Side of the Story? is a lighthearted series featuring biblical accounts as seen through the eyes of an animal participant. In the case of The Donkey and Jesus, that animal participant is the young never-before-ridden donkey that Jesus requests for his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. The story introduces a stubborn donkey who doesn’t want to serve anyone but himself. When he’s asked to carry Jesus, he tries to be rebellious, but God soon sets him straight and says that he created Donkey to serve. It’s a wonderful story of the importance of the small things as Donkey learns that his simple act of service was actually prophesied in Scripture and is actually a big deal. This is a lesson us big kids could learn too. We tend to think that if our church isn’t the biggest or we’re not the greatest or our business isn’t the best, then we aren’t really accomplishing anything. But this book reminds us that excellence in the ordinary is what God has created us for and that simple acts of service go a long way.As with the previous books, the illustrations are wonderful and the book’s vocabulary is around a 2nd grade reading level, making this a read-by-yourself book for older kids and a read-to-me book by younger kids. The Parent Connection at the end of the book continues to be great and could even be adapted into a Sunday School curriculum for young children. The Bible verse for this book is Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men.” That’s such a needed message to young kids and I’m glad to see a book that creatively addresses that theme.

It had a little of everything ; love, passion, murder, kidnapping, weddings, drama, mystery. The story pulls you in so you feel like you are really there with the mer. A few times when I was reading it, I actually dreamed it. Mrs. Swift has a vivid imagination and knows how to tell a great story. I am definitely a fan, but , unfortunately, also a critic. I loved all this series and found it fascinating. However, the use of English was abominable, the worst of the worst.

A book that lives up to its title By Amazon Customer Raymond Wheeler opened my eyes to not only see my current paradigm, but also to lead me to make the changes I wanted to embrace the paradigm of servant leadership. This book gives an in depth understanding of leadership and culture providing great resources, while at the same time remaining practical and offering simple steps to keep you moving forward.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Change The Paradigm is a heartwarming, elegant and life changing read. Bravo Raymond L Wheeler, 5 stars absolutely! By Melanie L. Hutter Change The Paradigm was a refreshing, powerful, and pleasantly surprising read. I haven't read an abundance of religious books; however, I was wrong to think this was all this book was, it took me places I never expected. I was charmingly surprised by the content on how leading with compassion and hope instead of the typical belittling and empty business leaders that tend to put people down causing them to lose hope and feeling disillusioned which reduces their productivity. This book came to me at the perfect time; although I may not be in the position to tell my leaders to change their ways, I can certainly lead by example and hope they catch on. I work very hard to try to live my life actually very similar to how the author spoke about the need for leaders with words of support, hope, and inspiration which I owe to be raised by such loving parents. I am going to start putting in motion the way I live my life in my work place as well, for there is no need for anyone to live their life miserably. This book was well written, brilliantly detailed and very elegant and charming. I believe all those currently in leadership roles and those who plan to be future leaders should read this book, it will transform how you interact with others in all aspects of your life. I highly recommend this book for everyone looking to put more hope, healing and compassion in your life and/or trying to help others with that same pursuit.

Inspiring and stimulating read By TFLReader There are an influx of preachy religious books these days, but despite the subtitle being “How to Lead Like Jesus” this is not one of those, but a book that helps manage efficiency and motivate in an uplifting and practical way on a day to day basis. Even a few chapters in I could already feel myself stimulated and eager to try out these new thought processes and tools to lead in my own life. Definitely a book I will go back and reread more and also dip in and out of on a regular basis. A great purchase and an enjoyable read. (This is an unbiased book review and the opinions given here are 100% my own.)

Read Online and Download Ebook The Essential St. John of the Cross: Ascent of Mount Carmel Dark Night of the Soul A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom Christ Twenty Poems by St. John of the Cross, by Saint John of the Cross

Collected here in this omnibus edition are all three of St. John of the Cross' major works as well as twenty of his magnificent poems. The Ascent of Mount Carmel is the third major work of St. John of the Cross and is considered to be the introductory work on mystical theology. Dark Night of the Soul is one of the greatest religious poems ever written. This masterpiece of Mystic Christianity examines faith and how to keep faith when all seems lost. Think of it as guide to making it through the dark night of the soul to the brighter, happier, faith filled tomorrow that awaits. In A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom Christ, St. John states: "I do not purpose here to set forth all that greatness and fullness the spirit of love, which is fruitful, embodies in it. Yes, rather it would be foolishness to think that the language of love and the mystical intelligence - and that is what these stanzas are - can be at all explained in words of any kind, for the Spirit of our Lord who helps our weakness."

I try to spend some time on Spiritual reading as well as secular and John of the Cross is a master. If you're not familiar with his writing, he can be somewhat obscure and "heavy" as is true of a lot of mystics, but stick with it, it's a treasure trove.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful series! By Joshua Olds Two stories in one book! The Little Bible Heroes flip-over book series is an easy to read and fun to look at retelling of biblical stories in a way that even the youngest of children can understand.Daniel was a very young man—likely in his early teens—when he was captured by the Babylonians and brought to Babylon. His story, as told here, especially rings true for young readers learning what to do if people around them are not doing the right thing. This story focuses on Daniel’s refusal to eat the king’s food and his ability to interpret the king’s dream. The very last page briefly summarizes his time in the lion’s den many, many years later and probably would have been better off omitted from this book and in a book all its own.But with that said, I really appreciate that this series has gone out of its way to tell stories of Little Bible Heroes. Many of the stories in the series talk about young kids who had faith and did great things. That’s a powerful thought to the young reader who just thinks he’s too young to do anything. The story of Miriam is similar. Miriam is a young girl who, through her bravery and courage, is able to keep her family together for a few more years and give Moses the Jewish upbringing necessary to lead his people out of Egypt.Little Bible Heroes is a simple, but clear and fun series intended to be read to even the littlest listeners. The visuals are fun and the colors vibrant and the story invites parents to step in and ask questions and teach the storyline and its moral even more deeply.

According to a recent Gallup report, only 13% of people are "actively engaged" in their jobs, 63 percent merely put in their time, and the remaining 24% are actively disengaged. People are bored at work, at home, in personal habits, and in their spiritual lives. Over time a pattern of loss in vitality and a shift towards fear, comfort, and consumption is leaving them feeling unfulfilled and less creative.Think Like a 5 Year Old explores a documented phenomenon in which people almost universally exhibit genius-level creativity as young children but lose it as they become adults--and what we can do to reverse this trend. With this book, learn the story of your creativity: why you had it in the beginning, how you lost it, and how to get it back, to create great things.Wilson proposes that every person is called to a life of creativity. This means knowing how you are made, reclaiming your passions, learning the craft of creativity as an act of faith, and surrendering the creative process to God."Having been made in the Creator God's image, we are born creative, yet we tend to agree in theory but disagree in practice," notes Wilson. "Respected creative thinkers such as Sir Ken Robinson, Paul Torrance, and Seth Godin offer insights, but the problem is that while everyone has this supernatural power within them, they've lost sight of it. They've given in to forces that steal and destroy our innate joy. We don't feel creative--and consequently, we don't feel fulfilled."Wilson redefines the word "creativity" using a framework of categories such as compassion, problem solving, engineering, and artistic expression. Creativity is about being attentive to and acting in response to the combination of ideas and reactions and preferences that form one's view of the world. This perspective, this unique form of expression, is the identity given to them by God and the origin of their creativity.

From the Inside Flap "Creativity is critical to most endeavors, yet at times in everyone's life, and in every organization, the wellspring runs dry.  Len Wilson's book is gift that will inspire and foster creativity.  Filled with terrific examples, this book will benefit leaders and teams in any line of work." - Adam Hamilton, Author, Senior Pastor, The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Leawood, KS"I've always believed that everyone is born creative. But there's something about entering the educational system that starts pushing our sense of wonder into the background.  Now, Len Wilson shows us how to rediscover our imagination in his amazing new book Think Like A 5 Year Old. Get this book, because after reading it, you'll never look at life's challenges the same way again."--Phil Cooke, filmmaker, media consultant, and author of One Big Thing:  Discovering What You Were Born to Do"I can't recommend this book strongly enough. Len Wilson's work is not only significant and inspiring, but critical for our society in this time. His insights are perhaps especially important for church leaders as we attempt to discover how to make the Gospel message authentic in our ever-changing and isolating landscape. Spirituality and creativity cannot be separated. We all need to be called again to become childlike in our faith, our imagination and our sense of wonder and possibility that we may recapture the creativity the Creator placed in all of us. This book is for the closet-creative and child in each of us that is just waiting to break free."--Gary Rivas, Pastor, Gracepoint Church, Johannesburg, South Africa"Len writes as a man who is both deeply creative and intensely pastoral. In Think Like a Five Year Old, he dives deeply into the heart of any person who believes that creativity matters. In his thought-provoking and beautiful words, Len is helping us all discover the beauty of being a follower of Jesus and living a creative life that's from the gut. There are people in my life who cannot see the creativity God is calling them to, and they'll be the first people to whom I send this book."-- Gary Molander, Co-owner, Floodgate Productions and author, Pursuing Christ. Creating Art."Len Wilson's excellent book isn't just for those who would call themselves 'creative.' It is packed with practical insights to help me grow as a communicator and storyteller. Using these principles, Len has brought creative wonder back into local churches to tell better stories and change more lives."-- Bryan Dunagan, Senior Pastor, Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Dallas, TX"A plethora of blog posts offer 10 ways to get more creative or 6 ways to find inspiration. Don't look for such facile answers here. Instead, discover a set of rich illustrations and powerful stories that reveals what it really means to drink from the fountain of fulfillment."--Joe Carmichael, pastor, United Methodist Church"Len Wilson's Think Like a Five Year Old takes us back to the playground to cultivate renewed habits that lead to new futures. Thoughtful and thought-full, Len dares us to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off, like a diligent Little Leaguer first learning to swing for the fences. Regardless where you now believe you are on the creativity spectrum, this book will take you further!"--Dr. Jay Richard Akkerman, Director of Graduate Theological Online Education, Northwest Nazarene University, author of Missional Discipleship: Partners in God's Redemptive Mission"A great watercolorist once said creativity was the convergence of five blessings: contrast, composition, intuition, humility, and effortlessness. Len has painted a book to model these blessings. Once you have read it, then stand at a distance to look at it. Then you will get it."--Thomas G. Bandy, conference speaker, leadership coach, president of Thriving Church Consulting, LLC

By Marilyn Dalrymple Not exactly what I was expecting, but interesting and informative, regardless. I was looking forward to a guide more about opening my mind and seeing all the possibilities for new and wonderful things around me. And - in a sense - that is what the book offers. I was looking for magic, the book offers real life situations and ways in which to view those situations. The philosophy of this book is quoted on page 44: "Dumbo didn't need the feather; the magic was in him." (Stephen King)This is what Author Len Wilson promotes. He gives examples of problems for which real people had to find real answers and tells how these people found their magic within. It's a good message. The ending chapters of the book, "Ten Ways to Find Good Ideas," and "How to Capture Good Ideas," are more like what I wanted from the entire book. This was my expectation, though, without truly understanding what to anticipate.Think like a 5-Year-Old: Reclaim Your Wonder & Create Great Things, is interesting and entertaining and a good motivator to help one solve problems. Certainly worth a read.

But I didn't...I think that Len Wilson is reaching a little when he grafts spiritual principles of creativity onto Bible stories, especially, for instance, when he uses Jesus' temptation in the wilderness as an example, and then later Abraham's leaving home. On one hand, this book is trying to tell some Bible (and other) stories and relate them to creativity in a spiritual fashion. But these connections feel forced. And on the other hand the book is trying to convince us to learn how to be creative like we were when we were kids. I just didn't feel transported, there are other ways to spend your time to recapture that better I suppose.Ultimately, I think this book suffers from a tragic flaw for many of us. Those who are employing their creativity regularly are likely to be intrigued by the title, the cover, and the concept. They don't necessarily need to read this book, though, and I think there are other great books on creativity (albeit not from a Christian perspective) that they might be better served by. And those who aren't creative won't really want to seek this book out. So I'm trying to figure out who among those who might actually read it will be well served by it. Not many I'm afraid.I'm being a little generous in giving it 3 stars. I think if you're not creative and want to reclaim whatever childlike wonder and creativity you once had and want again, it might be a decent read, so I'd give it 4 stars perhaps, even if it isn't necessarily life-changing on its own. If you ARE creative, there are better uses for your reading time so 1 or 2 stars... so I'm splitting the difference in giving it 3.

With the basic premise of this book being that beginning in the fourth grade, people go into a creative slump. This is corroborated by NASA administered "creative genius" tests that show that 98% of five year-olds are creative geniuses, but the same kids by the time they are thirteen, only test at a 2% creative genius rate. Apparently, our society and culture really emphasizes convergent thinking (i.e. the status quo) while creative geniuses manifest divergent thinking (more along the lines of "What if . . .?") And this convergent thinking lifestyle contributes to a general malaise and dissatisfaction in the working world and in life in general. The author writes from a very interesting Christian perspective and he emphasizes that since as human beings we are created in God's image, we have the need to create within us. And when we create, we become closer to God. (Provided that we don't fall into the trap of over-inflating our own egos in the process.) The author even does a fascinating study showing how Jesus faced temptations along His path to creativity (after all, Jesus did create a whole new way of thinking and being that transformed the world). And in sum, this book really provides encouragement and insight for all of us to get in touch with our inner creative selves. I really delighted in the first section of this book, especially so.

This book, the last that noted moral theologian Servais Pinckaers, OP, wrote before his death, was conceived as a follow-up to his previous work Plaidoyer pour la vertu (An Appeal for Virtue) (2007) Pinckaers' aim in Passions and Virtue was to show the positive and essential role that our emotions play in the life of virtue. His purpose is part of a larger project of renewing moral theology, a theology too often experienced as an ethics of obligation rather than as a practical guide to living virtuously. To this end, Pinckaers sketches a positive psychology of the passions as found in the biblical tradition, in the writings of the Fathers of the Church, in pagan authors and, especially, in the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas. In addition to treating the virtues as they relate to the concupiscible and irascible appetites, the will, and the intellect, Pinckaers expands the discussion to include such unexpected topics as humor, silence, the positive role of anger in the life of virtue, work, rest and leisure, sports, the psychology of the virtues and, finally, the positive limits to a life of virtue in the useless servant. Pinckaers' book is an important contribution to the relatively recent retrieval of virtue ethics. His positive and unique assessment of the role of the emotions in the moral life will no doubt find favor among his English-speaking readers.

The emotions should be guided by reason, not repressed, in the pursuit of virtue By MDLION An excellent book by the Dominican theologian Servais Pinckaers, OP (1915-2007), on how the emotions should aid us in the pursuit of virtue. Pinckaers' assertion that a Jansenistic repression of emotions doesn't work but that they should be guided by reason makes me think of the pioneering work done by Catholic psychiatrist Conrad W. Baars (1919-1981) (who worked with Anna Terruwe, 1911-2004). Pinckaers writes:"In later spiritual currents, this tradition, characterized by the struggle against concupiscence, will be suspicious of feelings and will insist on detachment from them in the spiritual life. Jansenism will be extreme in this regard. ... This can lead to a distrust even of love and spontaneity. Virtue becomes synonymous with the voluntary observance of the law made more meritorious because it lacks feeling. This is nothing but a modern form of stoicism. ... Our feelings, disciplined by an intelligent and firm will ... neither downplayed nor enslaved ... (but) refined and strengthened ... contribute beauty to the life of virtue" (PP. 35, 1, 2, 12).The chapter on "Humor" says there is even a place for laughter in the pursuit of virtue:"But what is a virtue that does not know how to laugh? ... Humor promotes the moral optimism needed to support virtue. ... Humor distances us from the weariness that tempts us ... humor is virtue's smile ... a smile goes well with virtue." (PP. 58, 61, 62)Though it's not included here, I'm reminded of a story about Pope John Paul II. During the mid-90s, the Holy Father was looking thinner and rundown as he struggled with his health. A nun who worked in the Vatican said to him, "I am concerned about His Holiness." To which the now canonized saint responded: "I, too, am concerned about my holiness."In the chapter on psychology and virtue, Servais Pinckaers says psychology is a noble science but that it loses it's way when it pretends that virtues and vices do not exist:"[C]an one write a book on the whole of human psychology without speaking about the virtues? ... When it comes to humans, psychology and morality cannot be entirely separate; virtues and vices stand out as human facts. ... On penalty of impoverishment and deformation, psychology must take into consideration, in one way or another, moral facts and, therefore, the virtues." (PP. 125, 127, 126)"Passions & Virtue" also contains chapters on virtue's connection to sports, leisure, rest, silence, piety, work, anger, and mercy among other topics.
