Emily Byrd Starr longs to attend Queen's Academy to earn her teaching license, but her tradition-bound relatives at New Moon refuse. She is instead offered the chance to go to Shrewsbury High School with her friends, on two conditions. The first is that she board with her disliked Aunt Ruth, but it is the second that causes Emily difficulties. Emily must not write a word during her high-school education. At first, Emily refuses the offer, unable to contemplate a life without any writing. Cousin Jimmy changes the condition slightly, saying that she cannot write a word of "fiction". Emily does not think this much of an improvement but it turns out to be an excellent exercise for her budding writing career. Although Emily clashes with Aunt Ruth and Evelyn Blake, the school's would-be writer, she starts to develop her powers of storytelling. Through a series of adventures, Emily is furnished with materials to write stories and poems, and even sees success with the short story "The Woman Who Spanked the King." In the meantime, Emily also begins to see romantic possibilities for her life. She and Teddy Kent draw closer, but due to misunderstandings and interference from Teddy's mother, the romance stalls. Emily also refuses a proposal from Perry Miller, and continues her long-lasting friendship with Dean Priest. At the end of the novel, Emily, now a budding young writer, chooses to remain at her beloved New Moon rather than leaving for New York with famous writer Janet Royal.

What a testimony to how God not only answered Rob’s mother's prayers, but how the Holy Spirit worked in Rob to bring him to a place of being open to receiving the Lord. What a journey from Rob’s dream of being a professional baseball player to where he is today! Praise God!Having a son that is 19 years old who loved baseball and pitching, follows sports closely and my daughter who plays soccer, we have seen kids and their families who are all about the "sports". Their identity and priority in life is the sport they play.Your book, your story is one that needs to be told and heard not only by young people who are placing their identity and priorities in their "sport" so they can learn from your experience, but also those who have had their dream come to an end from an injury or not making the cut. This would be a great read for young adults post high school or college athletic career, and those who experienced professional careers like you that came to an end. I think of how many athletes have had similar experiences. Your story is one of hope and restoration, God's faithfulness, forgiveness and love.I was shocked in your book when you said the guy gave you the name of a doctor to go see when you were let go from a team, because of the number of people who commit suicide! Wow! There is an area of "need" that most people (myself included) would have never thought about because it is not in the media, in our community, or given any attention. Thank you for raising the awareness.I appreciate your honesty and humility in sharing your experience. Presented here in English for the first time is a set of three of Saraha's "Adamantine Songs" (Skt. vajragiti; Tib. rdo rje'i glu), poetic works that play a central role in the Great Seal (mahamudra) tantric tradition of both India and Tibet. The tantric adept (siddha) Saraha was among the most notable figures from India's late first millennium, a time of rich religious and literary activity. His influence on Buddhist practice and poetry extended beyond the Indian subcontinent into Tibet, where his influence continues to impact every tradition that engages the practice and philosophy of the esoteric Great Seal.

In these songs, Saraha's views on the nature of mind are presented as both evocative poetry and theoretical exegesis. These songs offer a new perspective on the religious life of Buddhist India and the figure of one of its most famous adepts.

Braitstein opens the door to this important set of texts by Saraha through her elegant translation, critical edition of the Tibetan texts, and in-depth analysis of the three poems. She situates Saraha and his work both in the Tibetan Buddhist sphere and in a broader South Asian literary and religious context, closely treating the central themes in Saraha's poems, highlighting the specific siddha worldview espoused in his oeuvre, and at the same time unpacking the cryptic references contained in the songs' individual verses. With this book, Braitstein substantially increases the amount of Saraha's poetry available to an English-speaking audience, and contributes to the ever-increasing movement to explore the culture of the tantric adepts.

Perhaps this work will help cement his importance as a great siddha in the important movement that centers on Mahamudra, the Great Seal teachings and practices. As the author herself says, “After a hibernation of some 1100 years, a slumber disrupted only once for the transmission and translation of the songs from “the Indian language” to Tibetan, Saraha’s Adamantine Songs may now stir to life in the minds of their readers.” (at page 3.). Indeed, and a whole lot more the rewards to the reader who is willing to take the time and carefully read the lengthy introduction and then absorb the poems themselves.At first glance you may wonder if something is askew: An introduction of 120 pages is followed by a text of only 83 pages. Skip ahead to the text and read a few pages and then you will appreciate the length of the introduction. Every stanza of the poems is packed with meaning. Understand it, or should we say realize it, and your knowledge of the mahamudra path to awakening will advance on the road to achievement. The introduction is a significant aid to that goal.This book may be pricey, but it is also a true diamond, a welcome addition to the literature of Buddhism for the serious practitioner. This one book can be read repeatedly and there will be rewarding discoveries each time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. perfect for fans of ice sports By Melissa Sack If you watch or take part in any type of sport played on the ice you have seen this unique machine doing maintenance on the ice. The Zamboni has a hard job to do but it's made to do just that, a hard job. The book gives details on how the equipment works with out being to deep or boring. A good choice for kids that like books about transportation and moving machines.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Meet a zamboni By Judith As a children's librarian, I know how popular these authors previous books in this series have been with preschoolers. I Stink was about a garbage truck, and I'm Dirty was told from the point of view of a construction vehicle. This time in I'm Cool, we hear from a Zamboni. The hockey game is not going well because the ice is in terrible shape. The players are tripping over the ruts. Finally, the period ends and the Zamboni comes out on the rink to fix the ice. The PA announcer doubts that the Zamboni has no doubts. He explains to the reader/listener how he gets the job done. There is just enough information to explain how a Zamboni works, without going over the head of a young child. The illustrations are bright and bold. I have no doubt this picture book will be as popular as it's predecessors. I'm hoping that --like the other books in this series--Scholastic/Weston Woods will bring this book to DVD. Highly recommend, especially for boys who like hockey or trucks.
