Brighty was a real live burro who lived in the Grand Canyon. He is believed to have been brought from Flagstaf Arizona down to the Colorado River in the bottom of the Grand Canyon in 1890-1892. Whomever brought him there is believed to have drowned in the Colorado River. That persons body was never found. After that, Brighty spent the next thirty years as essentially an independent contractor. He would carry loads and passengers up and down the Bright Angel Trail in return for food. Nobody ever owned him. If the payment he received in food was not satisfactory, he would just leave and go to work for somebody else. Brighty was given his name by a prospector who found him after his original owners had died. Brighty became famous when US President Theodore Roosevelt used him to hunt mountain lions. An old prospector living in the canyon found the burro running wild along Bright Angle Creek and named him Brighty and held him not with ropes but with friendship. When the prospector mysteriously died, Brighty once again roamed free. On his trips up and down the canyon wall he hobnobbed with map-makers, artists and geologists and soon they were following his trail from rim to river.

Brighty of the Grand Canyon, by Marguerite Henry

About the Author The author of this book, Marguerite Henry, was born Marguerite Breithaupt on April 13, 1902 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She wrote more than 50 books. Almost all of her books were about animals, especially about horses. Misty of Chincoteague is her most famous story, as it has been made into a movie and possibly will be made into a TV series. Her second most famous story is Brighty of the Grand Canyon about a real-live burro who for thirty years carried passengers up and down the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon in Arizona to the Colorado River. Marguerite Henry was married to Sidney Crocker Henry. They had no children. She died in on November 26, 1997 in Rancho Santa Fe in California at the age of 95. Her books were mostly illustrated by Wesley Dennis. She wanted the best horse artist in the world to illustrate it, so she went to the library, studied the horse books and selected and sent her manuscript to Wesley Dennis. John Wesley Dennis was born May 16, 1903 in Falmouth, Massachusetts. He decided to make his living drawing horses. Dennis began by sketching racetrack winners, hoping to receive portrait commissions from the owners. He decided to further his education and traveled to France to study with an artist who an expert on horse anatomy. He illustrated more than 150 books. Most of his books were books about horses. John Wesley Dennis had a special arrangement with Marguerite Henry where she paid him a part of her royalty checks. He really worked for her, not for the publisher. He died on September 3, 1966 at age 63 in Falmouth, Massachusetts, the same place where he had been born.

The Summer of 1918 was when Brighty became their water carrier and my father and Brighty made several trips a day to a water source 200ft. below the rim. The camp was about 100yds North West from the current Grand Canyon Lodge and held up to 100 people per night at it's capacity. My Grandmother did all of the accounting and was basically in charge of the people and the kitchen, including the ordering of food, cooking and purchases from Z.C.M.I. It was a pioneering effort, to say the least. Dad's encounters with Brighty have become synonymous with early life at the North Rim. Grandfather wrote an article on Brighty for Sunset Magazine and Marguerite Henry based her book on this article. The book is fiction but has some true things such as Brighty crossing the Bridge first and being independant. I'm not sure if Brighty actually was used by Roosevelt but another Burro was used and his name was Ted. Dad used Ted his first summer at the camp. Ted was stubborn so the following summer Brighty was given them by Uncle Jim Owen who had used Brighty off and on in his cougar hunting adventures. Owen was a resident expert who worked for the government culling the cougar population and raising cattle and buffalo. Thanks. M. Krueger

This book was written by a great author, Marguerite Henry. She always wrote Realistic Fiction about horses. Even if you're not a horse lover, you would love these. In Brighty of the Grand Canyon, a donkey named Brighty lives with an old man that lives in the Grand Canyon. One night a "bad guy" comes and meets the two friends. The old man thinks he is really friendly, so he lets him stay the night. Before they went to bed, the old man tells the other too much information and that night, the other man kills him. Brighty knew when he first laid eyes on him, he could tell he was up to no good. As the story goes on, the man runs away and Brighty tries to get him in jail. Brighty goes through many tough challenges and exciting times. Brighty fights with other animals, plays with children, gets sick, and gets trapped with the man and a young boy. I'm not going to give away the end, but not very many people have even heard of Marguerite Henry, so if you think you will enjoy this book from my review, please do so. I admired Marguerite Henry for how well she wrote her stories and how her imagination worked. Sadly, she died in 1998. Once again, I hope you will enjoy the book if you decide to read it.

His Free Spirit Haunts the Canyon By Plume45 Set in the Grand Canyon during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency this charming tale introduces readers to an unlikely animal protagonist: a wild burro who lives alone, but has been partially tamed by kind men. Rescued first by the Old Timer, then from a cougar's wounds by the North Rim's resident lion-killer, Brighty experiences the gamut of human behavior toward animals and each other: from the absurd, the selfish, the ambitious, and even the criminal. As the only witness to the evil schemes of a thieving murderer, Brighty relies on his own natural instincts which warn him about vicious Jake Irons. Ruthless Irons murders the kindly and trusting prospector in order to obtain his copper mine. The sheriff frets for several years that the heinous crime goes unsolved and that the murderer remains unpunished. But Uncle Jimmy Owens' moon-lily tea helps trick a confession from the cruel scoundrel-with Brighty as a non-verbal but wary witness. Even in his lonely pilgrimages down to Bright Angel Creek the burro has many adventures on his own; he even crosses the Colorado River twice on a bridge which he helped men construct. Will he one day prefer to livewith his own kind as king of the herd? Or Be satisfied to be honored and befriended by human beings? Teddy Roosevelt looms larger than life as his personality is interwoven with Marguerite Henry's fictitious characters. For it was this charismatic president who devoted his efforts to setting aside the wilds of the Grand Canyon in the form of a national park. Readers rejoice at Brighty's free spirit, which is said to prance through the gorges and trails which he cut en route to his beloved North Rim. This gentle burro epitomizes the youth and vigor of the primeval canyon-showing how humans and animals should cooperate to preserve America's natural wilderness. Delightfully illustrated by Wesley Dennis, this book is for outdoors enthusiasts and animal lovers of all ages.

She'd promised never to be like her mother. One man stands in the way of that promise. Renee Winters has the voice and the face of an angel. She’s the worship leader at her church, runs the Brides for Christ program for young teenage girls, and is the chaste “bride” modeling the gowns for the bridal shop she works at. The problem? It’s all a lie. As a child, Renee's alcoholic mother paraded a slew of men in and out their home. Renee vowed she would never turn out like her, but one broken night, she ran from the nightmare of her home and into the arms of handsome bad-boy Ian McKnight. She tries to erase her moment of weakness with years of faithful service. Yet each time she stands before young girls, preaching about the beauty of remaining pure, she is painfully aware of her broken vows. Then Ian returns—a wounded soldier, a recovering alcoholic, and no stranger to broken vows. Ian knows the truth, and Renee avoids him, unsure if she can trust him—or herself. When the bridal shop hires him to create a website, she realizes she must face the truth. With his camera pointed in her direction, he tries to capture the real Renee, the one behind the veil of lies. Will Ian tempt Renee to break her promises again, or will he help her understand the true nature of her vows?

Veils and Vows (Reconciled and Redeemed Book 3), by Michelle Lynn Brown

About the Author When Michelle Lynn Brown was a teenager, her mother used to take her to used books stores at least once a month. It was there she fell in love with the written word. As a writer, she uses this passion to share with others the joy of having a personal and intimate relationship with Christ. She is a housewife, mother of three, writer, blogger, hopeless romantic, and a cuddly lap for one very large cat. She was born in Dayton, Ohio, but raised in El Paso, Texas. The Lord has blessed her with the opportunity to live in many locations, from Germany to Pennsylvania, where she now resides. Like the flawed characters that grace her books, she has had many stumbles and struggles in her life. God’s grace and mercy through these trials have kept her on her knees. It is from this humble position that she seeks to minister through her writing – not as someone who has it all figured out, but just someone who has figured out how wonderful and awesome God is.

Renee is an imperfect woman seeking perfect love. She must find the strength to forgive herself and others before she can open her heart to love. Through God and His mercy, she learns to trust again. This is not a pretty story. It deals with premarital sex, alcohol and drugs. But, it is a story of faith, hope, and grace. I recommend this for ages 14 and up.

The premise of the book was good, dealing with sex before marriage and having a mother that lives loose, but I didn't like the way it came across. I would only recommend this book to those above 18 years of age.

This book is truly amazing. God works through Michelle like I've never read before. The characters Ian & Renee are very relatable. Their childhoods and struggles from that are something many people with be able to connect with. Sometimes I felt like I was reading my own life story....which makes the book that much better!!! I'm the queen of spoiling stuff and I don't want to do that. I want you to read this book and enjoy the journey Michelle takes you on. But I will leave you with this....You will see you two very realistic characters struggle with temptations, bad decisions, fear of repeating parents mistakes but also see healing, peace, redemption and love through the power of God.

Fun but not as educational By Yourstruly There are lots of colorful pictures and stickers kids would love to stick on the pages they are meant for but this is not very educational. There's just small amounts of information on the various continents. The age group that would enjoy this is probably 7, maximum 8, and under because they'll probably enjoy the stickers and that still provides some incidental learning.

Imports, exports, natural resources - I'm not interested in that stuff *now*, much less when I was a kid! So it was refreshing to flip though Lonely Planet's Adventures Around the Globe. It's not a comprehensive, every-detail-you-never-wanted-to-know-about-a-country book. It's more of a dip-your-toe-in-and-get-a-taste-for-how-different-places-live kind of book. There's no mention of country capitals or population stats or any of that stuff kids usually skip over anyway. What there *is* is interesting facts about different places and the people and animals who live there. Did you know that giraffes only sleep 30 minutes a night - and while standing up? My 6 year old was most interested in the sticker scenes. The stickers were difficult to peel off, but that's a minor complaint about an otherwise awesome book!

By laurathomas61 Adventures Around The Globe is one of several fun activity books in the “Adventures In…” series. This is a heavy book with large glossy pages. There’s maps, spot the difference games, and pages to color. There’s also a lot of fun facts about the places you visit in the book. Learn about the native wildlife, about the oceans, about mountains and cities and people.Solve the maze, find the animals, and then head to the back of the book. There are pages and pages of stickers. You find the corresponding page and start sticking away, creating your own tapestry of adventure.Three generations of my family, my mother, myself, and my son, had some fun with the Spot The Difference games. We took turns trying to find all of them and whoever did it in the least amount of time won.I really wanted to get to the stickers and create some fun adventures. But, I have plans to give this book as a gift and let a special someone have all the fun.The pages are thick and shiny and the colors so vivid the images leap out at you. And when I opened the book, it smelled so good. I love the smell of books.Even after you do all of the activities, you’ll keep coming back to this wonderful book. There’s always something you missed, some fun fact or something hidden in a picture.I recommend this to all ages. For the kids, they’ll spend hours immersed in these activities, and for the adults, hey, we are all kids inside.I received this book for my honest review.

A scientist and former evangelical argues that holding onto a belief in a literal, historical Adam has forced many Christians to reject science and become intellectually isolated from the modern world.   The Bible’s first man stands at the center of a crisis that is shaking much of Christianity. In the evangelical world, scholars have been ostracized and banished from their academic communities for endorsing a modern scientific understanding of the world, even as they remained strong Christians. Self-appointed gatekeepers of traditional theology demand intellectual allegiance to an implausible interpretation of the Genesis creation story, insisting that all humanity must be descended from a single, perfect human pair, Adam and Eve. Such a view is utterly at odds with contemporary science. It wasn’t always this way. Karl Giberson spotlights the venerable tradition of Christian engagement with new knowledge and discoveries. When global exploration, anthropology, geology, paleontology, biblical studies, and even linguistics cast doubt on the historicity of Adam and his literal fall into sin, Christians responded by creatively reimagining the creation story, letting Adam “evolve” to accommodate his changing context. Even conservative evangelical institutions until recently encouraged serious engagement with evolutionary science, unhindered by the straitjacket of young-earth creationism, intelligent design, or other views demanding that Adam be a historical figure.Giberson calls for a renewed conversation between science and Christianity, and for more open engagement with new scientific discoveries, even when they threaten central doctrines. Christians should not be made to choose between their faith and their understanding of the universe. Instead, as Giberson argues, they should follow in the once robust tradition of exploring science openly within the broad contours of Christian belief.

Honest, candid, enlightening, and disruptive, Giberson establishes a long-overdue foundation for viable faith and challenges Christians to rediscover the wonder, mystery, and reality of their God.”—Richard G. Colling, retired professor of Biology, Olivet Nazarene University.  Professor Colling departed Olivet after thirty years of teaching because of criticism of his support of evolution in his book Random Designer“Was Adam the first human being and was his poor choice to eat the forbidden fruit the ‘original sin’ that ruined things for the rest of us? That’s the question that just won’t go away, and for many fundamentalist and evangelical Christians today it is the hill to die on—and the hill on which to sacrifice those who disagree. Through surveying the history of Adam from ancient Israel to the current crisis, and rooted in his own extensive experience, Giberson gives us a compelling, engaging, and accessibly written exposé of this troubling trend—and points us toward a better way of embracing this foundational biblical story.”—Peter Enns is Abram S. Clemens professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University, and author of The Bible Tells Me So: Why Defending Scripture Has Made Us Unable to Read It. Professor Enns was forced to leave Westminster Theological Seminary after 14 years of teaching and administration because of his book Inspiration and Incarnation: Evangelicals and The Problem of the Old Testament.“Saving the Original Sinner chronicles Christianity's long struggle to understand the meaning of Adam and his Fall into sin, even as it became clear that Adam never existed. Giberson pays homage to those souls bold enough to wrestle with this reality—and who often paid a heavy price for their efforts to integrate the findings of science with the Christian faith.  I join those scholars in gratitude for this wise, informative, eloquent, and yet troubling book. The intellectual viability of evangelicalism may well depend on whether its institutions act with the courage that Giberson commends to them.”—John Schneider teaches philosophy at Grand Valley State University and is publishing actively on the implications of evolutionary science for Christian Faith. Long a leading evangelical theologian, Professor Schneider was forced to leave Calvin College after 25 years of teaching for publishing a paper suggesting that Adam and Eve were not historical figures.

Bruggink This book is about and for Christians wrestling with questions about a historical Adam and Eve. Giberson begins by discussing the current controversy over the historical Adam, in which he is personally enmeshed. He then discusses the history of the doctrine of original sin, the history of concordist strategies for relating science and the Bible, God’s Two Books (Scripture and nature) and the racial implications of views on a historical Adam.During his discussion, Giberson breaks down the Christian responses to biological evolution into fundamentalists circling the wagons, traditionalists trying their best to embrace science, and modernists understanding the Bible as a purely human book. He makes an important distinction between the less important biblical Adam (how and when he was created) and the more important theological Adam (the source of sin, death and the curse).Giberson concludes that “the key to making peace with evolution was learning to do without an historical Adam” (p. 172), that “Adam and Eve, as described in Genesis, cannot have been historical figures” (p. 173), and that “there is no original sin and there was no original sinner”, but that “we must not forget that the Christian tradition’s long conversation about sin was primarily about what was wrong with us and only secondarily about how we got to be that way.” (p. 176)Meanwhile, his publisher has committed the bibliological sin of endnotes instead of footnotes, and has compounded that sin by listing the endnotes only by chapter number, while the text is identified on each page only by chapter name, making the notes even more unnecessarily difficult to find. This ought to earn his publisher a spot in at least the “vestibule” of Dante’s hell.Seriously, Giberson’s book is a well written, informative, and interesting history of Christianity’s views on historical Adam over the past two thousand years. He does not go into how Christianity needs to deal with the new reality, but Giberson is, after all, a scientist, not a theologian. Others, like John Bimson, Robin Collins, Peter Enns, Daniel Harlow, Denis Lamoureux, John Schneider, Raymund Schwager, and Christopher Southgate are dealing with the theological issues, for which a satisfactory resolution has yet to be found. Theologians are going to be busy for a long time.I heartily recommend this book to Christians struggling with the historicity of a historical Adam and its implications on Christian theology and anyone else interested in the discussion.

Oord Saving the Original Sinner is the most recent book from Karl Giberson exploring key issues in science and religion. Giberson's prose is winsome and informative. Although I teach at the university level on the subject, I learned several bits of historical information. The book is a product of extensive research! The concluding chapters were particularly stimulating. In them, Giberson mentions the consequences for Evangelical scholars who propose ways of reading Adam different from the usual/historical ways. Giberson argues that basic concept of original sin points to a deep truth about the evil prevalent throughout history and evident today.Unfortunately, Giberson is probably right when he says "anyone challenging the historicity of Adam should probably abandon evangelicalism, since they are likely to be ejected anyway." I pray this book helps to change this pattern of ejecting those who dare to explore the best in science and the best in theology.Thomas Jay Oord

As an atheist I started reading Saving the Original Sinner fearing it might be a dull religious screed eschewing rationalism for faith based ideas of Christian ethics and politics...happily this wasn't the case at all, in fact quite the opposite. Mostly a "Modernist" Christian defense of science against Christian fundamentalism and biblical literalism, Mr. Giberson clearly and convincingly details how for the last 1600 years or so, the concept of a literal Adam (and other Biblical myths) has worked as a counterweight to cultural and scientific progress within Western Christianity. Giberson argues that Biblical literalism isn't compatible with the scientific method, rational thinking, evolution, etc., and that its this literal interpretation that has caused many of the abuses of Christianity: racism, slavery, closed-minded anti-scientific irrationalism, persecution of heretics and so on. His arguments are well reasoned pleas to stem the tide of increasingly isolated and fanatical American Christian fundamentalist theology. Giberson opens and closes the book by discussing how he and other university professors have been fired or otherwise shunned for teaching evolution and anti-literalism at certain evangelical universities in the US. Apparently intellectual freedom and open dialogue don't exist for questions of faith at these schools where they'd like to prevent the spread of heresy.A highly recommended work indeed, with the caveat that it seems primarily intended as an inner-faith dialogue between Christians. Many of the arguments will likely be superfluous for the non-religious or those of other faiths, but even as an outsider I found it a fascinating discussion, as well written and reasoned as any of the current anti-religion/pro-science works of Richard Dawkins, Daniel C. Dennett, Christopher Hichens, Jerry Coyne, John Loftus and such.

ONE AUGUST MORNING THE TRUE STORY OF LIZZIE BORDEN BY TROY TAYLOR LIZZIE BORDEN TOOK AN AXE... OR DID SHE? Lizzie Borden is a name that has lived in infamy. As everyone knows, she's the young woman who "took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks" and then "gave her father 41." Everyone seems to know the rhyme, but most people don't know the truth behind the grim story of one of America's most famous unsolved murders. In this new entry in the "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" series, author Troy Taylor delves into the true story of the Borden Murders, revealing what really happened on that morning in August 1892, how Lizzie was hounded by the police, prosecutors, and reporters, and then finally acquitted - yet always believed to be guilty. Was she a murderer or truly innocent? Did she swing the hatchet that killed her parents, or was Lizzie simply part of a plot that accidentally led to murders committed by a madman? You'll have the chance to decide for yourself as the suspects are revealed, the conspiracies unveiled, and the strange circumstances of this haunting case are presented. Forget everything you already think you know about this compelling case and discover what did - and what did not - happen in the story of Lizzie Borden! What dark secrets have never been told? 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A new look at Lizzie Borden By S. O'Toole The Lizzie Borden case is one of those events that divides people into two camps; Lizzie did it or she didn't. The fact is, the truth will probably never be known. If she did it the prosecution blew the case; if she didn't...who did? Taylor's theory as to who the killer was is compelling and made with reasonable argument. Is he right? Who knows, but the logic seems well reasoned.I've seen arguments here that claim the author "cherry picks" his evidence but I disagree. He's not the first to point out the timeline doesn't work for Lizzie to be the killer. He's not the first to bring attention to what was obviously overlooked during the initial phases of the investigation and he's not the first to point out the obvious; the evidence collected points to Lizzie Borden as innocent of the murders. The prosecution believed they had no case even then; based on the actual evidence and not the hearsay and gossip that was then (and remains now) a huge part of this case.In the end I doubt this book sways anyone from one camp to the other. For anyone on the fence or interested in the crime that hasn't decided, this book is a must read as it offers a new look at the murders, the trial and the aftermath overall and makes a reasonable argument that someone other than Lizzie Borden took that axe and gave....well, you know the rest.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. author believes Lizzie was innocent By Gryphon50 The author believes that Lizzie was innocent. Some of the "evidence" for this is ridiculous. Here I will refute some of the author's points:(1) He says Andrew came home at 11am and was dead by 11:15. Other books question this time frame. But he says Lizzie did not have time to kill him, clean up, go out to the barn, eat pears, look for lead, etc. Hello! Those last three items were what SHE said she did! No witness ever saw her doing those things, which conveniently take her out of the house and away from the murder.(2) The author says Lizzie could not kill within a short amount of time. Then who could? She couldn't, but some unnamed perp could kill Abby, wait around undetected in a tiny house for an hour and a half, kill Andrew as soon as he lies down, clean up, stash the murder weapon, and leave the house unseen by anyone. She can't do it, but he can.(3) Also, he said Lizzie did not hate Abby (!) and didn't call her mother because she was an adult. Really? Because Lizzie was raised by Abby from the age of four on. Lizzie didn't call her mother because Abby evidently was not a very motherly person. She definitely hated her and would snap at anyone who referred to Abby as her mother.(4) Then there is the tired contention that there was "no blood" on Lizzie. But there was a speck of blood on the outside of her petticoat six inches from the floor, which she blamed on her period (on the OUTSIDE of the petticoat, SIX INCHES from the floor, that makes a lot of sense). The author says a small spatter of blood on the back of her petticoat is insignficant. When was the last time you were spattered with blood?? As for it being on the back, a petticoat is like a skirt, it can be spun around (for instance, if you got undressed and then re-dressed).(5) Lizzie burned a dress in the kitchen stove, on a day when police were searching the house looking for evidence. At no point did she offer the dress to police, although she knew they were looking for a dress. The author says yes, Lizzie burned a dress, but a witness said it was not the dress she saw Lizzie in the day of the murder. But Lizzie would most likely have CHANGED HER CLOTHES before the witness saw her.(6) The author agrees with the defense that Lizzie's attempted purchase of cyanide the day before is not relevant because the victims were killed with an ax. This logic is mind-boggling to me. She didn't care how they died, as long as they were died. It shows an attempt on her part.In short, the author makes sure to cherry pick facts to put forth his pet theory on Lizzie's innocence. While it is a well-written book, I can't recommend it.

It seems to cover the entire story and not just the well-known high spots. The book is well-researched but contains a lot of typos.Lizzie Borden's story is covered in more detail than I have seen before. It is a failing of Americans that they are unable to assume a person's innocence until they are proven guilty in a court of law. This may be true the world over, but Americans are guaranteed that right in the Constitution. In this case several lives were destroyed because, even though Lizzie Borden was acquitted, she was never assumed to be innocent.

By Muttley I bought this activity book for my four years old son without knowing what to expect. For those who don't know what thinking skills mean here is a list of tasks covered:1- does it belong? (in a big picture find objects that does not look right within the context)2- categorize the similar objects in a row, find the odd one3-Align objects with another that has a similarity (toy and a toy box etc)4-Find the two same objects among similar looking objects.5-What comes next(solve the pattern of a series and find what is to follow)6-Find the sequence of the objects (three events are pictured and the task is to find which is the earliest and what comes later)7-Match colors and shapes8-Find an object or person in a picture by looking at a description (Jake has a flower and Matt is the one next to him etc.)9-Basic counting skills10-Coloring small areas according to the color coded letter that is in it.11-Match a solution to a question (multiple solutions and questions are given and you need to match which is the answer for which question)12-Finding the relation between two objectsAs you can see, it is a very comprehensive collection of various activities and some are really tough. Although it says it is for 3-5 years olds. I as an adult need to think for a few moments to be able to answer some of the tasks. It is highly challenging but a wide range of ages can find it interesting and educating. But parents should be helping the kid and be careful not to let him get discouraged upon failing a task. For a full color 64 page well constructed activity book a price tag of $3.5 is a real bargain as well.
