Most Christians appear to approach the Bible with awe, much in the same way that they would approach Shakespeare or opera - deep mysteries understood by a few and veiled to the rest of us. However, understanding the Bible depends upon understanding two simple, yet fundamental themes which weave together all of Scripture: Covenant and Kingdom. The whole Bible from beginning to end is about these two things - God forging a relationship with us and then working through us to express his love and power. It is the DNA of the Bible. The better we understand this, the better we grasp the Bible as a whole. This will only lead to good things for us - confidence about what God is saying and a more certain and sure journey of faith as the Scriptures come alive in our hands.

Perfect blend of theory and practical--a must read By WheatonGuy18 I think it's easy to be cynical when you approach a new book about anything missional, particularly a book with one of the defining characteristics being that it's practical and will help teach you "how" to launch, sustain, disciple people in and multiply missional Missional Communities. I certainly was that cynical person. (BTW--Missional Communities as defined in this book are a group of 20-50 people who are on the same mission together with community and spiritual life within the group beginning on the mission field, rather than an added thing). But just a few pages in, you realize this book is something very different. Rather than being a book written a year after the authors discovered something "new", this book was written after 20 years of experimenting, failing, succeeding and growing Missional Communities. It is a wealth of thoughtful reflections, suggestions, cautions and practical steps that could only have been learned on the front line of mission for a LONG period of time. Perhaps more impressive is that the church where this all began (in the UK) became one of the largest churches in Europe quite some time ago through using Missional Communities...and they are just now getting around to writing a book on what they've learned! Also, littered throughout the book are story after story after story of churches that have done this in the United States, so they are often able to illustrate a point with an actual story of an actual MC doing it.So for me, the length of time that went into compiling the information and the array of examples and stories through the United States did a lot to keep down my more cynical nature. The book is divided into 5 Sections: Opening Thoughts, Key Concepts, Launch Guide, MC Life and Case Studies.Part 1 | Opening Thoughts. The book begins with an excellent Introduction that really paints the landscape of the American church in a helpful way. What's strong about the Introduction is that it's written by someone other than the authors who stumbled upon what these guys had been doing and was able to capture that experience well. Essentially, the Introduction captures the feeling of knowing that things are broken, wanting to change it, but not even quite knowing where to start: "Many people were writing about the social theory and theology of movements and mission, but there were no clear practices for doing it. Only a few people were writing practical books on the way forward, and even then it only seemed incrementally different from what had come before. It really wasn't any more "missional." It seemed like there were a lot of thinkers who didn't practice and a lot of practitioners who didn't think."The rest of Part 1 gives a little history as to where Missional Communities came from, a little bit about the authors (which was actually quite interesting) and then defining the terms the authors would be using throughout the book. This was definitely helpful as different people use different terms...well...differently!Part 2 | Key Concepts. The point of this section was to show the broad principles that have shaped MCs in the past 20 years. In other words, what are the BIG THINGS the authors learned along the way that led them to MCs as they are expressed today. If you've read a lot on missional theology or practice, the first half of this section will probably be re-tread, but still helpful for setting the stage for what's to come. However, what got interesting was when they dove into the reason for the size of the groups (20-50 people). They laid out a few very compelling arguments for having groups this size. First, they said while some people define missional communities as small groups with a missional edge/focus to them, they believe it needs to be larger. Why? Because they started there as well and found that "these groups were small enough to care but not large enough to dare." Basically, it's hard to be really effective in mission with such a small group of people. It's not that it can't be, but it's difficult. The second really compelling argument was looking at research done in the 1960's by Edward Hall that showed the different "spaces" that people inhabit: Public Space (75 people or more), Social Space (20-70 people), Personal Space (6-12 people) and Intimate Space (1-2 people) and how we group ourselves in those different spaces. What I really took away was that the research showed that people derive their primary identity from the Social Space...the group of 20-70 people, which most churches don't even have. So rather than having people find their identity for "church" in the big, more anonymous Public Space (the worship service), people will naturally gravitate towards the Social Space, where it's "small enough to care, but large enough to dare." In other words, people know when you're missing, but there's still a mass of people to do something significant. Really good stuff here. The rest of part 2 looks at Missional vs. Attractional, Leadership in MCs, the story of a Missional Community that exemplified all of these concepts (which was really helpful) and a great section on discipleship (which I thought was of particular importance as they made the case that if you don't have a way of investing in, discipling and holding your MC leaders accountable, it will all fall to pieces pretty quickly. Glad they hit on that and how they've learned to do it).Part 3 | Launch Guide. This section is aimed mostly at people looking at making a paradigm shift in more established churches using a Sunday-centric way of being the church. But it also has a GREAT addendum for church planters launching with Missional Communities rather than a worship service, as well as a fascinating chapter on how to grow Missional Communities. Some of the Launch Guide for established churches was a little dense at times and a bit confusing, but it was heaving on details and practical help from people who have done it before. Helpful and really practical.Part 4 | MC Life. This is easily the most practical section of the book. After you've launched Missional Communities...what do you do next? How do you do real mission? What about worship? Teaching? Kids? Finances? Can teenagers be in Missional Communities? How does it relate to the wider church well? What about leadership? How do you define the vision of the group? On and on and on. This was where the authors 20 years of experience with MCs really came to light as they addressed thing after thing. What was really helpful is that they didn't always give an exact answer but a few answers. For instance, on the issue of kids within a Missional Community. Rather than saying, "kids should be in MCs 100% of the time and here's how to do it" or the opposite of that, they listed out three different ways of dealing with kids in a MC (kids are fully integrated, kids are fully separate, kids are integrated some of the time and separate some of the time) and gave pro's and con's from their experience in doing it and helpful for suggestions for how to do each of them. In the end, they said it depends on the MC and the context they find themselves in. Things like that were very helpful and underlined the flexibility of MCs in almost any context. This section will definitely service as a resource guide for people to come back to time and time again. It's a "how-to" book without saying there is only one way to do it. There's a form, but not a formula.Part 5 | Case Studies. The case studies were really helpful in seeing this play out in real life, but I only found the first two to be helpful. They were both church plants that had done it. The second two, both done from established churches starting to use MCs, weren't as strong as one was a newspaper article taken from a local paper about the church and the other was Q&A with the pastor. While interesting to read, they lacked the clarity of the first two case studies.Lastly, the Appendix is full of more notes, details and information that you'd want to reference in the future.Overall, the book was EXCELLENT. It is by far the best book I've read on both the theology and practice of being the church differently in the United States in a way that actually has worked both in Europe as well as North America. If you're at all interested in the future of the church, I'd pick up this book.

Best Resource Available on Missional Communities By Benjamin Sternke (Originally reviewed on my blog at [...]A few weeks ago I read through Launching Missional Communities, a new book by Mike Breen and Alex Absalom. The super short review: it is the single best resource available on Missional Communities (MCs). I absolutely loved it.The main reason this book is so good is that Breen and Absalom are practioners, not just theorists. Now, as an INTP, I can certainly get excited about a robust and elegant theory! But I shared the frustration of the church planter who wrote the introduction to the book. As he was searching books and podcasts for help on cultivating and implementing MCs, he found that "There were a lot of people writing about the social theory and theology of movements and mission, but no clear practices for doing it... It seemed like there were a lot of thinkers who didn't practice and a lot of practitioners who didn't think."The authors of LMC step into this void as practioners who think. Breen practically invented MCs 15 years ago when he was leading St. Thomas' Church in Sheffield, England. Absalom was there with Breen, and has since planted hundreds of MCs and worked with several established churches at a more strategic level, helping them transition to a MC model. Because of this, this book is dripping with wisdom that comes from the blood and guts experience of actually doing this stuff for many years.Full disclosure, too: Mike Breen now lives in the US and leads 3DM, a coaching/consulting ministry helping American churches transition to a more discipling, missional way of being the church. The church plant I'm leading has been part of a Learning Community for the past eight months or so, and in that context I've been taught and coached by both Mike and Alex, so I'm perhaps biased to like this book from the get-go.But whether I'm listening to them in-person or reading their words in this book, I find their input to be refreshingly down-to-earth and eminently practical. They understand the process of transition, what kinds of battles and roadblocks will present themselves, and what kind of resolve it really takes to move a church culture into discipleship and mission. Because of this, a lot of we-know-how-you-feel-but-you-can-do-it! encouragement comes through in this book. There are three main sections to the book, along with a brief intro and a few case studies: 1. Key Concepts (theological, practical, and sociological reasons MCs work) 2. Launch Guide (practical steps to start MCs in your church) 3. Missional Community Life (practical nuts-and-bolts of leading MCs)The Key Concepts section is a great overview of the what and why of MCs: This isn't just re-naming something or making a few tweaks to the small group ministry. There is a qualitative difference going on here, and this section helps people understand some of the underlying ideas that make MCs work. For example, why is it so important for MCs to be "mid-sized?" Why can't we just add a "missional" element to our current small groups and call them MCs? I've written about this before ([...]), but it turns out it really is an issue. Size matters. A lot of churches are discovering these things as they go. For example, my friend Bob Hyatt, who planted a church in Portland several years ago, recently tweeted that they've been "trying to do mission at the Gathering (80-120 people) and home group (6-12) level. Too big and too small respectively."The Launch Guide is an extremely practical (and flexible) plan for introducing MCs into the life of an established church. Lots of great practical advice there. But the final section (Missional Community Life) was probably the most helpful for me. It's simply page after page of nuts-and-bolts on the ins-and-outs of leading MCs: what to do with kids, where to meet, how they grow, how to develop leaders, what to do first, creative ways to worship together, ideas for developing relationships, fresh concepts for mission... etc.In my opinion, this is the single best resource available on MCs, because it's not just about what they are, but also about how to start, lead, and multiply them, from two people who have probably been doing it as long as anyone on the planet. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to understand MCs more fully, but especially to leaders who want some practical wisdom in leading MCs and/or transitioning a church to MCs.

I am very sad that this is the final book of the D.O.T.S series, and I really took my time and savored every page. I got angry, I wanted to hug Olivia and kiss Sebastian in all his cuteness towards Olivia. Don't get me wrong, Finn is still the favorite. I really wanted to punch Selene in the face and Cheer Fallon on to not give up.This book just had such a great story on each character. Olivia and her trek thru the woods, how even the tree's helped her. The witches and how they were caught and used as pawns. How Love does conquer all, but not true love (though that helps) but the love for family, the order. How Phoebe, Olivia, Carmen Avery and Stasia are a group of girls that stick together no matter what. How sometimes doing what is right, is above what you want for yourself and most important... you make your own destiny. Everything that is written can be changed. This book was truly the perfect ending to an amazing series. The twists this book took really keeps your attention. I hope that the author, Kristen Day, comes back and does follow up stories to so many of these characters. They are all strong in their own ways and have their own destiny to tell. Be prepared to laugh and cry.Well done Kristen Day, Well done!!!

It was a believable end to the story that wasn't rushed, and answered most questions I had. Thank you to Kristen Day for sharing a wonderful piece of your mind with me!That being said I did have some qualms. There were times when a characters name was used incorrectly, or they referred to themselves in the the person because the author got the POV wrong. It didn't hurt the story for me, but impacted me enough that I feel I have to tell you about it.Warning SPOILER***********************†*********************SPOILER***************************SPOILER********Don't look I you don't want to know....I also got really mad that the whole time the Nereids were losing their essence Stasia didn't just pull essence from the moon. It helped her when she didn't even know it could way back when Nadia was holding Finn captive, but now all of a sudden the moonlight does nothing for her??Back to good things ******that are still spoilers******I love that Sebastian and Olivia get a HEAAlso after Stasia died I wasn't really affected (part of me figured she would be back) but reading how devastating it was for Finn brought tears to my eyes. Ms. Day I will forever be searching for my own Finnegan Morrison!Again thank you!!!

I loved every book and couldn't wait for more. I wish this series hadn't of ended. Wow, is all I can say. I am so hooked on these characters. The writing was just enough romance to bring you heart stopping scenes but still left it clean enough to enjoy reading. The suspense was out of this world and I fell in love with all of the characters. I am so glad the last two books gave us different POV's as well. Get this series today!

By Momtographer [[VIDEOID:57288ea0fded6dd669e55807efb71cad]] My son is 7 and he loves this book! We use it as a supplement to school and a way to explore his interests in a scholarly way! I have included a video review. He currently has a large stack of animal books on top of his journal to take out and learn. Use it in the summer or Christmas break! Even public/private school kids can get some great learning done over summer vacation with this! And keeping it fun!**I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review. I by no means review these at a high rating due to that fact...this review is honest and I love her books!

Our homeschool style has been described as "relaxed," "eclectic," and "unschoolish," to name a few. I was seeking a little more direction for my kids' interest-lead reading and these journals have been exactly what I've been looking for for the last 3 years! There are lots of repeats, but because they choose their books based on their interests, they don't seem to mind. I sit with my non-reader to do the pages and it has been one part of our homeschool day that he consistently enjoys. This particular journal is SMALLER than the other journals for readers. I rated 4 stars because I feel that the price is steep for what it is. Even so, I would purchase again if my kids continue to enjoy journaling.

Santa's parents think their little one is absolutely wonderful, even though he has a booming voice instead of a baby's gurgle, loves to stand in front of the refrigerator, gives his birthday presents away, trains his hamsters to pull a matchbox sleigh ... and has an unusual interest in chimneys. The adorably funny portrait of an oddball kid who fulfills his destiny - and two very proud parents.

When Santa Was a Baby, by Linda Bailey

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—From the time he was born, Santa is a bit of a special child. From a booming laugh as a baby to a marked preference for red and cold weather as a toddler to the habit of rewrapping and giving away his presents, his ways set him apart from other children. Still, his parents adore him and know that someday he'll become something amazing—maybe a fireman, with all that red? Given his lifestyle choices, his eventual career as Santa Claus is the perfect one, as far as his proud parents are concerned. Santa as a youngster is a strapping, blond, cheerful lad, while his doting parents are plump and smiley—in one scene, his mom wears a cheerful sundress and hat while his dad sports a polo shirt and sandals with white knee socks. VERDICT A fond, reassuring look at the eccentric childhood of a much-beloved holiday figure.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

How did he become the jolly elf who delivers presents to all the children in the world? An imaginative and charming tale about what Santa was like as a baby and a small child. Santa stars as a cute baby with a gorgeous Ho,ho,ho (no baby babbling for him) before becoming a toddler/young child who got even more enjoyment out of giving his toys and presents away than receiving him. He loved red and wanted to wear it all the time. He had a best friend who was short who loved making toys. Even though they were different, they we accepted by all the other kids. Santa's parents go through what all parents do in trying to figure out what he will become as he grows older. Of course they are thrilled when he grows up and becomes exactly what he is, the wonderful Spirit of Christmas, Santa Claus. A Christmas story about Santa for any and all to add to their bookshelves.

By Paul Mastin Wal-Mart started putting Christmas trees on display weeks ago, so I guess it's not too early for a Christmas book! Linda Bailey has added a new title to the every-growing list of Christmas books, When Santa Was a Baby. Along with illustrator Genevieve Godbout, Bailey takes us back to Santa's childhood. He was an exceptional baby, with merry dimples and a nose like a cherry. He enjoyed giving his birthday presents away to children in the neighborhood. He showed an interest in fireplaces, extreme cold, flying reindeer, and always insisted on wearing the color red.Godbout's illustrations look great, giving an "instant classic" feel to the book. Bailey's text is full of references to traditional Santa lore. I was, however, left unsatisfied with the transition from "Santa as a child" to "Santa as we all know and love him." One moment, Santa's in high school, wearing his red jacket, with a sack slung over his shoulder. The next moment, "he followed his childhood dreams," setting up shop at the North Pole. I know it's a children's book, but that still seemed like a huge jump with no explanation.Maybe I'm quibbling. I do like When Santa Was a Baby. I'm just not sure it will work its way into a list of Christmas favorites to be read again and again. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

It's the story of Santa, from a normal point of view: parents had a kid an discover the child's personality as they grow up. simple, right? Not for these parents! From the very beginning, they know little Santa is different. He's always happy, hates the cold, love to laugh in a particular fashion... This book is so cute, I'm trying to decide if I'm going to give it to my Ewoks or not! I initially bought it for them, but the bright colors, the Norman Rockwell-like illustrations; it's got everything I love in a children's book. My babies are so lucky I love them so! It will help you find not only your twin flames and soul mate but as well as yourself. You can discover how to connect with them and forge a bond. It is also insightful on how soul mates come to exist and how twin flames are related. I highly recommend this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I really liked this book a lot By Tom I really liked this book a lot, aside the fact it is very short, about 36 pages in total. Also I noticed there was no pictures or diagrams to help illustrate or substantiate the author's point of view. With that being said, I felt as if the author went above and beyond explaining the very complex yet at times simplex views of an enlightened writer revealing and shedding a light on Soulmates and Twin Flames. The author did a great job explaining the differences and some of the similar characteristics of the two. The author was very clear in providing the steps necessary to meet your soulmate or twin flame, how to recognize the loved one, and just as important how to connect. So many people need this book, I needed this book, to aid me in connecting with this soul. There is a calmness in the writing, a confidence that is undeniable. I wish it would have been longer and had some pictures, but I am really happy I got it. This is one of those books, you will not soon forgot. I am so very happy I got it, it answers so many questions I have, and puts a light to illuminate the path I am currently on. Thank you S.J. Morgan!!!

This book explains perfectly what a real soul mate is in the simplest of terms. It is very easy to follow, author stays on point throughout which kept my focus on topic. I have found soul mates of different levels, this book covers that in great detail, the different levels. Now I am looking forward to advancing those levels with some of my soul mates, all thanks to this book for helping understand how and why we have soul mates on different levels. There is so much more wonderful information, but this topic was my focus. Thank you SJ Morgan, for helping my soul advance a little more. Priceless!!!

By Anna Everett If you are a christian this is a must read...Maria relates the progressive decline of our society and our current situation and what we as christians should do to be able to stand in the coming difficult times for Christians...

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Yeah, but? By Michael A. Johnson The first depressing half shows how we are well on the way to persecution. Hard to get through as it is so depressing you want to quit. The second half is a really good section on the Christian life and doctrine. First rate, but not much to do with what to do when persecuted, except perhaps to continue doing it even if persecuted. So it is a good book to read, especially for those thinking the pre-trib rapture will never allow us to be persecuted despite hundreds of thousands already persecuted over seas.

This is book II of an ongoing series of interviews held with beings from Zeta Reticuli. Hypnotherapist Mary Barr was asked by one of her clients if he could talk to aliens while under hypnosis. What ensued was years of communication with three beings from Zeta Reticuli who call themselves Han, Zestra, and Gen. Steve Reichmuth, her client, proved to be a dynamic and detailed telepathic link between the Zetan beings, Steve, and the hypnotherapist. The range of questions and answers cover science, biology, Earth and Zetan history, the universe, and alien spirituality and case studies. The validity of this contact comes from the callibre of the questions asked and answered. Most often, mankind had no answers for the questions asked, yet these beings answered them. Mary's hypnotherapy work often includes regressing individuals to recall events from missing time and/or alien contact. These beings have assisted in analyzing these contact cases by giving advanced information to the therapist prior to her seeing the clients. Special book to be considered By Randall Sherman I was quite impressed with the first book as I expressed in my first review, This second book is an excellent continuation, in some ways more profound and insightful than the first.I cannot reconcile the high quality of information and the people I have come to know. Steve is the main conduit, but you cannot match the greatness of the information with the individual. He is modest, without any significant credentials, but somehow is able to channel this information and wisdom that seem to be beyond any possible direct experience or learning. Mary of course, does her homework. She organizes questions dealing with the fringe of advanced and theoretical knowledge, even though the follow up questioning are disappointing or lacking.I have watched and participated in a session between them and Han. It is hard not to be skeptical, but when I read the edited versions of answers received, I must agree that this is definitely other-worldly.There are many soothing messages coming forth. For example, if other alien races were to invade and take over the world (read David Jacobs latest book, "Walking Among Us: The Alien Plan to Control Humanity"), or a worldwide nuclear war were started, this would be prevented by the advanced alien races.Yet, there contain many other insights such as spiritual beings which exist separately in light, and it gets deeper as Han discusses ultra-terrestrials, telepathy and the state of omnipresence. I have rarely been so stimulated. It has caused me to re-read the book more than once. I'm not easily film-flamed, but this book will stretch your mind.I truly hope that what Mary and Steve have produced is authentic. For now, I am accepting that it is, and such is a message of hope.

Otherworldly Contact By Vince Migliore Aliens Answer II continues the Q & A sessions with an alien entity that was featured in the first book by Mary Barr and Steve Reichmuth. Once you get over the mind-stretching idea of conversations with an extraterrestrial entity, you can focus on the subject matter of the topics involved. This is where the talent of the therapist excels, as the questions span exactly the mysteries I myself would like answers to. These include hybrids, DNA, angels, physics, dreams, and technology. The exchanges often touch on government cover-up of contact, and the many forms of interaction with other species. Ultimately, the message is one of hope, as it seems humankind is on the brink of a major leap in consciousness. Many thanks for an interesting investigative report.
