The main character, Deihlia, is a person whose bedrock strength and realness is matched only by her charm and magic. We are all, in one way or another, seeking truth, but there is no getting there without first embracing our own authenticity. As I read this book, I came to think of Deihlia as a kind of wild patron saint of authenticity, a character whose very presence vaults others into a new and greater sense of themselves. From family to friends, from college buddies to workmates, Deihlia effortlessly, and with great love and humor, shows other characters in the book how to reach for their own particular stars, how to sync their heartbeat to their dreams and take action in service of profligate possibility.Diane Fraser is a poet, and her work in that genre is evident in this text – a lyric thrum amplifies her direct, clean prose. Fraser’s storytelling will make you want to turn the pages; you will nonetheless find yourself lingering over the richness of her language and the rhythmic intelligence of her prose. I recommend this book for its beauty of expression as well its vivid story of courage, resilience and creativity on all levels: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual. You will come away from Growing Up Superheroes feeling like you had a private audience with a funny, wily, tricksterish master of wisdom and fun; you will come away feeling inducted into the tribe of Deihlia Nye.

Bardi This was an outstanding memoir/bio, and it would make a great gift for teens or adults, especially anyone working through changes in identity or learning about what it means to have a physical disability. Fraser deserves the highest praise for what other reviewers have rightly called a "gift." I'm a psychologist who has worked at a college known for serving people with disabilities (like the one mentioned in the book), and I have read many stories that try too hard to teach or prove something about the challenges that people with disabilities face. The worst examples take a condescending or cheerleading tone about people's accomplishments in adversity, and they bury the lead by failing to capture human uniqueness. Diane Fraser gives us something quite different. Each of the 1 to 5 page stories about Deihlia Nye (the author's niece) are highly vivid glimpses of all aspects of a well-lived life, and as the reader we learn the facts about Deihlia's circumstances, yet the personal and emotional impacts of those facts are brought out through mostly everyday moments and interactions with her friends and family. There is a wonderful parallel that emerges between the author's loving and non-judgmental storytelling about her niece's life and Deihlia's own engaging lack of self-consciousness in her lustful quest to experience every bit of it. After reading the book I wanted to be less judgmental and more active with myself and others. And like Deihlia, I wanted to have more fun (even if it's the sketchy kind), meet more interesting people, and let life take me where it wants to go. I was not surprised to learn that Diane Fraser is a poet. She is expert at communicating the meaning of the smallest moments, and she rarely tells us directly who Deihlia is. You just come to know Deihlia so well, and all too soon, to reach the end of her stories.

When a soul comes into the world with severe physical disabilities and her family is told she won't make it - what can truly happen next and what kind of life can she hope to have if she does survive. Diane Fraser balances the memories of Deihlia's physical struggles, her operations, her life in a wheelchair, with stories of a fabulous and flawed young woman who seemed fearless in the face of obstacles and who possessed a wisdom and generosity of spirit that take many of us a lifetime to master. I found myself understanding Deihlia's world and marveling at her ability to get the most out of every relationship and situation no matter how difficult through Diane's expert writing.As her friends share their stories of the impact Deihlia made in their lives, we can't help but begin to miss her ourselves. Diane has not let her grief pull her under. From her first introduction to her niece she has been faithful in loving this mischievous force of nature and to magically fulfilling her promise to Deihlia to tell her story.Hopefully this book will help others faced with Deihlia's challenges to be pulled forward ... to recognize that although disabilities can shorten the length of a life, they can't touch it's depth and meaning.
