1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun book, again and again. By C Diamond My grandson is almost two years old. I purchased this book for his mother to read to him on an airline flight. It was amazing! He loved discovering everything behind the "doors". The airplane flight was quick, quiet and exciting for him thanks in part to his interest in his new book. Better still, he has enjoyed this book many many times since then. He likes opening the flaps and rediscovering the continuation of the story behind them. It has become a favorite for all of us.

Dallas Willard Center 2016 Book and Research Award Finalist Hearts & Minds Bookstore's Best Books of 2015, Spirituality and the Devotional Life "This is a book written specifically for those of us who are assigned the task of developing an imagination for living the Christian faith with insight and skill in and for a society that is disconnected from the biblical revelation and the Jesus incarnation," writes Eugene Peterson in the foreword of The Cultivated Life. "But it is equally useful for all of us who are committed to following Jesus with our families and coworkers and neighbors." Sociology professor and spiritual director Susan Phillips walks us through the "circus" of our cultural landscape to invite us into a cultivated life of spirituality. If we want to accept the invitation to return to the garden, then we must face down the temptation to live life as spectators of the circus that plays on around us. We want to be rooted and grounded in Christ, but are pushed toward constant work, alternating between performance and spectacle. Cultivation requires a kind of attentiveness that is countercultural to our age of distraction. These pages unfold the spiritual practices that can lead us into a new and delightful way of living. Are you ready to leave the circus?

The Cultivated Life: From Ceaseless Striving to Receiving Joy, by Susan S. Phillips

Review "The book is a helpful resource for an adult education class. The appendix, in particular, is a hands-on resource for the how-to of developing these navigational tools. I could see this book being used at my own church in an eight-week study on Christian practices with the goal of helping folks in my community navigate their way into the garden while living in the circus. Thank you, Susan Phillips, for such a practical and fresh look at ancient practices." (Emily Berman D'Andrea, The Presbyterian Outlook, August 31, 2015)"Susan Phillips, a noted sociologist, not only challenges us to 'leave the circus' of fast-paced mainstream culture, she offers a compelling vision of how we can begin to embody the rich joy and attentiveness of Jesus." (Relevant Magazine, July/August 2015)"Phillips' academic exploration of cultivating Christian spirituality is told through great stories and vivid word pictures of life in a circus versus a garden atmosphere. She concludes each chapter with a reflective study and provides extensive guidelines for practicing contemplative living, Sabbath living, lectio divina, finding a spiritual director, and cultivating friendship." (Donna Watson, CBA Retailers + Resources, July 2015)"We all struggle in the circuslike culture of contemporary society, which often causes difficulties in attention and healthy attachment in the midst of yearning for the spiritual life. Susan Phillips provides us with ways to cultivate the contemplative life by examining spiritual practices within the Christian tradition such as spiritual direction, lectio divina, listening and friendship. I believe the author's use of stories― stories that have emerged from her practice of attentive listening―will affect readers deeply." (Jung Eun Sophia Park, assistant professor of religious studies and philosophy, Holy Names University)"Susan Phillips's The Cultivated Life is a remarkable work on so many levels. Her insightful and sophisticated analysis is able to synthesize both the theoretical and practical in profound and compelling ways. Her skills as a creative theologian and biblical interpreter, a wise and insightful spiritual director, and one grounded in the common-sense particularities and complexities of human experience and history makes her work an extraordinary contribution in so many arenas of pastoral and theological practice. The breadth of her sources and insights―from literature, psychology, philosophy, theology, ecumenical and religious history, and personal history, among others―make this a must-read for scholars, students and practitioners alike. Phillips's style is accessible, engaging and invitational. . . . I recommend Susan Phillips's book with great enthusiasm for all audiences―for all who are searching." (James A. Donahue, president, Saint Mary's College of California)"The Cultivated Life reads like the cool evening breeze at the end of a blazing hot day in the desert. . . . It is also a prophetic clarion call―a warning to a generation trapped in the meaningless rat-race of twenty-first-century existence, suffocated by the demands of addictive consumerism, obsessed with the lifeless toys of modernity, while the breath of heaven who is only a prayer away eagerly waits to share with us the real joys of living. This book is a timely gift to the community of faith to be treasured and shared. More than that, this is essential survival reading for every true pilgrim seeking after the pearl of great price." (Ivan Satyavrata, senior pastor, Assembly of God Church, Kolkata, India)"The Cultivated Life is filled with gifts of a generous, transparent spirit. Reading this insightful book and reflecting on its profound questions invite us to taste the life Susan Phillips lives. . . . When I reached the end of The Cultivated Life I returned to the beginning to soak in the words, insights and prayers that arose. Thank you, Susan, for giving us a glimpse of wholeness by offering gifts of spiritual direction through your writing." (Jeannette A. Bakke, author of Holy Invitations)"Susan Phillips tells great stories and uses vivid word pictures. Her contrast between circus and garden reveals deep truths about the overstimulation in our daily lives and Jesus' invitation to cultivate a restful and focused life rooted in him. Cultivation implies habits and discipline, and Susan winsomely invites us into new patterns of living. A garden implies lush green leaves and fruitful bounty, and Susan guides our paths into joy and rest. Come into the garden with Jesus and journey into abundant life." (Lynne M. Baab, author of The Power of Listening and Sabbath Keeping)"The most basic human question in daily living is not so much 'what?' but 'how?' Just check the magazine covers in the check-out line. Articles promise to tell us how to lose weight, how to get rich, how to be sexy. But what if you've lived enough to know that life is about more than health, wealth and a good time? This is a book for people who are interested in the how of a life that's really life. Would that it could be front-and-center in every check-out line." (Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, author of Strangers at My Door)"Susan Phillips can write this book because she lives it. For three decades and more, I have observed the choices she makes to cultivate life and this has been the hallmark of her story. This book is a deep and magnanimous invitation to live in such a way that the flourishing for which we are made can become our experience. Let the grounded welcome she extends and encourages lead us through the circus towards life itself." (Mark Labberton, president of Fuller Theological Seminary)"Susan S. Phillips has written a beautiful work in The Cultivated Life . She gives many detailed descriptions and options for spiritual practice and discipline that can help in the cultivation of our lives as we seek after God. Cultivating is hard work and it can become monotonous. Her goal in this book is to remove the monotone and give way to a beautiful flourishing canvas of color and life." (Micah Andrew Hasty, Brave Daily, December 1, 2015)"Susan Phillips's book issues a gentle invitation, accessible to all, to run away from the circus and to cultivate our spiritual gardens." (Lynne Baab, Radix 38, no. 4)"This would be a great book for a Lenten study or other adult study or book group, definitely a slow thoughtful read." (Anne Metzler, The Lamplighter)

Baab Ten years ago, Susan Phillips wrote an article for an academic journal called Transformation. The article was entitled “Garden or Circus: Christian care in the face of contemporary pressures.” I used her metaphors of garden and circus in my 2007 Ph.D. thesis on congregational websites. What I wrote then relates well to her wonderful new book, The Cultivated Life:“Phillips uses the metaphors of garden and circus to describe the opportunities and challenges facing Christian congregations today. She writes that the Bible portrays the place where God’s people dwell as a garden, rich in growth and full of fruitfulness and life. In contrast, she suggests that most Christians live their lives more like a circus with multiple acts vying for attention under the big top, and she asserts that most congregations foster this atmosphere of frenzied activity. Heightened levels of attention are necessary in order to cope with the overstimulation that arises from so many circus acts happening at the same time. Absent is the sense of resting in a fruitful (and peaceful) garden.”I have pondered Susan’s metaphors of garden and circus many times since then, finding those word pictures helpful in evaluating patterns in my own life. I am delighted Susan has developed the two metaphors further in this book. She helps us discern the aspects of a three-ring circus that characterize our lives, but more importantly, she lays out models and practices that can help us live like fruitful plants in a verdant garden. The topics she discusses include refreshment, listening, stopping, Sabbath, paying attention, praying with scripture, spiritual direction and friendship. Susan tells great stories from her own life and the lives of others. She draws on helpful scriptures, and her wisdom about life in the garden is accessible and lovely. I love the power of the metaphors she has chosen, and I love the way she unpacks, describes and illustrates them.

Rarely has a book had such an impact on me personally and in my secular professions of piano teacher and psychotherapist. Though Christianity provides the backdrop of this book, it is more than a religious polemic but a universal blueprint for living the life the divine would have had us live, if the divine in fact created us. Dr.Phillips passionately and beautifully leads us to consider how, despite the circus environment, we can all practice the spiritual life, an ethical life of integrity, compassion, respect. Her chapter on friendship is a revelation on the essential and universal qualities that bind us to each other.

Practices for Becoming Fully Alive By Diane Deutsch The 14thC poet, Lal Ded says, “To Learn the Scriptures is easy, to live them, is hard.” How do we live now? Greek and Judeo/Christian streams flow into Western hearts and minds to answer this question of living the Scriptures. In her wonderful book, The Cultivated Life, Dr. Susan Phillips directs us to discover the rich roots of the Judeo/Christian traditions ancient sources of wisdom for structuring life within practices and disciplines that transform and penetrate the forces of inattention and attachment anxieties that restrict and restrain our becoming fully alive. I especially appreciated that she not only focused on spiritual disciplines of prayer and the interior life but she also turns her attention to relationships, both friendships and Spiritual Direction, practices Dr. Phillips describes as relational disciplines. For, according to Phillips, the cultivated life needs to be fed from wells of feeling, intuition and imagination in addition to the intellect, wells found flowing in the intimacy of relationships. She challenges us to bring friendship into the larger space of prayer and moral reflection where its nurture and correction can take place. She says that our souls can be stretched, nourished and cleansed in friendship. How nurturing to see how friendship is a way of living the Scriptures!

Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence has literally changed my life. Reviewing religious books is as subjective as it gets because whether or not a book has meaning depends (1) not only on where one is on one's spiritual journey but also on (2) one's religious views--a volatile proposition. The book was written over three hundred years ago and has amazing relevance. For me, reading this book actually gave me a feeling of God's presence! Brother Lawrence proposes that experiencing God's presence is the purpose and end all of worship. He is very self-efacing and has an odd preference for suffering, but, there is nonetheless much wisdom in it. It brings up the idea that one's relationship with God is the ultimate goal, nothing else. The idea that one can feel that presence in every waking moment (Brother Lawrence clearly did). The idea that one should pray for God's will instead of for the "things" one wants. Clearly Brother Lawrence put God first in everything, and, in return, he had a companion in life. When things were not going well for Brother Lawrence he gave thanks to God for the lesson he was being taught. It is far different than the modern way of looking at things and adds a new dimension to one's spirituality. Reading the book, I felt as if I was with Brother Lawrence, transported back in time three hundred years.I am more of the mindset that everything should go my way and I should have everything I want (and God is supposed to provide that for me), so it was all food for thought. Definitely not in the "Think and Grow Rich" or "The Secret" line, of which there is plenty to be found in corporate, materialistic America and which has something to contribute as well. But there is something profound and unique in experiencing God's presence regardless of what is happening in one's life. It is difficult to put into words - read the book. Anyone can take something away from it.As for the version, I have the free internet version and nothing to compare it to. Google "Brother Lawrence Practicing the Presence of God" and you'll find it.

He is very wise and easy to understand! This is a book that you will want to keep and read it again and again. He is very inspiring. What I cannot understand is why is this man not a Saint?

Patrick, a young leprechaun, liked the red of the beach ball in his basket of balls and the roses outside his window. He liked the blue of the sky and the boat he sailed in the bathtub. He liked oranges to eat and the orange of his schoolbooks. He liked purple grapes and purple snakes and purple fish. Yes, he liked all the colors of the rainbow, but most of all he loved YELLOW! This love causes him to follow the rainbow to its end in hopes of finding the pot of gold -- the finest yellow of all. But, what he found was far better than any gold! *Over 25 delightful illustrations. *Wonderful message for every child. *If you like the books of Dr. Seuss, Mo Willems, Sandra Boynton, the Berenstains, Suzy Spafford, Felicia Bond, Laura Numeroff, and P.D. Eastman, you will love THE LITTLE LEPRECHAUN WHO LOVED YELLOW!

The Little Leprechaun book teaches an invaluable lesson for all children--that they should follow their instincts and their passions, even when both may be at odds with conventional thinking. This is an excellent lesson for kids of all ages. In reading (and rereading) this book, even young children will learn to trust themselves, follow their hearts, and stand up for their passions. A welcome addition to this series of multicultural books for children.

I love how it teaches all children that its ok to have a favorite color, but there are alot of colors out there too. My grandson loves green, so this book was right up his alley. Letting him see that all colors are beautiful too. I love how his mom made his outfit his favorite yellow color. Made me tear up! Thank you for another amazing story to share with my grandchildren!

By shutterbug I have used these Amy Knapp Organizers for years...Love them! This is the perfect size to fit in my purse and carry around with me. The size of a hardback book.I use the daily calendars more than the monthly one. There is plenty of room to write on each day, a section for notes, grocery lists and menus (I use the menu section which is right along side the dates, as a to-do list for that day/week, instead of menus). There is also a Prayer & Praise section to write in. I use this to keep my "gratitude list"/ things I'm thankful for. There are 2 pages of stickers, although I prefer the old stickers she had a few years back. These stickers are bigger and brighter, but there aren't as many different kinds of stickers. I add a mini manilla envelope to the inside of the front cover, to store loose papers, coupons etc., and I use binder clips to keep my place, although there are perforations on the pages to tear out the grocery/menu lists, which can help with place keeping, but I don't like to tear mine up.I've kept every one of my day planners for the last 12 years and I refer back to them at times for a date or note I wrote, sometimes using them as a simi journal or diary, keeps my life all in one place.

However, I was looking for the 7 hole version. This one is spiral bound and for the life of me I cannot see where it tells that in the description. Not really a problem as it's still a very efficient/useful organizer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I LOVE this organizer By Just my 2 cents I LOVE this organizer. It has a monthly calendar and a weekly calendar. Makes it easy to keep up with everything with plenty of space to write on. It's also a nice size to fit in your purse or bag. I previously used one of her family organizers when all my children were still at home. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. I like that this one has the scripture references and a place for prayers and praise. The grocery lists can be torn out easily and taken to the store on a weekly basis. The only thing that would make this better for me would be if it had tabs for each month. I just made my own and it works great.
