The Mormon Church is a high-demand group that exerts control over its members' Behavior, Information, Thoughts, and Emotions to create a cycle of psychological dependency. This BITE Model (developed by cult exit counselor Steven Hassan) describes how cults and totalist groups employ coercive persuasion that inflicts deep psychological scars. This short ebook supplements Luna Lindsey's "Recovering Agency" and reveals further how certain LDS doctrines, culture, and policies fit the BITE Model. These unhealthy pressures stifle free agency and keep members trapped within their Church. The BITE Model and Mormon Control looks at this same information through a different angle, and can either be read standalone, or both books can be read together for deeper understanding. Whether you are recovering from Mormonism or another totalist religion, or interested in real-life examples of group power dynamics to protect yourself from manipulation, or whether you are merely curious, this book will be a quick and fascinating exploration of the LDS inner-life. Turn the pages and learn the answers to longstanding questions about this unique American religion and about the human mind.

This book should be read for its content rather than its tone or quality of writing. The Mormon Church has often been compared to Scientology, and this book clearly shows why that comparison has some merit. It is understandable why someone would be angry (very angry) if subjected to these control tactics.

By Rick A great summary of the mind control methods used in high-demand groups and how they relate to the LDS (Mormon) Church. There are quite a few spelling and grammatical errors, otherwise I would give it 5 Stars.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. and although I enjoyed reading the book By Michael This book is skewed a little bit to the meanish side. Ms. Lindsey writes as if there is a thread of hostility toward LDS men, and although I enjoyed reading the book, I had to take it in sips rather that slamming through it- take a rest once in a while. But I think the book, especially for the price, is worth a read. I agree with most of what Ms. Lindsey has to say, but not much here in the form of originality. A lot of sawing on saw dust.

The most checked-out book in the Hogwarts Library, and a volume no Quidditch player or Harry Potter fan should be without! If you have ever asked yourself where the Golden Snitch came from, how the Bludgers came into existence, or why the Wigtown Wanderers have pictures of meat cleavers on their robes, you need QUIDDITCH THROUGH THE AGES. This invaluable volume is consulted by young Quidditch fans on an almost daily basis.Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to Comic Relief, who will use your money to continue improving and changing lives -- work that is even more important and astonishing than the three-and-a-half-second capture of the Golden Snitch by Roderick Plumpton in 1921.-- Albus Dumbledore

Quidditch Through the Ages (Harry Potter), by Kennilworthy Whisp

From School Library Journal Grade 4-8-These slim paperbacks are made to look like actual Hogwarts tomes, complete with creased covers and plenty of marginalia scribbled by Harry and other students. Fabulous Beasts, a facsimile of Harry Potter's very own textbook, contains descriptions of 75 magical beasts, written in a wonderfully dry yet droll style by a renowned magizoologist. Quidditch is the facsimile of a Hogwarts library book, which had to be literally pried from the hands of librarian Madam Pince. It gives a comprehensive history of the game and its rules, as well as a rundown of each of the 13 league teams of Britain and Ireland. Harry Potter fans who pride themselves on knowing every minute bit of Hogwarts trivia will devour both books. From Professor Dumbledore's introductions to the price listed on the back cover (14 Sickles 3 Knuts), readers will find a wealth of detailed magical lore and laugh-out-loud humor. Neither book is as gripping as the actual series, of course, but fans who are waiting for the fifth installment will be entertained by these volumes in the meantime.Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Reviewed with J. K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts.

Gr. 4-7. Because this is a "Harry Potterless" year, kids in need of a fix may find it in these two volumes. The conceit is that these are Harry's schoolbooks (Fantastic Beasts, by Newt Scamander; Quidditch, by Kennilworthy Whisp), with margin notes by Harry and pal Ron Weasley. The concept breaks down in the introductions: Professor Dumbledore explains that the books are being offered to muggles (because the proceeds of the books are going to British charity Comic Relief, a disclosure that will raise the eyebrows of any reader who undestands the importance of secrecy in the wizard world. Nevertheless, a lot of effort has gone into making these seem like real textbooks. The jackets look torn and faded, the print is (annoyingly) small, and the information is well detailed. Illustrations are in short supply, and not every fan will want to know this much about Quidditch and imaginary beasts, especially when the text is so hard to read. Buy several copies (the money really does go to charity), but expect a few disappointed readers. Ilene CooperCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Funny, likely prized by serious Harry Potter fans By A Customer Summary:The book was published as a charitable publication; all of the proceeds are supposed to go to a charitable organization with the writing and publication costs being taken care of by donations. As for the contents, the book covers the history and rules of Quidditch and talks about some of the professional teams in Great Britain. My Comments:First, the book is quite funny, with numerous humorous notes and stories. It is more reminiscent of Rowlings earlier Harry Potter novels than it is of numbers 4 and 5 that do have some funny elements but tend to be much more serious than the first three. The book is also probably highly prized by Harry Potter fanatics because it further develops the already incredibly detailed magical/muggle world of the series. Rowling has accomplished something few other authors can claim - the creation of a credible world - and this is just another doorway into that world. The only problem I could possibly see with this book is that it is hardly long enough to be called a book; it is more a monograph or pamphlet with its roughly 50 pages. Granted this is a fictitious history which means every detail and story has to be developed from scratch. What's more, it has to be incorporated into the existing stories and future stories. Nevertheless, this can only be described as a 'brief' history of Quidditch.Overall, you can read the entire thing in about 30 minutes and if you are a die hard Harry Potter fan you'll probably appreciate it and find it disappointingly short. If not, it won't likely keep your interest like the novels will. I'd recommend it for die hard fans but be aware that it is short.

Rowling is a great book to read if you like the Harry Potter books and the sport Quidditch als from those books. This book guides you from the beggining of Quidditch until the present of what Quidditch is now.The book is focused only on Quidditch,it talks about the many teams from England and many other countries as well. It also talks about where the bludgers came into existence, and why the teams have certain logos on their uniforms. The book mentions amazing events and things that have happened in historic matches. Also it talks on how rules have changed through time. There are many other features that this book includes,I hope you like it as much as I did.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Quidditch Through the Ages By Theatre Kidd Quidditch Through the Ages is a sort of addition to the Harry Potter series. If you've read the Harry Potter books, you probably remember the characters talking about what a wonderful, exciting and informative book it is.I kind of expected it to be longer, but I suppose that you can't get everything you want... all in all, for an additional book I thought that it was pretty okay. The best things about it were the little comments and tid bits that made it really seem like a book from the Hogwarts library.... the card in the front that has the names of all the kids that checked it out, the introduction from Dumbledore, and the conversion from dollars to sickles and knuts on the back are all really cool.If you're a Harry Potter fan, you have to get this, if just to ease your curiosity on what it's about. But beware- this book has no plot and reads pretty darn boring, except for a few select parts. It clears up quite a bit of the fourth book's Quidditch Cup, and if there are any more matches in future books, I suggest keeping this close at hand. This is rated G, and is really really tame. The fifth book was kind of crazy, what with the teen angst and such, but this takes you back to the happy, carefree world of Harry Potter.

Where's the Baboon?, by Michaël Escoffier

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—As three white mice follow a sign to school, they invite readers to "search for hidden words!" A series of questions are asked, and the answers are hidden in the final work with visual clues; putting the letters that appear in a different color and font size together provides the solution. For example, a pig holding a paintbrush in front of a splattered canvas is the artist who "made this painting." The word painting is presented in black, but the letters P, I, and G are slightly larger and in red. Animals filled with personality cavort and play across the well-composed pages. A muted palette enhances the humor and invites readers to closely examine the affable pictures, which also hold the answers hidden in the words. The only one missing appears in the final chaotic, joyful spread: "baBOOn!" VERDICT This fresh and festive book encourages not only wordplay but careful examination of illustration sure to please readers of any age.—Maria B. Salvadore, formerly at District of Columbia Public Library

Review "Kids will enjoy searching for answers in both words and pictures, not to mention the surprise at the story’s end. The muted colors of Di Giacomo’s illustrations complement each scene’s subtle humor (a seagull reading Jonathan Livingston, for instance), and all works together beautifully to unify language, picture, and story." -- STARRED REVIEW, Booklist“As the cover art teases, this is both a game and a riddle book, with clever illustrations providing clues . . . In a word: outstanding.” – STARRED REVIEW, Kirkus Reviews“Call it what you like, but Esoffier and Di Giacomo appear to have another hit on their hands . . . Wordplay and fun—what’s not to like?” – Book Page“Escoffier and Di Giacomo keep up the wordplay in this fun companion to 2014’s Take Away the A, which invites readers to find the names of animals hidden within various words . . .Di Giacomo’s rough-hewn illustrations place the action in a rowdy school, with plenty of funny encounters to keep kids giggling.” – Publishers Weekly"...the creative duo of Michaël Escoffier and Kris Di Giacomo returns with a magnificent seek-and-find caper that plays as much with words as with pictures."––The Wall Street Journal"Animals filled with personality cavort and play across the well-composed pages. A muted palette enhances the humor and invites readers to closely examine the affable pictures. . . . This fresh and festive book encourages not only wordplay but careful examination of illustration sure to please readers of any age."—School Library Journal

Rather than a story- per se each page has a scene and a question. For example, "Who made this painting?" and you see a bunch of animals holding dripping brushes next to an art easel. You could take a guess that since the pig is the one closest to the easel, perhaps it was him. The answer is found by looking at the actual text of the question- you'll see that within the word "painting" the p, i, and g are all in red and the rest of the letters are in black. Ta-da! It was the pig! This can be a fun game for children- both by using visual context clues to figure out the answer and then by working to use the red letters to spell out the name of the animal. The illustrations are whimsical and fun and the animals are so happy!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute and clever By D. Jennings This is a really cute idea....use the clues to find the words (in proper order) hidden within larger words. Early readers will enjoy the game, and the goofy animals as well. Since there's no "look inside" button for this book, I'll include some photos.I think that publishers are inclined to label all picture books for "ages four to eight", but I wouldn't be surprised if many 7- and 8-yr-olds are beyond this. Best for ages 5-6 or younger kids who are reading already. The only thing I'd change about this book is the colors. the illustrations are adorable but they're done in very muted shades of grey, brown, beige, dusty salmon and dusty teal, and the edges of the pictures are, I suppose, "antiqued"... colored as if they were soiled. I understand that this is stylized work but bright, crisp illustration might be better to get the attention of young children.

Things are going pretty well for seventeen-year-old Joel Suzuki. He doesn’t have a girlfriend yet, but he does have a band, a record deal, and some really cool memories of saving a faraway place called Spectraland a little over six months ago. But then his old friend Fireflower shows up at one of Joel’s concerts and asks for his assistance. Apparently, things are not going quite as well back in Spectraland as they are on Earth. Joel agrees to help. But soon after he arrives in Spectraland, the situation takes a turn for the worse: the tropical island’s majestic twin moons suddenly burst into flames, and Wavemakers—the people with the power to create magic through music, of which Joel is one—begin to go missing. Now Joel must solve the mystery of who is behind these malevolent misdeeds before he falls victim to them as well. Could it be the Silencers, a group of angry individuals who are opposed to the Wavemakers’ very existence? Or perhaps another, even more sinister force that no one—including Joel—is expecting…

By Gavin Bollard The Mystery of the Moonfire is a young adult fantasy adventure which feels to me to lie closer to the enchanted wood (or perhaps 1980s style Doctor Who) in terms of characters, than Harry Potter. It's full of strange animals and adventure and danger... and it's peppered with pop culture references.Apart from the fantasy creatures and green-skinned people, the main fantasy elements revolve around the use of "wavebows" instead of wands to create music-based magic. This is very appropriate since the author, Brian Tashima is a musician. The other thing that sets this book apart from the rest is that it contains a main character with Asperger's syndrome. This doesn't get in the way of the story but it does give readers with Asperger's a "quirky" hero that they can relate to.The only thing that I would suggest is that you make sure that you've read the first book (Secret of the Songshell) before trying to read this one as characters and events from the first book are referenced throughout without an introduction for new readers.

By Karen My husband, 16-year-old son and I all have different tastes when it comes to reading fiction, so we were pleasantly surprised at how much we all enjoyed reading Brian Tashima’s first YA sci-fi fantasy book, Secret of the Songshell. There was enough humor, fantasy, sci-fi and mystery for each of us.When Mystery of the Moonfire came out in late 2015, it had been a couple of years since I had read the first book but I was hooked by the end of the first chapter. Although Mystery of the Moonfire can be read on its own as a standalone story, I do recommend reading Secret of the Songshell first so you can become more connected with the Spectraland fantasy world and the main characters. In Book Two, I was pleased to see that the main characters, Joel and Felicity have deeper character development and have strengthened their relationship with one another. I do hope The Spectraland Saga books eventually catch the eye of a Hollywood producer because Brian’s magical world would be amazing on the big screen. If you follow Brian Tashima’s blog at Spectralandsaga.com or have read any of his author interviews, you will know that the lead characters in his book are teenagers on the autism spectrum. As an Autistic/Aspie adult parenting two sons on the autism spectrum, it’s important to me that any fiction novel I read that has autistic characters comes off as authentic and respectful even if autism isn’t the primary theme. Brian’s book is very positive in this respect. What I like about Joel and Felicity is that even though they are fictional characters, they seem like kids I would have been friends with if I had met them in school. Felicity is a risk-taking sassy, witty tomboy living life with the volume dial turned on high. Joel is loyal, kind and socially awkward yet he is willing to step outside his comfort zone to pursue a passion (rock music) or save the world. If you’re looking for a well-known author to compare Brian to regarding writing style and demographic appeal, I would say J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter) or Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson). This book should appeal to teens and adults on and off the spectrum who have a dry sense of humor and enjoy sci-fi fantasy fiction.

By Kyelzbub Really enjoyed the continuation of this story from the first book in the series. I was hooked from the beginning and had a hard time putting this book down. I read in bed at night to help settle down. Typically I read for a bit and then go to bed. While reading this book I was typically waking up with a book resting on my face because I didn't want to put it down. This is a great book for teens and adults as well. Especially for anyone who wants to get an idea of what it is to be on the spectrum. The author does a great job of describing, through the hero Joel, what it is to live with Aspberger's.So impressed with how the story is told in a manner where Joel's Aspberger's is not treated as an affliction, but as a super power. Not only is this character a great hero in general, but also such a hero for anyone that lives on the spectrum.

When thirteen-year-old Ronan Truelove’s seemingly ordinary mom snatches him from school, then sets off on a high speed car chase, Ronan is shocked. His quiet, nerdy dad has been kidnapped? And the kidnappers are after him, too?

His mom, he quickly learns, is anything but ordinary. In fact, she’s a member of an ancient order of knights, the Blood Guard, a sword-wielding secret society sworn to protect the Pure—thirty-six noble souls whose safety is crucial if the world as we know it is to survive.

Now all those after-school activities—gymnastics, judo, survival training—she made him take, make sense. For suddenly Ronan is swept up in a sometimes funny, sometimes scary, but always thrilling adventure—dashing from one danger to the next, using his wits to escape the Bend Sinister, a posse of evil doers with strange powers. Falling in with two unlikely companions, Greta, a scrappy, strong-willed girl he’s never much liked and Jack, a devil-may-care teenage pickpocket, Ronan is left with only his wits and his mom’s last words of advice: Trust no one.

That’s a lot for an ordinary kid to deal with. But then again, maybe Ronan’s not ordinary at all.

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—Ronan Truelove (please don't use his given name, Evelyn!) would like to believe he is a typical 13-year-old. But most 13-year-olds are not trained in krav maga, trapeze, and fencing. When bad guys show up, Ronan's mother reveals that she is a member of the Blood Guard, and instructs Ronan to board a specific train and trust no one. The action and humor never flag as Ronan locates gently sarcastic Jack Dawson, joins up with lockpicker/firearms expert Greta, and tries to stay alive as they make their way to safety in Washington, DC. The ending clearly indicates more books to come. Nick Podehl's fabulous narration will keep listeners on the edge of their seats. His accents and pitches bring the characters to life, from spunky Greta to threatening adults and Dawson's wry "English bloke" tone to nervous foster kid Sammy. With an action-packed story line, diverse and non-stereotypical characters, frequent humor, and Podehl's captivating accents, this book is easy to recommend for any public or school library with an audiobook collection.—Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley School, Fort Worth, TX

From Booklist When Ronan Truelove’s mother reveals that she is a member of the Blood Guard, a secret society of warriors charged with protecting 36 pure souls who prevent the apocalypse, he is thrust into a world of danger and intrigue. Assisted by opinionated but competent Greta and young guard member Jack, Ronan must try to get to safety as the forces of evil close in. Roy’s first book hits the ground running and doesn’t let up until the end, and his writing is up to the job. His cinematic fight scenes are clearly written, which is deeply important for a book filled with action. While balancing that, he also pays ample attention to his characters, giving each one time to tell his or her history without slowing down the overall pace. One major revelation at the end is telegraphed a bit too early, but by that point, readers won’t care. They’ll just be eager to know how Ronan’s exciting journey will end and be left longing for the next installment. Grades 4-7. --Snow Wildsmith

Review          “Roy’s first novel is the humorous and exciting start of a new trilogy.” —Kirkus Reviews “Roy’s first book hits the ground running and doesn’t let up until the end, and his writing is up to the job.” —Booklist“Breathless action, witty dialogue, and unabashed fun…” —Publishers Weekly“This is an adventurous tale with a bit of magic and mystery that will thrill middle grade readers.” —The Parkersburg News and Sentinel “THE BLOOD GUARD sure gets off to a great start.” —Common Sense Media“This is an action-packed book you never want to put down..” —Denver Post“This action packed thrill ride will hold the interest of readers young and old to the very last page.” —Monsters and Critics“Hits the ground running and doesn’t let up until it’s dragged you, gasping and astonished and delighted, over the finish line. Bound to get any kid who owns a flashlight in big trouble for reading under the covers well past bedtime.” —Bruce Coville, author of Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher and My Teacher Is an Alien “Wildly intense and deviously funny, The Blood Guard has real heart as well as characters you’ll fall in love with. This is cool stuff, very cool stuff.” —Michael Grant, New York Times bestselling author of BZRK and the Gone series “Packed with breathless adventure, sword fighting, heartless betrayal, and car chases – but what I loved best about this book is that amidst all the fun it’s also pure of heart. I enjoyed The Blood Guard tremendously and cannot wait to read the sequel!” —Sarah Prineas, author of the Magic Thief series “The kind of witty, fleet-footed, swashbuckling adventure my twelve-year-old self would have gobbled up. Sure to be a hit with middle-grade adventure fans!” —Bruce Hale, author of the Chet Gecko Mysteries and A School for S.P.I.E.S.: Playing with Fire “I love everything about this thrilling novel—its humor, its action, and especially Greta Sustermann. She is smart, sassy, vulnerable, and completely kicks butt. I can't wait to read the next book.” —Kathryn Littlewood, author of Bliss and A Dash of Magic

The characters are engaging and are often in fish-out-of-water situations. There is magic, evil and purposeful quest throughout the book. It is very easy to read this book in one sitting. What makes this book suitable for middle school and YA readers? Clean, non-complex plot lines, charming characters, youthful protagonists and lots of action. There are good adults and bad, loving parents and neglectful. This book is a cheerful page turner for anyone, any age who likes action and plot. I found it well written. The author has a nice ear for dialogue. Even though this is part of a series, I felt the book did a nice job of standing alone as a work.

As soon as I opened this package and saw this fantastic cover, I knew that Blood Guard was a book for my 12 year old son, Damian. And I was right, he LOVED it! So much so that he’s already loaned it to his friend to read and he's recommended it to his middle school librarian as something he’d like to see on the NC Battle of the Books list next year. He was a little unsure about how to put together a review so I made him a kind of worksheet or template with questions for him to answer. He did a great job! Also, Any book that can inspire THIS kind of enthusiastic reaction from my son deserves nothing less than a 5 star rating and the highest recommendation from me!Damian’s review:Blood Guard was wicked cool! It was full of action and adventure and plenty of surprises. The main characters were Ronan, Greta, and Dawkins. My favorite character was Dawkins because if you killed him, he would come back to life! How awesome is that? Ronan wants to become a Blood Guard so that he can help to protect the Pures but he has a hard time becoming part of that society. The Pures were special people who were super important to the world or could trigger major events. The bad guys were trying to get rid of the Pures. They had this thing they could look through and tell if someone was Pure. The Blood Guards had something like that too so they knew who to protect. I was so mad at the bad guys but I can’t say why because it would be a spoiler.I can’t think of any other books, TV shows, or movies that was anything like this. That’s one of the reasons I loved it so much, it wasn’t like anything else! The fantasy world is pretty much like our world but with a lot of things that our world don’t have. I wouldn’t want to live there but I wish I could have been there when the Blood Guard infiltrated the enemy base! I would have fought right beside them to protect the Pures!I would definitely recommend Blood Guard to other people. This book was so good, I couldn’t put it down! I read it EVERYWHERE. I read it at home. I read it at school. I read it between classes while walking through the halls (and even ran into people or walls once or twice). I read it on the school bus, at breakfast and at lunch. I took this book with me everywhere I went until I finally finished it.If I could say one thing to the author, I would say send me the next book already!! If I could say one thing to a parent thinking about buying this book I would say to get it. If your kid likes adventure and excitement, your kid will love Blood Guard! I keep trying to tell my mom to read it because I think she would like it too.

It's about a boy who's mother is a member of the Blood Guard and gets captured, and he and his friends he meets along the way have to go and rescue her. And he needs to figure out the mystery of his missing dad. The only thing I didn't really like is it left off as a cliffhanger. But overall, it was pretty good.
