This trilogy is the most readable and comprehensive account on the subject of Riemann Hypothesis By Martijn13Maart1970 I have read a lot of the existing 'popular' books on the subject of the Riemann Hypothesis (RH) and these three books by Matthew Watkins provide the most complete picture. By this I mean you get all the facts, history and current research on RH that other books also provide, but this trilogy goes deeper, yet in such a way that it remains readable. The subject of RH is in fact very deep and probably only really understandable for the few specialist mathematicians that work with it daily, but still, it also touches on the fundamental and seemingly simple subject of the link between addition and multiplication. We all know what addition is, and multiplication - or don't we really? Since this is the key to a real understanding of RH, the link between addition and multiplication is extensively elaborated, up the point of metaphysics. The conclusion is startling after all - when you start with the natural numbers, you stumble onto the seemingly simple prime numbers, and eventually in our voyage of discovery of how these primes are divided along the natural number line, we see there is an underlying grand scheme that (might, provide RH is true) goes beyond our wildest dream. But the question is, what was there first, our 'primitive' counting, or this vast structure?I highly recommend reading all three books, since these books go beyond the subject of RH itself, and explains why mathematics and numbers are part of our existence.

Her birthday is coming, and she only has One True Desire (a pet giraffe), but four major obstacles stand in her way, namely her mother (a judge), father (a businessman), uncle (a politican), and grandmother (a strict disciplinarian). She gives each member of her biracial family an individualized presentation including visuals and supporting material, but each one says no and critiques her presentation as being too wordy. In a last ditch attempt, Sophia does a group presentation of one word ("Please!"), accompanied by a compelling pair of pleading eyes. This effort garners (surprise!) success, so she follows it up with two equally important words—"Thank you!" Averbeck's text is a fun take on kindergarten meets the board of directors. Kids will get it even if they don't understand a few of the words (effusive, loquacious, verbose). Ismail's watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations are childlike in the best possible way—featuring bold colors and faces showing great expressions, Sophia's drawings, a pooping giraffe, and just the right amount of detail. They are a perfect complement to the text. VERDICT An amusing story to which kids and adults can relate. Beyond the initial title of the book, the actual story is fantastic! The author uses the Sophia character to thoughtfully and linguistically challenge readers to think critically in how it is they ask for gifts. Between the characters of color, the use of language to expose young readers to more challenging words, and the simplistic underlying message, I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

Humor that, like the best of Pixar, works for both kids and adults. Bright, cheerful art that is sophisticated and child friendly.As an educator I can also recommend this book as a tool for teaching persuasive writing, to folks of all ages.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A lost opportunity By hollyhock I wanted to like this book, but the underlying message isn't one that I can recommend. The story centers on a young girl who really wants a giraffe for her birthday. She has to convince the adults in her family that a giraffe is a good gift. After a series of logical but unsuccessful arguments that attempt to appeal to each adult's personality, she persuades her family to give in by looking pretty and saying "please". Although I agree that politeness is important, "please" is not a magic word for a child to get whatever they want. Shouldn't we be encouraging children to develop well-reasoned arguments? It isn't helpful to teach young girls that they just need to be polite, quiet, and pretty in order to get what they want. In addition, the adults do not model the politeness they expect from their child. Instead of using "please" themselves, they make simple demands for the girl to "use less words."

I've always been a dinosaur lover but had no idea their reign as kings of the Earth, sea and sky was so long...over 180,000,000 years is most impressive!Being a children's book it's a quick read and parents will get enjoyment out of reading it to their kids.The color photos look awesome. First one threw me off because it looks a lot like a Tyrannosaurus but I read the caption and it's a Tarbosaurus. Never heard of that one before now so thanks for teaching me something new. It's my belief that each day I learn something new is a great day regardless of what else happened that day.Also, I'd always just thought of fossils as solidified bones. Didn't know there were 2 types. When you start talking about anatomy the backdrop on the photo is breathtaking. a Tyrannosaurus with a tropical landscape in the near ground and ice-capped mountains in the background. What would it have been like to be alive to see them? I can only dream. I'd definitely visit Jurassic Park!Whoa...that Triceratops/Stegosaurus hybrid is a must see!Excellent book and in spite of my fascination with dinosaurs since I was a little boy this book taught me things. Pick up this book to learn and enjoy dinosaurs.
