By Readatthespeedofdiesel This is a really good collection of short stories from some amazing authors. I like the concept of fiction and devotion. Short enough to read one a day, and they're each really well done. Recommended

Heartwarming fiction that demonstrates God's love By Frances Judge Kathy Ide combines heartwarming fiction with devotionals that bring a personal meaning to each story. These beautifully written stories, written by talented authors, touched my heart. I loved the depth of the characters—spanning from a homeless young girl to a faith-filled old man. The life applications helped me to relate the struggles each character went through to my own life. The stories demonstrate God’s love and grace. I enjoyed being able to finish a story a day on my lunch break and look forward to getting the next book in the series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Everyday Grace By Tawn O'Connor I enjoyed this fiction lover’s devotional, which I received in a bag of "Summer of Fun & Faith" prizes in a drawing. In these 21 stories, eternal truths are illuminated: No one is beyond the reach of God’s grace, and forgiveness is a huge part of His grace that we receive and extend to others. A pirate wracked by guilt finds that confession is the beginning of healing. A widow discovers that it takes humility to receive a blessing from an unexpected source. A homeless child yearns for a home—with pillows. A teenager believes her adoptive parents will reject her, and runs away. A devout husband and wife suffer estrangement from their families. In a short story, every word must count. In “Through a Dark Glass” by Cindy Woodsmall, a husband comforts his wife as she grieves over her exclusion from her sister’s wedding. As the wife reflects on the costs of following God’s leading, and her own missteps along the way, she realizes: “It didn’t matter who was more wrong. God’s grace covered them all.” The simple word “more” expresses the Scriptural truth that God gives grace to the humble. These stories take place in settings that include a slave auction and a conversation in heaven, but also in bars and diners, dark alleys, dusty roads, and shadowed rooms—the places in which we conduct our everyday lives, and need to encounter the every-day grace and forgiveness of God. Each story is followed by a Life Application and a short author biography. Because I am a bookbinder, I must note that this high-quality, hardcover gift book is sewn in sections, not merely glued, and the attractive cover design is embossed. The final story’s Life Application sums up the overarching theme: “God’s forgiveness is waiting. It always has been. Go to Him, fall at His feet, and soak up His grace. And then turn around and pass on His mercy to others.”

Indwelling Sin in Believers, by John Owen

About the Author John Owen was born in 1616 in Stadhampton, Oxfordshire and died in Ealing, West London, in 1683. During his sixty-seven years he lived out a life full of spiritual experience, literary accomplishment, and national influence so beyond most of his peers that he continues to merit the accolade of 'the greatest British theologian of all time.' Despite his other achievements, Owen is best famed for his writings. These cover the range of doctrinal, ecclesiastical and practical subjects. They are characterized by profundity, thoroughness and, consequently, authority. Andrew Thomson said that Owen 'makes you feel when he has reached the end of his subject, that he has also exhausted it.' Although many of his works were called forth by the particular needs of his own day they all have a uniform quality of timelessness. The Banner of Truth Trust has reprinted his Works in twenty-three volumes.

Owen's knew his subject extremely well. It's so sad to see what kind of shape the evangelical church is in when one views so much of the nonsense on today's "Christian" TV. This book, read and acted upon would correct so much that is wrong with the Church today. The problem is SIN and Owens hits it dead on.

I only wished that I had read it years ago. I would have been able to understand what Paul wrote, Why do I do the things I don't want to do? It explains the indwelling sin that we fight each day of our life and with Christ, how to keep it at odds with our Christianity and desire to obey.John Owen's books are awesome!Don't miss this one!

Positive By Elena Gerard You wouldn't think so from the title but this Puritan writing is very revealing of human nature and at the same time very informative as a way to deal with sin in a most positive way. It actually gives insight for daily living.

A beautiful exploration of happiness and hope Nino doesn't have a dog, but he likes to imagine that he does. His imaginary dog chases squirrels and plays in the lake with him. His imaginary dog licks the tears off Nino's face and helps Nino feel less lonely while his dad is traveling. But when Nino gets a real dog, it's not quite what he expected. As he spends more time with his dog, though, Nino learns how to be content with what he has, but that doesn't stop him from continuing to dream. This award-winning book beautifully depicts the art of finding a balance between imagination and reality.

The Dog That Nino Didn't Have, by Edward van de Vendel

Review Kirkus Reviews “A sensitive reminder that imagination can provide comfort, though not in unlimited quantity.”Publishers Weekly(Starred Review) “Through playful negatives and sumptuous illustrations van de Vendel and Van Hertbruggen suggest that imagination can fill the void where melancholy and longing live, coexisting with realities beyond one’s control.”The Wall Street Journal “The aching hunger for an absent father provides the emotional propulsion in [this] resonant book for young readers. . . . [an] unusual tribute to the consolations of imagination.”  Booklist, starred, splash-page review “There are plenty of picture books about finding imaginary friends, loving imaginary friends, even wistful books about letting go of imaginary friends. But few have plumbed the depths of loneliness and emotional complexity the way Van de Vendel and Van Hertbruggen do in their stunning, pithy picture book. . . . Van de Vendel’s simple lines evoke a childlike logic about imagination and friendship that’s well-matched by Van Hertbruggen’s utterly gorgeous artwork. . . . With such gaze-worthy art, it’s hard not to pore over each scene, and given the depth of detail, those long looks are rewarding. More rewarding still is the gentle, subtle, and nonjudgmental presentation of tricky feelings that will be familiar to many young readers, as well as the jubilant discovery of the joyful, comforting power of imagination.”Boston Globe “The Dog That Nino Didn’t Have is moving and unexpectedly beautiful. First there’s the voice, full of negatives, which hews pretty closely, though not cloyingly, to the rhythms of child-speak. And then there’s the mood, which lifts or shifts when Nino gets a real dog for his birthday. . . . But this is not a story about the triumph of the real over the imagined. Nino’s dream life of animals swells in the final turn, cracking open his world and remaining true to the book’s fantastic heart.”

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Eye-mesmerizing By Pammycats The Dog That Nino Didn't HaveWritten by Edward Van De VendelIllustrated by Anton Van HertbruggenI received an Advanced Reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.I give this book five out of five stars. It is an excellent and eye-mesmerizing story. I checked out the author and illustrator's websites. The author is from the Netherlands and the illustrator is Belgian. This book has been previously published in Belgium and has received several awards. The book that I am reviewing is a copy of the English language version (2015)Plot:The story is about a young boy (Nino) with an imaginary dog. He and the dog do everything together until the day the boy gets a "real" dog. At first Nino thinks he must give up his imaginary friend. By the end, though, he comes to understand that his new dog and old friend can coexist. The prose is very spare but the illustrations (see below) work in tandem with the words to tell a story. I have re-read this story several times and am still picking up details and information about Nino. The book, as a whole, is enchanting.,IllustrationsThe illustrations are beautiful. They are earth/ natural tones - greens, browns, reds, creams, purples. They remind me of Robert McClosky illustrations - simple lines with smears of colors in all different shades making the world look warm and inviting. I spent a lot of time just looking at these pictures trying to take in all the details and enjoy every bit. The pictures invite you into Nino's life. The imaginary animals are done as simple pen and ink drawings. They are shadow animals but shaped so real. The made-up dog exists only in Nino's mind but he is fully realized. The dog is fearless and does everything the boy wants. He even helps the boy to not be frightened of his Grandmother and licks Nino's tears away when he is sad. The dog knows everything about Nino including his relationship with his Dad (who he talks to on the phone long distance). The illustrations help flesh out the story. The author does not give a back story to Nino but the pictures tell us more about his life. We see the boy talking with his Dad. The reader does not know where Dad lives but the pictures show us that he is a pilot. He is clutching a bag. There are flamingoes, African masks, maps, headphones. The Dad looks super sad. On the next page we see Nino looking sad and being comforted by his imaginary dog. There are African masks in his room. He has model planes, space ships, pictures of aircraft, a child's picture of the imaginary dog, a globe. Later the imaginary dog is gone. Every page at the beginning of the book has the imaginary dog. We look for him on each page. When we get to the page that tells us the imaginary dog is gone, the dog is not in the picture for the first time. There are balloons, feathers, and leaves floating away on the breeze. We turn the page and see Nino with his new real dog. This dog is fully colored and "real" on the page. The words describe his new dog. The picture shows the boy pensively looking at the new dog. The dog is alert and ready to engage with the boy but Nino is leaning away, unsure. The new dog is not the same as his imaginary dog but he and Nino are growing together. At the end, Nino realizes that he can have his real dog and his imaginary animals. They all have a place in Nino's universe. On the last page, we see the new dog and his old imaginary dog curled up together sleeping next to Nino.Overall, I highly recommend this book. I think children as young as three could understand the basics of the story and enjoy the rich illustrations. Adults will simply love this book.

The banana was the only accurate smell and even it was not strong enough for a toddler to distinguish.I had a book for my daughter that smelled amazing..but that was 20 years ago. Certainly they can do a better job with this book.

Stephen I was disappointed with the book because a lot of the smells are similar. Nothing really stands out. The book is good quality and I like the story but the smells are not distinct enough. My daughter does not like it so I am trying it for my youngest. I would not recommend. It seems scratch and sniff books are hard to come by these days.

They are little nature lovers, and seeing a book about geese, and learning little bits of information about them, presented in such a cute manner, was something they really enjoyed. The simple, colorful, and well-done illustrations just kept them even absorbed in it! A great addition to our family's collection!

Great Pictures to Enhance a Good Story By Samantha Benson One of the most important things to get a children's book is searching for one that has images that will entice your child to wonder and question. The pictures are designed to grip your audience, which in this case is littler children. The images in this book are vibrant and draw in the attention of whomever is reading it.The story is one that offers you a beautiful inspirational thought. Watching a goose create a nest, lay her eggs, and then wondering what will happen next. The class in the stories goes through the same steps that the class reading the book would as well. This is one story that I am not afraid to take to story time. McLeod did an outstanding job in both the story and the compilation of the illustrations.

He's excitement was preserved til the end-how will mommy goose guide her goslings out of the school yard. It's a pretty simple story which kids who are in love in animals will find entertaining. I wish the writer focused a little more in laying and hatching of eggs yet I commend her for bringing up facts about the migration direction of geese. Story books are meant not only to entertain but to teach too.Once heard, the kids can easily relay again the story using the pictures. A good read!

During his 2009 inaugural speech, President Obama described the United States as a nation of "Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus--and nonbelievers." It was the first time an American president had acknowledged the existence of this rapidly growing segment of the population in such a public forum. And yet the reasons why more and more people are turning away from religion are still poorly understood. In Faith No More, Phil Zuckerman draws on in-depth interviews with people who have left religion to find out what's really behind the process of losing one's faith. According to a 2008 study, so many Americans claim no religion (15%, up from 8% in 1990) that this category now outranks every other religious group except Catholics and Baptists. Exploring the deeper stories within such survey data, Zuckerman shows that leaving one's faith is a highly personal, complex, and drawn-out process. And he finds that, rather than the cliché of the angry, nihilistic atheist, apostates are life-affirming, courageous, highly intelligent and inquisitive, and deeply moral. Zuckerman predicts that this trend toward nonbelief will likely continue and argues that the sooner we recognize that religion is frequently and freely rejected by all sorts of men and women, the sooner our understanding of the human condition will improve. The first book of its kind, Faith No More will appeal to anyone interested in the "New Atheism" and indeed to anyone wishing to more fully understand our changing relationship to religious faith.

Faith No More: Why People Reject Religion, by Phil Zuckerman

Review "Everyone knows, deep down, that there is a conflict between reason and faith-between having good reasons for what one believes and having bad ones. This conflict finds its most poignant expression in the lives of men and women who have lost their belief in God despite their best efforts to maintain it. Faith No More offers a fascinating look at these lives, and at the myriad ways in which thoughtful people can come to their senses." --Sam Harris, author of the New York Times bestsellers The Moral Landscape, Letter to a Christian Nation, and The End of Faith

"With Faith No More Philip Zuckerman has given us a fascinating look at how individual contemporary Americans raised in various religions awakened out of a belief in the supernatural. His care in not rounding all these up into any facile overarching theories is itself almost supernatural, and yet in this careful reporting of their stories he manages to offer a great deal of insight. It is a wonderfully informative and provocative study and should be read by everyone interested in the real experience of religion and irreligion." --Jennifer Michael Hecht, author of Doubt: A History

"Faith No More helps us understand the diverse routes people take to irreligiosity and the dilemmas they face in a culture that often condemns them. Far from being kneejerk atheists, it turns out that the most secular Americans have actually spent a lot of time wrestling with their faith. Documenting their journeys and placing them in sociological context, this book establishes Phil Zuckerman as one of the most sophisticated analysts of secularity today." --Arlene Stein, Professor of Sociology, Rutgers University

"This could-be-dry content proves immensely engaging becuase of Zuckerman's jargin-free exposition and his seamless incorporation of interview material rendered apparently verbatim-verbal tics("like,""you know," etc) and all-in the manner of a good documentart film."--Ray Olson, Booklist

"Zuckerman's writing is engaging and straightforward, which makes for enjoyable reading...[Faith No More] is laudable for its rich interview data, readability, and insight into the lived experiences of American apostates."--Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion

"This is an absorbing book that puts flesh on the bones of recent identifiable trends in American nonbelief and, in turn, profoundly questions the assumption of a 'spiritual turn' in Western societies. Moreover, it provides distinctive insights into the complexities of belief, nonbelief, doubt and scepticism."--Social Forces

"Zuckerman here builds on his previous work which examined 'Society without God,' that is, Nordic countries which rank amongst the least religious places in the world. In this book he combines qualitative interviews and rich descriptions to produce an interesting and well written book."--Catholic Books Review

"The interview data are valuable for research on irreligion in America. The book will probably be enjoyed most by readers who, like Zuckerman's subjects, have lost their religion. These readers are likely to feel encouraged that they are not alone, that it takes courage to do what they have done, and that life can be good without religion."--Sociology of Religion

About the Author Phil Zuckerman is Professor of Sociology at Pitzer College. He is the author of Society without God: What the Least Religious Nations Can Tell Us about Contentment, Atheism and Secularity, and Invitation to the Sociology of Religion.

Interesting and Enjoyable Book By Book Shark Faith No More: Why People Reject Religion by Phil Zuckerman"Faith No More" is a social study of why people have rejected religion. Social scientist Phil Zuckerman conducts a series of in-depth interviews from apostates of all walks of life and makes some interesting predictions. The book is composed of the following ten chapters: 1. Mother Was an Exorcist, 2. Stopped Making Sense, 3. Misfortune, 4. To Be Mormon, or Not to Be, 5. Sex and Secularity, 6. Others, 7. Jail, Food Stamps, and Atheism, 8. The Apostate Worldview, 9. All in the Family?, and 10. How and Why People Reject Religion.Positives:1. As accessible a book as you will ever read.2. Fascinating social study that focuses on why people reject their religion.3. Thought-provoking questions.4. Mr. Zuckerman treats his topics with utmost care and respect.5. An interesting look at the impact religion has on people. Good stuff!6. The differences between men and women regarding religion.7. Factors that contribute to the loss of religious beliefs.8. Interesting interviews and surprising responses.9. A look at various religious beliefs.10. The impact of religious beliefs and sexuality...interesting insight.11. Find out which academic discipline has the highest rate of atheism and why.12. Find out what factors contribute most to our beliefs.13. Are atheists more immoral than theists?14. Interviewees provide wisdom, "When I was a Christian, I remember being motivated by what I thought God wanted...now, I feel like I am good because I've made the decision to be good."15. The section of "Morality After Religion" is by far the most intellectually rewarding part of this entire book. Kudos.16. A consensus on what is the worst thing about their loss of faith...17. The impact of parenting and religious beliefs.18. The correlation between education and religious beliefs.19. The author keeps things in perspective. Never attempts to make absolute claims.20. What religion provides to the masses.21. Links worked!Negatives:1. The book lacked scientific depth. As an example, I want to know what science has to say about homosexuality or at least some references.2. 87 formal interviews even when well distributed doesn't seem to be an in-depth study but I might be wrong...3. Not as much wisdom or insight as I was hoping for. Being an atheist myself I am familiar with many of the reasons why one has lost interest in religion but I was expecting more.4. I don't agree with the notion that "belief in God isn't easy". It seems to me that people believe in "gods" way too easily and find the opposite to be true. Being an atheist in a predominately religious society is in fact tougher.Overall, I enjoyed this book. It's a page turner of a book and it covers fascinating topics in an accessible manner. I expect mainly atheists and agnostics to read this book but I really believe it would benefit theists most. In other words, everyone should read this book ...I recommend it.Further suggestions: the excellent "Society without God: What the Least Religious Nations Can Tell Us About Contentment" by the same author, "Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity" and "The Christian Delusion: Why Faith Fails" by John Loftus, "Sense and Goodness Without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism" and "Why I'm Not a Christian" by Richard Carrier, "Man Made God: A Collection of Essays" by Barbara G. Walker, "The Invention of the Jewish People" by Shlomo Sand, "The Portable Atheist: Essential Readings for the Nonbeliever" by Christopher Hitchens, "Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America's Leading Atheists" by Dan Barker, "Christian No More: On Leaving Christianity, Debunking Christianity, And Embracing Atheism And Freethinking" by Jeffrey Mark, and "The Invention of God: The Natural Origins of Mythology and Religion" by Bill Lauritzen.

As a recent apostate, I have had the idea of interviewing people of different faiths who subsequently left their church. The author does a good job of presenting the results of his interviews, and as a sociologist, tries to answer the question of why people leave their religion, and what impact that has on them. I think that this is a must read for clergy, lay people and non church goers alike.

It was a very personally affirming and satisfying read. My journey out of faith was multi-faceted, and included almost every "why" included in the book. I would echo other reviews in saying that it could have been a bit more "meaty", it felt like a personal study rather than a very academic one. But I'm ok with that. It made for an easy and pleasant read, and there are plenty of intellectually heavy books about the subject out there.
