Bestseller and author of the popular middle grade series Confectionately Yours Lisa Papademetriou is back with a magical, page-turning adventure for readers of all ages—a touching tale about destiny and the invisible threads that link us all, ultimately, to one another.

Kai and Leila are both finally having an adventure. For Leila, that means a globe-crossing journey to visit family in Pakistan for the summer; for Kai, it means being stuck with her crazy great-aunt in Texas while her mom looks for a job. In each of their bedrooms, they discover a copy of a blank, old book called The Exquisite Corpse. Kai writes three words on the first page—and suddenly, they magically appear in Leila's copy on the other side of the planet. Kai's words are soon followed by line after line of the long-ago, romantic tale of Ralph T. Flabbergast and his forever-love, Edwina Pickle. As the two take turns writing, the tale unfolds, connecting both girls to each other, and to the past, in a way they never could have imagined.

A heartfelt, vividly told multicultural story about fate and how our stories shape it.

A Tale of Highly Unusual Magic, by Lisa Papademetriou

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—A single narrator, using alternating chapters, tells the tale of two 12-year-old girls: Kai, who is visiting her unusual but lovable great-aunt Lavinia in Texas for the summer, and Leila, who is spending her summer in Pakistan, her father's birthplace. Kai, voted weirdest in her class that year, is a loner, overly protected by her mother and expected to practice her violin at all hours. While unpacking in the guest room, Kai finds an old book titled The Exquisite Corpse. Excited to read it, she is disappointed that it contains an odd introduction and only one line of handwritten text, a name: Ralph T. Flabbergast. Guided by some strange intuition, she pens the words "was a complete fool" after his name. This is her first mistake. Now, each time she opens the book, more writing appears. At the same time in Pakistan, Leila, who reads far too many romantic novels and is hoping for an "authentic cultural experience" in her father's land, discovers the very same text in her great-uncle's library. Leila sets out to read the strange handwritten story of Ralph T. Flabbergast but is soon distracted as a beautiful silver and green moth floats in through her window. Momentarily stunned by its luminescence, Leila forgets all about the book. When the moth flies back out the window, Leila is astounded to see a new sentence on the bottom of the page, "Wasn't that beautiful?" It's as if the book is talking to her. Back in Texas, Kai meets Doodle, a young girl out to catch the Celestial Moth, rumored to be almost extinct in this part of the world. Her adventures with Doodle and their subsequent search for the elusive moth, as well as Leila's cultural gaffes around her family, lead readers on a rollicking adventure, complete with a suspiciously operated casket company, a (sort of) pet goat, and an obsession with Pakistani Idol. In the meantime, the story of The Exquisite Corpse unfolds, telling a tale of forbidden love and magic. Papademetriou's tale is sure to please readers who love a fast-paced, clever mystery. VERDICT With magic and humor, this is an excellent addition to middle grade collections.—Carol Connor, Cincinnati Public Schools, OH

Review “Lisa Papademetriou’s prose and sense of place dazzles the ear and eye, while the adventure and mystery binds us from page to page. Now that’s sleight of hand!” (Rita Williams-Garcia, Newbery Honor Winner)“Magic! It’s everywhere—in music, in moths, in an old handwritten book. But the real magic is the exquisite storytelling that sweeps us along until the last wonderful page. This is a book that leaves shimmers in the very air.” (Kathi Appelt, New York Times bestselling author of The Underneath and Keeper)“A lively, heartwarming, sometimes perilous tale packed with creepy elements, appealing characters…and more than a few laughs.” (Common Sense Media)“A rollicking adventure... Engaging and appealing, especially to those who have never quite fit in, this novel is sure to satisfy.” (School Library Journal)“Begging to be read aloud, this is a fun book for middle grade readers, and it will surely inspire them to read—and write—more.” (Booklist)“A beguiling tale of... enduring love and nascent self-discovery.” (Kirkus)“The developing mystery and the promise of new friendships and second chances make for emotionally satisfying engagement… Despite the contemporary setting, the book has an old-fashioned quality of domestic fantasy that will appeal to fans of E. Nesbit and Edward Eager.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“I, for one, did not want the story to end.” (Time for Kids)

From the Back Cover

Greetings salutations and welcome to The Exquisite Corpse!

All it takes is one person bold enough to set the story in motion—let the magic begin!

Kai is in Texas, visiting her truck-driving, hip-hop loving, Sherman tank of a great-aunt. Leila has finally escaped the suburbs and is ready for a glamorous summer of international adventure and royal treatment with her father's family in Pakistan. They have no idea that their utterly different worlds are about to collide.

Each of them finds a copy of a mysterious old book, and when Kai writes three words on the blank pages, they magically appear in Leila's copy on the other side of the globe. Kai's words are soon followed by line after line of the long-ago, romantic tale of Ralph T. Flabbergast and his forever-love, Edwina Pickle. When Leila adds a sentence, more story appears. Every sentence they write—whether it's inspired by a Chihuahua attack (Kai) or a misunderstanding with a goatherd (Leila)—inspires a reaction from the book. And so it goes until the fable is unspooling madly, connecting both girls to each other and to Ralph and Edwina in ways they never could have imagined.

This hilarious, inventive, and deeply touching story about destiny—how we shape it, and how it in turn shapes us—carries readers along as Kai, Leila, Ralph, and Edwina begin the search for their true selves, and discover the invisible threads that link us all, ultimately, to one another.

It was too young for an eight-year-old By Elizabeth Goehringer Eight year old Tommy said it was kind of boring, but he thinks maybe it was too young for him. He read it because it has his name in the title, but he said it had a good lesson about eating good food. (But he would have liked it better if it had been about candy!)

“A fantastic story, thrillingly told. This book has a superpower—you can’t put it down.” —Jonathan Stroud, author of the bestselling Bartimaeus Trilogy The truth about the Super children—who have real powers like flight and super strength—is finally exposed, and the town of Noble’s Green has created a special boarding school for its superpowered children. That’s where all Daniel’s friends are headed, while he—regular kid that he is—is headed to summer school. But all is not well at the Academy for the Extraordinarily Gifted. A clique of popular kids (led by a pair of sinister twins) has taken over the school, and once again, it’s powerless Daniel who may be able to stop them. To do so, he will have to turn to his sworn enemy, the  Shroud, for help. From the Hardcover edition.

Villainous (Supers of Noble's Green), by Matthew Cody

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—In this sequel to Powerless and Super (Knopf), the town of Noble's Green has been in the spotlight ever since 14-year-old Daniel Corrigan caused the event that led to hundreds of people waking up with their stolen superpowers returned to them. A new academy has been built to teach and train the children and teens with powers, though Daniel's super friends have opted not to attend. Escalating acts of vandalism in the town turn public opinion against those with powers, and Daniel suspects there is something more sinister at work. Daniel and his friends are pitted against a new group of superpowered teens called "Nobles," but their old nemesis, Herman Plunkett, is also a suspect. Meanwhile, Daniel is facing complicated feelings for his friend Mollie. The final book in the trilogy explores interesting themes as the self-professed "Nobles" look down on those without powers and proceed to act with the belief that no one can or should stop them. As with the earlier titles, the book's strengths lie in the solid pacing and engaging main characters, particularly Daniel as the "powerless" protagonist who leads the group and uses his detective skills to solve the mystery. Though there is summary information sprinkled throughout, readers will want to have read the volumes to fully understand and appreciate the story arc. VERDICT The stakes are higher than ever and readers will fly through the pages to see how it all turns out.—Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL

In fact, they had a little argument over who was going to read Villainous first. I gave it to the 9 year old but the 12 year old didn't think that was fair, snuck it from him that night and stayed up to read the entire thing. He was up so late that Friday that we had to wake him up out of a sound sleep the next morning at 12:45pm!!! The poor 9 year old cried when he found out because he had wanted to read it first! Get your children each their own copies so you don't have to go through what I went through.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this is a good read. My son (4th grade then By avocat IF you've read the previous 2 books, this is a good read. My son (4th grade then; 5th grade now) and I both loved Super, the first book in the series. We couldn't wait to read more. Powerless, the second book in the series, was also good (though not quite at the level of Super). But now 2 books in, we really wanted to see where Villainous was going to go. We pre-ordered, and waited a few months to get it. We're both happy with the purchase, and glad to have the book. But again, if you haven't read the first two, this one will be much less impactful.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great end to a great series! By galaxian6 First of all, ignore gav321's review, he was being petty. This book doesn't have to be realistic, it's about superpowered kids for crying out loud! Anyway, this book has some really interesting plot twists, and it had me gripped during the last two-three chapters. I didn't want the series to end so soon, but I'm glad it ended well. Btw, you can skip the prologue and still be fine, if it bores you, you don't have to read it. It's not part of the main story.

After reading the book I felt it would be a great Sunday School study By shauna catania This book was an inspiration to me during a time when doubts plagued myspiritual life regarding the efficacy of prayer. The author uses the Lord'sPrayer as his outline and I think it worked extremely well to use somethingso well-known and comforting to explain and teach about such a complextopic. After reading the book I felt it would be a great Sunday School study. The 10 chapters were easily adapted to a 10-week study on prayer which weused in our Adult Bible Study on Sunday mornings. I was pleased to see thatthis book positively affected the others in our Sunday School class just asit had positively affected me. I highly recommend this book to anyonetrying to understand what prayer is all about.

Johnny is different. He is never exactly on time, he can't seem to stick to a routine and he often speaks in cryptic idioms. Johnny is neurotypical, but that's OK.

A picture book with a difference, Why Johnny Doesn't Flap turns the tables on common depictions of neurological difference by drolly revealing how people who are not on the autistic spectrum are perceived by those who are. The autistic narrator's bafflement at his neurotypical friend's quirks shows that 'normal' is simply a matter of perspective.

Why Johnny Doesn't Flap: NT is OK!, by Clay Morton, Gail Morton

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—Books about disability are often told from the point of view of those without disabilities. By turning this traditional framing and structure on its head, the authors emphasize that differences can be subjective. The narrator, who has autism, matter-of-factly outlines the ways that his friend Johnny, who is neurotypical (NT), seems strange. For instance, Johnny looks right into people's eyes when talking to them and doesn't have meltdowns when faced with a change in schedule. Ultimately, the main character appreciates that being different isn't wrong, which helps him connect with his pal. The typed-style text and realistic, muted illustrations initially seem flat. However, considering the audience—those with autism who are learning about the behaviors of neurotypically developing peers—the design makes sense. The visuals paint the world as the protagonist sees it and are realistic in execution. The book has a minor flaw: the abbreviation of NT in the subtitle could be confusing. VERDICT It will take extra work for librarians to get this offering in the hands of the right readers, but its unique perspective and important message make it a worthwhile purchase.—Renee Grassi, Glen Ellyn Public Library, Glen Ellyn, IL

Review A delightful departure from the norm, Why Johnny Doesn't Flap flips the script and models empathy, acceptance, and compassion for that oddest of neurologies, the neurotypical. This irreverent subversion is a breath of fresh air, and reminds us that there's not a right way to have a brain, and that 'normal' is in the eye of the beholder. We're better off with a dose of the Mortons' wry perspective. -- Julia Bascom, author, The Obsessive Joy of Autism The young narrator of this charming book helps readers understand why a neurotypical peer's behavior can be so confusing. Fun illustrations support the text, providing extra opportunities for discussion exploring the differences between NT and ASD behaviors, and that's more than OK. That's super duper! -- Liane Holliday Willey, author of Pretending to be Normal, Asperger Syndrome in Adolescents, and Asperger Syndrome in the Family A young narrator explains that his neurotypical friend is OK, even though he sometimes plays games out of order and doesn't flap his hands to express emotions. It's a neat bit of role reversal. It's really OK that Johnny arrives for playdates a few minutes late or early ("hopeless when it comes to punctuality"), that his gaze is direct, that he really doesn't seem interested in knowing everything about hydraulic forklifts, wants to play with other kids ("Maybe he's a little too obsessed with social interaction"), and never has a meltdown when there's a fire drill at school. "Mom says that everyone's brain is different, and different isn't always wrong." A closing note for parents offers further bids for acceptance: "as many as 67 in 68 children may be neurotypical. So if your child does not currently have an NT kid in their life, they almost certainly will." Merry's stripped-down, neatly drawn generic views of dewy-eyed figures with fixed, tight-lipped smiles neither give the characters any individuality nor do the premise's ingenuity much service, though they are doubtless calculated to make it easy for the book's autistic readers to decode. It looks bland at first, but it's a clever perspective changer for NT children as well as a rare chance for young readers with autism to see themselves as a point-of-view character. (Picture book. 6-8) Kirkus Reviews An unnamed boy with autism describes his friend Johnny's unusual and sometimes perplexing behaviors: "Mom says it is because he is NT, or neurotypical. He doesn't have autism, so his brain works differently from mine, but that's ok." Johnny doesn't arrive precisely on time to visit, makes direct eye contact, "doesn't have a topic he knows everything about, like World War II or dinosaurs or forklifts," and "always wants to play with other kids." Merry's artwork is somewhat rudimentary (the boys' facial expressions scarcely change, even when the narrator is having a "meltdown," and there isn't much variation in the staging of the images). But the authors' subversion of expectations through the narration is effective and thought-provoking, and may well lead neurotypical readers to reconsider their own behaviors and judgments. Ages 5-9. (Oct.) Publishers Weekly

(Julia Bascom, author, The Obsessive Joy of Autism)The young narrator of this charming book helps readers understand why a neurotypical peer's behavior can be so confusing. Fun illustrations support the text, providing extra opportunities for discussion exploring the differences between NT and ASD behaviors, and that's more than OK. That's super duper! (Liane Holliday Willey, author of Pretending to be Normal, Asperger Syndrome in Adolescents, and Asperger Syndrome in the Family)A young narrator explains that his neurotypical friend is OK, even though he sometimes plays games out of order and doesn't flap his hands to express emotions. 6-8) (Kirkus Reviews)An unnamed boy with autism describes his friend Johnny's unusual and sometimes perplexing behaviors: "Mom says it is because he is NT, or neurotypical. Ages 5-9. As an autistic adult, I wish I'd had this book growing up. Autistic people - especially children - are constantly given the message from peers, the media, and society as a whole that we're "weird" or "broken" somehow. Naturally, this can be very damaging to self-esteem. NT people are just as confusing to us as we are to them, and Morton makes that point very well. I will be buying more copies of this to give to autistic friends and children in my life.

It is a great way to help others in the family that do not have ASD understand. We read it at Christmas time in our house. I hope to be a tradition and to share with many other families.
