Disappointment is something everyone has faced: the loss of a job. An in ability to become pregnant. The sudden death of a friend or family member. A failed test. A broken promise. The game-winning shot that doesn't go in. Three words from the doctor: "You've got cancer." While all of us have faced it, not all of us have learned to manage the reality of disappointment in our lives. Kristi Walker has taken on this task, and in this book she is presenting a biblical perspective on a topic with which everyone is familiar. And while this book was written with women in mind, men will do well to put into practice the principles Kristi writes about. Kristi does a great job of combining powerful personal stories with rich Scriptural content, making "Disappointment" an excellent resource for anyone going through tough times. There is only one person that will never disappoint us, and Kristi does a fantastic job of pointing the reader back to Him, with truth wrapped in understanding.

By Amy Capon My heart was both greatly encouraged and challenged reading this book as Kristi shares openly and honestly about the struggle with disappointments in life. Her biblical approach on how to view and deal with this topic hit the nail on the head. It's a must read whether for personal reading or group study.-Amy

Realizing you have struggled with disappointment for years By Colleen Realizing you have struggled with disappointment for years, and not acknowledging or taking care of it can be a very hard fact to face. I knew when I heard about Kristi's book it was what I needed. I purchased it and then there it sat. For weeks....months. Actually I read the forward and introduction and cried...hard and then put it down. Now I have finally read it and oh the help it is right now. I actually posted a question on facebook about disappointment and Kristi commented "read my book" Hahahaha...and then others who had read it also encouraged me to read it. Excellent stuff in here...both personal experiences of Kristi's and of friends of hers that were willing to share...and bible passages and historical stories that speak to this subject. My very favorite part was Kristi sharing her ancestry and how Jesus gave her such a heritage. I will be reading it again and giving it to someone I know will benefit. Excellent book, excellent title, excellent author. Thank-you Kristi.

By Kevin This book is an excellent book for those who are looking for answers as to why they feel disappointed, discouraged or even depressed. The author speaks directly but with care, about how we should respond to feelings of disappointment. Her own personal experiences give us understanding that helps us apply the truths. It challenges us to examine ourselves. The author answers the question, "Why do I feel disappointed?" with her definition of disappointment. "An unfulfilled self-appointment, expectation, longing, desire, or hope in someone or something other than God and His will, resulting in feelings of loss, sadness or even depression." She shows us through the lives of Biblical people how to pinpoint our disappointments and change our thinking, and have hope. As the author says, "Placing all your hope in God and in the will of God for your life is the only way to never experience disappointment."

Oh sure, we've all heard the story of Noah’s ark a hundred times. But have we heard it from the perspective of the animals who lived through that crazy-long boat ride?   Part of the Their Side of the Story series, The Raven and Noah's Ark imagines how a certain raven from the story might recount those forty days and nights and offers an important lesson in jealousy. Plus, the Parent Connection feature helps parents and kids further discuss the message behind the original Bible story.   Kids ages 4 to 8 will love discovering Noah’s epic voyage in a whole new way. And don’t miss the other rollicking Bible stories in this series: The Frog and the Plagues, The Lion and Daniel, The Whale and Jonah, and The Donkey and Jesus.

A Unique Take on Noah's Ark By Joshua Olds Ages: 4-8Themes: Jealousy, ContentmentPurchase Price: $3.99Have you ever been jealous of someone who seems to be better than you at everything? In this atypical keeping-up-with-the-Joneses story, Raven overcomes his jealousy of the Dove family and learns to appreciate the hard work and sacrifice of others. In their Have You Heard Their Side of the Story series, Troy Schmidt and Cory Jones combine talents to take young readers on a journey through a biblical narrative using the eyes of an animal participant…in this case, one of Noah’s two ravens. Now, if you know the biblical story, you know that the Raven was sent out before the Dove, but it was the dove that found dry ground. In the story, that translates to Raven being a little more than miffed at being drug along on this long and smelly cruise and getting angrier and angrier at the perfect life of the Dove family. When Raven fails to be able to fly enough to find dry land, the job goes to Dove instead. At the end, Raven has a change of heart and realizes that Dove was simply doing what God had created him to do and the two families become friends. As you can tell, the storyline deals with the emotions of bitterness and jealousy. This is an important theme in the life of a young person, especially at an age where skill sets vary tremendously. Some can read fluently, some stumble over letters. Some are athletic, others struggle to run. It’s a difficult age because it has the most developmental variation at a time when kids are least likely to understand it.I felt that the book did a great job treating the issue positively, taking young readers through accurate emotions associated with jealousy. The “Parent Connection” at the end really ties things together, giving some simple discussion questions, a memory verse, a Bible reading, and an activity.Like the rest of the books in the Their Side of the Story series, the reading level hovers between 2nd and 3rd grade, so this is a book that “older” readers can read and younger readers can have read to them. The visuals are fun, the colors vibrant, and the story engaging. A great book and a great series for your little one!

The goal of this simple book is to help Christians gain a Jesus-centered, gospel-focused mentality while reading and applying the Scripture and living together in the community of the church. Consider the book a quick start guide to help create a Christ-centered life and ministry trajectory. There really is a way to read, apply, preach, serve, and live with Jesus as the Hero that keeps the gospel of God’s sovereign grace front and center in everything.

Any biblical truth abstracted from the gospel is corrupted. The only possible context for genuine obedience is faith in Jesus. Therefore, genuine spiritual motivation must always be presented in terms of the gospel. We are not heroes; we are sinners, failures, and weaklings—the not-nobles of the world. Attempting to become a spiritual hero or to cultivate a heroic image is an empty, vain, hollow, and hopeless pursuit. There is only one Hero—Jesus—and he has no rivals. When we start trusting him and stop trying to be him, we can say with Paul, “For freedom Christ has set us free” (Gal. 5:1).

"David Prince is my favorite living preacher. He connects every text of scripture with the central message of the Bible: the gospel of the kingdom of Jesus Christ. This book models that biblical strategy. I highly commend it for anyone who preaches, teaches, or seeks to apply God's word." Russell D. Moore, President, Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention

"The saving glory of Jesus Christ is the world's only hope and thus ought to be the church's only focus. What a great gift this wonderful book is, then, in helping us direct our vision and ministry away from ourselves and to Christ the Redeemer!" Jared C. Wilson, Managing Editor of Midwestern Seminary's For the Church (ftc.com) and Author, The Prodigal Church

"I will be quick to commend this book to those who want to make sure King Jesus is kept at the center of the life of the church and all the things she does to rightly honor and worship the One that the Scriptures testify to from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21." Daniel L. Akin, President, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Solid, helpful wisdom from my old seminary professor. By R.T. Marsh During the course of my studies at SBTS, I was privileged to take "The Ministry of Proclamation" class under Dr. Russell Moore & Pastor (now Dr.) David Prince. In reading this book, so much of those lectures and "aha!" moments came back to me. Jesus, Pastor Prince taught us, is the point of every story, and thus to be the hero of every sermon. We are to apply our text to Jesus first, that our people might see themselves truly "in Christ." Our illustrations are to point them to Jesus (opening a window, not painting a portrait) so that Scripture's authority and Christ's supremacy are never detracted from, but rather served and embraced. It would make sense that Christ, being the centerpiece of Scripture, would also take his place of preeminence in our leadership and administration of his Church. Enter this volume. From staffing to preaching, from counselling to announcements, Jesus is to be King. The slender book is helpfully laid out: concise chapters mean that busy pastors will actually read them, and the topics are skillfully and faithful handled in an interesting style which keeps your attention. You could easily read it through in one sitting, but you'll want to read and revisit for the maximum help.Note also that Dr. Prince is no mere pragmatist nor modernist in his work here; he has drunk deeply from the wisdom of our forebears, most notably Andrew Fuller. (It was helpful enough to push me to pick up a copy of Fuller's collected Works from Banner of Truth!)All in all, Church with Jesus as Hero is an excellent and helpful volume which should be read by pastors, elders, deacons, and seminarians (at the very least). It will repay your time with clear thinking and biblical help. Warmly recommended. In accordance with federal law: I was provided a free copy for review purposes and was not obligated to provide positive feedback.

You will find in these pages a Christ-centered vision for ministry that covers the gambit from preaching to children's ministry to thinking about in-service announcements. If you're looking for a resource that will help you think out practically what it means for Jesus to be the hero of the Church, this is it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding By Joey Parker I have been blessed in my 9 years as a Christian in quite a few ways. One of this ways is being able to sit under sound Christ-centered expository preaching every week. The other way was having elders that could guide and direct me to what types of books to read, and once I became more grounded I was able to find so many quality, sound books that would teach me about God and His Word. Sometimes, because of this background I quickly forget that this may not be the norm for many believers. Are there many who are reading their Bibles and do not know what the central message of the Bible is? Even worse, are there men in the pulpit whose preaching week in and week out is not Christ centered. Do we often fall into the traps of looking for examples in the Bible, or we just want to find the moral commands so we can obey and try harder. Or do we view God as a genie who is ready and waiting to grant us our every wish if we would only name it and claim it. Christ is the key to Scripture and sadly, substitutes abound. Church With Jesus as the Hero is a new book written by David Prince and the staff at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church that, as they call it, is a "quick start guide" to reading and understanding the Bible from a Christ-centered perspective. When I see the words "quick start" I immediately think introductory. So, when reading this book my first thought was "Will this be accessible to a broad range of Christians?" I also think that for an introductory book to be worthwhile it also ought to appeal to those who may already know and apply the truths it contains. So the second question I thought of was: "Will this book be worthwhile for those who have already read behind men like Graeme Goldsworthy, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Bryan Chapell, Ed Clowney and others?" I am happy to say that the answer to both of these questions is a resounding: YES. While being accessible to most Christians it also is a wonderful reminder to even the most seasoned preacher of the necessity of seeing Christ in all of Scripture and being able to articulate this truth in our corporate worship.Part one of this book guides the reader through four different Bible text, first showing how the passage is often interpreted and then guiding the reader through a series of questions to draw out from the text how it relates to Christ. This section is very well done. I found the repetition of questions from one chapter to the next very helpful. These questions (written in bold in every chapter) will help to guide the reader's thoughts and quickly grasp how the authors are trying to see the text through a Christ-centered lens. Part two focuses on preaching with Christ as the Hero. This section has a helpful chapter on moralistic preaching and how it falls short. I was also blessed by the chapter where Prince used Andrew Fuller's words to answer objections to preaching Christ from every text. I appreciated this because it showed that these are not new questions that arise and the answers to the questions are not new either. Part three expands the Christ-centered thinking into the church's: singing, counseling, missions, adoption ministry, ethnicity, spiritual growth, and even announcements. This section is a great addition in that the book doesn't stop at the preaching but rather sets out to view all of our corporate worship through a Christ-centered lens.I was tremendously blessed by this book. I have read as many sound books about preaching and ministry as I can get my hands on, and I am pleased to say that this one will be one that I return to for encouragement in the future. It was a great introduction or reminder of why and how Christ should be central in all that we do as a church. Well done!I received a copy of this book from Ashland Avenue Baptist Church/Ashland Publishing in exchange for an honest review

Comprised of fun and playfully surprising contemporary illustrations and a satisfying tall tale, Why Dogs Have Wet Noses is a refreshing and memorable take on an old story. Told with dry humor, this is a secular story of how, not long after the world began, it started to rain, and it was the kind of rain that pounds down and never stops. Wise as he was, a man named Noah decided to build a lifeboat, and he set about gathering as many kinds of creatures as he could think of. And he had the good sense to invite slugs, spiders, and the other slimy, creepy-crawly creatures that most people try to get rid of by spraying or stepping on. He also let a funny looking dog with a big soft nose trudge on board all by himself. Had he not done so, the Ark, as you may not know, would definitely have sunk. A lively tale of man and dog, Why Dogs Have Wet Noses, with its quirky, highly witty illustrations, is sure to delight!

Why Dogs Have Wet Noses, by Øyvind Torseter, Kenneth Steven

Review A Best Jewish Children's Book of 2015“a nifty combination of a biblical tale and a canine trait, but it's the humorous details of life aboard the Ark that are most likely to captivate readers.” – Publishers Weekly“Children will pour over the details in Torseter's cutaway view as creatures play cards, a crew member draws a map, and the dog shadows Noah carrying supplies. Twenty days in, the Ark springs a leak, and what do you think is the remedy? (Hint: It answers the title question.) As an extra bonus, Noah needs no dove when he has man's best friend on board to catch a whiff of land. […] Whether or not children are familiar with Noah and his Ark, they will clamor for repeated readings of this original retelling that doubles as a pourquoi tale.” – Jennifer M. Brown, Children’s Editor, Shelf Awareness“an irreverent and utterly heartwarming modern reimagining of Noah’s Ark.” -- Maria Popova, Brain Pickings“A fanciful retelling of the story of Noah and the Ark doubles as a pourquoi tale.” -- STARRED REVIEW, Kirkus Reviews"And the art—I think it’s pen and ink with gouache?—is even better than the text. Obsessive kids can study cross-sections of the ark, segmented as in a Richard Scarry story, full of kooky creatures—look at the baboon with the bright pink butt! —and hey, Mr. and Mrs. Noah look like aging Berkeley hippies! Torseter is Norway’s most famous cartoonist, and everything he draws is funny. And because the book is published by Enchanted Lion, an arty indie publisher in Brooklyn that only publishes gorgeous books, the paper is deliciously heavy...." Marjorie Ingall, Tablet"I like how it’s the story of Noah’s Ark but much funnier. There are funny things happening on every page, like animals eating lollipops, a wet rabbit in a towel, and a dinosaur. I like that the pictures are detailed with shadows but some of them are not colored in. When you are looking at the ark, the pictures show you the walls but also what’s inside the rooms. You can find new things every time you read the story. I love this book!"–– Reviewed by Kilian, Age 7, Kids Book Buzz“Why Dogs Have Wet Noses provides a funny, secular retelling of Noah's Ark and explains why indeed dogs have wet noses.”-- Alex Mutter, Shelf Awareness

The illustration is wild and fanciful, unconventional and a bit odd. As a Christian, I'm a bit at odds with the story but it's not offensive and all in good fun. This is a re-imagining (*not* a retelling) of the Noah's Ark story. Really it's a combination of Noah's Ark and The Little Dutch Boy (the one who puts his finger in the dyke). Combine those and mix in an indigenous "why" or "how" legend and you've got "Why Dogs Have Wet Noses"! It's a cute story, the dog plugs up a leak with his nose, we have to imagine he can breathe under water but hey! it's a tall tale and the illustrator even throws in a rainbow at the end to acknowledge where the story comes from. Cute. I like that Noah and his wife look like Bohemian Beatniks.

It's creative and irreverent - love Noah's tattoo and his wife's partially shaved head. Sweet for kiddos but also just a nice break from the norm.

Dante, Jr. This is a lovely addition to my Goosebumps collection, and I feel Scholastic really did a fine job with the whole design. The books inside the Tin are "Night of the Living Dummy", "One Day at Horror-land", "The Haunted Mask", "Welcome to Dead House" and "Say Cheese and Die". They have the original covers from the 1990's and the book designs are the same, except for the fact that the Goosebumps titles lack the tradmark "bumps"...just flat title. Other than that, original books from the 90's. Very happy with this product and I hope Scholastic continues to release more original Goosebumps title with the cool artwork. Not a fan of the new reprint artwork, not as scary.

A retro collector's tin collecting five classic Goosebumps' titles By Z Hayes My almost eleven-year-old daughter and I have been long-time Goosebumps fans. My daughter has devoured most of the books in the series and when I saw this Retro Scream Collection which comes in a cool tin box, I simply couldn't resist. The tin contains five classic Goosebumps titles:Welcome to Dead House, Say Cheese And Die!, Night of the Living Dummy, The Haunted Mask, and One Day at HorrorLand. This is also a great set for collectors since each book comes with the original cover art. Great fun for young fans who love a scare-rific time!

It started with the TV show that's on Netflix, then the movie came out and I took her to see it. I purchased this as a Christmas present. Although she's not at the reading level for the books themselves, it's a perfect way for us to share the interest. The quality of the tin and the books is perfect, other than not having the raised lettering on the book covers, and I was tempted to keep the set for myself!
