The twin forces of globalization and urbanization are transforming the context of global missions. While the Western church grapples with the challenges of evangelism in an age of globalization, new evangelistic opportunities are emerging that blur the conventional boundaries between local and global outreach. Even as the rise of a persistent post-Christendom presents new challenges for the church, global migration is rearranging the religious and ethnic makeup of our cities. Cities are centers of constant change, and in an urban world, current missionaries will need to become adaptable. Furthermore, contemporary missions strategies will need to engage a world organized along networks that may transcend geographic boundaries. Painting a picture of evangelism and church planting in our urban and global world, Crossroads of the Nations utilizes contemporary data and together with missionary accounts – both actual and recent – tells a story of transnational missions impacting our world.

By Dan Bouchelle I first met Jared Looney in 2003 when I attended the Urban Ministry Conference he organized in Manhattan. That event changed my life in ways I'm still unpacking. It was there I caught the vision for how God was re-organizing the world through urbanization and globalization. Everything had to change, but how? I've been working on that for a dozen years or so now and looking for others who can help me. Jared has been at the top of that list for years. Now, with this book, he may be at the top. Jared not only pulls together a wealth of data to explain what is happening all over the world, he also charts a course to engage it that is theological well grounded and is proven to produce meaningful disciple making movements around the world. Jared and his co-workers are charting a corse for the rest of us in practice as well as theory.Transnational evangelism is not a fringe movement on the edge of the church, it represents the future. I heartily recommend this work, but warn you to leave your preconceived notions about the world and the church behind. God is drawing us into a gloriously diverse urban destination known as the New Jerusalem and we are at an moment of shifting epochs. In days like these, the church needs guides like Jared.

By Gareth Jared Looney provides an excellent resource that offers hope and encouragement for a new era in missions. In Crossroads of the Nations: Diaspora, Globalization, and Evangelism, Looney asserts that the current trend of globalization and urbanization holds great promise for evangelism especially within the global cities of the world. The global city transcends borders and reinforces cultural connections as mobile populations develop relational and cultural context between international cities, nations, and continent. The urban setting is the likely setting where missions and diaspora intersect as global cities are the gateway destination for immigrants from all over the world. These cities serve as launching pads for church planting movements in other parts of the world and as locations for transplanted immigrant churches. Looney provides clear examples of how New York City has become a hub for African church planting movements in North America and how the metropolitan area is home to large churches of Korean, Latino, Indian, and Chinese immigrants. He also advocates that global migration provides an unprecedented opportunity to present the gospel cross-culturally among the “unreached people groups” of the world. Many of these people are from nations that are closed to traditional missions (churches/agencies sending missionaries into unreached areas). While not abandoning traditional missions, Looney suggests that “diaspora missions” will strategically target “next door” unreached people groups and engage them with the transformative gospel. He calls for American churches to initiate cross-cultural partnerships with diaspora churches in order provide a new gateway for evangelistic ministry. Most importantly, Looney anchors his positivistic message in solid theology. We seek to ground our efforts in God’s call to minister to the alien among us, to love and care for others, and to make disciples of all nations. Our mission is to care for people through an integrated model of ethics and presentation of the gospel of grace. “Making disciples” involves a “both/and” approach to social issues and gospel, not an “either/or.” He warns that we are at risk of losing our grip on the deep ethics of the Kingdom of God when we neglect the poor and the foreigner; yet, he also alerts that we at risk of losing ourselves as ambassadors of the Gospel if we abandon the profound need for eternal salvation.I would recommend this book to a broad audience but especially to those in urbanized settings and those dedicated to evangelism and missions.

Beebe Crossroads of the Nations is a great book, introducing readers to the issues involved with Diaspora Missions today. Jared Looney writes from personal experience and from interaction with those laying the groundwork for this cutting edge missions practice. His wealth of knowledge and experience, combined with his innovative thinking, will surely challenge the reader, pastor, lay person, church, or missionary to consider the complexity and high value of this ministry pursuit. My greatest negative critique from the book is that while comprehensive, it does not seem to be carefully edited. The chapters are very very long and it was not very clear how each section of the chapters or chapters of the book built upon or related to one another. Many of the issues are talked about over and over again, which makes it very difficult to read. I believe the author could have written more concisely and directly. The book could be much shorter and would be more helpful if so.Nevertheless, there is a wealth of insight in the book to be taken into consideration for Urban ministry as related to Diaspora Missions and Globalization.
