'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' is the central text of the Christian Science religion. It was written by Mary Baker Eddy, inspired by studies of the Bible she undertook in 1867 following a healing experience. Science and Health posits a wholly metaphysical view of Christianity in which sin, disease, and death are not of God, and are therefore not real. Further, it suggests that by striving toward a spiritual understanding of the world as God's perfect creation, these "false beliefs" are shed from one's experience. ***This user-friendly eBook version is formatted to include all the sidenotes and line numbers exactly as you would find them in the actual book.***

Science and Health, With Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy

From the Publisher The author, Mary Baker Eddy, devoted more than four decades to refining this message of hope, healing, comfort and spiritual strength. First published in 1875, this book has a 125-year history of inspiring and healing readers worldwide. It is published in English and in 16 different bi-lingual translations and has sold more than ten million copies.

About the Author Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) considered herself a spiritual pioneer whose work encompassed the disciplines of science, theology, and medicine. A lifelong student of the Bible, she gained a powerful insight in 1866 when she experienced a dramatic recovery from a life-threatening accident after reading Jesus' healings. From that pivotal moment, she sought an understanding of how she had been healed. She returned to the Bible and prayed for answers. It became clear to her that spiritual healing was based on divine laws of God, Spirit, and that these laws could be applied by anyone to heal every form of human suffering and sin. In this light, spiritual healing wasn't miraculous, but an effect of understanding God's omnipotence and love, which are as real and provable today as in biblical times. For the next four decades, Mary Baker Eddy devoted herself to practicing, teaching, and sharing this healing Science of Christianity. As she became known as a Christian healer, she was often called on to cure cases physicians had given up. Once she went to the bedside of a patient whom a well-known attending physician had pronounced dying of pneumonia. She wrote, "On seeing her immediately restored by me without material aid, he asked earnestly if I had a work describing my system of healing ... he urged me immediately to write a book which should explain to the world my curative system of metaphysics" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 105).At the time, she was already writing notes that would expand into her primary work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which contains the full explanation of Christian Science and its biblical foundation of spiritual healing. For well over a century, readers have shared how reading and studying this book have given them a new spiritual sense of the Bible and of their unchangeable relationship to God. And these new insights resulted in physical healing and moral regeneration that have transformed their lives. Mary Baker Eddy went on to establish the Church of Christ, Scientist, as a Christian denomination and worldwide movement of spiritual healers. She published 15 more books and started several weekly and monthly magazines-the Christian Science Sentinel, The Christian Science Journal, and The Herald of Christian Science-that feature articles on Christian Science practice and verified testimonies of healing. In 1908, at the age of 87, she founded The Christian Science Monitor, a global newspaper that provides balanced, humane coverage of world news, and that is as alert to progress and promise as to humanity's need to address suffering and conflict. It was established to "injure no man, but bless all mankind" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353).

This is the only guaranteed authentic paperback version of Science and Health on Amazon's web site By Charles Rower Science and Health can, and will, if you stay with it, change your life for the better in ways beyond what you can currently dream. It has done so with my life, and with thousands upon thousands of others, around the globe, for over a century. However, this particular copy, to my knowledge, is the only Authorized paperback version of Science and Health (by Mary Baker Eddy) available for sale on the Amazon web site. Authorized, in this case, means authorized by the Christian Science Board of Directors - i.e. the Directors of the Christian Science Church which Mary Baker Eddy founded. Since the Church's copyright on the book has expired, others may legally print the book, but the only way to be absolutely certain you are getting what the author, Mary Baker Eddy intended, is to purchase a copy that has been authorized by, and published by, The Christian Science Board of Directors. For example, many of the other, no doubt well-meaning publishers who have copied this book, have left off certain key chapters. The other way to determine whether the copy has been authorized by this Board is to examine if the circular Cross and Crown seal appears on the front of the book. The Church's registered trademark for this Cross and Crown seal is still in force, and that also assures the authenticity is genuine. Now, buy it, and read it at a pace you are comfortable with. A few pages before turning the light out at night is one good way to begin. Be prepared to be challenged as to your core beliefs as to what is real and what is unreal. It matters not whether you agree with everything you read, but it would be well to place your primary focus on what you do agree with, setting aside for the moment what you do not understand and cannot accept. In most cases, on the second time around, what you had thought was a problem will simply have disappeared, and your happiness, and general well-being will have moved forward in the process.Enjoy. You are about to take up the read of your life.

I've always been deeply moved by the fact that the author committed its pages to "honest seekers for Truth," because that's what the book delivers. Mind you, this is more of a spiritual adventure than just a good read. It's also not for the faint of heart. It challenges the conventional wisdom on subjects such as science, theology, and medicine, as much today as when it was first published over 150 years ago. That's why, I suppose, it is so controversial. I wasn't raised in Christian Science. My family is very involved in medicine and, although not a sickly child, from time to time I was made to endure injections and medical treatments which were painful, effective, and produced negative side-effects. Deep down I felt there was something better, especially when I saw family members pass on under conventional medical care. Over a period of years, through study and research, I began to see clearly a connection between mind, body and spirit. I experienced in various ways how my thought influenced my health and sense of well-being. Two years before I was introduced Science and Health I was diagnosed with a condition the physician considered incurable. I was looking for a more hopeful outlook in alternative medicine and was coping with diet, vitamins and alot of prayer. However, when I began reading Science and Health, I realized that I could be healed. I dispensed with the vitamins and diet, continued to read Science and Health, to pray and be prayed for. I was completely healed in 2 weeks. That was almost 25 years ago, and I have had no relapse. The book clearly explains a method of healing that can be learned by anyone, of any religious persuasion, or none at all. What's more, there are no harmful side effects from reading and praying! The author writes, "There is moral freedom in Soul." I take this to mean freedom from coercion, and freedom from suffering. If you're at all interested, please do buy this book. You won't regret it, and it may be the best purchase you've ever made. It was for me.

Maybe even 20. Today, most people I listen to tend to agree with the premises of the book if terms are modern and understood. The world is approaching the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy while not giving her credit. And that is OK. Apparently she never expected for all people to become Christian Scientists. She seemed to know that whatever Truth is, if it is truth, people will arrive at it by different roads and that is fine. It is interesting to me that people are approaching what Eddy said so many years ago, and most are not members of the Christian Science church.Various respected people with large followings are using the books ideas as their own. Again, that would probably be fine with Eddy.Leading philosophers, accomplished physical scientists and the like are coming to the conclusion that matter is not what it seems to be, that thoughts are things and that thoughts determine experience and make a life and that there is a divine Intelligence that made/makes all of the amazing order in the universe. Call it what you will. Folks can tap into it. If it seems to fail someone from time to time, it might be an absence of faith. Isn't trust the basis of Faith?I give it 5 big stars. It is a book WAY ahead of its time and a book that makes people in general think. Nothing wrong with that!
