6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Learn the part of you that you never knew! By Daniel P. Camm I have heard of Larry Crabbe before, but I never read this book. We are doing a Home Study with a group of our friends. From the first page, the truth of what Larry is saying hit me. This is almost a page-turner book. You will discover the core of you that you never knew.

Needs more balance By PTD There are some worthwhile spiritual lessons (or disciplines) discussed here, but I couldn't agree with his central contention regarding the primacy of an 'inside out' self examination (or that it must come as a sort of 'dark night of the soul' experience). Despite the updates for the 25th anniversary edition, his focus on sexual sin - and especially his handling of women in that context, will infuriate many, and is, in my opinion, seriously flawed. Overall, for evangelicals, I would say it is also a bit weak on the Biblical backing for many of his claims. And as he himself notes in the last added chapter, it is heavy on 'gloom' and short on 'joy.' Reactions to and the usefulness of this book will be highly individual, I think.

For someone who cannot find satisfaction and thereby seeks to cover up hurt, this is a great way to be brought back to considering what it means to pursue relationship with God as well as how to have strength when all of life seems to be falling apart around you. Great for discipleship and counseling. Great too if want to be like Job in the face of trials.
