About the Author C. Walker Gollar is a professor of Catholic history and theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He holds a Ph.D. in historical theology from the University of Saint Michael’s College, Toronto; an M.A. in theological studies from the University of Dayton; and a B.S. in psychology from Xavier University. He has published extensively in academic journals and historical publications, and speaks widely on topics relevant to both history and Catholicism.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great academic start that weakens into an apologist piece for progressive Catholicism By Dcn. Brandon Bredice- Justice Gollar's early research is impeccable; a more than commendable effort tracking the genesis of Catholics in Maryland, the exodus to Bardstown and the dioceses that sprang forth and exploded from humble, albeit at times immoral beginnings. Gollar's book doesn't pull any punches when it comes to slave owning and trading especially among the early Jesuits and identifies the 'secondary' type of slavery where education, baptism and catechesis stood out within the evil institution. Unfortunately, Gollar should have stopped writing right around chapter ten when his excellent balanced research begins to turn into a progressive bias and by the start of chapter 12 you find yourself wondering where and how this turned into an agenda piece. If you understand the church as suffering from vocations, held back by a bastion of traditionalists like John Paul & Benedict and celebrate ideas like optional celibacy and the power of 'nuns on the bus' you'll love his 20th century conclusions. My suggestion is to stop after chapter 9 and switch to "American Church" by Russell Shaw for a deeper understanding especially of contemporary Catholicism in America.
