What Does It Take to Play Master-Level Chess? Becoming a master is a goal many chessplayers seek. And for most, it is an unfulfilled dream. Now, for the first time, the topic is squarely addressed. Not by a super grandmaster or high-powered international master, but by a "regular" national master, a master who earned his stripes in the trenches, battling his way to the title. In Reaching the Top?!, author Peter Kurzdorfer shares his journey to the coveted 2200 Elo mark. Using his own games, major topics covered by the author include: Learning From Past Mistakes; Choose Openings to Suit Your Style; Handling Material Inequality; Practical Endgames; How Sound Do Your Openings Need to Be?; When Things Go Terribly Wrong; Overcoming Difficulties; and How to Win. This guide shows what it takes to play at the master level. What you need to know. What you do not need to know. It is a a practical presentation that will not only help aspiring masters, but in fact any player seeking to improve his game. So come on in and sit by the side of a chess master as he plies his craft, marveling at the wonderful, intricate combinations and positional ideas and shuddering at the opportunities that supposedly strong chess players missed time and time again. Enjoy these every-day, blue-collar battles that do not involve the cutting edge of theory or top professional combatants, but do come out of ordinary amateur chess players who have made it work for them. However, there is one requirement: you do have to love the game and give it your best shot, every game, every move. Mix in some discipline and concentration, and you too may be able to play master-level chess...

This is a good thing, however, as the author thus has deep, personal insights into why the moves were played! It is not often any chess author is so willing to be transparent enough to admit he was just stupid or blind (as we amateurs so often are!). You will find many of his losses and balance of his games with White and Black, something else a bit unusual in chess biographies. He begins with one of the keys to his climbing the rating mountain--- his understanding of ugly Pawn positions are not so deadly as most of us untitled players think. The balancing force, he proves, is active piece play. This leads to a chapter on how he chose his favorite opening systems--by those which generate odd Pawn structures. After studying piece play, he can move onto topics of sacrifice and material imbalance. The reader thus understands these heavier topics as piece play rules ! ...even in endgames (as he discusses). In all fairness, I am still working my way through (about half there), but just wanted to let you know that I think this will become a classic. Peter's openness to explaining his errors and humour in reminding us that even Masters are also accident prone (they just don't let it happen as much) reminded me (a USCF ~2000) that active pieces with specific goals cause those accidents !If there is a negative, I noticed early on a few typos (they jump out at me). As they piled up, I began recording them so as to send to the publisher. Half way through, I have a list of a couple dozen. But only a few caused me any time to figure what was intended.

Kurzdorfer achieves an amazing, helpful By Jun Barrack "Throw away your ego in order to get on the path to understanding"Mr. Kurzdorfer achieves an amazing, helpful, insightful chess book by lowering his guard and striking at the core of playing chess! I am rated 1500-1600 USCF and a High-functioning Asperger's player. I am constantly on the search for useful books which will aide my goal of becoming the best player I can become, and "Reaching the Top?!" hits the mark!. It is quite apparent that a huge amount of time, effort, and insight have gone into this chess tome and I am personally impressed that it is available for us neophytes to learn from. The book will work at many levels, especially for those personalities of the Intuitive nature, looking for the deeper meaning of things. Many stones of knowledge line the pathway of insight, Webb, Silman, Euwe, Watson, etc. and Mr. Kurzdorfer's newest book, "Reaching the Top?!" takes it's rightful place in helping me achieve my personal goals in chess and I hope that it becomes a corner stone of chess knowledge on a very short list of useful resources!
