“In short, this study is a welcome contribution to the field and will make an excellent textbook for the classroom.”  (Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, 1 October 2015)

Review

Professors Deal and Ruppert offer a detailed account of the rich diversity of Japanese Buddhist traditions from the sixth century to the present, paying close attention to social context. This comprehensive volume draws together the most recent developments in scholarship for each historical period and redresses many of the gaps in prior overviews. It will serve for years to come as a welcome introduction to students and a valuable reference for specialists.Jacqueline Stone, Princeton University

From the Back Cover

A Cultural History of Japanese Buddhism presents a vivid, nuanced, and chronological account of Buddhist religion in Japan, from its emergence in the sixth century right through to the present day. Authors William Deal and Brian Ruppert, both experts on Japanese religions, explore each period of Japanese history to reveal the complex and often controversial histories of Japanese Buddhists and their unfolding narratives.

Incorporating the most recent Japanese and Western scholarship, the book explores the contexts that made possible the introduction of Buddhist texts and images in the sixth century; traces their development through the Nara and early Heian eras; and reveals the increasing influence of Buddhism into the Kamakura Era. It addresses the increasing competition between Buddhist, Shinto, and Neo-Confucian world-views through to the mid-19th century, and following Japan's emergence as a world power, explores Buddhist thought and practice from World War II through to the present day. Offering readers more than a simple historical review, the authors also reveal the seemingly contradictory ways that Japanese people are able to draw upon Buddhist ideas to help create a more meaningful world, whilst at the same time justifying multiple and competing perspectives. With scholarly precision, A Cultural History of Japanese Buddhism offers an illuminating glimpse into the evolution of a complex and often misunderstood religious tradition.

By Seth Zuihō Segall I am writing this review from the point of view of a Zen practitioner who is neither a student nor scholar of Japanese history. This book is a brief (250 pages, not counting glossary and index) overview of the history of Japanese Buddhism from protohistory to today within the broader context of political, historical, and cultural developments on the Japanese islands. It is up to date in terms of its coverage of contemporary scholarly issues and debates, as well as topics of contemporary interest (e.g., the status of women in Buddhism). It's the kind of book where Zen ancestors like Dogen and Hakuin may get only a page of so of mention-- so don't expect it to deepen your knowledge of Zen, per se. Where is excels, for readers like me, is in putting movements like Zen into the context of the broader trends of Japanese history -- how kami worship was integrated into Buddhism, how the modern emphasis on funerary Buddhism developed, how the Meiji Restoration affected the direction of Buddhist thought, etc. As a survey, the book does not spend too much time on any of these issues, so if you have an interest in a particular era you will not find your interest covered in any great depth, although each chapter has suggestions for further readings. Instead, you will get the broad sweep of history. On the other hand, the reader who knows very little about Japanese history may find himself/herself lost at times, because the book expects the reader will know something about major Japanese historical events like the political upheavals involving dynastic succession and warlord conflict. I found myself stopping every now and then to consult Wikipedia along the way. I can't think of another contemporary book that covers this topic in this kind of breadth, and my main complaint is that the book wasn't thicker and deeper and covered more territory. This book does a good job of introducing the reader to the sheer profusion and variety of Japanese Buddhisms, however, and understanding how uniquely Japanese history and concerns shaped the way Buddhism was expressed within Japan.
