During the Second World War (1939-1945) Krishnamurti did not speak publicly in the United States but lived quietly in Ojai, CA. People sought him out and came to dialogue with him on many issues of the times or their own personal dilemmas. Their problems were universal human problems and each made true his statement “You are the world”. As Krishnamurti unwound the tight threads of their thinking and feeling the core or source of a concern was revealed unadorned and without blame or guilt. Krishnamurti’s recollection and documentation of these dialogues were gathered from his notebooks and compiled in this book. "There is only reality, the supreme without a second. There is only one humanity and one righteousness, and the way to its realization does not lie through any other path, through any other person save through yourself. Seek your own deliverance, and then you will deliver the world from its confusion and conflict, its sorrow and antagonism. For you are the world, and your problem is the world's problem. If you are clinging to your beliefs, to your petty gods, to your nationality, to your possessions, to your leaders, then you will create a world of confusion and conflict, of sects, of racial and religious prejudices, of economic and ideological frontiers, ever leading to separation, breeding ill will, multiplying catastrophes. One has to put aside these superficial things, these distractions, these self-deluding indulgences, and cultivate right thinking. Right thinking comes through self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is not based on any formula; but through constant awareness of our thoughts and feelings, of actions and reactions, and of all the opposites that lie within us, comes self-knowledge, from which arises right thinking, right understanding[…] In understanding oneself, there is the comprehension of the whole." - J. Krishnamurti

About the Author Jiddu Krishnamurti lived from 1895 to 1986, and is regarded as one of the greatest philosophical and spiritual figures of the twentieth century. He was first discovered by the Theosophists on a beach in South India in 1910 at the age of 13 and was educated to be the new “World Teacher” for the ages. Then he took an extraordinary turn. In 1929, at one of the enormous annual European gatherings of the Theosophists in Holland, he announced his decision to step down from any formal role to promote him as a World Teacher, resigned as figure head of the Theosophists, and cut all ties to any notion of a religious or spiritual organization.Krishnamurti claimed no allegiance to any caste, nationality or religion and was bound by no tradition. His purpose was to set humankind unconditionally free from the destructive limitations of a conditioned mind. For nearly sixty years, he traveled the world and spoke spontaneously to large audiences until the end of his life in 1986 at the age of 90. He had no permanent home, but when not traveling, he often stayed in Ojai, California, Brockwood Park, England, and in Chennai, India. In his talks, he pointed out to people the need to transform themselves through self knowledge, by being aware of the subtleties of their thoughts and feelings in daily life, and how this movement can be observed through the mirror of relationship.

Very Disappointing By David J Harvey This book is so different than any other book I have read of Jiddu Krishnamurti that it leads me to believe that someone took far to great a liberty in making it seem current and approachable that they, in many places, changed the meaning of Krishnamurti's hyper consistent intent. There are area's in this book that seem contradictory to any other book that I have read and the language seems too flowery to be straight from Krishnamurti's mouth. I would skip this book altogether and go to First and Last Freedom, A Light Unto Oneself, Awakening of Intelligence...or any other book written prior to The World Within. A tremendous disappointment.

An Invaluable Addition By David Walker This book is an invaluable addition to the Krishnamurti literature as it consists of reports of interviews he gave during the Second World War to individuals who came seeking his help on a wide range of topics. This book predates the Commentaries on Living series, and the style and language is akin to the talks he gave at the Oak Grove in Ojai, California from 1940-1946. A Buddhist scholar once remarked to me that his teachings at this time contained some similarities to Buddhism. He makes the suggestion to his audience - and now readers - that they write down each thought as it occurs so as to slow down the mind, thus enabling each thought to be observed and understood. Such practical suggestions are missing from the later teaching. Also, he seems to go into more details to unravel each problem than he did subsequently. To use the 'wood and trees' analogy, here he seems to be examining the tree in great detail, coming upon the wood at the end of each passage. Later on it was if he were standing back, examining the wood in its entirety from the outset. It seems to me that although the essential substance of the teachings never changed from the 1930s onwards, the emphasis and style did. In the 1930s the teachings were quite philosophically complex, being concerned with such things as the individual's relationship with the environment. In the 1940s - as in this book - the emphasis is more on the importance of self-knowledge which leads to right thinking. For the rest of his life the teachings seemed to expand and deepen, whilst at the same time becoming more direct and simple. But all the way through the essence is the same: The coming upon of the timeless, the eternal.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Krishnamurti's teachings, and his approach to self-knowledge.
