In the Tree Top: A New Lullaby, by Candide Jones

Review Using the well-loved Rock-a-Bye Baby lyrics as their springboard, a writer/editor with a literary-press background and her collaborator, an accomplished watercolorist, have created a pretty new picture book shaped around reassuring verses. Rock-a-bye baby in the tree top / When the wind blows the cradle will rock, / When the bough breaks the cradle will fall, / And down will come baby cradle and all. This traditional lullaby, known to generations (the original rhyme goes back centuries), has long inspired children s authors, music artists and undoubtedly parents and other caregivers to put their own stamp on it. Jones (a writer, editor, and advising assistant director of Wake Forest University Press) and artist Emery contribute to the mix with a combination of tender new verses and delicate watercolor paintings. Jones begins her addition to the familiar rhyme: When the bough breaks / I ll be right there / And I will catch you as you fall through the air. She continues in that soothing vein The world is so big and you are so small, / I ll always hear you whenever you call and ends with this parental affirmation: Trees grow up tall / But love never stops ... / Someday you ll go climbing / To the tree tops! Emery s illustrations, rendered in a soft, cool color palette, provide an opportunity for cozy parent-child interaction, too, guided by Jones back-of-book, seek-and-find list of people and animals to be discovered throughout: p.7 One green hound dog, one baby, p.13 Two hound dogs, two yellow fish, five horses, one mother, one baby, p.21 One big bear, three cats, one bird, one squirrel, two bunnies, one raccoon, and one baby! Do you see the train? A musical performance of Jones new verses, sung by recording artist Laurelyn Dossett, available as a free download, demonstrates the words rhythmic pattern. A notice at the website states that a portion of the book s sales will benefit child-abuse prevention and animal welfare nonprofits. A warmhearted, eye-pleasing new Rock-a-Bye Baby picture book in verse, nicely calibrated for cozy bedtime reading. --Kirkus ReviewsIn a serene adaptation of Rock-a-bye Baby by newcomers Jones and Emery, a mother with flowing red hair lulls her child to sleep with promises of unending comfort, love, and devotion, using the metaphor of tree boughs and branches to suggest the child s continuing growth and independence. Mixing angular shapes and bold colors, Emery s watercolors show the mother catching her baby as he falls from a treetop: When the bough breaks, I ll be right there./ And I will catch you as you fall through the air. As the song continues, the images become a dreamscape: a mountainlike formation takes on the characteristics of a bear, with other woodland animals camouflaged in the leafy greenery (an afterword invites readers to seek out these and other hidden creatures). Eventually, the baby grows into a shaggy-haired boy: Trees grow up tall/ But love never stops/ Someday you ll go climbing/ To the tree tops! The more surreal imagery can feel jarring alongside the lullabylike aspects of the text, but Jones s steady verse provides a soothing expansion of the familiar lullaby. Ages 4 8. (BookLife) --Publishers WeeklyParents who enjoy singing to their little ones at bedtime will welcome this new extended version of Rock-a-Bye Baby. The new words feel familiar and nurturing. Parents who enjoy reading bedtime stories will delight in the creatively whimsical watercolor illustrations that depict the two sentence stanzas on every double-page. Small eyes and fingers will delight in finding and pointing out the many hidden humans and animals that disguise themselves seamlessly into the nature-filled renderings. Emery is a talented watercolor artist and his smooth and flowing brushstrokes, as well as his choice of colors, create a delightful ambiance that is just right for a relaxing nighttime reading session…. [T]his is a beautiful retelling of a beloved lullaby that has been created with a lot of heart. --The Children's Book Rview

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. in her book In the Tree Top has redone the song with gentler words- words that comfort and blanket the baby in maternal love and By ramcb As a child, the song Rock-a-bye Baby didn't really scare me but rather perplexed me. Aside from the fact of it being incredibly dangerous, who would be crazy enough to go to the trouble of putting a cradle with a baby in it way up in the top of a tree in the first place? And I did wonder how the little baby fared after having fallen "cradle and all". Today's mothers would probably steer clear of this lullaby altogether but Candide Jones,in her book In the Tree Top has redone the song with gentler words- words that comfort and blanket the baby in maternal love and protection. Her words turn the old lyrics into what really becomes a lullaby that could rock a baby or toddler to sleep. They are soothing and soft and I can see a mother or father with a child in their lap singing or reading this. It reminds me too of The Run Away Bunny whose mother will always be there(whether he wanted her to or not, I always thought).Steve Emery's illustrations are muted pastels that look like they have been gently blown across the page as the cradle was blown-perhaps not so gently- in that tree. He has added the game of finding pictures within his atmospheric pictures. Each page hides secrets for parent and child to discover. His paintings, like Ms. Jones' words, soothe and calm the soul. This is a wonderful book to give to a new mother, father, grandmother or grandfather. Also, I think every preschool and probably every elementary school should own this book. In the Tree Top is a calming safe haven delight.

Not only is her new take on an old lullaby a joy to sing By pl byrd When I was a three-year-old insomniac, the thought of breaking my mother's back by stepping on a crack or falling out of a damn tree used to keep me up at night. I much prefer the softer, more loving sentiments penned by Ms. Jones. Not only is her new take on an old lullaby a joy to sing, but the images are sheer magic. Do yourself and your child a favor: buy this darling book!

But the best part of this book unlike the others I just mentioned, is that it will grow with your child. They will love reading it, singing it and finding the hidden images of animals among the beautiful illustrations. Great gift at Christmas time!!! Enjoy.

Another Catholic classic now on Kindle, “Spiritual Conferences” was published in 1858, the very year Our Lady appeared at Lourdes, France. Written by the celebrated 19th century priest who translated “True Devotion to Mary,” this collection of Fr. Frederick W. Faber’s conferences includes his most famous essays: —"Kindness” (in General, in Thought, Words, and Actions) —"Death” (its aspects, characteristics, how to prepare for it, and a death precious in God’s sight), —"Self-Deceit” (with eight sub-topics: Simplicity, followed by a study on self-deceit, including its source, varieties, characteristics, remedies, and “the place and hour when we become true” to ourselves and, more importantly, to God). —“Why So Little Comes of Frequent Confession” (A Secret of the Spiritual Life We Really Need to Know) —“Weariness in Well-doing” (and How to Overcome It) —“Wounded Feelings” (or---“Getting Over” Ourselves) —“Why Confidence in God is the Only Worship” (and How to Cultivate It) —“Taking Scandal” (or---How to Recognize Our Own Pride) —“A Taste for (Spiritual) Reading---and Its Benefits —“The Monotony of Piety” (and What to Do about It) —“Heaven and Hell” (One or the Other is Our Final Destination) —“All Men Have a Special Vocation” (or---Yes, You Do Have a Purpose in Life!) As Fr. Faber wrote in the Preface of this book, “As these Addresses had neither the formality of Lectures, nor the dignity of Sermons, I have been accustomed to call them Conferences, using the word rather in a foreign than a native sense… There is a sort of general unity in the selection which occupies this Volume, as the Conferences will be found on the whole to apply to matters closely related among themselves, and proper either to one stage of the Spiritual Life, or to stages which have a close affinity with each other. They embody, also, certain views on the relation of grace to natural character, and on what may be called the Natural Side of the Supernatural Life, which I regard as being of considerable importance in these times” —and they are even more important in our own time.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. passive aggressive behavior By Tinay I appreciate the information from this book. It has given insight and definitely helped with understand a few people I know who exhibit these same types of behaviors. I was never able to exactly pinpoint what was going on with these relationships but that I always left feeling so frustrated, mad, and confused. It nearly drove me insane. But after reading this... OMG! It described their (the people I know) behaviors perfectly. I no longer feel so confused but more relieved knowing I can finally see what the heck is going on. (-this behavior really is the perfect crime without definite evidence. If you say something without proof, it makes you look like the crazy one.) I'm definitely going to try out some of these helpful steps. Being around passive aggressive people can literally make you go madddd...

I thought it would give true pointers and tips for situations like when passive aggressive ppl try to manipulate you with the silent treatment and deny covert things they do but it wasn't in here. I really didn't receive any new knowledge and it seemed as if the writer was off in their basic definition/description of passive aggressive ppl. I do not recommend his book to those that want more than an overview.

Matthew’s Gospel contains two discernible missionary mandates, where Christ sent His disciples to two different people groups with two evidently distinct messages. The command of Jesus to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19) is well known and oft repeated by Christians the world over. This missionary mandate has come to be commonly referred to as “the Great Commission.” However, there remains another commission with which the diligent reader of Scripture must come to terms.

Two Commissions: Two Missionary Mandates in Matthew's Gospel, by James I Fazio

Review "In this volume James Fazio wrestles with the puzzling fact that Matthew's Jesus first tells his disciples not to take his message of the kingdom to the Gentiles (10:5) and tells the Canaanite woman that, "I was only sent to the lost sheep" (15:24). Only after his atoning work on the cross does he command the gospel to go to all nations (28:18-20)...Fazio raises important questions that every responsible exegete of the Gospels must engage with. This volume challenged me again to think through these critical issues."Mark Strauss, Professor of New TestamentBethel Seminary, San Diego "James Fazio has produced a brilliantly conceived thesis. While some dispensationalists will not agree with every point in this work, they will acknowledge that Matthew 10 and Matthew 28 are two distinct and different commissions. The commission of Matthew 10 is limited to Israel with a proclamation of the nearness of the kingdom. In Matthew 28 the commission is to go to the world with the message of Christ's completed work on the cross. A very interesting read."Stanley D. Toussaint, Senior Professor EmeritusDallas Theological Seminary"There is a theological fog that rolls in when there is a failure to observe the prominent change that took place part way through Christ's earthly ministry.  One of the issues that is affected by this is Christ's commissions to His apostles. James Fazio's book asks important questions and gives reasonable answers to the two commissions given by the Lord. This book will bring clarity to the gospel record as well as the scriptures that follow. Once again, theological ideas must emerge from solid exegesis rather than imposing its will on the biblical text." Paul Benware, Author / Speaker"James Fazio's effort is to be commended for depth of scholarship, devotion to literal, contextual interpretation of texts, and respect toward those who have wrestled theologically with matters of continuity and discontinuity between Israel and the Church. Both covenant theologians and dispensationalists will profit from this thorough management of the two commissions of Jesus Christ." Brian Moulton, Professor of Biblical Studies San Diego Christian College"Theological dialog between Christians of different traditions is very important. James Fazio, has written a book which helpfully highlights some of the key distinctives of Dispensational and Covenant theology. His work is charitable, and even-handed. As a Reformed Pastor, I commend this book as a gracious and open door to theological discussion!" Adriel Sanchez, Pastor North Park Presbyterian Church

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Solid Scholarship By C. Marsh Fazio has brought to light an issue many scholars try to hide from in Matthew's Gospel: Jesus in fact gave two separate commissions to two separate audiences with two separate messages. This book tackles head on a thorny issue that has garnered controversy from both Dispensational and Covenantal camps. With a balanced treatment respecting both theological positions, Fazio manages to apply unbiased exegesis to Matthew's account (with support from Luke's Gospel) to reach the startling, yet true, conclusion that the majority Jesus' earthly ministry had a different goal and message--distinct from what can mistakenly be applied by today's Church--than His post-resurrection ministry. The fact that the author demonstrates this conclusively in just over 100 pages shows his mastery of Biblical exegesis, and his sympathies toward the busy pastor, scholar, and student who will for sure benefit from this book. Outstanding read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The thoughtful reading of this excellent book can only benefit proponents of both camps By Thomas A. Rohm Professor Fazio has written a comprehensive yet concise exegetical treatment of the two commissions proclaimed by the Lord Jesus Christ in the gospel of Matthew. To whom were the two commissions given, and what were the contents and purposes of each are complex are debatable subjects amongst dispensational and covenantal theologians. Fazio handles these challenging questions in a straightforward and clear manner that never strays from Scripture. Strategically placed quotes from eminent scholars effectively add a dimension to the writing and aid in understanding. The thoughtful reading of this excellent book can only benefit proponents of both camps, as well as any reader seeking to know more about God and His Word.Thomas A. Rohm, Professor of Biblical LanguagesSouthern California Seminary

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Helpful Resource By David Adams I benefited from the content examined within this book. Prof. Fazio does a thorough job of delineating the real distinctions between different commands of Jesus as seen in the Gospel of Matthew. The emphasis of Christians throughout the centuries has been focused on what we know as the Great Commission, found in Matt. 28:19-20. However, we have often minimized and deemphasized the command of Christ seen in Matt. 10:5-7, where He told the disciples to witness about the kingdom of heaven solely to the Jews. Prof. Fazio meticulously examines the context, background, actual commands, implications, etc. of these clearly unique evangelistic mandates. He frequently participates in significant exegesis, which provides a lot of depth to this work.I benefited from Prof. Fazio's thorough examination of a variety of scholars from a broad range of viewpoints. He obviously sought to interact with the strongest positions he could find, instead of simply attempting to find evidence in his own favor. In my opinion (as a dispensationalist), Prof. Fazio did not draw some of the connections that I believe become apparent regarding the nature of Israel within God's plan. However, I do respect his specific focus in this book, and I do think that it makes his case stronger in a sense. He does not use the distinct mandates as a premise for another argument (although I do believe that would be doctrinally valid), but rather simply seeks to incontrovertibly establish a singular point, namely that there are two distinct missionary mandates within Matthew. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone who is researching this topic or is simply interested in learning more about the ministry and message of Jesus Christ. This book does not make a very broad argument, but within the parameters it sets for itself it makes a very powerful and convincing argument. Prof. Fazio balances readability and rich content to provide a tremendous resource for any student of the Bible.Full disclosure: I am in Prof. Fazio's class, and a thorough review of his book is allowed to substitute for a reading evaluation paper. However, Prof. Fazio himself is not the one grading this submission, and this review is being graded for objectivity and thoroughness. I have no compulsion to agree with him, and my perspective is my own.

The lovely colors and wonderous cards are nothing short of spectacular. I shortly after began reading the in depth yet beautiful book that comes with it and fell in love with each card's story and symbolism. The cards are a bit bigger than traditional sets, but it is for the better - I love being able to see the artists style and symbolism on a larger and more detailed scale. If you enjoy the tarot, you will love this product, I know I do!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It is Okay I am NOT "WOWED" by it...gave me headaches using it as a tarot. By Cyn The art of the deck is cool....I think of "tattoo art". However one would have to get use to it for a while if you are using this to do "tarot readings" too many of the art are all over the place and can be confusing for one to give a reading without using the book. I would keep this deck for its art...but that is about it....all the other few reviews here I saw were "Five stars" but unfortunately I was not able to relate or feel all that WOW effect with this deck...This deck will be on my collection but I will not be connecting with it much at all...when I try it is a headache to look at instinctively. AND the price I felt TOO high for this deck...it is okay but to ME definitely NOT worth over $40 and could just not connect with it to use as a TAROT deck.

Novel!Just opened the beautiful box and took a peek inside to see what treasures it held. This is a collector's deck for sure. and I am so glad I treated myself to it. Thank you Jeffrey Donato for your talent. I will write more at a time when I have really delved into this deck. I will say the bookis gorgeous, just incredible. This deck looks like a blast! Treat yourselves, all you tarot afficianados. After working with the beautiful deck I wanted to add to this glowing review. This deck's book is full of explanations for each card plus thereare additional cards bringing the deck to 102 cards in total. I found the descriptions were so poetic and there is a myth created from pageone of the book as a thread throughout the author's deck. Yet, this does not make it easier to read the cards. Blessedly there are also straight- forward meanings for upright and reversal cards. Learning the mythology of this deck would be icing on the cake for me.The cards are very large and so not easy to shuffle and handle. I am not a professional reader so I would prefer using this deck as one to meditate with and upon and be exploring what I see through each incredible and very complex image. The author is a huge fan of comics which is reflected in the cards' beautiful illustations. This is a very bold and daring deck pictorially for me. I accept the challenge!

Shaskey Jr. It's basically a bunch of individual (1 page max) strips about minions in slapstick situations. If you like Minions and short slapstick comics, you'll love the book. The creators of Minions were involved in the process so it definitely has the feel of the Minions. Really enjoyed this!

I purchased this mainly for her to enjoy looking at pictures and to learn about how one reads comic strips. She has been enjoying it quite a bit as we read this together. The overall book is of a high quality. The illustrations are top notch and the stories are cute. I was really impressed with how well the illustrators did in terms of telling the story. There si not much dialogue (of course, they're minions!) beyond a few sounds which the minions make to convey an emotion. I know that as a kid, I would have loved to have had this book. There are so many small details in the drawings which I always enjoyed exploring.

Everything a Beginning Reader Needs in a Book By Deborah Fidelman This book has all the things that early readers need and like: humor, pictures that tell part of the story, just a few words on a page, an easily read font and rhyming. I have kid tested it with several struggling readers, they all loved it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very good learner! By AKB This is a cute book for a beginner reader. My 5 year old really enjoys the rhythm of the book and the characters are very cute! The play on words that rhyme seem to make it easier for little ones to learn to read. Highly recommend!
