In the Tree Top: A New Lullaby, by Candide Jones

Review Using the well-loved Rock-a-Bye Baby lyrics as their springboard, a writer/editor with a literary-press background and her collaborator, an accomplished watercolorist, have created a pretty new picture book shaped around reassuring verses. Rock-a-bye baby in the tree top / When the wind blows the cradle will rock, / When the bough breaks the cradle will fall, / And down will come baby cradle and all. This traditional lullaby, known to generations (the original rhyme goes back centuries), has long inspired children s authors, music artists and undoubtedly parents and other caregivers to put their own stamp on it. Jones (a writer, editor, and advising assistant director of Wake Forest University Press) and artist Emery contribute to the mix with a combination of tender new verses and delicate watercolor paintings. Jones begins her addition to the familiar rhyme: When the bough breaks / I ll be right there / And I will catch you as you fall through the air. She continues in that soothing vein The world is so big and you are so small, / I ll always hear you whenever you call and ends with this parental affirmation: Trees grow up tall / But love never stops ... / Someday you ll go climbing / To the tree tops! Emery s illustrations, rendered in a soft, cool color palette, provide an opportunity for cozy parent-child interaction, too, guided by Jones back-of-book, seek-and-find list of people and animals to be discovered throughout: p.7 One green hound dog, one baby, p.13 Two hound dogs, two yellow fish, five horses, one mother, one baby, p.21 One big bear, three cats, one bird, one squirrel, two bunnies, one raccoon, and one baby! Do you see the train? A musical performance of Jones new verses, sung by recording artist Laurelyn Dossett, available as a free download, demonstrates the words rhythmic pattern. A notice at the website states that a portion of the book s sales will benefit child-abuse prevention and animal welfare nonprofits. A warmhearted, eye-pleasing new Rock-a-Bye Baby picture book in verse, nicely calibrated for cozy bedtime reading. --Kirkus ReviewsIn a serene adaptation of Rock-a-bye Baby by newcomers Jones and Emery, a mother with flowing red hair lulls her child to sleep with promises of unending comfort, love, and devotion, using the metaphor of tree boughs and branches to suggest the child s continuing growth and independence. Mixing angular shapes and bold colors, Emery s watercolors show the mother catching her baby as he falls from a treetop: When the bough breaks, I ll be right there./ And I will catch you as you fall through the air. As the song continues, the images become a dreamscape: a mountainlike formation takes on the characteristics of a bear, with other woodland animals camouflaged in the leafy greenery (an afterword invites readers to seek out these and other hidden creatures). Eventually, the baby grows into a shaggy-haired boy: Trees grow up tall/ But love never stops/ Someday you ll go climbing/ To the tree tops! The more surreal imagery can feel jarring alongside the lullabylike aspects of the text, but Jones s steady verse provides a soothing expansion of the familiar lullaby. Ages 4 8. (BookLife) --Publishers WeeklyParents who enjoy singing to their little ones at bedtime will welcome this new extended version of Rock-a-Bye Baby. The new words feel familiar and nurturing. Parents who enjoy reading bedtime stories will delight in the creatively whimsical watercolor illustrations that depict the two sentence stanzas on every double-page. Small eyes and fingers will delight in finding and pointing out the many hidden humans and animals that disguise themselves seamlessly into the nature-filled renderings. Emery is a talented watercolor artist and his smooth and flowing brushstrokes, as well as his choice of colors, create a delightful ambiance that is just right for a relaxing nighttime reading session…. [T]his is a beautiful retelling of a beloved lullaby that has been created with a lot of heart. --The Children's Book Rview

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. in her book In the Tree Top has redone the song with gentler words- words that comfort and blanket the baby in maternal love and By ramcb As a child, the song Rock-a-bye Baby didn't really scare me but rather perplexed me. Aside from the fact of it being incredibly dangerous, who would be crazy enough to go to the trouble of putting a cradle with a baby in it way up in the top of a tree in the first place? And I did wonder how the little baby fared after having fallen "cradle and all". Today's mothers would probably steer clear of this lullaby altogether but Candide Jones,in her book In the Tree Top has redone the song with gentler words- words that comfort and blanket the baby in maternal love and protection. Her words turn the old lyrics into what really becomes a lullaby that could rock a baby or toddler to sleep. They are soothing and soft and I can see a mother or father with a child in their lap singing or reading this. It reminds me too of The Run Away Bunny whose mother will always be there(whether he wanted her to or not, I always thought).Steve Emery's illustrations are muted pastels that look like they have been gently blown across the page as the cradle was blown-perhaps not so gently- in that tree. He has added the game of finding pictures within his atmospheric pictures. Each page hides secrets for parent and child to discover. His paintings, like Ms. Jones' words, soothe and calm the soul. This is a wonderful book to give to a new mother, father, grandmother or grandfather. Also, I think every preschool and probably every elementary school should own this book. In the Tree Top is a calming safe haven delight.

Not only is her new take on an old lullaby a joy to sing By pl byrd When I was a three-year-old insomniac, the thought of breaking my mother's back by stepping on a crack or falling out of a damn tree used to keep me up at night. I much prefer the softer, more loving sentiments penned by Ms. Jones. Not only is her new take on an old lullaby a joy to sing, but the images are sheer magic. Do yourself and your child a favor: buy this darling book!

But the best part of this book unlike the others I just mentioned, is that it will grow with your child. They will love reading it, singing it and finding the hidden images of animals among the beautiful illustrations. Great gift at Christmas time!!! Enjoy.
