The Vedic culture is accepted by numerous scholars as one of the most sophisticated civilizations to appear after the last glacial period of 12,000 years ago. It developed in ancient India, and as the people populated the region, they also expanded and spread into other parts of the planet, taking much of their culture with them. This book takes us on a journey through history and across many countries as we point out similarities and remnants of the Vedic tradition that remain there to this day. These include forms of art, philosophy, religion, architecture, temples, ways of living, and so on. Such countries include: Nepal, Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Africa, the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Central Asia, Greece, Italy, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Scandinavia, the Americas, and more. This book also explains: * How many religions in the world have features that clearly descended from the oldest form of spiritual knowledge and truth as found in Vedic Dharma. * How Vedic Dharma is still relevant today and can help establish peace through its timeless spiritual wisdom. * It also helps unravel and reveal the true nature of the Vedic civilization, and how and why it infiltrated and contributed to so many areas and cultures of the world. * It also shows a mysterious side of history that few others have recognized. This book will help anyone understand how the advanced nature of the Vedic civilization and its universal spiritual principles fit into the development of so many other cultures and still contributes to the upliftment of society today. This book is the follow-up of a previous volume called "Proof of Vedic Culture’s Global Existence," but with completely different information and resources, as well as updates, written in a more academic style, using hundreds of references, quotes and notes to verify all the information that is used.

Stephen my son you have rendered yeoman service to Sanatan Dharma and the Vedic World . From 1966 my guru Purushottam Nagesh Oak wrote about Taj Mahal being an erstwhile Rajput Palace and how Vedic culture shines through the layers of civilization. I see how Stephen has been inspired by his work. In particular Stephen has put on the internet all the photographs of how the Taj Mahal has seven storeys, sealed areas, hidden chambers etc etc and he has brilliantly followed in the footsteps of Oak jee and his mind blowing work " Word Vedic Heritage. God bless you Stephen. But wait there is more. He details how the Mayan constructions like Macchu Picchu are fundamentally Vedic structures relying on the ancient Vedic Text of Architecture or our Shilpa Shastra.. and further he details how Chitzen Itsa is laid out in the Vedic Feng Shui or Vastu principles.. so you have three Modern Wonders of the World Taj Mahal, Macchu Picchu and Chitzen Itsa all Vedic structures.. The Distance from Me to You, by Marina Gessner

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—McKenna Berney and her BFF Courtney made a pact to defer college for a year to hike the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. When Courtney bails on her, McKenna is determined to face the challenge alone. With miles of practice hikes under her belt, and top-notch gear, the protagonist sets off on her journey. While on the trail, McKenna meets Sam, who is a high school dropout and on the run from his abusive father. Their friendship quickly evolves into romance. Their journey on the trail is rigorous, with miles of choppy terrain and limited supplies until they reach a local town along the route. When Sam has the idea to go off the trail, something rule-following McKenna would never consider, she gives in, thinking it will be an adventure. That decision puts their love and survival skills to the test. Gessner's debut novel speaks volumes about what it means to truly survive in the wilderness, both alone and with the one you love. Situations including wild animal confrontations, starvation, dehydration, and near death are addressed with authenticity. The panic and fear that set in when they lose their way will strike a nerve with hikers and nonhikers alike. Gessner handles dishonesty (McKenna's parents think that Courtney is with her), first sexual experience, and survival with the utmost sensitivity, shedding light on the range of human emotions. VERDICT A great add to YA collections, especially for those with a taste for the outdoors.—Erin Holt, Williamson County Public Library, Franklin, TN

Review Praise for The Distance from Me to You"A wilderness adventure dashed with romance and danger . . . readers should find it easy to relate to McKenna’s desire to take risks, prove her independence, and finish the trail at all costs."--Publishers Weekly "Gessner writes vividly of the trail and hiking . . . She brings McKenna and Sam to life as well-rounded characters, gradually building their relationship to a satisfying and realistic level. The star of the show here, however, is the Appalachian Trail and the adventures the teens experience on it.Good romance, great wilderness."--Kirkus Reviews"Readers will enjoy the compelling, well-paced depiction of the adventure and lore of the AT, and they will be glad to find such a tough-minded, capable heroine in a realistic novel."--BCCB" A great add to YA collections, especially for those with a taste for the outdoors."--SLJ"[Gessner] has created a romance and adventure tale in one."--VOYA"This story combines adventure and romance in a great read, especially for anyone with an interest in hiking. Readers will enjoy this page-turner.."--School Library Connection

By Book Addict The Distance from Me to You, by Marina Gessner, is the story of McKenna, a girl who decides to put off college for a year so she can hike the Appalachian Trail. Having grown up hearing her father's stories about how hiking changed his life, she decides this is a challenge she has to prove to herself she can accomplish. But when her best friend Courtney backs out to stay with her boyfriend, McKenna decides to take the long, dangerous trip by herself.I picked this book up because I love survival stories, especially ones about long hikes, having read Wild and A Walk in the Woods years ago. After reading this one, I have to say it really exceeded my expectations, especially for a YA survival story. I absolutely loved it! Too much contemporary YA centers around romance, or female characters giving things up for boyfriends. This one is just the opposite. Although there is a love story, it takes a back page to the story of McKenna finding herself, and her own convictions. The one time she veers from her own judgement to his, disaster strikes and she learns another valuable lesson. There are very strong feminist themes here, as well as coming of age, and the overall message is a very positive one for young girls: trust yourself. The characters in this book were amazing too. Given the solitary nature of the hike, they are few and far between, but I loved McKenna dearly. She was tough and strong, a perfect YA heroine. I didn't really like Sam at all, but his character was realistic and believable. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I was glad for how things ended up. I think it really strengthened the novel, particularly given his role in everything that happens. So overall, I give this book a solid 5/5 stars, highly recommended. It was perfectly paced and had me on the edge of my seat, eager to find out how it would all end up. This book really made me want to get outdoors, appreciate life more, take risks, do some hiking, read Walden…. and really, there is nothing better than a book that inspires you to do more. I'm still thinking about it a few days after finishing!! I can't believe it doesn't have more reviews on here…please, go and pick this one up!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Slow to start and didn't QUITE get into it but enjoyed the ending a lot! By Brittany I don’t know if I’d go as far as saying I’m a nature girl but I’m definitely a camping girl! I used to go all the time with my family and now my husband and I go camping several times a year, always enjoying backwoods/primitive camping. When I heard about THE DISTANCE FROM ME TO YOU and how it took place on the Appalachian Trail, I knew I had to pick it up! Thanks to Penguin Teen, I obtained a review copy and immediately tore in!THE DISTANCE FROM ME TO YOU was a really interesting book and it really made me think back on what kind of person I was at McKenna’s age. I definitely didn’t have the determination to do something like make a full hike from Maine to Georgia on the Appalachian Trail and I really didn’t have her drive. (I also wonder if I even have that drive as an adult.) It was so great to see McKenna’s determination to achieve her goals and I really admired how much it meant to her! That being said, I also think it’s kind of crazy to allow two seventeen-year-old girls to make that trip much less witnessing McKenna doing it by herself… Though I guess that was a serious point the book was making! Many people along the trail wrote McKenna off as too young or because she was a girl hiking the trail alone and immediately assumed she needed help or couldn’t do it on her own. It was a really interesting thing to think about. If that was my kid, there’s no way I would allow them to go on that trip at seventeen — with or without a friend, male or female. I remember how I was at seventeen and I don’t think I was immature but I think that’s a really, really big thing for a teenager to take on. Like, I don’t know if I’d be ready for that now. We go camping and it’s a pretty big deal to make sure we make the proper preparations for possibly injuries, encounters with animals, and having enough food and drink. Having some of that knowledge already made it hard at times to see McKenna flounder or flub when it came to some camping and/or survival basics. Then again, she’s also pretty much staying on a trail and not venturing off into the woods so chances are that she wouldn’t run into too many actual survival situations.Aside from experience in the wilderness, the book also addressed McKenna taking this trip as a young female on her own. I am all for girl power and McKenna taking this trip head on by herself and I loved how empowering it was too… But I wouldn’t want anyone to go on this trip alone. That’s a very long way and a very long time to be away from home if something happens — whether that’s animal or human encounter — and you open yourself up to those dangers by where you are and what you’re doing, it’s incredibly important to have someone by your side (and again, male or female, I don’t care. It’s always best to do things like this with a buddy, especially if you don’t have that experience yet). It just really made me put myself in that situation and wonder how I would do and what I might encounter. It was a great experience to put myself in McKenna’s shoes! The book was in third person but focused strongly on McKenna for a few chapters until Sam’s POV popped into the book about 50 pages in! I was surprised and a little thrown to have a new focus but also excited because sometimes multiple POVs really bring something special to a book. I was really glad to have gotten to know Sam throughout the book from his perspective and I think that really helped me connect to him as a character! The book overall was a good read for me but never quite hit amazing like I had hoped. The first quarter of the book felt like a lot of telling. There were a lot of details about McKenna on the trail but nothing was quite happening yet. Things started to pick up once Sam came onto the scene and then there was more of a dialogue going instead of just McKenna’s actions and thoughts. I felt like the book had a steady pace from then on and really started to take off after the first hundred pages. It took a while for me to warm up to it but I really enjoyed the second half and the ending quite a bit!I was very on and off with the romance. I was really excited for McKenna and Sam to meet and I really enjoyed watching them get to know each other. Being two people hiking the trail solo, the ended up spending a lot of time together once they joined up but it also felt a bit awkward how quickly things escalated. I suppose being out there on your own and only having one other person as a constant companion really can do that for you but as much as I love camping and hiking, it’s not very sexy as you’re living it so it didn’t feel like a sexy situation when things started to heat up.I really, really enjoyed how the book ended and it really pulled everything together for me. I wasn’t sure how everything was going to conclude (after a very suspenseful few chapters, I might add!) and how these two people from very different places would stay together… or drift apart. I was trying to think of a happy ending that allowed both characters to pursue their dreams, continue on with life, and not separate at the end of this journey, leaving me (and probably other readers) on a sad note. I won’t reveal how it wraps up but I really thought Marina Gessner did a great job tying it all together! I was very impressed.THE DISTANCE FROM ME TO YOU didn’t quite pan out like I had expected but it was good read overall! Some things didn’t quite live up to what I was hoping and others exceeded my expectations to even out to an overall good book. I think a problem I have with books taking place in the wilderness/camping is a personal issue — it’s more fun for me to live it than read it! — so as much as I love it, maybe it’s not a subject I should continue to seek out in my reading. I hope readers enjoy McKenna’s journey as much as I did! I thought it was well-done and it really made me reflect on my own experiences all throughout the book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An exhilarating journey of self-discovery By K. Branfield The Distance from Me to You by Marina Gessner is an exhilarating journey of self-discovery for lead protagonist McKenna Berney. A six month hike on the Appalachian Trial for the recent high school grad leads to romance but it is what she learns about herself that makes the novel such a wonderful read.Having grown up hearing her father’s stories about hiking the Pacific Northwest Trial, McKenna is determined to undergo a similar hike before beginning college. She and her close friend Courtney have been planning their trip for the past year, but at the last minute, Courtney backs out after reuniting with her boyfriend. Undeterred and determined to go through with the 2000 mile hike, McKenna keeps the change in plans from her parents and strikes out on her own.McKenna is pretty mature for her age and she has extensively researched her upcoming hike and she has carefully planned her daily hikes and stops. However, her trip is off to a bit of rocky beginning after she overestimates her abilities and underestimates the initial segment of the rugged terrain. Quickly regrouping, she soon hits her stride and she basks in the solitude and splendor of the trail. McKenna also seizes the opportunity to unplug from modern technology and greatly limits her use of the cell phone she brought along for safety’s sake. Despite her ability to take care of herself, McKenna is a little naive and in spite of her forethought and preparations, she is unable to plan for every contingency which leads to some ill-thought out decisions along the way.On the trail, McKenna crosses paths with Sam Tilghman, a runaway who is hiking the trail after running away from his abusive father. He successfully hikes to his brother’s house in Maine, but upon discovering his brother is following in their father’s footsteps, Sam decides to hit the trail again. He and McKenna hike independently for part of the trip but eventually a romance begins after they decide to become travel partners. Their different strengths help compensate for their individual weaknesses but trouble ensues when McKenna allows him to talk her into going off trail. The Distance from Me to You is a marvelous adventure and Marina Gessner brings the Appalachian Trial vibrantly to life. The romance between McKenna and Sam is very sweet but it is the valuable lessons they each learn that makes the novel such a worthwhile read. McKenna learns the hard way to trust her instincts and she emerges from the journey with the strength and self-confidence to make some tough decisions about her future. All in all, a very compelling and fascinating contemporary young adult novel that readers of all ages will enjoy.I received a complimentary copy for review.

If, as Buddhism claims, the potential for awakening exists in all human beings, we should be able to map the phenomenon with the same science we apply to other forms of consciousness. A student of cognitive social science and a Zen practitioner for more than forty years, Richard P. Boyle brings his sophisticated perspective to bear on the development of a theoretical model for both ordinary and awakened consciousness.

Boyle conducts probing interviews with eleven prominent Western Buddhist teachers (Shinzen Young, John Tarrant, Ken McLeod, Ajahn Amaro, Martine Batchelor, Shaila Catherine, Gil Fronsdal, Stephen Batchelor, Pat Enkyo O'Hara, Bernie Glassman, and Joseph Goldstein) and one scientist (James Austin) who have experienced awakening. From the paths they traveled to enlightenment and their descriptions of the experience, he derives three fundamental properties of awakened consciousness. He then constructs an overarching model that explains how Buddhist practices help free the mind from attachments to reality and the self and make possible the three properties of awakening. Specifically, these teachers describe how they worked to control attention and quiet the mind, detach from ideas and habits, and open themselves to compassion. Boyle's account incorporates current theories of consciousness, sociological insights, and research in neuroscience to advance the study of awakened consciousness and help an even greater number of people to realize it.

Realizing Awakened Consciousness: Interviews with Buddhist Teachers and a New Perspective on the Mind, by Richard P. Boyle

Review

If Buddhism is to realize its liberative potential in the modern world, we need to learn a lot more about the nature of awakening. This book is an important step in that direction. Boyle's interviews with well-known Western teachers are insightful (sometimes fascinating) in themselves, and the conclusions that he draws from them are a significant contribution to our understanding of contemplative traditions.

(David Loy, author of A New Buddhist Path: Enlightenment, Evolution, and Ethics in the Modern World)

'Awakening,' as described and practiced in Buddhism, Boyle shows, is a process that is real and can be appraised in scientific terms.

(Anthony Giddens, London School of Economics)

When meditators have an 'awakening,' what is it really like? Richard P. Boyle interviewed eleven Western Buddhist teachers to find out, and we get to read their accounts in their own words. Then, drawing on these interviews and on scientific research, Boyle offers an innovative view of how awakening happens and how it can transform each of us.

(Paula England, New York University, and president, American Sociological Association)

In addition to the interviews with well-known American Buddhist teachers, which form the heart of this book and make fascinating reading in themselves, Boyle develops a provocative frame of reference for understanding and discussing philosophically the meaning of some common features he identifies in the interviews, regarding the form of consciousness generally referred as 'awakening.'

(David Preston, San Diego State University, author of Constructing Trans-Cultural Reality: The Social Organization of Zen Practice)

More than any book I have read, it left me optimistic that awakened consciousness is not some myth but an attainable human potential.

(PsycCritiques)

About the Author Richard P. Boyle was an associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, until 1972, when he left to pursue his studies in Buddhism in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Some years later, he moved to Albuquerque and worked as a senior research scientist at the University of New Mexico's Institute for Social Research. He is currently continuing the research reported in this book and extending the theoretical model.

By Bev Magennis The interviews in this book are so honest, and told in the most conversational, straightforward manner, I could not put the book down. The teachers' commitments to observing and disciplining the mind in order to achieve expanded states of awareness involves a lifetime of study and devotion. Each one has achieved insight and humility through decades of abandonment to their practices. The interviews opened my mind to the essence of meditation and the benefits of a lifetime of practice. Boyle's scientific analysis and summation, as well a his own meditation process, offer unique insight to the workings of the mind, as well as categorizing phenomena experienced in meditation. He makes a strong argument for quieting the mind in order to move forward as a society into a world free of stress. I am a non-Buddhist who found this book extremely well-written, fascinating and informative.

PDF Ebook Maimonides: Life and Thought, by Moshe Halbertal

Maimonides was the greatest Jewish philosopher and legal scholar of the medieval period, a towering figure who has had a profound and lasting influence on Jewish law, philosophy, and religious consciousness. This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to his life and work, revealing how his philosophical sensibility and outlook informed his interpretation of Jewish tradition.

Moshe Halbertal vividly describes Maimonides's childhood in Muslim Spain, his family's flight to North Africa to escape persecution, and their eventual resettling in Egypt. He draws on Maimonides's letters and the testimonies of his contemporaries, both Muslims and Jews, to offer new insights into his personality and the circumstances that shaped his thinking. Halbertal then turns to Maimonides's legal and philosophical work, analyzing his three great books--Commentary on the Mishnah, the Mishneh Torah, and the Guide of the Perplexed. He discusses Maimonides's battle against all attempts to personify God, his conviction that God's presence in the world is mediated through the natural order rather than through miracles, and his locating of philosophy and science at the summit of the religious life of Torah. Halbertal examines Maimonides's philosophical positions on fundamental questions such as the nature and limits of religious language, creation and nature, prophecy, providence, the problem of evil, and the meaning of the commandments.

A stunning achievement, Maimonides offers an unparalleled look at the life and thought of this important Jewish philosopher, scholar, and theologian.

Review Winner of the 2013 National Jewish Book Award in Scholarship, Jewish Book CouncilHonorable Mention for the 2015 PROSE Award in Theology & Religious Studies, Association of American PublishersOne of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2014"In his rigorous and insightful study Maimonides: Life and Thought, Moshe Halbertal reintroduces readers to this rabbi-scientist, who insisted that faith should be an enterprise based on reason."--Dara Horn, Wall Street Journal"[M]agisterial. . . . Halbertal presents a moving and detailed portrait of Maimonides's life as well as his work. . . . Maimonides is not just a titan of Jewish learning; as Halbertal shows in his timely and definitive book, he can be a surprisingly contemporary guide for our times."--David Mikics, Forward"[Halbertal] pioneers a new path, walking the reader through the different interpretive schools and explaining what supports each one while acknowledging that Maimonides contradicts himself both across and within his many writings--at times purposefully, which inevitably leaves his readers perplexed. Halbertal is a wonderful guide, explaining how different approaches illuminate Maimonides' writings and how certain issues reverberate throughout the sage's work, returning in new forms and contexts. . . . Drawing on all of Maimonides' writings, and especially his many letters, Halbertal crafts a portrait of a refugee who never fully left home and felt the pain of exile for his entire life. . . . [An] extraordinary book."--Jay M. Harris, Foreign Affairs"In a sea of literature about the great twelfth-century Jewish sage and philosopher, one could do no better than turn to Moshe Halbertal's single volume work on Maimonides. . . . Accessible to both scholar and interested general reader, this book should be the first work on Maimonides for an English reader to approach."--David Tesler, Association of Jewish Libraries Reviews"If you are going to read only one book about Maimonides, make it Moshe Halbertal's stunning Maimonides. Even if you have read many other books by and about Maimonides, you have much to learn here."--Menachem Kellner, AJS Review"Halbertal's book provides an introduction to the complexity of Maimonides's work, and should be studied by any serious Maimonides scholar."--Tamar Rudavsky, Journal of the History of Philosophy"Maimonides, then, remains an elusive and fascinating figure: his importance is clear, but it's hard to grasp exactly what made him so important. That is why Maimonides: Life and Thought, the new study by Moshe Halbertal, is such a valuable contribution. . . . Readers who are curious about this difficult but rewarding thinker will find Maimonides: Life and Thought a thrillingly lucid introduction."--Adam Kirsch, Barnes & Noble Review"Moshe Halbertal's Maimonides is a useful guide to the man and his work, with something to offer both novice and scholar. . . . [T]his admirable work invites us to study Moses Maimonides' writings on our own."--Mark Blitz, Weekly Standard"Halbertal, a professor of both law and Jewish studies, is equipped to grasp the richness of Maimonides's thought, which reflects a potent blend of rabbinic expertise and philosophical acumen. . . . If Halbertal's book accomplishes nothing else but to inspire this Maimonidean approach to life and religion, then he has done his job well."--James A. Diamond, Jerusalem Post"[S]tudying the Andalusian refugee Maimonides will be revealing and this terrific book by the philosopher Moshe Halbertal is a great place to begin."--Richard Marshall, 3ammagazine.com"This insightful, well-written book offers a fresh perspective on Maimonides. Halbertal offers an excellent introductory overview of Maimonides's life and contributions to Jewish law, philosophy, medicine, and religious consciousness. He also makes clear how Mainmonides's personality, psychology, and evolving outlook penetrate his oeuvre. . . . The author offers a window into the self-perception of this greatest of medieval rabbinic thinkers, physicians, legalists, and theologians, and the radical transformations he sought to effect in Judaism."--Choice"[A] valuable and impressive achievement."--Eric Shoag, Jewish Journal"[A] brilliant tour de force."--Lawrence Kaplan, Jewish Review of Books"In this excellent study, Moshe Halbertal makes it clear, in keeping with Maimonides, that there is no one way to understand the Jewish tradition."--Jude P. Dougherty, Mary Elizabeth Tetzlaff"[A]n unusually comprehensive overview of Maimonides achievements."--Berel Dov Lerner, Religion & Theology

From the Back Cover

"In the gorgeous and rugged terrain of Jewish thought, there is no higher mountain to climb than Maimonides, and no more slippery or exhilarating ascent. Halbertal has made it all the way to the top, and his survey of the whole of the Maimonidean landscape is trustworthy and masterful. This is the richest and most intellectually sophisticated book on Maimonides I have ever read."--Leon Wieseltier

"In this learned and penetrating work, Halbertal offers us a Maimonides who draws on the dominant Greco-Islamic thought of his time while creating a system of thought that is fully Jewish. He shows us how the early Commentary on the Mishnah links up with the Mishneh Torah and with the Guide of the Perplexed, written at the end of his life, to form an unexpected and radical intellectual unity. Beautifully written, Maimonides brings out both Maimonides's intellectual success and the paradoxical critical approaches to him after his death."--David J. Wasserstein, Vanderbilt University

"Insightful and learned. Halbertal is perhaps the leading philosopher of Jewish law today. His book on Maimonides, like his other writings, reflects wide erudition and is written clearly and sharply."--Warren Zev Harvey, professor emeritus, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

"Displaying the marvelous depth and clarity that mark all his work, Halbertal explains in abundant detail the transformations that Maimonides sought to effect in the Jewish world. He provides incisive interpretations of both legal and philosophical writings, yet he is also a biographer, binding together Maimonides's life, self-perception, and intellectual agenda. This is an exceptionally rich book, one that offers fresh perspectives for experts and a highly accessible introduction for general readers."--David Shatz, Yeshiva University

"An outstanding and thrilling portrait of Maimonides. Halbertal's analytic lucidity and psychological depth are singular, and his talents are abundantly apparent on every page. This is an extraordinary book."--Menachem Lorberbaum, Tel Aviv University

About the Author Moshe Halbertal is the Gruss professor of Law at New York University, professor of Jewish thought and philosophy at the Hebrew University, and professor of law at IDC Herzliya in Israel. His books include On Sacrifice and Concealment and Revelation: Esotericism in Jewish Thought and Its Philosophical Implications (both Princeton).

By Debra Hindlemann Webster I suppose it begins with the book jacket, which is elegant, no-nonsense, and straightforward. The content of the book only gets better from there. Mr. Maimon (as I refer to him), happens to be one of my heroes. This volume, which is thorough, laced with appositives and careful elucidating explanations, clearly defines why I feel the way I do.The author is succinct, logical, exceedingly well organized--no doubt Maimonidean himself--and the book, in my opinion, is exquisitely sensitive to Maimon the man, as well as to the philosopher/logician/astronomer/physician. The book covers his entire life in the initial biographical chapter that is about one quarter of the book. The rest of the book is devoted to Maimonides' most significant works--his "Commentary on the Mishneh," "The Commandments," "The Mishneh Torah" and "The Guide for the Perplexed." Halbertal refers to additional compositions; however, the focus of the book is primarily reflective of these--the best, most influential, and most powerful of Maimonides' writings.Maimonides, himself, in addition to his incredible mind, was funny, sarcastic, brash, impatient, rude; in short, he was straightforward to a fault, and had no positive sentiment for the "stupid" or the "foolish," as he referred to them. It is important to note that he was as caring and feeling about those whom he loved, as he was passionate about those whose ire he raised. The author covers all aspects of this extraordinarily gifted gentleman; not infrequently exasperating in his insistence that his way was the right and only way: At one moment, Halbertal actually refers to Maimon's behavior as that of a "harebrained amateur!" (This, to add depth of thought, and chuckles, too, regarding the most profound of all medieval thinkers).I think one has to be a little bit peculiar to relish such a book as this--printed by Princeton, that seems to do a wonderful job of choosing its authors--because Maimonides in today's world, by many would be deemed as somewhat esoteric; even among Jews, themselves. Mr. Maimon took no prisoners when he wrote, slammed head-on into the established Jewish scholars of his day; and those with whom he took issue, all the way back to the time of the "other" Moses. Had he been burned at the stake or excommunicated, it would have been fitting, albeit so hideously wrong. However for me, being an eccentric, I fairly swoon over his principles: Provincially Jewish to the core; but grounded, developed, and enhanced by the classical thinkers of Greece, Rome, and the golden age of Islam.I say this book "rocks."It is at once an introduction to the magnificence of Maimonides, and it is a summation, too; depending upon the reader. For the novice such as myself, who craves information about Mr. Maimon, Halbertal's volume is superb. I would imagine that for the knowledgeable reader, "Maimonides: Life and Thought" would be a sublime refresher, synthesizer, and assistant with insightful information. It's tough going on the one hand; I find myself wanting the primary sources. On the other, it's deliciously rich, beautifully written, not without witty similes and metaphors. It's terrific! What can I say? As for the translator (the book was originally published in 2009, in Hebrew), the 2014 (yes) English edition's eloquence is clean, fluid, and filled with fun vocabulary to delight: Three cheers for Joel Linsider! So for me, I think "Maimonides: Life and Thought," by Moshe Halbertal, is a million times better than any Harry Potter tome; and between us, many times more spellbinding... Enjoy.

The book itself can be divided into three parts: his biography, his legal work and The Guide. As to the biographical part, it gives a clear overview of Maimonides' life. At times, it becomes reductive, but one can figure that out as one reads it.His part on the law is the best part of the book. Professor Halbertal teaches law and it shows through clearly as he explains the originality of Maimonides' thought in this area as Maimonides seeks to reorganize concisely for philosophic purpose. The weakest part of The book is his section on The Guide. The Guide is a maze. Maimonides made it so intentionally. One should attempt to read it as Maimonides requires. Instead, professor Halbertal provides his own grid consisting of four types of analysis. They are: a skeptical reading, a mystical reading, a conservative reading and a philosophic reading. These types of reading only go so far since they are not Maimonides' way of reading. They also tend to simplify a richness found in the text itself which is undeserved but understandable.Perhaps, my biggest complaint about this section on The Guide concerns Philosophy. Though I do not believe that Professor Halbertal meant it, the text comes off as though Maimonides provided a doctrine. To me, it seems that Maimonides was teaching a way to think scientifically and not to accept things on authority including himself. It is clear enough that Maimonides is a radical thinker going to the roots. It also appears to me that he seeks those who may surpass him in careful thinking. This review should not be read disrespectfully. It is clear that Professor Halbertal has great love and respect for Maimonides. He shows great learning and I have learned much from this book. For those interested, I would urge finding additional readings concerning The Guide's literary character as a means to enter the text. Here one may begin to see how Maimonides writes to unpuzzle it. There is nothing like reading The Guide except perhaps Torah as Maimonides suggests.

A Religious Path Through Science By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel In Cordoba, Spain, is a statue of Moses ibn Maimon, Maimonides, for he was born in that Andalusian city during the cosmopolitan Golden Age of Sefarad. The common language was Arabic, even when written in Hebrew letters. The science of experimentation was yet centuries to come but Aristotle and Galen and other Greek thinkers, translated by Muslim scholars, yet offered logic and some understanding of nature, structure, function, and causality. The philosophical Maimonides offered science and knowledge as a key religious path leading to awe and love or compassion. He attacked superstitions, talismans, and causative incantations and any anthropomorphic conception of God, even in use of personal pronouns, as de facto idolatry. He took the Babylonian Talmud and the body of subsequent traditions and created essentially a practical, categorized moral and legal handbook, the Mishneh Torah, separating core teachings from doubtful or obsolete interpretations. Moreover, his Guide to the Perplexed, because of its ambiguity, became a religious map with four interrelated paths whose philosophical, skeptical, mystical, or orthodox approach would depend on an individual's education and provisional predilection. Maimonides had a deep understanding and respect for people's psychological needs, even if contrary to scientific logic. Author and scholar Moshe Halbertal's book provides a penetrating look into the mind of this great religious thinker. While some of the sections discussing the Mishna Torah become tedious and turbid by its detail legal analysis and historic comparisons of wisdom, the later examination of the Guide to the Perplexed is stunningly clear and comprehensive. The book examines Maimonides' views on evil and its personal, legal, and biological forms; on destiny of individuals and of species; on cosmic origins; on miracles versus logic and knowledge; on divine punishment and reward for governance and social order versus personal spiritual developmental gains and blocks; and on love and awe as steps toward perfection and experiencing the divine. The medieval mind and social outlook is revealed yet the reader also finds modern thinking and connections to the later Jewish philosopher, Spinoza. I grew up hearing about Maimonides without actually knowing anything about his great writings. Halbertal fills that void with an insightful book. Maimonides now become relevant to my own religious pursuits.

Buy the Original Instead By JHF I have used On Guard as a high school textbook for apologetics; so I was hoping that this new edition "for students" would be a better version of the original. It is not. The opening chapter has been removed, which is a real loss, because this chapter defined basic terms like "apologetics" and explained why this subject is worthwhile. The new edition is just an abridgement of the first. There are no additions - study questions, glossary, etc. The original had ten chapters; the "for students" edition has nine. Also, the original edition is cheaper and includes Craig's personal reflections on his journey to faith. These reflections were included as interludes after every three or four chapters in the first edition but have been cut from the second.

Not unlike his previous book of the same title but this one is designed to be something to give away to a new believer or a non-believer. Meets the goal, no doubt. I already gave mine away... time to consider getting another copy! :)
