The Zombie Chasers #7: World Zombination, by John Kloepfer

Review Praise for the Zombie Chasers series: “Kloepfer’s first is a Zombieland for the middle-school set: funny, off-color and extremely gross. A great pick for the child who thought Diary of a Wimpy Kid just needed more motile corpses.” (Kirkus Reviews)“A quick, fun read, loaded with jokes and middle–school sarcasm.” (School Library Journal)“If there’s an award for the grossest descriptions of zombies, Kloepfer would win it. Preteen boys will love it.” (St. Paul’s Pioneer Press)“Written with tongue firmly in cheek–and other body parts all over the landscape—this book will appeal to reluctant readers, particularly middle school boys.” (School Library Journal)“Fans of Garbage Pail Kid–style gross–outs will have a ball as Zack and his buddies take down ‘a butt–load of zombies.’” (ALA Booklist)

He's 9 now and we're all glad the seventh book finally came out. Even though he is already way above this book's reading level, he still enjoyed World Zombination. It kind of brought him back to his early reading years. The only drawback, not for all, was that he sat down and finished the book in only a few hours. But the series is really appropriate for early developing readers. The author did a great job at hooking kids to the stories, making many bookworms out of them. Thank you John Kloepfer.

Finally, the world is free of zombies and super zombies or is it?FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from HarperCollins in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.

If you are a true believer, Satan hates you because you bear the image of Christ and because you were snatched from his power. You deserted Satan, and he wants you back. He wants to sift you like wheat. While we should not overestimate Satan s power, to our peril we underestimate an enemy who is living, intelligent, resourceful, and cunning.

Every Christian is in a battle that is fierce, spiritual, and necessary between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. We need to know the enemy his personality, his strategies, his weaknesses, and his defeat at Calvary and his final judgment.

In a day when society has in many ways placed itself under Satan s rule, when Satanism is flourishing in Western nations, when certain branches of the church are preoccupied with deliverance ministries, and when others deny the devil s existence, Fighting Satan is a sober, practical perspective on this vital subject. Joel R. Beeke states,' We must know our enemy. . . . We must know how to withstand him and what spiritual weapons to take up against him. We must defeat him by faith through lives that bear fruit and spread the truth'.

With questions for reflection and discussion at the close of each chapter, Fighting Satan is ideal for group and individual Bible study.

Fighting Satan: Knowing His Weaknesses, Strategies, and Defeat, by Joel R. Beeke

Review Joel Beeke's Fighting Satan anchors in the bedrock of a noble exposition of the Christian life viewed as homo viator (the pilgrim traveler) embattled in a war with Satan at his heels. It is in the same line as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, William Gurnall's Christian in Complete Armour, and Thomas Brooks's Precious Remedies against Satan's Devices. Succinct and deeply pastoral, Dr. Beeke's little volume has all the marks of a Christian classic. Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest and get ready to fight the good fight of faith. This will help you view the Celestial City and the assurance of Jesus Christ. --Derek W. H. Thomas, senior minister of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina, and the Robert Strong Professor of Systematic Theology and Practical Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia

By Father Schnippel Bringing together her two loves of Catholicism and beer, Sarah Vabulas offers this very unique contribution to the New Evangelization of bringing the Gospel alive in a new and exciting way. Beginning with her own personal story, she weaves in the history of the Catholic Church and alcohol (hello, GK Chesterton!) before giving a quick synopsis of religious orders who operate breweries (with an overview of their more popular products.)Did you know the best beer in the world is brewed by Trappist monks, for example? But it is also more than just a memoir and historical book, this book is also a 'how to' for beginning homebrewers in the rapidly expanding gallon batch size, instead of the more typical five gallon batches that most homebrew website and books deal with.As a fellow homebrewer, Sarah's love for unique and fun flavors comes across in the recipes included in the back half of the book, many of which do not have commercial examples (A lemon mint pale ale instead of a summer shandy? Yes, Please!)This unique book related in a unique voice is wonderful addition to the growing segment of Catholic literature that is aimed to teh popular culture as well. It is beautifully laid out and the recipes are easy to follow for even the most beginner of homebrewers while teaching even older pros new tips and tricks with recipe formulation.

A friendly introduction to home brews -- and evangelization, too By Maria Johnson Vabulas weaves personal stories of evangelization through stories on the lives of saints and holy people, breweries, information on varieties of alcoholic beverages, and a collection of recipes that both instructs and entertains. She’s like the neighborhood bartender — mixes a great drink for you, serves it beautifully, and then leans on the bar with a smile and an open heart to engage, really engage, in conversations about faith, inspiration, and the Gospel.

The first was howsorry I felt for James. As a teacher I've actually heard parents tell their kids they hated them and wished they'd never been born. I've heard them blame the father's. This book immediately resonated with me as I am sure it will with so many of my students. The author has commented that his ideas came from several places, especially his favorite book, "The Phantom Tollbooth". I can see how the worlds resemble each other. I loved this world. It is a world I was very familiar with. My students have a difficult time believing there was a time I didn't believe in myself. I considered myself no one special. I would try on occasion to better myself, only to have someone say something that made me feel like I was only average. James is whisked away to the land of Average where he is to be tested to see if he is to be their next king. I thought it funny that he wanted to excel at being average because he thought that was the best he could hope for. His journey to find out what happened to the last king will change his life in ways he never saw coming. I think this should be required reading in every class, in every school. There are so many people out there like James who need the message in this book. The funny thing is, at age 57, there were lessons I could still learn. Learning to step above seeing yourself as just average or not worth anything for some of us in some situations is an on-going process. I will definitely recommend this book to my fellow teachers and readers, and parents.

The plot enthralled me. Later as an adult the story still intrigued me. I loved the play on words that Norton Jester used. This year during Children’s Book Week, I created a list of favorite books and found articles to go with those books. At that time I heard about an author who wanted to create a story similar to The Phantom Tollbooth.Gary Schultz has succeeded in creating a story worthy of the comparison. The King of Average gripped me from the first line. The story follows James a boy who wants to be just average. His home life is such that he wants to prove to himself that he can do something good, even if it is just average; it has to be better than good for nothing. As he mutters to himself coming home from school, he suddenly is transported to another world where he meets Mayor Culpa the scapegoat and Monsieur Roget and Killjoy. The three go on a quest to instate James as the king of Average. He travels above and below Average on his adventure. The characters are believable and loveable. The various trials that James finds himself in are realistic and at the heart deal with the insecurities that children and even adults face; the main one being ‘am I good enough?’ James must face the doubt within himself before he can become the person he was meant to be. I was quite sorry when I turned the last page. I would love to see The King of Average read in my sixth grader’s classroom. I could even adjust my unit on The Phantom Tollbooth to include this new children’s book.

It's an adventure story that also has enough wordplay to provide a steady stream ofsmiles from start to finish. Gary loves puns. His title itself made me smile. Mayor Culpa, the scapegoat sidekick for James, our King of Average, is just the beginning.James has a bad mother. He deeply wants to be average instead of a total waste, as she tells him he is. Then his brilliant thought to become the most average boy in the world turns into a heroic quest. It is, of course, not only a physical struggle, but the path to see himself as he truly is.We are led through a fantasy land which includes Lake Inferior and the Sea of Doubt, places well known to humans of all ages. And eventually, asquests should, James's takes us home with him. King or not, James is transformed.

What Is the World Series?

It was October 1, 1903, and the first World Series game was about to begin. Hours before the game, thousands of fans poured into the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston. They came by foot, by horse and buggy, and by trolley car.

By 2:00 p.m., all nine thousand seats were taken. Seven thousand more fans filed in, sitting on fences and standing behind ropes around the outfield. For this game, admission was double the usual cost: fifty cents for standing room and bleacher seats. One dollar for grandstand seats.

Businessmen, students, factory workers. The rich and the poor. Fans from all backgrounds came—with one exception. African Americans were not welcome in the stands or on the field. (In fact, there would be no black players in Major League Baseball until 1947.)

At 3:00 p.m., an announcer shouted out the lineup through a megaphone. The game pitted the Boston Americans against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In the first inning, Honus Wagner brought one of his Pirates teammates home with a line-drive single. It was the very first run scored in the very first World Series.

Every October, the temperature drops. Leaves fall. Excitement fills the air for baseball fans. It’s time for the World Series—a once-a-year contest between the best of the Major Leagues—to name a championship team.

But the World Series is more than a competition. It’s an event with a capital E. During those autumn days, it captures the attention of the entire United States. Presidents throw out first pitches. Popular singers belt out the national anthem. In wartime, in peacetime, in good times and bad, the World Series celebrates a game that has become so popular, it is known as the national pastime.

CHAPTER 1 In the Beginning

Since the mid-1800s, the game of baseball has been played pretty much the way we know it today. However, until 1869, there were no professional teams with paid players. The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first pro team. Others followed, and in time the teams joined leagues, which had rules, schedules, and player contracts.

"In Our Time," that is, within the last fifty years, the world has witnessed the greatest improvements in Catholic-Jewish relations since the death of Jesus of Nazareth. Many courageous people contributed to this improvement. Catholics and Jews have embarked on a historic engagement with one another. But one event, one stroke of a pen, on October 28, 1965, made all of this possible. This modest book tells this momentous tale.... "It looks great! Mazel tov on a fine effort. It is a very good summary." -- Eugene J. Fisher, PhD., former Associate Director of the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. In Our Time By Denis E. Mcgrath Veteran ecumenist James Barrens has done a great service to the enhancement of Roman Catholic-Jewish relations through this clearly written narrative brought about by the papal encyclical Nostra Aetate in 1965 and the improvement in dialogue in subsequent years to the present. The text of the encyclical and other agreement are appended to the book. This is a useful tool for ecumenical dialogue and should be warmly received by all those who toil in the field of discrimination and religious dissension and a handy supplement for participants in ecumenical Seders.I was given an electronic copy in return for an honest review

A wonderful holiday story about a small bird named Arthur, who lives in New York City.

After a fine, green summer in Central Park, all the birds are preparing to fly south. Except for Arthur, that is. Arthur is off playing, gazing into a lake, dreaming of wider seas. And so Arthur is left behind. It begins to get cold. The trees are losing their leaves. Arthur feels uneasy and lonely, especially after his nest is scattered to the winds. Arthur must find a new home, and after he does—he settles down in a statue’s open book—he discovers a new city, where he can play hide-and-seek in the steam from a manhole cover and feast with the pigeons on crumbs, and which soon brings other delightful surprises (and challenges): icicles, a great big sweet-smelling evergreen tree that is all lit up with people gathered around it to sing “Gloria” in the cold night, and snow—a whole winter wonderland! And then the trees begin to bud; the birds come back.... With Arthur as their guide through the city, children will find new poetry and beauty on every corner.

Arthur (New York Review Children's Collection), by Rhoda Levine

Review "If I could have only one of these books for myself this is one I would pick...One of the best children’s books ever – that’s why it is called a ‘classic', which means it’s special.” —Eileen Battersby, “My favourite children’s books of 2015”, Irish Times Praise for Rhoda Levine's Three Ladies Beside the Sea: "Ms. Levine's wry imagination and Mr. Gorey's powerfully epicene drawings (figure that one out) constitute a whole new country for a child to visit or for a lucky grandfather to act as tour guide. ...This is, of course, a must for the many Edward Gorey fans of all ages, and a chance to discover the fine poetry of Rhoda Levine. I read this one to my five year old grand-daughter because it is just long enough to be engaging and just short enough to be wiggle proof, and just wise enough to set a young imagination free as a bird." --Sherman Yellen, The Huffington Post Praise for Rhoda Levine's He Was There From the Day We Moved In: "Gentle color washes over Edward Gorey's illustrations of spindly boys and shaggy dog and skies. They set just the right note for this story that achieves a sensitive equilibrium of pathos and humor, a total effect that is sentimental without apology and optimistic without reason." --The New York Times

I found this book in the basement level of City Light Bookstore in San Francisco. I think this purchase is more for me than the students. I'm not sure if they will love the deeper theme as much as I do, but we will see!
