Randy Frazee is the senior minister at Oak Hills Church, one of the largest churches in America, leading alongside author and pastor Max Lucado. A leader and innovator in spiritual formation and biblical community, Randy is the architect of The Story church engagement campaign. He is also the author of The Heart of the Story, The Connecting Church 2.0, and The Christian Life Profile Assessment. He and his wife, Rozanne, live in San Antonio, Texas.
Laurie’s first published work was a note passed to a boy in elementary school. You would have thought that this most embarrassing moment would have stopped her writing career. But instead, Laurie is the author of thirty five books and author/illustrator of two more. Laurie lives in rural Ohio with her husband and two daughters and loves writing surrounded by horses, cattle, dogs, cats, and five turkeys.

Notice I didn’t say they water down the stories of the Bible or the Biblical truths! As a mom, I appreciate a well-written book of Bible stories and scriptural truths. Something that goes beyond the Sunday School gloss-overs of Noah’s Ark and David & Goliath. I have found very few books/Bible storybooks that are both interesting to children while maintaining the truth and “grit” of the actual Bible events.The Believe Storybook: Think, Act, Be Like Jesus fits the bill! This is a beautifully illustrated book with 256 pages, 60 stories and 30 chapters that convey with great accuracy and conviction high points of the Bible. Unlike other Bible Storybooks that chronologically follow the Bible, this storybook is divided into three main sections full of chapters, with each chapter covering a different theme. The main sections are THINK, ACT, BE. It covers a multitude of material— everything from who God is, to Biblical community, eternity, fruit of the Spirit and the church.I love the way this book is laid out. For instance, under the main section of THINK, Chapter 3 is Salvation. The Key question is: How do I have a relationship with God? It is followed by a (beautifully illustrated, full-color) synopsis of Genesis 2-3 from the Old Testament when Adam & Eve disobey God. It then has a “Jump to Jesus” page where the OT story is connected to Jesus and the following pages take us to the New Testament with a story from Luke of Jesus’ resurrection. Each chapter carefully and brilliantly weaves the Old and the New Testaments together with the common thread of Jesus. Reading this book with my 4 year old has really helped me understand (and hopefully her too!) how the Bible is truly connected and all things point to Christ!This is a great book for gifting. It is full-color, glossy pages and has a dust jacket with the cover. The size of this book (I’ve had to include a picture at the end so you can gauge the size of it— it was surprising to me at first!) is large, almost coffee table sized. In fact, leaving it out on your coffee table might not be a bad idea. By Kari Rothstein As a mother I’m always looking for ways that I can help teach my son about God. With the success of the Believe series of books and Bibles, I was interested to see if the Believe Storybook (published 2015 by Zonderkidz) geared at children would be a good resource.It’s patterned a similar way to the other editions of the Believe books are laid out with a focus on learning about how to think act, and be like Jesus. Randy Frazee (with Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton and illustrated by Steve Adams) sets out with a goal to make the Bible come alive for children. The book’s three main sections are divided into think, act and be. The “think like Jesus” sections are devoted to giving children a better knowledge of spiritual concepts such as salvation and eternity. “Act like Jesus” consists of teaching children the actions that should comprise a Christian’s life including worship, prayer and spiritual gifts. “Be like Jesus” focuses on big picture concepts, the tricky stuff is that required from us by God every day, but looks different in our individual lives like hope, faithfulness and humility. Each topic includes a story from the Old and the New Testament and includes a point to Jesus section as well as key verse.While I agree that the 60 classic Bible stories chosen for the Believe Storybook, with 30 from each testament, are very well told, I don’t think they compliment each other well. The section on stewardship contained the Old Testament story of Hannah and Samuel as well as the New Testament story of the Widow’s Mite. These stories don’t compliment each other well and I feel that there are better examples of stewardship as such that could have been chosen. The Believe Storybook doesn’t contain grievous errors, rather it makes difficult transitions and overwhelms with too broad examples.The illustrations by Steve Adams are lovely. Each artistic rendering is earthy, warm and evocative without being gratuitous or too violent. My 7-month-old appreciated the pictures in the Believe Storybook and he’s a tough critic.While I don’t think that the Bible must be studied in any particular order, I truly don’t agree with the way the stories are matched in the Believe Storybook. The book is lovely and the stories are well told, but they don’t always match well. I think this book could be a good resource for children and parents, but it’s not my favorite work. It could be a good supplemental book, but I will continue to look for a main family devotional.(I received a copy of this book for review from BookLook Bloggers, all opinions are my own).

I was looking for a straight forward curriculum that I would not have to modify for a children's ministry.I find that I have to change the key question or the key idea (or both) because the stories they use often do not answer the question. The OT story and the NT story are often badly mismatched making a smooth transition very difficult so I usually use just one while trying to incorporate the "jump to Jesus" section. Do not let the quality fool you, it's requires too much manipulation to use in a high quality ministry. This review contradicts almost all of the others, but I am very disappointed, especially given the reputation of its author.
