It has the potential to be a real dry and difficult read. Minor differences in key doctrines have cause major strife throughout Church history. It was with these thoughts in mind, that I cautiously approached this latest read. This book is the second volume of three. It covers the doctrines of Creation, The Fall, and Salvation. These are three important aspects of Christian theology, and so a sound exposition of them is an essential matter to growth in the faith.I was instantly struck by the remarkable readability of this book. While they do use theological terms, they instantly explain them in laymen's terms. The book has an open language to it. The door is open just far enough, to let in varying points within the broader outline of orthodox beliefs. I come from a fundamentalist background. I am used to questions of differences in some doctrines of being between right and wrong, as opposed to being minor disagreements within the large house of orthodoxy. I truly appreciated the way the authors were able to cast differences in such a constructive tone.Another great feature of this title is returning Christian focus back to those things that we hold in common. Although we may differ in our opinion of how God's grace is bestowed upon us, we still hold jointly that it is the overflowing grace of God that makes us right with our Creator. As a layperson, within the house of Orthodoxy there are some points of disagreement, that may wait until we stand before God. If we are going to be the salt and light, that we are called to be, then we need to stop erecting fences between those who believe most of the same things we do. We must major on the majors and minor on the minors. I think the Moravian Church may say it best when they say; "In essential, unity; In non-essentials, liberty; In all things, Love".This is an excellent book for the layperson who desires to understand a little greater the doctrines of the Church. It has a beautiful history of each of the doctrines through Church history to the present. It is written in a simple and straight-forward manner, and would be an easy read for even the novice theologian. It would also be a great tool for the layperson that would like a bigger picture of the varying ideas and thoughts that make up greater Orthodoxy. I would definately recommend it to others. In fact, I believe I will be purchasing the other two volumes to see what the Authors have discussed in those books.I was provided a complimentary copy of this title through the Bethany House Blogger Review Program, in order to offer this review.www.spiritualwilderness.net@screwtape21

Curnutt While this is Volume 2 in a three volume set it must be noted that this is the last volume being published. Volumes 1 and 3 have been out for a while. This project was taken on by professor's from Dallas Theological Seminary, thus the views are Protestant Conservative Evangelical. Most pastors will know that for decades the major Systematic Theology work from Dallas Seminary has been Lewis Sperry Chafer's 8 volume work. So, why a new three volume series?Well, the answer is found in the introduction for the series, the writers are wanting you to Know God and to do that you must Know About Him. So that means that as a Christian layperson or professional you need to study Theology. But the study of Theology can seem like a daunting task for the layperson. Here is what the introduction states as to why this series of texts; "Exploring Christian Theology differs from other mini-theologies in that it strives to present a broad consensus, not a condensed systematic model of one evangelical teacher or protestant tradition.......Treat each volume as a simple primer that supplements (not supplants) more detailed treatments of theology--that complements (not competes with) intermediate and advanced works."So, what we have is an attempt to give a more readable version of a Theological Text for the layperson. This is not meant to take the place of a more systematic approach to theology, as it states it is to supplement and complement other works that your denomination might use.So, with that in mind I took up the task of reading through Volume two with the understanding that it was not a comprehensive look at the theological topics that it was going to tackle. I also liked what the author's had to say in that, "since this is not a systematic study you can pick and choose the topic you want to read without working through the text from beginning to end." That is good because most laypeople will have certain topics that they want to delve into without having to build upon them from one to the next.Volume two deals with "The Christian Story in Four Acts:" Act I -- Creation Act II -- Fall Act III -- Redemption Act IV -- RestorationEach of these topics are broken up into bite size studies that the reader can tackle and accomplish fairly easily. I particularly like their style of how they break down the four acts. The breakdown is: High - Altitude Survey Passages to Master Facts to Never Forget Dangers to Avoid Principles to Put into Practice Voices from the Past and PresentThey also give you some recommendations for further books and studies you might do from things that have been discussed in their text.Reading through this text I felt that they did an excellent job of breaking down the theological jargon in a way that a lay person will be able to understand. They have gone to great lengths to make the book readable.I would highly recommend this material for any person who wants to get to know God better and put that knowledge and relationship into more practical use in their lives.NOW, for one last bit of advice, for my Evangelical Free Church of America lay people this is a good set of books to read, but you also should purchase a copy of "Evangelical Convictions, A Theological Exposition of the Statement of Faith of the Evangelical Free Church of America." It is the official book to explain the complete Statement of Faith of our denomination. It is also well written and also written in a way that any layperson, pastor or theologian can understand.Enjoy learning more about God as you read through these books, and don't forget to spend time in your Bible as well.

WINEHOLT EXPLORING CHRISTIAN THEOLOGYCreation, Fall and SalvationNathan D Holsteen & Michael J Svigel General editorsDoctrine and theology are two things that are important to the Christian life but can be the cause for division. In their book, Nathan and Michael have put together important information about creation, the fall and salvation. They share different theories that are believed by many, giving the facts of each. This is the second book in the series on exploring Christian theology and cover the three subjects that are sometimes the cause for disagreement. A separate section is devoted to each subject with Biblical verses and overviews. Some of the things offered are scripture verses that can be memorized, facts on each subjects, passages to masters, voices from the past (quotes from early writers and theologians) and a history of doctrines. A section on other writings is offered for more reading on the subject.I found the book very easy reading and easy to understand. The information is thorough offering an in depth look at the subjects. The glossary of theological terms is a welcomed help to understanding their meaning. I agree with the one note on the back of the book: "A great way to get acquainted with key Biblical theological themes."I received this book free from Bethany House for purpose of this review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions I have expressed are my own.
