4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK By Stanley Krippner Most mainstream scientists and much of the lay public does not take parapsychology seriously. I doubt that many of them will invest the time and money required to acquire and read these two volumes. Perhaps it is just as well, as they might suffer cognitive dissonance as they discover the rigor, the care, and the discipline involved in what the editors call "psi research." Even the chapters by skeptics refrain from knee-jerk dismissal; one chapter concludes that the controversy "can only improve the quality and dependability of our science." For example, another skeptic points out that psi research has pioneered the use of effect size and meta-analysis. The editors, May and Marwaha, have made a judicious selection of content and authors; I was especially pleased to read chapters about the psychophysiology of psi and its association with geomagnetic field fluctuations and local sidereal time. They also made a wise decision by allotting the entire second volume to theories of psi. The reader will learn about how psi may be grounded in the observational theories, quantum mechanics, entropy, and/or subliminal perception. If potential readers are irrevocably committed to a worldview that rules out remote perception and the like, I would proffer the advice, "Read at your own risk."
