By David Van Bebber There is a plethora of resources for evangelicals to immerse themselves in regarding same-sex attraction and same-sex unions. In the last year, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage, this author has come across numerous publications on this relevant issue. While evangelicals did not rush this issue to the forefront, it has impacted the United States Christian denominations rather quickly. As a pastor of a Southern Baptist Church, this author has noted this issue causing an uneasiness among Missouri Baptist Church members. On one hand members know they oppose same-sex marriage, and they believe the Bible clearly addresses homosexuality as sin. On the other hand many are seemingly perplexed with how to discuss this issue and not be labeled a hate-monger or a bigot. It is with this thought in mind that Rob Phillips (Director of the Missouri Baptist Apologetics Network) produced his work "What Every Christian Should Know About Same-Sex Attraction: A Biblical Primer for the Local Church."As noted before, there are many strong resources available to evangelicals in regards to this issue. Phillips, however, has produced a very accessible tool for lay-leaders and church members alike to read and discuss. The text as a whole is only 81 pages, and while Phillips discusses all of the material contained in the book in an in-depth manner, one does not need to be a seminary student to grasp the concepts he is communicating. The book could be used by Sunday School classes, small groups, and even for a Sunday night book series. Being a keen scholar, Phillips displays in this book an ability to communicate effectively how a Christian can engage the issue of homosexuality from a Biblical worldview. Same-sex attraction is an issue that is difficult for Christians to discuss. Phillips, in a concise and easy to read manner, offers a useful resource for any Christian wanting to know how to deal with this controversy in a Christ-like manner.Concerning the specifics of the book itself, a strong parallel is constructed early on in the text regarding the “New McCarthyism” that the LGBT community has forced on to the topic of same-sex acceptance. Phillips then proceeds to walk readers through the “Six Key Passages” in which homosexual activity is directly engaged by scripture. After each scriptural example addressing homosexual activity is given, a summary and simple explanation of the text is offered. The book then considers the challenges that proponents of homosexuality would provide to those six passages. This method of back and forth is not only insightful but it engages a reader in a unique manner.The forth chapter of the book offers some affirmation to readers in reminding them of the absolute clarity with which scripture speaks. Some other popular pro-homosexual and extra-biblical arguments against the orthodox Christian position are discussed in the fifth chapter of the book. Then chapters six and seven directly address how both individuals and churches should respond to this controversy. The sixth and seventh chapters are the strongest part of this resource. Phillips offers specific responses to some popular accusations one dealing with same-sex attraction might bring to those who believe homosexual activity to be sin. Comments like: “Why do you hate people with same-sex attractions?”, “Jesus never spoke against homosexuality.”, and “But I was born this way.” are all addressed.[1]The book concludes with a chapter following the changing approaches in which evangelicals have addressed the issue of homosexuality. This brief chapter in essence offers a stark warning, though it is not stated outright, that Christians must root their position on this issue in biblical un-moving standards and not the flux of human morality. The last chapter provides a unique snapshot of current denomination’s and religion’s stances of same-sex marriage. While it is a snapshot, the chart offered by Phillips is a valuable visual reminder that those who believe homosexual activity to be sinful are not a lone voice.Overall, the book is a worthwhile read for those wanting to gain more insight on how to address the issue of same-sex attraction and how to deal with homosexuality as a Bible believing Christian. The book provides its readers with a thoughtful perspective on the topic, and it addresses this issue in a respectful and knowledgeable manner.

He made a distinction between same-sex attraction and unwanted same-sex attraction which I thought was helpful and should be challenging to married heterosexuals (although he does not go there). This distinction, however is not consistently presented throughout the book because he quotes people who are not reasoning from that perspective.
