About the Author  Ronnie Floyd was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention in 2014 and is pastor of Cross Church in NW Arkansas, a multi-site fellowship of believers. From a desire to influence the vibrant Northwest Arkansas business community, he founded the Northwest Arkansas Business Persons Summit. Floyd is a quick read that gives good food for thought. The premise of the book is that those in church leadership need to be thinking in a "forward" way about developing other leaders.The idea of making sure our own relationship with Jesus is strong and caring for others' development is an excellent focus. In particular, the chapter on ongoing teachability was a great reminder that true leaders are learners and learners can be great leaders.The overarching strength of the book is also the overarching weakness of the book - a lack of specific, practical directives on how to implement the seven marks of a forward leader. The strength is that it causes the aspiring forward leader to ponder how to apply the book's principles to their own specific setting. The weakness is that the lack of specific guidelines (besides waking up an hour and a half before the sun for over 60 minutes of personal devotional time with Jesus - something not that practical for many people) could leave the reader floundering.Disclosure: I received this book free from B&H Publishing Group. My own journey has confirmed the conclusions he has reached. While truth is absolute, we can choose our perspective where we get stuck in history or anticipate God’s future for us. While salvation addresses our past, its focus is always on what we can become through grace.I, too, have struggled with the approach some have taken to be uni-generational. The idea of the “family of God” requires us to relate to every generation. Since God’s Kingdom functions by faith, it is by nature forward looking. While the current culture is in an uproar over culture and its various sensitivities, God calls us to minister to all cultures.Teachability is primarily about attitude. It requires humility. The pride of our age prohibits us from truly learning God’s wisdom. His chapter on compassion was good, but his definition lacked the needed emphasis on actions. Jesus was “moved” with compassion, and sympathy for others’ plights is not enough.His final distinguishing mark is that we must be “driven by something more.” Good is the enemy of best; satisfaction is deadly. Striving to be more Christ-like is the heart of every disciple. Don’t settle for mediocracy. His call for “forward leaders” has never been more urgent! Read the book, and increase your leadership!

Believe, NIV: Living the Story of the Bible by Randy Frazee By David Kenney When I was in seminary, one of my favorite classes was “systematics” it’s basically “why you believe what you believe….” or more accurately “what it is you actually believe.” When I saw this book BELIEVE by RANDY FRAZEE. It appeared to be a scaled back, more reader-friendly “every day person” systematics text book.Eh. yes and no.The editors of BELIEVE describe it as: “Believe, NIV is a unique spiritual growth experience that takes you on a journey to think, act, and be more like Jesus. Each chapter uses short topical passages from the New International Version to help you live the story of the Bible. Using this edition of Believe, church families around the globe can now embrace a full ministry year through worship services, small group studies, and family activities.”When you open the book and look inside the front cover, the table of contents IS broken down just like a systematics book. It starts with God, Salvation, the Bible, Jesus, the Church, Humanity and so forth…. then it breaks down into personal growth like worship, prayer Bible study etc…The book is broken down into three main areas:Beliefs: What do I believe?Practices: What should I do?Virtues: Who am I becoming?Which is great! I was kind of looking for a simplified “discipleship” program that I could implement with people or new believers. When I got the book in the mail, it was…. HUGE. It’s as big as a BIBLE.Well, that’s because it kind of IS a Bible.This book has a lot of padding. And sadly it’s a BIG book that talks about a BIG BOOK! I assume the publishers wanted to “help” new readers by including in full, every supporting passage. Which is great, but … misleading. If the Bible portions were stripped out, you’d be left with a much smaller book.Plus, then within each chapter, the Bible has been stripped of all it’s chapter and verse references and strung together more in a “Message-style.”Again, let me repeat – for a target audience of New Believer. This is a great resource and I would highly recommend it, in fact I know exactly who I am going to give it to. But I don’t see using this as something to base curriculum or sermon prep or a discipleship program from.Thank you to Zondervan Publishers for sending me this preview copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Informative read By WRB Believe is strategically laid out to walk you through portions of Scripture that will help you to reap in a harvest of belief.The first ten chapters answer the question, "What do I believe?" The second ten chapters answer the question, "What should I do?" And finally the last ten chapters included is the question, "Who am I becoming?"This book will inspire you to believe with your heart the word of God and help you to apply it to your daily living experiences. Also included, at the end of the book, are questions that can be used for a group discussion. And there are transitions, written in italic, that offer an explanation to the Scriptures.One of the chapters I found particularly interesting was the chapter on Peace. Key idea - I Am free from anxiety because I have found peace with God, peace with others, and peace with myself.Believe is a well organized and informative read that can be a helpful guide in exploring your faith. Great New Biblical Resource By PoCoKat This review pertains to the electronic version of Believe, NIV: Living the Story of the Bible to Become Like Jesus by Randy Frazee.Randy Frazee is a pastor at the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. Oak Hills is an American mega church. Believe, NIV is an innovative way to study the Bible. It is separated into 3 10 week sections that are divided as follows: 10 Key Beliefs of Christian Faith (What Do I Believe?) 10 Key Practices of a Follower of Jesus (What Should I Do?) 10 Key Virtues that Assist in Becoming More Like Jesus (Who Am I Becoming?)Believe, NIV is an ambitious book. Each of the 30 chapters has a Key Idea, Key Verse followed by a very interesting discussion on the subject matter. I found the discussions to be straightforward and informative.I have tested the hyperlinks in the Kindle version and they all work. The book concludes with an Epilogue, Chart of References and Discussion Questions. The Discussion Questions will be very helpful for bible study for individuals or groups. I noticed that a campaign set along with children's and student's editions will be coming out in June. I understand that Believe will be used in churches to promote biblical understanding. I think this will be a great campaign for churches to embark upon.I do recommend this very interesting book, Believe, NIV. It is an informative book for both new and more mature believers. The pages are thick & glossy. The pictures are colorful & many words are written in a designed font. Very fun!This book takes the timid Geronimo to Easter Island to help his sister. The adventure incorporates real facts about the Island. Geronimo is on a search for treasure that ends in a surprise. My son gave it 5 ⭐️s!

About the Author The Rev. Father Adolphe Tanquerey, S.S. and D.D., was born in 1854 at Blainville, France. At the age of eighteen, he became a seminarian and joined the Society of St. Sulpice, harboring a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ and the Blessed Mother. In 1878 he was ordained a priest, and thereafter began a career of teaching, which he had a clear gift for. His famous theological works include the three-volume Synopsis Theologiae Dogmaticae and comprehensive The Spiritual Life, the latter of which was published circa 1930 by Desclee and Company, Tournai, with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur. Father Tanquerey died on the twenty-first of February, 1932.

Great book for those interested in a deeper meaning to the spiritual life By TTM53 As a Catholic laity this is a wonderful source of information regarding the spiritual life for intermediate or advanced readers. If you are interested in a work for beginners, I suggest Ralph Martin's "The Fulfillment of All Desire." "The Spiritual Life" contains information intentionally meant for priests and spiritual leaders; however, any lay Catholic serious about entertaining a more advanced approach to spirituality will find this book to be great. I especially like the practicality of the text that can be used for one's own spiritual growth. As a psychology student I find this work incredibly beneficial to my own academic interests; the connection between asceticism and understanding the human psyche is very strong. For those interested in advancing their knowledge in the spiritual life this book is for you! If you are a priest or religious, I strongly encourage this book to be part of your library - it is very good!

By Deanna Dellinger I have been a student of The Bible for 30 years or more and I've never heard an interpretation of the Book of Daniel quite like this one. Particularly in the the way Stendal describes the attitude of Daniel and the three brothers who were thrown into the furnace. Unlike many "religious" folks and their attitudes toward contemporary leaders today, they did not dishonor the Babylonian rulers or their God. They understood that Nebuchadnezzar was placed on the throne by God. Therefore, to rebel against or ever speak ill of God's chosen leader was an affront to God Himself and completely out of the question. The only time Daniel or the brothers were disobedient to the king was when the king's decrees were specifically in conflict with God's commandments. So when the king erected his golden statue, the brothers refused to bow to it out of respect for and fear of The One, True God. Likewise, when Daniel was ordered to no longer pray to God, he was thrown into the lion's den by Darius, the Persian King. In every case when God's followers chose obedience to God, they were uninjured through whatever penalty was handed out for disobeying the kings of Babylon. The blazing furnace... the lion's den... it didn't matter; obedience to God trumps obedience to temporal leaders every time. I think about this when I've had thoughts or react in a negative way toward our own national leaders... I must admit I am not always respectful of them in my speach and attitude. From reading Stendal's book, I have had to reexamine my attitude and realize our leaders have been placed in the seats of temporal power by God. I, therefore, am obligated to "give to Caesar what is Caesar, but give to God what belongs to Him." Thank you Russell for bringing new life and relevance to a book of the Bible that is essential to those who wish to live according to the will of God. God's peace, brother.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Worth Reading By Martus The Author takes a novel look at the Book of Daniel that I have never read anywhere. I have heard the best books and teachers will make you think and that you will at first disagree at points and be inspired at others. The Book of Daniel by Russell Stendal is just that kind of book. The book is loaded with precious jewels of insight. He brings a novel application to the contemporary church and makes you think hard about your faith in Christ and His Church. His contrast of the Kingdom of this world and the Kingdom of Christ is very good. I liked that the book is Christocentric. Be ready because you will probably question and disagree at points but I found that it added to the strength of the book in that it forces a person to think through their position. It is definitely a book worth reading.

I'm a born again christian believing in Jesus Christ as my personal savior, and I feel this book is extremly good. I do not give hi score unless I feel it has gone beyond my standards. Clear Ideas Ways to Keep Pressing Ahead When You Feel Weary By Rebecca Ray Did you ever know that God was leading you in a certain direction and leap out in faith, only to find that before you’d brought the task to completion, you were stuck in a messy middle that you hadn’t accounted for? This is the concept that is the subject of Charlotte Gambill’s newest book,The Miracle in the Middle: Finding God’s Voice in the Void.In this book, Gambill explains how that sometimes, when we get to the middle of our task, our enthusiasm and energy is completely spent, and we often don’t know whether to turn back or to press ahead. She reminds us that the prize ahead is one worth fighting for and gives us some practical help for navigating remainder of the way.I found this to be a delightful and inspiring read. I was especially convicted by a portion of a chapter on following where Gambill is discussing Jesus passing by the boats calling his first disciples to follow him. She says, “. . . the discipleship he was calling them into was a ministry not based on their qualifications or experience, but on their ability to follow.” So often, I think God’s called me for my qualifications, and yet he’s not interested in what my experience or qualifications are, he just wants me to follow where he’s leading.I also found her descriptions, as an Englishwoman, of her take-charge American husband living in England to be incredibly interesting. It is true that there are sometimes times of waiting and sometimes times where we just need to take charge and see something through, even if we need to push it a little. Wisdom is knowing which situation demands which response.I wish there had been more of a focus in the book, or if there was I missed it, on when you can’t do anything but wait on a situation that is beyond your control. That’s the area that I personally struggle with the most, and I would have liked some additional guidance there, but overall, this is a great book to help you as you’re trying to get from Point A to Point B.Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.

A Flawed But Personal Encouragement To Trust In God In Difficult Situations By Nathan Albright [Note: This book was provided free of charge by BookLook/Thomas Nelson Publishers in exchange for an honest review.]The title to this book is a bit of a tease, because while it does discuss at length the middle parts of life where our tenacity and resolve are tested, it does not speak at length about the miracle in this period, nor does it discuss hearing God in the void, but rather spends more time discussing what we need to do in the middle, or before we get there, and what it is like to deal with God’s silence during that period as He tests and refines us. This is a very good book, and an extremely useful one at this present stage of my life, given that I am in the middle in a lot of ways, but it was not quite the book I was expecting, not that this is a problem.In terms of its contents, the book contains eleven chapters of about twenty pages each, totaling just over 200 pages total. The book seems written in a bit of a hurry, as it was written under a deadline and the author appeared to struggle with how to fully handle the subject. The examples in the book include biblical examples and a lot of personal examples from the author’s family and from her own identity as an Englishwoman married to an American man who serves as a leader in the same congregation she grew up in. Many of the chapter titles give a clue to the extended metaphor that they are filled with, with a chapter like communal change not referring to the change of a body of people but rather the embarrassing and awkward situation of having to change one’s garments in public. This book is certainly honest about awkward aspects of life, and it does not shy away from the difficulties of life, or the struggles one faces in keeping one’s spirits up.There are a lot of lessons that this book gives that qualify as useful and pertinent advice. One is to be sensitive to the need to show love and concern even in the most stressful of times, one is to recognize the tenacity and strength of character that one is gaining through difficulty, as well as the need at times to make oneself heard rather than suffer in silence. There is a fine line between patience and timidity, and this book offers few easy answers but the call to struggle as well as building faith and trust. The book’s real strength is in giving encouragement, and though this book is not likely to be remembered in a decade or two, it is the kind of book that will give some encouragement and a bit of wisdom for those seeking to endure until the reward is seen. That audience certainly includes me. Of particular interest to some readers will be the way the book strongly enjoins church leaders not to freeze people in time at their worst moments and hinder their ability to serve in a godly fashion, advice that is sorely needed and not always heeded.

You feel that you are there By bernie As with many readers my previous exposure to this story was the Disney Cartoon and the ghoulish adaptation by Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci in the Movie "Sleepy Hollow" [Blu-ray] (1999).With my purchase of the kindle I was catching up on the classics or sample from different writers. I did not realize this was so short of a story and had to get the images out of my head from the films.I am amazed had what a good descriptive writing of Washington Irving. I had to set the book down occasionally to look up people and words. Now I ordered information on Hudson and Cotton Mather.I spent a year near the location of the story at West Point. Now I wonder if there was such a place as Sleepy Hollow.This is another example of the book being better than the movie. And I look forwarded to reading more of Washington Irving. You will be hooked on him also. In any event it is work the read.I used the Text-to-Speech function of the book. I intend to purchase a copy form my physical library.

This author has kept to the original by presenting a fine folktale of life in New York By Nicola Mansfield A very well written story in itself and a well-told adaptation of the classic tale. Many adaptations choose to concentrate on the headless horseman and turn this into a horror story when it is not. This author has kept to the original by presenting a fine folktale of life in New York, a love triangle, and the place ghost stories held in these peoples' lives. The headless horseman scene is the climax of the story which meanders along telling the story of Ichabod Crane first and foremost with moments of humour and a bit of a sense of the haunted. A good introduction to the ghost story.

I have read many books but only to lose my interest because of so complicated rituals you needed to perform. Then I had found Baal Kadmon books. About the Author Rita Ann Fleming's inspiration for creating funny poems comes from life lessons learned from growing up with eight siblings, from raising four children, and enjoying eleven grandchildren. Many of the poems were imagined as she patiently waited for the 7,000 or so babies she has delivered. She lives in Jeffersonville, Indiana, with John, her husband of over 40 years. Rita has previously published crossword puzzles, professional journal articles including Developing a child's Self Esteem, and a medical text. But she most enjoys writing poems for children and family members to enjoy together.

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—In this first of a series, history buff and reenactor Thompson displays a solid knowledge of the Civil War, hampered by an overreliance on "hip" prose. He ably covers major battles, campaigns, and figures in a roughly chronological order, mixing informational passages and fact boxes with colorful action sequences in each chapter in what could potentially have been a winning formula to grab and hold the attention of young readers. Unfortunately, Thompson's colorful prose often veers into the realm of the bizarre. The repeated use of the word dude may seem odd coming from an adult author, and readers are likely to miss many pop culture references, such as a mention of the 1990s film Anaconda or a "Mike Tyson haymaker sucker punch." The many run-on sentences will leave readers at a loss. One such sentence describing Lincoln's situation approaching the election of 1864 ends by saying that his popularity didn't "necessarily mean that everything was coming up unicorns, rainbows, and smiley-face sunshine happiness roses of joy." Thompson takes a linguistic swing for the fences and ends up spinning around and falling down at the plate. [Review from 13 year old son] This book is a must have for anyone By Anna This book is the first textbook that i have come across that i couldn't put down. This book has all the wit and charm that Ben Thompson has, and leaves out the swearing that is so frequent in Badass(thompson's other series). Thompson also talks a lot about civil war women, which is really cool.This book is a must have for anyone.

By Young Mensan BookParade This book is filled with accurate information from the first shots fired at Fort Sumter to the Confederate surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse. You will be waiting for more events to come. This book is packed with illustrations, facts, statistics, and quotes. The book is split up into stories, such as “Grant Versus Lee”, that are all connected together. There are facts about the war at the end of each chapter. These facts tell about things such as : “Women in the war” which tells about the unusual ways women served in the war. A good book for ages 10-15.I enjoyed the illustrations that show what is happening in the story. They clearly show what you are reading. This is a nice collection of stories about brave men and a few women, of the sort that everyone used to know, and no one under 40 does anymore. But these are the sort of stories that make people "like history," and if more books like this were available ( new or reprinted) more kids would like history.

They need a breather but they just do not know how. Many think that a breather is a week long vacation that they cannot afford. Some think that it is expensive; others think that they cannot be gone for that long. Try to close your eyes and relax. Control your breathing. Be conscious of each inhale and exhale. Avoid getting your muscles tense. Breathe deeply to ease the tension in your muscles. Imagine that your entire body and being is light. Feel the weightlessness.

This book is so helpful, I always tend to live under constant stress, it's always something different; work, kids, cats, family, there is something that needs to be solved immediately and I never get to have time for me! I have lived under constant stress for so long that when I tried to make it go down I couldn't, so a friend told me to read this books and I'm so grateful for it! the books is amazing it has great tips on how to life and what to change in your life in order to life stress free.I found myself more happy, with less preoccupations about tomorrow and enjoying today so much more, I took a yoga class a week and I let myself fall sleep without thinking on tomorrow's problems! Now I feel more happy and relax! I loved this book!

By marius oprea I picked up this book out of boredom, while browsing through the Self-Help section of Amazon. Didn’t expect much from it since it’s not the first book I read about self development and being at peace with who you are. I can’t say I enjoyed it a lot, but it was good enough to finish reading it (and very short). The main idea is that we have to allow more time to ourselves, to try to absorb something good from everything we do and, last but not least, to love. Give it a read, won’t take you more than half an hour, but more importantly follow it’s advice.
