Forward leaders are missing in action.
Where are they today? Leaders in the future must rise and lead people forward. They have to lead so high above the fray they will not stoop to littleness in their thinking and conduct. They have to lead so big, they will not settle for just leading a few. They have to lead so deep; they will not be tossed and turned as they ride the tumultuous waters of leadership. Author Ronnie Floyd is calling for a different kind of leader to rise up for the future.
Forward is about seven distinguishing marks for future leaders. Who are these future leaders? Anyone who leads anything in the future.
Forward is a call. Forward is a process. Forward is a direction. Forward is a change.

By Jessica Pigg Forward: 7 Distinguishing Marks for Future Leaders takes seven unique characteristics that every leader must apply to their own life and ministry. These seven distinguishing marks for future leaders include: 1) Forward Truth, 2) Cross-Generational, 3) Futuristic Thinker, 4) Culturally Sensitive, 5) Growing Teachability, 6) Compelled by Compassion, and 7) Driven by Something More.In Forward, SBC President and Pastor Ronnie Floyd is calling for a different kind of leader to rise up for the future. Floyd urges current leaders to begin now in developing future leaders for the work of ministry.A number of times, Floyd states that “the challenge before leaders today and in the future is that our world is so filled with various groups and tribes who identify with one another around an idea or cause; they have forgotten they are a part of something bigger” (page 2). Floyd calls Forward leaders to rise beyond their own desires to be a part of something greater than themselves, something they cannot achieve on their own.Although this resource is concise and to the point, it is packed with tools and examples of how to be forward leaders in today’s world and the future world. With “forward actions” at the end of each chapter, Forward calls each leader to act immediately and start leading people forward. Forward is a call, process, direction, and change. So, what are you waiting for? Are you going to be a forward leader and lead people to a better future? This book was c/o B&H Publishing. All opinions are my own.

Floyd is a quick read that gives good food for thought. The premise of the book is that those in church leadership need to be thinking in a "forward" way about developing other leaders. The idea of making sure our own relationship with Jesus is strong and caring for others' development is an excellent focus. In particular, the chapter on ongoing teachability was a great reminder that true leaders are learners and learners can be great leaders. The overarching strength of the book is also the overarching weakness of the book - a lack of specific, practical directives on how to implement the seven marks of a forward leader. The strength is that it causes the aspiring forward leader to ponder how to apply the book's principles to their own specific setting. The weakness is that the lack of specific guidelines (besides waking up an hour and a half before the sun for over 60 minutes of personal devotional time with Jesus - something not that practical for many people) could leave the reader floundering.Disclosure: I received this book free from B&H Publishing Group. My own journey has confirmed the conclusions he has reached. While truth is absolute, we can choose our perspective where we get stuck in history or anticipate God’s future for us. While salvation addresses our past, its focus is always on what we can become through grace.I, too, have struggled with the approach some have taken to be uni-generational. The idea of the “family of God” requires us to relate to every generation. Since God’s Kingdom functions by faith, it is by nature forward looking. While the current culture is in an uproar over culture and its various sensitivities, God calls us to minister to all cultures.Teachability is primarily about attitude. It requires humility. The pride of our age prohibits us from truly learning God’s wisdom. His chapter on compassion was good, but his definition lacked the needed emphasis on actions. Jesus was “moved” with compassion, and sympathy for others’ plights is not enough. His final distinguishing mark is that we must be “driven by something more.” Good is the enemy of best; satisfaction is deadly. Striving to be more Christ-like is the heart of every disciple. Don’t settle for mediocracy. His call for “forward leaders” has never been more urgent! Read the book, and increase your leadership!
