Over the course of nearly half a century, Robert A. F. Thurman has left an indelible mark on numerous fields of study, including Buddhist literature, Tantric Buddhism, Tibetan Studies, and the comparative sciences of mind. To celebrate his seventieth birthday, Thurman's students and colleagues have come together to pay tribute to these contributions and to Thurman's ongoing leadership in these fields by assembling a collection of essays of their own that extend and supplement his groundbreaking research.
In Vimalakirti's House is the result of this collaboration and represents a broad spectrum of cutting edge studies in areas central to Thurman's own scholarly project. The resulting volume is itself a kind of "treasury of the Buddhist sciences," insofar as its authors explore wide-ranging problems in art, literature, epistemology, history, ritual, buddhology, and lexicography.

Arnold This excellent, wide ranging volume is a testament to the vision of intellectual and moral imperatives that Robert Thurman has clarified in his writings on Tibetan Buddhism over some forty years. His scholarly work may be overshadowed for many people by the enormous popular influence he has had, particularly in his close work with the Dalai Lama and public outreach with Tibet House but this volume corrects that, showing the continuity of these aspects. John Dunne and Evan Thompson, in particular, note the seminal role, terribly underappreciated, that Thurman has had in bringing the Buddhism/science dialogues together over thirty years ago. A vision of complementarity was laid out by Thurman, to an extent, in his monumental work, The Central Philosophy of Tibet, in which he compared the language therapy of Wittgenstein with that of Tsong Khapa. That avenue of the human sciences, the mind sciences, has been little developed in Thurman's wake, largely due to the inability of others to possess his capacity for rigorous, groundbreaking comparison and to be comparative in an age of scholarship which focuses primarily on particularity of culture, thought, etc. Moreover, Thurman's early forays into the translation and presentation of Buddhist tantra remain unrecognized, in part because his translations have been circulated among scholars alone, due to restrictions, recently lifted, on the open publishing of 'secret' material. One only need look at the work of his students, some of whom are represented here (Gray, Hartzell, Wedemeyer, Yarnall), to see what a profound legacy of scholarship Thurman has produced with respect to Tantra. Moreover, his close work with Vesna Wallace and Yael Bentor, two other contributors, will reap fruit for years to come, especially with this publishing group, AIBS. Although several pieces are accessible to scholars only (Paul...), each is worth the effort to learn something new and interesting and to put into perspective the profound legacy on Buddhist Studies that Robert Thurman has crafted.
