At the age of seventeen, Joseph, the favorite son of Jacob, faces the wrath of jealousy, hatred, and deceit from his own brothers. He is thrust into a world of slavery, lust, and power. Joseph experiences a culture so different from his own that he must adapt quickly just to survive. He learns to trust in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and be content in the difficult circumstances that challenge him far too often. Narrated by Joseph, Faith-Joseph's Story communicates the power of this young man's faith-faith that began in the midst of a plot to murder him and ends with his rise to power in Egypt. It shows the perseverance one must find to overcome the negative experiences that happen in life, and it provides a testament to the importance of placing complete faith and trust in God. With Bible study materials and a leader's guide included, Faith-Joseph's Story tells how, from the depths of a pit, to the darkness of prison, to the grandeur of a palace, a young man remains committed to God's divine plan.

By Jennifer Smith Beautifully Crafted Novel with Bible study and Leader's Guide All In One!A novel, a Bible study, a leader's guide all in one book?! Yes, it's true! Faith, Joseph's Story, by Sandra Lea Hardage has beautifully crafted the Bible story of Joseph's life written as though it is from his own perspective, while adding a full Bible study AND a leader's guide right in the book!I thought this was a great book! I really enjoyed revisiting the story of Joseph from the Bible and reading it again from a fictional perspective of none other than Joseph himself! I love historically accurate fiction and I thought the book captured Joseph's story in a way that draws the reader in to really consider what it must have been like to be one of twelve sons, and favored by his father. It helped me consider Joseph as a real person and not just a character in a Bible story. I had never given much thought to how many years Joseph was in the Pharaoh's palace before the story reaches its climax. I recommend anyone could read this book and gain a little bit more insight to the real Joseph of the Bible from a fictional perspective. The other great part about this book is the fact that it is actually three books in one! The novel begins on the opening pages but is a quick read and ends on page 67. The rest of the book is a Bible study followed by a Leader's Guide as a companion to the Bible study. This is a great way to take the history of the story and go really in depth into a Bible study of the history of Joseph's family, their family traits, family life, the study of Joseph's dreams, and many more topics. Along the way Sandra also shares a bit of her own faith walk and truths of the Bible regarding the salvation message. If you re looking for an in depth Bible study on the life of Joseph this would be a great one to choose!

While reading this book I felt like I was hearing Joseph telling his story in his own words. I have studied Joseph’s life before but this was really great, getting Joseph’s point of view. Included in this novel was how Joseph put some of the blame of his brother’s jealously on himself because of his pride.Joseph also tells how everything that happened to him, from being put into the pit and sold into slavery to being second in command in Egypt and everything in between , was used by God to save lives and his family. This book is for anyone that wants to understand Joseph’s life and learn how to overcome negative experiences that happen in life , and to put complete faith in God and His divine plan. When I asked to review this book, I thought it was just a novel but when I received it and found it to be a novel and a book study I was excited. This book is divided into two sections, the story and then the Bible Study. How to become a Christian is explained after the novel and before the Bible study.I haven’t really started the Bible story yet, ( just glimpsed through it) but it looks like it will be quite enjoyable. It seems to go back to Abraham and the person doing the study will get a good insight into Joseph’s whole family background. I cannot wait to get started on this study. I am sure whoever studies this particular study will learn more and be able to “Trust “ that God knows what He is doing! Before, I close this review I want to include a direct quote from the book, page 66, that really struck a chord within my heart “The sin that had dwelt in each brother’s heart would require a personal encounter with YHWH. I could offer forgiveness, but unless they made it right with the God who created them, all the jealously, bitterness, guilt, and pain would remain within them the rest of their lives”. Isn’t that true, we have to make things with God ourself our we would have all these things within us too!I received a free copy of this book/Ebook/Product to review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC Regulations. This is not your average book, in it is a novel and a Bible study, which may not seem odd in and of itself but usually the author splits the book and Bible study up so it’s in two different books. I love the idea of having it together, one it makes it so much more affordable to those who can’t buy two books, it also saves on space and also makes it easy to refer back to the novel part without having to have a study, novel, Bible and a notebook. The novel part of the story tells the story of Joseph, you know the one – colorful coat, brothers who hated him because of his cockiness, thrown in a well and sold into slavery……. and I loved that it stayed true to the Biblical and historical account of Joseph – Sandra does not add a lot of detail, except she does add some of the feelings that everyone probably went through – she leaves the rest alone. It’s also relatively short, just 9 chapters that covers 74 pages and that includes the epilogue. I read the novel part within just a couple of hours and it kept my attention through the whole story, but I enjoy the story of Joseph so it was easy enough to stay focused and I like the detail of how each person was feeling and how Sandra added those details without adding to or taking away from the actual Scripture. Each chapter is preceded by a beautiful image depicting what is going to take place in that chapter and adds to the old fashioned feel of the book. The Bible study takes you on an in depth look at the story of Joseph and how his story and his lessons learned can apply to us. Exploring family traits, both his and ours, how he reacted to his brothers and even his time in prison – gives us a glimpse that while Joseph lived several thousand years before us we can still learn a great deal from him and how he reacted to his situations. When we first meet him he is a bit cocky due to the favoritism that this father bestows upon him – in being thrown in a pit and sold he realizes that God is with him but as soon as he is elevated and given power he fails to lean on God and back to the pits he goes. Isn’t that just like us? Leaning on God during the bad times but as soon as things turn around we wrongly believe we can do it on our own. I strongly recommend this Bible study that is grounded firmly in the Word of God and is not ashamed to stand for the Truth contained within.**I was given a copy of this book from Christian Women Affiliate Review Crew in exchange for my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.

"Mankind has always been in need of a leader especially in times of war. That leadership has almost always come in the form of one man or one woman. Leadership by committee usually bows to one individual leader given enough time. And one individual leader can promote good or evil agendas as history records." Charles Fredrikson pens an enlightening look at leadership through the lenses of historical leaders. This historical piece examines the nature of leadership, as Charles Fredrikson unveils in-depth coverage and historical data on world leaders. His straightforward writing style reveals a passion for historical figures; his findings reveal little-known details of prominent historical figures. Jesus and the Art of War is a must read for those who have a passion for historical knowledge, and you'll be impressed by Fredrikson's ability to compound dates and names into a fascinating read with much attention to valuing history. Additionally, the nature of God is evaluated as the supreme leader, and overall valued traits of leaders are incorporated.

The cover is soet of in between a soft and hard cover. It's like a thick, barely flexible surface, which is nice. The pages show step-by-step instructions on how to fold several popular Pokemon, and even include pages with the appropriate colors and patterns for each Pokemon that it gives instructions for. I bough this as a gift for someone, and they love it. I was expecting less from it than it turned out to be.

It's time-consuming and tedious, but the finished product is awesome and he lives feeling accomplished.

After her youngest set off for college, she decided it was time to pursue her childhood dream to become a fiction writer. I am a romantic who likes happy endings, but this ending was just too too perfect. It was definitely time to end the series. I am glad that the character, Mary, did come out of her shell, at last.

Travel Far: A Beginner's Guide to the Out-of-Body Experience, Including First-Hand Accounts and Comprehensive Theory and Methods, by Darryl E. Berry Jr.

Review "I really enjoyed it. Unlike most books in the genre, this one is 'just right' in many respects." "It's just a good, solid well-rounded OBE book with good content." "Berry's approach to OBE practice makes a lot of sense." "My favorite quote from the book is: 'All of our limits are ultimately self-imposed.' (pg. 198)" "This is a good solid OBE book; a well-rounded mix of narratives, theory, techniques and spirituality. The author is not pretentious or esoteric. He comes off as your good friend, not Severus Snape... I give it a big thumbs up." --Robert "Bob" Peterson, author of Out-of-Body Experiences: How to Have Them and What to Expect and Lessons Beyond the Body[Travel Far] starts with a collection of Darryl s personal OBE accounts... While the content of many of these [personal OBE accounts] might be hard to digest, I ve found that the writing style was very believable, it is written just as I would expect somebody to tell a personal story." "Part two is all about the theory and practice of OBE, starting at the very beginning. I ve found this part to be written very well. Both the content and clarity of writing is very good." "If you re interested in the topic of OBE, especially if you want to learn to OBE yourself, this is probably one of the best books available." --Jacob from MindEnergyNet.

From the Author I'm certain that you will enjoy this work. I share great experiences that will motivate you to want to duplicate, and I share with you how you can do that. Enjoy!!

Emil Kapaun—priest, soldier and Korean War hero—was a rare man. He was awarded posthumously the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award, and is also being considered by the Vatican for canonization as a saint.

Just as remarkable are the many non-Catholic witnesses who attest to Father Kapaun's heroism: the Protestants, Jews and Muslims who either served with the military chaplain in the thick of battle or endured with him the incredibly brutal conditions of a prisoner of war camp. These Korean War veterans, no matter their religion, agree that Father Kapaun did more to save lives and maintain morale than any other man they know.

Then there are the alleged miracles the recent healings attributed to Father Kapaun's intercession that defy scientific explanation. Under investigation by the Vatican as a necessary step in the process of canonization, these cures witnessed by non-Catholic doctors are also covered in this book.

In tracking down the story of Father Kapaun for the Wichita Eagle, Wenzl and Heying uncovered a paradox. Kapaun's ordinary background as the son of Czech immigrant farmers in Kansas sowed the seeds of his greatness. His faith, generosity and grit began with his family's humility, thrift and hard work.

"Whether you know nothing about Father Emil Kapaun or have read other books or articles about him, you will be grateful that you took the time to read this one. I am glad that I did."— Most Rev. Michael O. Jackels, Bishop of Wichita

"This is the story about a "Man's Man!" He was a hero. He was holy. He was real. What a great book - I could not put it down and read it in one sitting! Fr. Kapaun's story will inspire you too to live your life for God and others and be the saint that God is calling you to be!"— Fr. Larry Richards, Author, Be A Man!

The Miracle of Father Kapaun: Priest, Soldier and Korean War Hero, by Travis Heying, Roy Wenzl

Review "We need heroes to teach us how to live and decide in the concrete situations of our daily lives. Father Emil Kapaun is a figure whose heroism during the Korean War still serves as a lamp to guide our feet on the path of life. The Miracle of Father Kapaun will introduce you to this inspiring figure of a man for others. His care of the soldiers imprisoned with him inspired hope in them. I invite you to discover a priest, Army Chaplain, and hero on the pages of this book." --Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, Archbishop for the Military Services, USA"The Father Kapuan story has long been in need of more widespread knowledge. It is a priestly life of service and dignity. The record of military chaplains is a special category in the service of God and the men who fight, even a service to their enemies, as is the witness of Father Kapaun's death in a prison camp reminds us." --James V. Schall, S.J., Georgetown University"Father Emil Kapaun was a modern American priest-hero whose unique and inspiring story should be known to every Catholic." --James Hitchcock, Author, History of the Catholic Church

Emil Kapaun's documentary film, visited his parish church and museum, heard homilies centered on his virtues, and have read both newspaper and online accounts of his life. Prior to reading The Miracle of Father Kapaun: Priest, Soldier, and Korean War Hero, I was not sure what else I could learn about the man whom I ask to intercede for me and my family daily.I knew that Fr. Kapaun was a military chaplain and a war hero who had recently been awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Korean War. I also knew that he had been a prisoner of war and had helped his fellow prisoners, using the practical skills he acquired growing up on a farm in Pilsen, Kansas to sustain them during this difficult time. What I did not know about Fr. Kapaun were the intimate details of his life, as described by those closest to him. Nor was I aware of the specifics of the alleged miracles that have transpired in the lives of Kansas residents today. Finally, I was unaware of the fact that the Korean War veterans, who served with him, and whose lives were saved by him, had lobbied the Army for more than 60 years to award Kapaun for his acts of bravery. Authors Roy Wenzl and Travis Heying share all of this and more in their new book, The Miracle of Father Kapaun.Wenzel and Heying have done a thorough job of researching Fr. Kapaun's life, interviewing dozens of men who survived the POW camp because of the courageous acts of this young priest. The POWs share how Kapaun saved hundreds of lives by: repeatedly running through machine gun fire, dragging wounded soldiers to safety, stealing food from his captors to sustain his starving comrades, and shaping roofing tin into cooking pots to boil water, to prevent dysentery. Most of all, when their future appeared hopeless, he gave them hope and a reason to live. Fr. Kapaun's companions portray him as a man who stepped out in faith, performing many astonishing acts of heroism, confounding his captors.Wenzl and Heying are gifted writers who tell a gripping tale that grabbed my attention at the beginning of the book and held it to the end. This story often kept me on the edge of my seat. The book begins with the battle of Unsan (There is a map included to show where it is located). I knew nothing about this battle prior to reading this chapter, but the authors write with such clarity, ease, and realism, that I felt as if I were right there on the battlefield with the soldiers. Their clear and concise writing style as well as Kapaun's intriguing story of both yesterday and today will motivate you to read this book immediately in one sitting, which is possible to do, as it is short. However, you may want to re-read and savor certain sections of the book. At least that is what I did - simply because they contain brilliant quotes from Fr. Kapaun and stunning samples of his writing.Because Fr. Kapaun has not yet been canonized and the alleged miracles are just that until they have been approved by the Church, the authors present a very factual, historical account of Kapaun's life. However, this does not at all detract from the story, but made it all the more interesting for me. What was particularly appealing to me is the fact that the authors present Fr. Kapaun as a very human individual, sharing his foibles and faults, rather than falsely depicting him as a plaster-perfect saint with whom no one can identify or emulate. I also enjoyed the humorous anecdotes that are shared by friends and neighbors that make Fr. Kapaun so genuine and so likeable. In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this inspirational and gripping account of Venerable Fr. Emil Kapaun, Catholic priest, Korean War hero, and recipient of the nation's highest award for bravery. He was a man of few words, but much action. Fr. Kapaun is someone we all can model ourselves after through our loving service to those in our everyday lives. The Miracle of Father Kapaun is an excellent book that I highly recommend for both Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

Conyers Wenzl and Heying have written a warm story about a man that you will feel is your good friend by the time you reach the last page! This writing team have that gift of weaving facts of history, stories shared by Kapaun's friends and fellow POWs, and his unique spirituality into a story that you will need "just another minute" before putting down. And the last several chapters will absolutely keep you in your seat!Father Kapaun (Kuh-PAWN), Servant of God, comes alive in these pages that is well worth sharing with all Christians, and even non-believers. This pipe-smoking "priest, soldier and friend" had a very personable sense of humor! Read to find out how he uses Latin to make his fellow soldiers smile. He encouraged friends to ask St. Dismas to help him become a good thief so that he could steal food for the starving prisoners. ALL of the pictures show him with a warm smile...and some with him holding a pipe that had been shot in half...but he was still smiling. It is easy to preach on the subjects of love and forgiveness from a beautiful church pulpit with friends smiling and listening. Kapaun preached from such pulpits in Kansas, but also shared his message of God's love for all mankind, His call to us to forgive others and to love our enemies from a make-do pulpit within the prison camp while he was cold, weak and sick. He was speaking to a group of men who were starving and lonely for friends and family while their enemies watched from their posts. Father Kapaun brought these POWs Jesus and brought them the hope they needed to face another day. Of this there can be no doubt as these writers have interviewed some of those POWs that lived to tell his story. Several survived with gratitude to Father for saving their lives, and he is credited with saving perhaps hundreds of lives during his time in the Korean War. Those friends still living were greatly pleased to see Father Kapaun receive the United States Medal of Honor, April 2012.Father knew no denominational bounds. He sought, as Jesus did, to be a friend first and then to, perhaps, "offer a little prayer" for any and all his comrades. I was touched that he offered Last Rites in English (when they were most generally spoken in Latin) to those who were close to death, so that everyone could hear and understand the words of promise and comfort. He brought the Holy Eucharist right out on the field to the soldiers and used his jeep as an altar. He was quoted as saying: "Christ's works testified to what He was; our works will testify to what we are." (page 31). Father indeed practiced what he preached through his works and ended up giving his life for what he believed in: love of God, neighbor and forgiving our enemies. While he is not yet considered a Saint by the Roman Catholic Church, I have to wonder if someday he won't be considered the Saint of Forgiveness, as he has shown us it is a reality that Jesus can live within the heart of man to the point he can ask forgiveness of his enemies as he dies at their hands. This book, along with Msgr. Arthur Tonne's "The Story of Chaplain Kapaun" which contains a good number of letters from Father Kapaun give readers a good picture of a fine Kansas Man of God. After you get to "know" him through these pages, you will want to ask him to carry your worries and prayers to God. He is not only an outstanding American Soldier, but a Soldier of God as well.

By DeekinChip Other reviews are critical of the writing; it might be easier to take if one realizes this is a book created from newspaper articles. And there are some formatting errors (specifically, section breaks that fall a paragraph too soon in the final chapters). But it isn't about all that. The story of Fr. Emil Kapaun is an inspiration. Any soldier or former soldier who has studied combat, trained for combat, or most importantly, *experienced* combat will appreciate the courage and plain divine intervention required for a man to repeatedly walk beyond his lines to rescue wounded comrades, under fire, without being wounded. But the really miraculous work done by Fr. Kapaun is recounted by his fellow prisoners of war. Again, any soldier, sailor or airman who has learned the Code Of Conduct ("I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces which guard or country and our way of life...") will recognize its genesis in the conduct of the good Father. His bravery, ingenuity, and contribution to the survival of his comrades, even after his death, are the embodiment of the Code.He was a great man. And if the miracles being attributed to his intervention are found credible...he will be a Saint.Father Emil Kapaun, pray for us!

How did human beings acquire imaginations that can conjure up untrue possibilities? How did the Universe become self-aware? In The Runes of Evolution, Simon Conway Morris revitalizes the study of evolution from the perspective of convergence, providing us with compelling new evidence to support the mounting scientific view that the history of life is far more predictable than once thought.   A leading evolutionary biologist at the University of Cambridge, Conway Morris came into international prominence for his work on the Cambrian explosion (especially fossils of the Burgess Shale) and evolutionary convergence, which is the process whereby organisms not closely related (not monophyletic), independently evolve similar traits as a result of having to adapt to similar environments or ecological niches.   In The Runes of Evolution, he illustrates how the ubiquity of convergence hints at an underlying framework whereby many outcomes, not least brains and intelligence, are virtually guaranteed on any Earth-like planet. Conway Morris also emphasizes how much of the complexity of advanced biological systems is inherent in microbial forms.   By casting a wider net, The Runes of Evolution explores many neglected evolutionary questions. Some are remarkably general. Why, for example, are convergences such as parasitism, carnivory, and nitrogen fixation in plants concentrated in particular taxonomic hot spots? Why do certain groups have a particular propensity to evolve toward particular states?   Some questions lead to unexpected evolutionary insights: If bees sleep (as they do), do they dream? Why is that insect copulating with an orchid? Why have sponges evolved a system of fiber optics? What do mantis shrimps and submarines have in common? If dinosaurs had not gone extinct what would have happened next? Will a saber-toothed cat ever re-evolve?   Cona Morris observes: “Even amongst the mammals, let alone the entire tree of life, humans represent one minute twig of a vast (and largely fossilized) arborescence. Every living species is a linear descendant of an immense string of now-vanished ancestors, but evolution itself is the very reverse of linear. Rather it is endlessly exploratory, probing the vast spaces of biological hyperspace. Indeed this book is a celebration of how our world is (and was) populated by a riot of forms, a coruscating tapestry of life.”  The Runes of Evolution is the most definitive synthesis of evolutionary convergence to be published to date.

The Runes of Evolution: How the Universe became Self-Aware, by Simon Conway Morris

Review

"The runes of evolution spell out a surprising message: Some evolutionary outcomes are virtually inevitable. Or, so goes the argument of Cambridge palaeontologist Simon Conway Morris, resting on two key premises:

  • Evolution repeats itself in unexpected ways:  Very different lineages evolve to have similar traits. Conway Morris calls this 'convergence.'
  • Precursors of complex traits, such as a nervous system, are found in much simpler organisms. Conway Morris calls this 'evolutionary inherency.' The premises are supported with a wealth of data—thousands of references across the book’s 27 chapters.
  • The intriguing tale is told by way of a journey over many different areas in which we find convergence and inherency, with touches of humour along the way." —Zachary Ardern, BioLogos

“Conway Morris’s exploration of the phenomenon of convergence in biological evolution is rife with implications for Christian theology. It lends credence to a Christian view of God’s providential action in history, and it supports an ecological view of the interdependence of all things in God’s creation. It also fits with a scriptural account of a story-shaped world.” —Ian Curran, Christian CenturyThis book was presumably written by Morris more for fellow natural scientists than for philosophers and theologians, but in each case so as to prove that his hypothesis of ongoing convergence in evolution is not a series of fortuitous coinci-dences but empirical evidence of established patterns or in-built mechanisms within the evolutionary process. Three hundred pages of text with double columns of print on each page and 150 pages of endnotes make that clear. Names of different species, genera, families, orders, classes, and so on turn up on virtually every page so that the nonprofessional reader ends up hunting for summary statements by Morris at the end of each major subdivision within the 26 chapters. Yet despite its obvious density and degree of detail for the ordinary reader, the implications of this book for philosophical/theological understanding of the God–world relationship and for the classic distinction between the natural and the supernatural within creation are in my judgment very significant. —Joseph A. Bracken, SJ, Xavier University, Cincinnati

About the Author Simon Conway Morris is a leading evolutionary biologist and best known for his work on the Cambrian explosion (especially the Burgess Shale) and evolutionary convergence. He is also active in public outreach, especially in the area of science and religion where he also published extensively. A frequent guest on radio, and also with many television appearances, he has pioneered an extremely successful website on convergence (www.mapoflife.org) and is now constructing a new one addressing the wider issues of evolution. Based in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge, where he holds the chair in evolutionary palaeobiology, he is also a fellow of St. John’s College. His work has taken him to many parts of the world, including China, Mongolia, and Greenland.

An imperfect mixture of biology and philosophy By j a haverstick Our author is the an urbane and witty Cambridge paleontologist, and as with others of the elite from his island he has two last names, "Conway Morris". The island in question is a little north of Europe and called Scingland. Conway Morris is from the southern half it, called England, with which the historically minded reader may be familiar for leaving the planet in a shambles after its colonial ventures a century ago. He made his reputation with his exposition of the famous Burgess shale animals, a reason for me to buy this book. It is published by the Templeton Foundation, an organization with a mixed reputation. It is dedicated to investigating the relationship between science and religion. Conway Morris is a Christian and finds in biology reason to support his religious views. None of this bothers me.The book takes the form of page after page of cases of convergent evolution in (mainly) the animal kingdom. In this sense it has a gee whiz quality as we meet scores of most remarkable life forms. Because he uses terms both biological and taxonomic which are academic, several reviewers have commented on the difficulty of reading it. For me, I was familiar with a lot of it and a Latin and Greek education helps. Just like they said it would in 1950. But anyhow, you really don’t have to stop and look up everything as the jist of what’s being said and the kind of animal involved is almost always clear enough. Additionally, by page 90 I was doing a lot of skimming since the point was by now incredibly obvious: evolution is not a matter of a random walk ( a la Gould) but exhibits a strong"directionality", illustrated by the convergences of features in different organisms. These are ubiquitous because the environment on this planet which different forms of life occupy demand similar solutions. This may strike the reader as somewhat unearthshaking, but as Conway Morris, remarks, it can cause spittle to form on the lips of many evolutionists. And to talk of a "direction" in evolution is pretty unusual. I think C-W makes a provocative case here. These convergences are categorized in the first dozen chapters, teeth, limbs, eyes, and so on. He is at pains to dismiss the assumption that the specific convergences result from deep structure (say of protists) but more generated by environmental factors. As he mentions, however, many of the basic protein forms are already present early on (chrystallins, opsins, etc.).I started paying detailed attention again toward the end when we started to talk about brains and intelligence. That’s what Conway seems to think the goal of the whole shebang is. But you really have to pay attention to the more philosophical remarks dropped in between the expositions every few pages. He’s kind of negative, I think, about creationism and goal oriented evolution. The point seems to be that it’s the environment that presents the constraints which result the general types that many different living things have on this planet. So it’s a curious mix of teleology and determinism, with, it seemed to me, the determinism being the stronger flavor. Even though awareness is the operative goal all along, it's not exactly a vanilla teleology, and that's the point of the case studies. I googled this guy for a little more background. Apparently he is of the opinion that life is rare in the galaxy or universe, I would agree, but that when it does occur it will take forms much like those found here. I would disagree with the latter. Right now, it's just speculation. We don't know anything about what "life" may be possible in other extraterretial locales.I would also remark that the section of color photos of animals in the center of the book seeems to function as just relief from the densly packed prose. I think this is a book that could really have benefitted from line drawings, charts, etc. within the text for some visual help with the exposition, not color animal photos! In his suggested view that life is inevitably targeted at reality becoming aware of itself, well, there are plenty of cowboys at that campfire: Bergson, Whitehead, de Chardin, Schopenhauer, and, wait, who’re they over there in the shadows? Is that Hegel? God, I think I even see some Neo-Platonists at the chuck wagon......The questionof dircetionality/determinism reminded me of some other hotly contested issues: altruism/selfishness; genetic evolution/phenotype evoluution; nature/nurture. Is there some directionality to life on this planet as with all other chemical processes? Or is it all what randomly comes up, snowball earth, meteors..? It all depends on how we define our terms. I'm not sure how much deep science or, worse, metaphysics all this can support. When we get to life elsewhere, this doesn't help at all. And, by the way, if we take Conway Morris' guess to its conclusion, we'll discover that, as he says, the fields of consciousness of organizisms are basically subjective, so how the universe is becoming self-aware is totally a matter of private sensations, isn't it? Is Morris a realist, in the philosophic sense? Am I or a paramecium aware of reality or, as Morris says at one point, "qualia"? Big difference. You might say the universe only is aware of itself thru the veil of maya. A perennial speculation. C-M takes some stabs at this problem in the second to last chapter where he proposes perhaps the most astonishing convergence of all, Plato and Hume. The thinking seems to be that when you, a parrot, a wasp, and I experience ,say, red, we are all seeing the same thing - a universal feature of reality. This is how the universe becomes self-aware. This was a very provocative couple of paragraphs. It's pure philosophy, not biology. I think if our paleontologist would stroll across the green to the philosophy faculty (especially at Cambridge!) he would find it a hard sell, but that doesn't make it uninteresting. I am sympathetic to his readiness to go all the way down with awareness. In fact he even suggests one celled organisms may be aware. If you are a beekeeeper like me, you have no doubt that the bees are as conscious as the keeper is. A nineteenth century biologist, I forget who, remarked that if amoebae would be the size of dogs, we'd be attributing all sorts of mental attributes to them.I think the problem for the reader is whether this a natural history book aimed at enlightening her on the evolutionary subject of convergence or is it a really aimed at proffering a "theory" about the ultimate nature of the universeI? If the former, it’s way too detailed and academic: a list of examples which, as other reviewers have remarked, becomes tedious. If the latter, well, it really needs a lot clearer and convincing argumentation. I honestly believe most hard scientists are a lot smarter than I, but when they - and I include the swarm of books on ultimate physics and second big offender, neoroscience and consciousness - I am usually surprised at how unsophisticated they are. A cool worldview has nothing more to recommend it than the next cool worldview. Much as I enjoyed Conway Morris's guesses at ultimate reality, I'm afraid I'd have to include this book in the scientist-as-amatuer-philosopher genre. But as an old philosophy guy by training and a natural history and evolution buff by inclination, I found this book very thought provoking. If that were my standard, I’d give it a five. The philosophy of biology, which I thought was bit of a poor sister in the philosophy department long ago when it seemed organisms were just bags of chemicals maybe formed by lightning in the ancient atmosphere, has turned out to be a lot more engaging now that we’ve learned so much more in the last 50 yrs. A lot more understanding has led to a lot more mysteries. That’s science, fer ya!Looking at some of Morris' publications, though, I think I’d suggest Life's Solutions or Deep Structure for the reader with a more general interest.

From what I understand, his main claim to fame for a layperson’s audience was his analysis of fossils from the Burgess Shale, arguably made famous by the late Stephen Jay Gould. In particular, Conway Morris is an evolutionary biologist with a deep interest on the phenomenon of evolutionary convergence (EC), and this book is an embarrassment of riches as far as examples of EC is concerned. I immensely enjoyed the wide variety of examples and I have to say that I learned quite a few new things. The book is well-documented and thorough if nothing else. The endnotes section is a good 155 pages long! I was rather amused when I saw that the first two endnotes of the ***Introduction***, which were approximately 2 1/4 and 3 pages long respectively! Forgive me if I am ignorant in these matters, but I think footnotes and endnotes should be short. The notes in this book must be some kind of a record or something. This is a minor point though. Overall, I enjoyed the book. However… there are a few negatives that didn’t let me enjoy this work to the fullest. For example:**The writing style is convoluted, and I do not mean technical or scientific, in fact, the material does not warrant a degree in evolutionary biology or even in the hard sciences. The thing is that as one of the other reviews in the “…azon” site said, you need a dictionary to look for terms quite frequently. This took some of the pleasure away because one almost cannot read in a steady flow. It is almost as if the author’s attitude was something like “…look at me, aren’t I erudite?” He is famous enough to need this validation, so the reason for this style is a mystery to me.**How many times does the word “coruscant” or “coruscating” is needed in a single book?**Because of the above points, this book is a puzzle to me because it is not overtly technical, yet it is certainly not for the casual science reader either. Ironically, I had a much better time with his previous book, “Life’s Solution”, an explicitly scientific book on the same topic.**The references were embedded in the endnotes rather than alphabetically, which made really annoying to look for a specific reference, and a science no-no.**There were quite a few typos liberally distributed throughout the book, including an unforgivable and particularly irritating one that I noticed by chance in the index: “Puerto Rica” instead of “Puerto Rico”, which happens to be the place I was born at … (:-)…**There were several allusions to less than kind book reviewers. Preemptive strike or the were the reviewers the reason why this ostensibly scientific book was not published by a university press?**On that note, the publisher, Templeton Press, explicitly fosters an understanding between science and religion, which is great! But in some places within the text, the author flirts with the possibility that consciousness (whatever that is), is “accessed” rather than “produced” by nervous systems, a point that will surely lead to less than kind scientific reviews, particularly from neuroscientists.**I was hopeful and excited to read chapter 21 on neurobiology. He mentioned flatworms and several points on the evolution of the nervous system. However, I was disappointed not to see my own popular science book listed in the notes or anywhere else (I admit to some ego bruising there), because I made use of some of the examples that the author used, and my book was published more than a year ago by a well-known university press, so I do not think that it was that bad …**The subtitle “How the universe became self-aware” was not alluded at all in the book (did I miss it?).Overall, The Runes of Evolution is full of fascinating information, but its style and execution took some luster off it. It is not a book for the typical science enthusiast who may be interested in this matter.

Falk With thousands of references, this book is a veritable encyclopedia--full of examples of convergent evolution in biological history. In essence, the history of life can be thought of as a huge set of parallel searches exploring design-space and arriving at optimum structures and physiologies necessary to carry out particular tasks in a manner that maximizes reproductive capacity. Each search through design-space is limited in some manner by structural and physiological constraints imposed by each lineage’s specific history. Over and over again, Conway Morris demonstrates, the searches yield similar solutions, albeit each with it’s own peculiar tint, a reflection of its previous evolutionary history. The eye of the octopus and the eye of the vertebrate, for example, are amazingly similar, even though they each bear certain trademark differences--a result of the very different trajectories taken to arrive at the same solution. The process by which parallel pathways lead to similar end solutions is called convergent evolution. This book is likely the most complete summary of the collection of life's converging systems ever written. No one has examined the question as broadly or as thoroughly as Conway Morris: There are a limited number of solutions to design-problems and repeatedly, ancestral lineages independently come up with almost the same biological solution to the same ecological challenge.Written in Conway Morris’s inimitable low key style and generously sprinkled with examples of his subtle humor, it is almost possible at times to forget that one is reading a highly sophisticated scientific review. But at those times, no sooner does one break into a full smile or even an out-loud chuckle, that Conway-Morris throws in a taxonomic term or the name of some complicated molecule. With that, we’re back to reality-- a sort of reminder that we’re actually sitting at the feet of one of the world’s most knowledgeable experts learning detailed intricacies of events set in motion hundreds of millions of years ago. The book is a joy to read--likely the first time, I've ever found myself laughing out loud while reading a book heavily embedded in animal taxonomy. Indeed, I doubt it will ever happen again.Conway Morris has a knack for revealing the *real* purpose in writing his books in his sub-titles. For example, for his other especially noteworthy book, he chose the sub-title, “Inevitable Humans in a Lonely Universe.” It is not clear on the basis of the scientific evidence presented in that book that the arrival of humans on earth was inevitable. In fact, based on scientific data alone, most evolutionary biologists would say the complete opposite: humans are here by luck. Humans only arose once and, as a species, they are highly unique. How does one measure the probability of a singularity? But Conway Morris goes against the grain and there is more to his thinking than biology alone—although that the real shaping of that grain, he barely addresses. This time he has chosen the sub-title, “How the Universe became Self-Aware.” So the book is really, in Conway Morris’s mind, about the development of consciousness. This is interesting since he says very little (nothing, actually) about theories of consciousness, just as his previous book said very little to directly address the scientific arguments that humans were not inevitable. In this book, Conway Morris makes it clear that he believes in an external reality that is over and above the material reality studied by science. He doesn’t, as I see it, think that consciousness “emerges” from within material reality. Rather, material reality “discovers”, repeatedly discovers actually, this external reality through its search engine. Indeed, he suggests that the reason why little progress has been made (as he sees it!) in understanding consciousness is because it is based in a non-material reality that exists outside of the material reality we study in science. Near the end, Conway Morris makes the following statement:“Suppose mind is not only independent but also preexistent to matter? If that was the case, then evolution is simply the process to discover mind. How then might we distinguish the process of emergence as against discovery? The former seems far more sensible but appears to run into some intractable difficulties. If naturalistic explanations run into a dead end, then does evolution contain any clues as to how the Universe became self-aware? It is the topic of another book, but perhaps a start is to suggest that in the end the natural world lets us down: Paradoxically what we don’t know is more helpful that we believe we do know.”Here again, Conway Morris leaves mainstream science to venture into another realm—other ways of understanding when one is at the boundary of what we can and cannot know through the process of scientific discovery. I’m not sure he’s right in his implication that studies of consciousness have run into intractable difficulties (see, for example, “Consciousness and the Social Brain” by Michael S.A. Graziano). Here he begins to sound like the intelligent design proponents, or the “god of the gaps” advocates from whom he clearly wants to distance himself. However, the really good thing is that Conway Morris hints (in the above quote) that rather than leave the gap in place, the process of beginning to fill it will be the topic of another book. He doesn’t specifically say that the book to start filling the gap will be his own, but given my deep respect for his work, I sincerely hope it is.In any case, given our current knowledge, I don’t think either of Conway Morris’s sub-titles emerge from scientific investigation alone. Science doesn’t show that humans are inevitable and science doesn’t tell the whole story of how the universe became self-aware. There are, however, other ways of coming to know. It is these other ways that point convincingly to the basis of human existence and it is these other ways that give us the deepest understanding of the basis of the universe’s becoming self-aware. There is a great need for someone to elaborate on that within the context of our knowledge about evolution. I, for one, look forward to the next book that Conway Morris hints may already be ruminating in his brilliant mind.

He is so ready for and into board books so this one is great. We have already 'done' Hungry Caterpillar board book so this Christmas one fits in so well. Board books are especially great for little hands that have not learned to be careful with the pages yet. This book is colorful and just a lot of fun. The counting is also a fun activity. I think it will become a very, very early Christmas gift because I want to share it with our boy now. Eric Carle has created another great book for us to enjoy. Thank you, Mr. Carle!

By J.Prather The Very Hungry Caterpillar's Christmas 123 is an excellent counting book and a fun choice for your toddler this Christmas. This board book is perfect for beginning counters, as it features large, vibrant pictures that are easily defined and counted, large depictions of each number, and large number words. The designers make excellent use of white space, ensuring that Carle's distinctive illustrations really pop. This book counts from one to ten, and uses well known holiday symbols. Kids count two Christmas trees, three snowmen and four holly leaves. Five snowflakes lead to six Christmas cakes, and seven penguins give way to eight colorful stars. We end up at 10 Christmas presents and our caterpillar friend has turned into a beautiful butterfly! Each number spread also features our favorite caterpillar friend, and kids will have fun finding the caterpillar on each page. Heavy, sturdy board pages will guarantee that this book will survive many repeat readings. An excellent choice for any toddler's stocking!

On each page there are Christmas items for children to count, the items are spelled out in nice black print (Christmas trees, snowmen, penguins, stars, etc.), there is the number printed out in letters and then there is also the number printed out in numerical format. That is what makes this a great book. Although this book only goes to the number ten, I love that it has everything included on each page. Children can see that eight means 8, that six means 6 and that nine means 9, the sooner they can learn these, the better. I love the black simple text that spell out each illustration, this also helps the child understand letter formation, that words are made up of letters and hopefully they will begin to recognize letters and sounds. These words might also become the child’s sight words. The illustrations are bright and simple too. The hungry caterpillar makes his appearance on every page and on the last page like in his famous book; he is no longer a hungry caterpillar. What a great addition to your library.I want to thank YABC for a copy of this novel for I received this book as a part of YABooksCentral.com 12 Days of Christmas. This is my own opinion of this children’s book.

Blake In his book “Power to Deliver: A Guide to Spiritual Warfare and Freedom” Stephen Beauchamp relates the story of a radical encounter with Jesus at the time of his salvation and of how he was miraculously delivered from demonic bondage by the power of the Holy Spirit. He tells of his years of training in deliverance ministry at the Brownsville Revival School of Ministry and his three month internship ministry in Paris, France. He has since gained over ten years of experience in deliverance ministry and currently serves as director of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance training at the International House of Prayer University in Kansas City, Missouri. He equips leaders and pastors with solid ministry tools for strengthening their pastoral and deliverance ministries.Beauchamp carefully develops and defines the meaning of “power” in the Biblical context and establishes evidence for a theology of present day operation of the gifts of the Spirit, the nature and character of God, and manifestations of the Spirit. In the final chapters of the book Beauchamp looks at the reality of spiritual warfare, demonic strongholds, and operating in a deliverance ministry. He helps the reader understand their identity in Christ: as sons and daughters of God, as the bride of Christ, and as the priesthood of believers. He writes with clarity, transparency, integrity, sensitivity and authority.“Power to Deliver: A Guide to Spiritual Warfare and Freedom” is a written for anyone seeking spiritual health, wholeness, and restoration. This is a book you will want to revisit frequently to review insights and perspectives on spiritual warfare and to pursue the power of God for your calling to deliverance ministry.A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes.
