The first hand stories from around the world captured my attention, but I also found direct applicability of the content in everyday relationships. For the many in our own country that have rejected established church, this book provides a message of hope towards a deeper, life transforming relationship with Christ. It is a book for "thinkers" - you may well wrestle with some of the ideas; and a book for "dreamers" - those who dream crazy ideas of how to reach those who have rejected religion, but still find Jesus attractive. Ultimately it is a book about Jesus - that he is greater, more attractive, more pre-eminent, more winsome than we ever realized! The book has challenged me... but it's now a favorite... one of my top 5 ever! read it!

Bryan causes readers to think about how someone becomes a follower of Jesus and how that is lived out. God is at work in the world today, and sometimes that looks different than a typical North American believer might expect. Readers will find some ideas to agree with, some ideas to disagree with ,and some ideas to think about.

By Mary Lou's Reviews Bryan Bishop’s 2015 book, Boundless, chronicles the journeys of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Native Americans who come into a relationship with Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, but choose to stay within the context of their world religion and not take on the name “Christian.” The reasons in all these cases is the believers’ choice to separate themselves from the Western face of Christianity predominant in their culture and the negative implications of the name “Christian.” As Bishop says: “For many Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist people, to become ‘Christian’ means to leave behind their own cultural identity and to join that [perceived] immoral Western way of life. It means joining a foreign culture just as much as it means becoming a believer in the teachings of the Bible…If people from these community-oriented cultures…no longer have to take on the label ‘Christian’ to become ‘one who belongs to Christ,’ that change alone could remove an enormous barrier” [to their conversion] (p.17).What is fascinating about Bishop’s book is his sense that “We are in the midst of a bursting out of creativity in faith in Christ. It’s happening in places most of us haven’t seen. What’s happening holds the promise for new dimensions of faith in Christ as we see that faith lived out in diverse ways in other cultures” (p.19)… When people have tried to obey the Bible within their own culture, without having to join the ‘Christian’ culture, they have begun to follow Christ in new ways. Faith is breaking out of its colonial box” (p.30).Bishop describes many of these converts’ conversions and current spiritual practices to help readers see the legitimacy of their relationship with Jesus. Missionary researchers I queried, who are currently concentrating of God’s work in the Middle East, validated the fact that large numbers of people are coming to life-changing faith in Jesus Christ in these movements. Still, debate rages about the theological foundations these converts have in scripture, whether they are becoming syncretists and thus dilute the gospel, and whether they honor God as they attend the mosque or recite Hindu chants in various cultural practices. Bishop admits that these are legitimate concerns, and that there is the possibility of many errors, as people (nationals and missionaries alike) journey down this very different approach to being Christian within another world religion. But he thinks the journey is worthwhile and is reaping eternal fruit. His book will stretch the theological presuppositions of many Christians, but it is a stretch worth considering. A must read in order to grasp new approaches to God’s work among people in other world religions and cultures.
