Another wonderful Harry Potter film companion By Parka [[VIDEOID:554d4f2ba26e7fdd6de06e1823f481]]I did not get the Collector's Edition of Harry Potter Page to Screen so I'm glad that those bundled books are now sold separately, and I also saved some money in the process.The book's a 208-page hardcover with a cover that's designed with the same style as the other Harry Potter film companion books, such as Harry Potter: Page to Screen, Harry Potter: The Creature Vault and Harry Potter: Magical Places. There are nice graphic elements and embossed gold text. Very classy.From what I can see, this seems like the updated book to the character book from the collector's edition. I saw some pages of the book from the collector's edition and the layout looks different but content is the same. Also, there isn't much duplicated content from Harry Potter: Page to Screen.This book focuses on the characters and their costumes, and each is given good coverage in terms of the space devoted, photographs, artworks and writeup. This book covers the human characters so you won't see any creatures of Dobby. There are also students from other schools, the teaching staff and of course Lord Voldemort and his evil gang of Death Eaters. There are also sections talking about the wands, and how they apply makeup, such as to make Harry disfigured when hit by the Stinging Jinx.There are lots of information and I enjoyed reading about how they come up with the design and look for the characters.It's an insightful book that all Harry Potter fans must have. Well-made with tons of great photos, concept art, and costume sketches By Jeremy This is the third book in a series that includes Harry Potter: The Creature Vault and Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films. It's really well made with a lot of great photos of the cast, concept art, and a ton of neat costume sketches showing how the filmmakers imagined the characters. There's also a lot about the different character props (there's a little bit on each character's wand, for example). The concept art is all awesome—there's an image of Hermione as a polyjuice-potioned cat, the Weasley twins flying around the great hall, and a bunch of creepy Voldemort drawings, for example.

Harry Potter: Character Vault By JMM [[VIDEOID:b5737bac118356844b0e59192cedd553]]"Harry Potter: The Character Vault" is a fascinating book that details the characters from the films.Everyone is included - Harry, Ron, Hermoine, Snape, Dumbledore, Voldemort, etc. The main characters get 4-5 pages each, while minor characters usually get a single 2-page spread.The book profiles each character, and the text from Jody Revenson (author of many previous Potter books, including Magical Places) is insightful and well written. For some characters, there are a few words about the actor as well as his/her casting and process. But most of the text is dedicated to discussing the look of the characters; that is, how they are translated visually from the page to the screen. This means discussion about costumes, makeup, hairstyling, and props.You'll find a lot of great images in the book, including some fantastic concept art (usually printed full-page) and unit photography. Again, most of the images are related to costumes and props -- school and Quidditch uniforms; Yule Ball gowns; wand designs; the sorting hat; Death Eater masks; and more. In reading through the book, you really gain an appreciation for the intricate work done to create each character's wardrobe.If you own the Harry Potter Page to Screen Collector's Edition, then you'll notice some similarity between this book and the 'Wizard Wear & Muggle Attire' book from that set. But even if you own that set, there's new content in the Character Vault that would make it a worthy purchase.Included within the book are two pull-out posters: one featuring the Order of the Phoenix, and the other featuring the Death Eaters.This is an excellent resource for fans of the Harry Potter film franchise. It will especially be of interest to those who enjoy the art of costume design.

Excellent resource for thorough study of the Bible By Darlene Reisenbigler This study guide is an excellent resource for anyone that wants to know and understand the Bible and be able to retain what they have learned. It goes beyond many of the guides to Bible study that don't go deep enough to benefit the reader.The different steps that are suggested, and explained in ways that are easy to follow, help the reader reach their goal of uncovering the truths ofscripture, understanding it's meaning and then being able to retain what has been studied. The majesty of the book in its original Hebrew is missing. ( I have read the book in the Hebrew. ) The notes, a major reason I purchased the book, were cumbersome to access. I am in sure that those notes read more easily in a non-and Kindle format.

About the Author Josh Packard is a professor of sociology at the University of Northern Colorado and the well-published author of numerous academic articles, reviews, and the book, The Emerging Church. He's also an active church member and has a deep desire to understand the widespread phenomenon of church decline.  He can be found at joshpackard.com.Ashleigh Hope is the process of gaining her Ph.D. in Sociology at Vanderbilt University where she researches topics in the areas of religion, community, and health. She is currently a member of a  church in Nashville, and is interested in the various religious and life perspectives that exist in- and outside of the modern congregation.

A New Exodus Out of the American Church By Jeff Cook Few books have disturbed me as much as Josh Packard’s Church Refugees.Many of us have become familiar with the “Nones” (those who select “none” when asked their religious afflation) and their increase over the past 20 years. Packard describes a different, trending phenomenon: “The Dones”, those who have decided “their spiritual lives are better off lived outside organized religion.”Packard unveils what many of us in Churchworld have been experiencing as a trickle for years: the most committed church attenders—those who have given most, prayed longest, served for years, and have been in the most important meetings—are the ones leaving our churches. After a year of qualitative research, conducting a hundred interviews, Packard concludes that the Dones are not leaving because they hate God or Christ’s priorities; the Dones uniformly report that they are leaving church to save their faith.Packard argues the church in America is not the European model, and its death will not be due to stagnation. America is an innovative society, but if the American church cannot keep “its most committed, devoted, and energetic followers, then its destined to become a greatly diminished social force.” This is no small observation. Where analyzing the Nones is like looking at a sever burn that on the surface looks bad but over time may heal, the Dones are like a diagnosis of cancer. Some of the people most essential for the American church’s lasting health are leaving and the reasons are documented and would require major systemic change.Note, the Dones are not the free-riders. They are the folks who showed up every week and gave regularly, and they are not leaving because of the apparent dominance of conservative theology or well-publicized sex scandals. Rather, Packard summarizes, “the story of the dechurched is a story of modern religious organizations and institutions stifling people’s ability to engage with each other and their community.”So why are the Dones leaving? Packard argues,• The Dones say they left because of the judgmental posture of church people individually and collectively which assaulted the communal experience they longed for.• The Dones say they left because they are tired of trying to serve Jesus through the bureaucratic methods of church organizations which stifled progress and often gave little attention to what they cared for most. Many wished to build the Kingdom but were only offered opportunities to build someone’s church empire.• The Dones say they left because they want to answer questions about God through dialogue and struggle, not though prepackaged lectures and the predetermined positions of their community.• And the Dones say they left because their church only understood “morality” in terms of substance abuse and sexual activity with a common disregard to systemic issues of equality, poverty and unjust economics.Note, Packard is not a progressive commentator. Packard is a sociologist presenting data from interviews. He is not advancing his own gripes about church life (he presently attends and is active in a church). Instead, his book outlines what those who have already left say about why they left and why they are not likely to return.As a practitioner, this is the most challenging book I’ve read in some time and churches like mine—what may be termed emerging churches—are not immune. Normally when reading books on the failures of Churchword, I am part of the critics circle, but not here. Packard puts his finger on spots my church and most of those I know deeply struggle.

Dr. Josh Packard and Ashleigh Hope have undertaken a sociological study of “The Dones.” That unique group of people who have been deeply engaged in the church, who have given themselves to serve and share, but now have left the local church and are not looking to return. They have given their time, energy, resources, wisdom and heart to the work of the church, for years, many of them for a lifetime, but now they are “done.”After interviews with over 200 “Dones,” Packard and Hope conclude that most of them don’t want to leave the church. They don’t walk away impulsively or without great deal of thought and struggle. And there are many things they love about the church but a number of things cause them to flee, for (in their language) their own spiritual health and wellbeing. Most notable among these two things is 1) the conclusion that most of the time, energy, resources and efforts of the church go into sustaining the organization that is the church; 2) the structure of most local congregations is such that they allow for no real individual creativity, passion and personal growth in identifying and deploying the gifts which God has given them.Most Dones, after many years of trying to improve and correct those structural challenges finally give up and are “done” with church. But they are not done with Jesus. They are not done with service. They are not done with the community they love and cherish. They simply find other ways to experience and express those things.Packard and Hope begin to explore ways to approach and engage the “Dones.” More importantly, they give those in church leadership an insight into the challenges faced by those who lead local congregations in engaging and retaining this very important group of church members.Church Refugees is well worth the read for anyone who cares about the American Church, is frustrated with its decline and is eager to explore what the church might look like in the decades ahead.

By John Hawthorne This book is a sociological report on The Dones: people who have been active in church life but have removed themselves from the institutional church. Drawing on about 100 interviews with people who were even in staff positions and no longer active in church, there are some important patterns that emerge.They placed a high value on community, on mission, and on authenticity. But over time, it seemed that the institutional church made these lofty goals difficult if not impossible to achieve. Those who left church were not likely to do so because of theological differences but because they weren’t allowed a safe place to discuss differences. This is an important distinction. It’s not that they didn’t believe Christian doctrine but wanted to explore its ramifications rather than being preached at.This circles back to issues of authentic community. When this is missing, when people can’t find expression for their missional passions, when church leadership engages in oversimplification or hypocrisy, the costs of remaining become far too great. In reading the book, I was struck with the notion that the denial of authenticity may have exponential cost structures — each infraction magnifies the ones that have gone before. Every squelching of community creates a deeper longing for that one community that meant so much.I want to underscore that the respondents in Church Refugees bear absolutely no resemblance to the characterizations so easily made by bloggers (not me) about people who want an easy faith and simply drift away because postmodernity is easier. These folks struggled. They had a vision of what the church could and should be and worked hard to make that happen.In the final instance, they simply determined that the escalating costs were too great to bear.One of my takeaways from the book is to ponder how many “near Refugees” exist in local congregations. How many people in the congregation are “one more thing” from making the decision to disinvest? For all of the bloggers’ suppositions about “casual Christians”, the resources for strengthening the local congregation, and therefore the impact of religion on society, may be right under our noses.Research like Josh and Aimee have done is the next frontier of understanding the sociology of religion. As we get a better handle on the beliefs and behaviors of real people in real conversations, we’ll have a more robust sense of how faith works in this postmodern, complex, society. It’s quite likely that such research, rather than simply giving interpretations to shifting demographic patterns, will allow us to grasp the resilience of God’s work in a changing society.

B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India's constitution, and M.K. Gandhi, the Indian nationalist, two figures whose thought and legacies have most strongly shaped the contours of Indian democracy, are typically considered antagonists who held irreconcilable views on empire, politics, and society. By far one of the most eloquent and deeply considered looks at why democracy (in India, but really anywhere) remains so powerful and yet unjust, spiritual and yet disenchanted. Absolutely recommended for anyone looking to think deeply about political religion in global debates about citizenship. Or even for those just wanting a more sustained examination of Indian political history. Ambedkar’s leveraging of Madhayamaka Buddhism to argue for the annihilation of caste, and Gandhi’s spirtitualization of touch make this a remarkable read about the interplay of force and justice. One of a kind and truly a tour de force!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A truly singular work! By Athmi I've never had such a difficult time writing an amazon review of a book. To really do this book justice, I feel as though I ought to write a review of every sub-section. This book completely transformed my understanding of politics and what it means to be political. It reshaped my conceptions of equality, freedom, sacrifice, death, force, resistance, democracy, caste, etc.I'm currently reading this book for the third time, and each time I return to the book, I find a different paragraph or sentence to become obsessed with. Right now, I'm engrossed by this paragraph on page six, where Kumar writes, "For neither [Ambedkar nor Gandhi] simply poses questions about the efficacy of abstract ends such as freedom, to which nationalists of their time were so blindly committed. On the contrary, they both shift nationalism's obsessive interest in ends and seek to reformulate the mean and force proper to justice. What kind of force -- routine, infinitesimal, even invisible -- constitutes a free and equal life? Could the people's commitment to civic duty and practical knowledge alone -- say, the art of spinning, spending time on cleaning up public spaces, or forging a weapon -- retrieve such life? What might the minutiae of practice -- which Gandhi often assembled under the term "sacrifice", thereby investing in routine activities the power to acquire a state indifferent to the inequities of everyday life -- prepare one for? Could death, at war or through self-sacrifice, be the ground of equality?"I've never thought carefully about how nationalists are always committed to abstract ends, or about what it means to reformulate the very means by which we seek justice. Could 'sacrifice' be a way to a free and equal life? Could death be the ground of equality?Very often, when I read this book, I wonder, in disbelief, why no one ever told me any of this before. Why is this the first time I'm encountering all of these ideas that help me see through the many lies, that are so ubiquitous, we mistake them for truth?This book is destined to be a classic in political thought and intellectual history that will shape our thought for decades to come. Even if you've never read rigorous academic work before, don't be intimidated by the density of this book. This is a book that everyone can and should read, because it is about things that affect all our everyday lives so deeply and profoundly. This is the kind of book that is so meaningful that you will feel compelled to keep coming back it to for several years.

An Entertaining Journey into the World of Those Hunting the Unexplained By Scarecrowe I didn't really know what to expect when I purchased this book, but I enjoyed it immensely. From Michigan to Florida, we travel along on this entertaining road trip through a very well-written book. Tea Krulos takes the reader on a fascinating journey into the world of folks who hunt ghosts, search for bigfoots, lake monsters, and other assorted cryptids, scan the skies for UFO's, and perform exorcisms. The journey is populated not only by a certain fringe element and the occasional con man, but also by very dedicated and sincere individuals who truly believe in their quests.The author doesn't just rely on interviews, but immerses himself in the subject. He tags along with a group of ghost hunters on investigations, and experiences the occasional turmoil and tension that seems to characterize these organizations. He camps out with searchers for bigfoot and hears howls and chattering that sends him fleeing to the safety of a nearby vehicle. He witnesses unexplainable lights in the sky. He sees firsthand a huckster who travels from airport hotel to airport hotel preying on the weak and hurting.And through it all, with the most obvious exception being the egregious huckster, he is remarkably open-minded. He does not approach this book with the blind faith of the true believer, nor does he assume the close mindedness of the determined skeptic. He essentially casts himself in the role of umpire, and "calls 'em like he sees 'em." And that is refreshing, because this book is not about whether ghosts, bigfoots, and UFO's are real. It's about the people that search for them. The cast of characters is truly remarkable.Quite frankly, I'm ready for Volume 2, Mr. Krulos. In the meantime, I'll be reading this one again and again.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. For any paranormal fan! By Angel E. Tea Krulos leads us on an adventure, chasing after monsters, ghosts, and other supernatural beings in this book. Of course, I am a fan of the paranormal. I wanted to read this book mostly because the Mothman was in it. Point Pleasant is a destination I hope to be seeing soon and I was excited to read more about it . However, there were plenty of other topics I was interested in as well.I thought it would get boring during some parts of the book, like the bigfoot and skunk ape sections, because I've never really been into that. I was wrong, though. It was surprisingly interesting.There were certain places in the book where I just had to lay down my kindle and shake my head. Not believing that some people could put any stock in what was going on. That was the section on Rev. Larson. Why can't people see that he's just trying to rip people off , stereotyping, judging, and embarrassing them while he's at it.I really liked the ghost hunting trips he described. One of them being Bobby Mackey's in Wilder, Kentucky. The first time I heard about that place was on Ghost Adventures, my favorite ghost hunting show.If you are interested in any form of the paranormal, you will like this book. Even if you're a skeptic. I still am even though I like to watch TV shows and read books about ghosts. Recommended!

By scott mardis This book is a wonderful,insightful look at the people who investigate fringe subjects that are generally lumped together as "the paranormal". Cryptozoology, parapsychology, ufology. These are all covered here, from both a proponent perspective and a skeptical perspective. I am in this book and I must say Mr. Krulos painted an accurate portrait of who I really am. I think it's safe to say that the others portrayed here are most likely given the same treatment. People who pursue these subjects are genuinely motivated by human curiosity (for the most part) and sometimes risk being ridiculed by outsiders. This can create tensions between tenuous allies pursuing the same goals, suspicions and questioning of the motives of others. These human dramas and foibles are on display in this book, as well. Even if you question the validity of some of the phenomena being pursued, it's hard not to admire the courage and effort of some of these folks. This is not a boring book. The subject matter jumps around wildly and keeps your interest all the way. I highly recommend this book to anyone fascinated with strange phenomena.

Excellent introduction to astrology By KCStylus Nadiya Shah is an enlightening astrologer, and her debut book reflects her passion and deep knowledge of the subject. This book is great for both casual and beginning astrology enthusiasts who are still just realising that there is more to it than just sun signs, to those astro-enthusiasts who have an in-depth knowledge of astrology but are always looking for different interpretations. What is especially useful about this book is its introductory sections which explain the origins of astrology, the different types of astrology practised, and the answers criticisms about the veracity of astrology. I have never come across this in any other introductory astrology book, and Shah's clear and personable writing style allows the reader to truly grasp the complexity of the issue, but begin to understand it. The book is very well done, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in astrology, whether a beginner or more advanced. It has become my go-to reference guide. I look forward to whatever Shah comes out with next!

I have sat in Barnes and Noble and have tried to look for books about astrology that I could learn from. I was very unsuccessful in finding anything that really captivated me, some books were too technical, some were too confusing, some were just flat out boring. This book, Astrology Realized, is GREAT. I literally just keep on reading, because its SO easy to read and is SO informative. I also love how the book helps you understand the history of astrology as well. This book is fabulous if you are interested in astrology and want to know more. Its interesting and informative, and you just don't want to put the book down!

By Sandra Huffines This book is wonderful b/c all the pages are color, and there are not only pictures at the bottom, but the words underneath the picture to show how to spell it. The pages are challenging enough for a toddler but not too hard, even an adult (me) has fun with the pages. One night we had to wait for daddy to get home to find the lightbulb on one of the pages, and then me and my son laughed as it was right in front of us. I use this book as a reward after he has done his more serious type homework, and who can beat the price of a 1.40? I just wish School Zone made more of these books.

Never imagined my 2 year old will enjoy finding hidden pictures like crazy. She learnt many new words while finding the pictures. She can easily find 80% of the hidden pictures in this book. It says ages 5 and up, but I found it more like a preschool activity book.
